Tequila anyone?
by Lori Allen My Wandering Fork
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in St. Johns
M
y brother Adam passed away recently so I’ve decided to dedicate this article to him. He loved a good cocktail and loved chatting about crazy subjects to write about. He actually came up with the idea of my TO-Go article so I saw it befitting to honor him with this article about all the great margaritas that are served up in our area. And of course it is just in time for Cinco de Mayo! So Cheers to Adam Yourell – you will forever be in our hearts and soul.
Los Portales Mexican Grill (St. Johns)
South Lake Plaza 2245 County Rd 210 St Augustine, FL 32092 (904) 819-1486 Who doesn’t love a great cheap Margarita after a tiring day? Lost Portales serves up just that with their best priced house Margaritas at $2.25 all day Mon-Thur from 11-5 on Friday and Saturday
Back 40 Urban Fresh
450 State Road 13 Ste 113 St. Johns, FL 32259 (904) 287-8226 Top Shelf Margarita is the way to go at Back40. Here the Top Shelf Margarita replaces the normal Triple Sec with Grand Marnier and, generally, uses better tequila. This gives the margarita a bigger orange flavor and even a little richer consistency. Delish!
Cantina Louie
10870 us Hwy 1 North Ponte Vedra Florida 32082 (904) 217-3238 One of the fave’s here is the Fresh Guavarita - Blanco tequila, Gran Gala, lime juice, house made sour, and guava juicewhich gives the tart lime a nice sweet taste. Very refreshing. They also have Fro- Jo-Rita Monday- frozen margaritas at a special price and 7 different flavors every Monday for that weekend recovery!

La Catrina
Lori's "Adamrita Pimienta Frambuesa"
155 Hampton Point Dr. Suite #10, St. Augustine, FL 32092 The Blueberry Jalapeno Margarita is a must at this establishment. It is made with Jose Cuervo Blanco, Agave Nectar, Lime Juice, Fresh Blueberries, Triple Sec and Jalapeno. It’s the best of both world’s sweet and heat. So good! Another cool combo is their Blueberry Pineapple Margarita with Jose Cuervo Blanco, Coconut, Agave Nectar, Lime Juice, Fresh Blueberries, Fresh Pineapple and Triple Sec. Yum!
Lori's "Adamrita Pimienta Frambuesa" 8oz Silver tequila 3 limes juiced ¼ cup muddled/smashed fresh raspberries 2oz Agave or simple syrup 1tsp Crushed Red Pepper- more if you want more heat Blend all in a shaker pour over a salted or sugar rimmed glass with crushed ice
Hurricane Grill & Wings CR 210 3055 County Rd 210 Suite 101, Jacksonville, FL 32259 (904) 230-6445 Coronarita – one of my favorite going on vacation drinks. It’s a house margarita with a corona beer slowly poured into it so as you drink down, so you get the tanginess of the margarita and the light lime freshness of the beer. It’s a win win situation! This place does them right!
St Marys Seafood & More
(World golf village) 705 Hortons Trce, St. Augustine, FL 32095 (904) 547-2578 And for the best tasting, best Value for your money and lightest freshest Margarita around I have to choose the Elevated St. Mary's Margarita. This enticing concoction comes in its own shaker (so you get way more than one drink) and is filled with Avion Silver, Bauchant Orange liqueur, agave nectar and fresh squeezed lime juice. It is so light and refreshing and packs a punch. If you love margaritas like me you will not be disappointed! I’ve come up with a little concoction of my own and named it The Adamrita Pimienta Frambuesa – a little sweet, a little tangy and just right amount of heat. Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Fun Fact: The Margarita- so how and when this beauty was created. As the story goes, it was 1938. Carlos “ Danny” Herrera owned a restaurant between Tijuana and Rosarito in Baja, California. He fancied a dancer by the name of Marjorie King who was allergic to many spirits. But not tequila...Thus we must say thanks to Danny and love for his creation!

Healing from the inside out
HOW HYPERBARIC MEDICINE HELPED ROCKER GET BACK ON STAGE. By Beth Stambaugh, Senior Communications Consultant for Baptist Health
D
ennis Herbert, a cancer survivor and lead guitarist in a classic rock band, is no stranger to challenges. But he was worried that radiation damage to his tissue from his cancer treatment would get the best of him. Defeating prostate cancer required radiation treatments, and, as a result, Herbert developed a condition called radiation cystitis, which damages tissue in the bladder and causes scarring. The scars caused Herbert pelvic pain and bleeding, making it hard to walk and function normally. It got to the point where he needed a catheter bag. Herbert thought this would be his “new normal” – a vast difference from the life he was accustomed to, spending time with his seven grandkids, designing custom jewelry and, of course, playing in his band. “I’m the guy who hurts your ears,” he said jokingly about being lead guitarist. Herbert continued to play at weddings and local venues even though he could barely walk. “They propped me up on a stool, but it was getting really difficult,” he said. He and his wife, Peggy, were relieved when they learned that Baptist Medical Center South had recently opened a Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, hoping it might be the answer he needed to resume normal life.
12
Herbert was evaluated by Anamika Agrawal, DO, a wound care and hyperbaric medicine specialist, who determined that hyperbaric oxygen therapy would be a good option for healing his internal wounds. How can oxygen heal? Hyperbaric medicine works by delivering high levels of oxygen to the patient’s bloodstream in a pressurized environment. This increases the supply of oxygen delivered to the wounded tissue, stimulating new growth in blood vessels. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been shown to enhance the healing process. The treatment takes place in a chamber you can see out of, and the patient lies on a stretcher inside the pressurized chamber. Patients breathe 100% oxygen and their blood carries the extra oxygen to the injured area. “When you breathe 100% oxygen, it reaches your blood vessels and helps renew dead tissue,” explained Dr. Agrawal. “When a person has radiation treatment [for cancer], it kills the bad cells but unfortunately, it kills good tissue as well. That’s what happened in Dennis’s case.” Hyperbaric medicine is increasingly being used for cancer patients who’ve had the same experience.
Herbert had a total of 50 treatments (90 minutes each) which he went to every day for three months except on weekends. “I didn’t feel any pain. The SPONSORED BY ears popping only thing I noticed was my MURRAY AUTOMOTIVE and a little pressure,” he said.
GROUP SUPERSTORES
Being in a small space was not a problem for Herbert, who spent many years piloting his own single-engine plane. “The chamber is about the same size as a small cockpit,” he said. To help pass the time, patients can watch movies or TV. “I watched all nine Star Wars movies,” he said. “The experience was so much better than I ever expected.” After about 15 treatments, Herbert started to notice a difference. Half-way through his treatments, he felt well enough to walk on a treadmill. Now that his treatments are over, Herbert’s wounds are healed and he’s been able to resume his normal activities and add a few new ones, like working out at the gym and doing yoga. “Before this treatment, my walk was a shuffle. Now I can dance,” said Herbert. And, he’s back on stage rockin’ out with his band. If you're experiencing a wound that won't heal, visit baptistjax.com/heal or call 904.202.HEAL for an appointment at Baptist South’s Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center.

Dental Health
Happy Birthday, Bartram Dental! By Dr Jason Lewis, DDS, FAGD BARTRAM DENTAL CENTER (BARTRAMDENTAL.COM) Take a deep breath and blow out the candles! Bartram Dental Center celebrates its birthday in May. But how many candles are there? Bartram Dental Center (BDC) originally opened its doors in May 2005. Saint Johns was just beginning to expand. Ironically, the housing market was similar to todays! Homes were being sold quickly as people flocked to the area. The outstanding schools, location, and weather were drawing in record numbers of people. Over the next 10 years I worked with schools, sports teams, doing lunch and learns in communities, etc. I also worked to expand the services we offered. The one thing I consistently heard from patients, was that they were thankful they found a dental home that they trusted and felt we genuinely cared about them and their families. And even though we were treating the people of Saint Johns, I still felt like something was missing. Around the 12-year mark, I really started focusing on the oral-systemic relationship in the body. I always knew that the health of the mouth and the health of the whole body were connected, but I didn't how closely. My perspective of how I wanted to approach dentistry changed. I felt like I had a greater responsibility to my patients. Of course, I wanted to
20
give them a smile that made them feel confident and proud. But I also wanted to make a difference in how they felt every day of their lives. I started treating patients diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. With the treatment we were able to provide, they were able to sleep better. This resulted in weight loss, playing with their kids, and even being able to sleep in the same bed with their spouse again! Now that is impactful! But I still wanted to do more. To do that, I was going to need some help, and a bigger space. Dr Royce Barlow joined our team in 2018. I couldn’t have found a better partner. It didn’t take long for our philosophies to align. We both, along with our entire hygiene team, became Re-CODE certified. This is a certification for both the medical and dental communities in the “Reversal of Cognitive Decline”. This training provided us the ability to help reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and other similar diagnoses. Now, we are bridging the gap between the dental and medical communities to provide “Complete Health” to our patients.
Where are we doing this? In our new location! We were so fortunate to land in the Fountains of Saint Johns. When we met with the developer of the project, he told us he wanted a medical community where people could go and see doctors from the womb to the grave. We had the honor of being the first to open our doors. Soon, we will have orthopedics, eye care, an ENT and even an entire hospital as neighbors. Talk about a vision coming full circle. Looking back, I am not sure how many candles should be on the BDC birthday cake. 17? 1? Who knows…? But as I close my eyes to blow out the candles, instead of a wish, I will make a pledge to this community. We will continue to grow and evolve as the needs of this community change. Happy Birthday Bartram Dental Center!

Mental Health
Honoring
MOMS by Diana Brummer LCSW, Good Mental Health
M
othering is an activity that unites northern Saint Johns.
With our family-friendly communities, great schools, stellar weather, and beautiful natural landscapes to enjoy outdoor activities, our area attracts families of all varieties. As a result, our community seems to revolve around the joys and pressures of raising a family: nurturing, parenting, schooling, and, of course, mothering. Being a mom might be the most difficult job we will ever do and, although far from easy, we wouldn’t trade it for the world. So, in our community, Mother’s Day is a collective celebration as well as a personal one. Together we recognize and celebrate the public displays of mothering (shout out to all the room moms, team moms, and coach moms out there!) while also honoring the private sacrifices, satisfactions, and struggles of motherhood.
Giving Past Our Limits: One of the defining characteristics of motherhood is sacrifice. It is the action of putting the needs of our children and our family above our own. We give up hours of our own sleep, self-care, and leisure time to nurture and care for the people we love. Sacrifice is a noble part of the job, however, giving past our own limits is unsustainable and serves
22
no benefit in the long run. Let’s remind those hard-working and long-sacrificing moms out there that you are important too. Your needs are legitimate, and your self-care is necessary. It’s true that you can’t pour from an empty cup. Place yourself on your own to-do list so that you can replenish and restore some of what you lovingly give away every day.
Releasing Guilt: As mothers we can hold the unrealistic expectation that we should be all things to all people: exemplary employees, chief family financial officers, master chefs, math tutors, and logistics coordinators, just to name a few. However, unrealistic expectations are just that. They erode our self-esteem and our energy, feeding the internal dialogue that somehow we are not enough. That we should be doing more. That we ought to have it more “together.” Today, let’s agree to release the mom guilt. The greatest gift we can offer our children is to be present. Spend time together. Get to know them as human beings. Allow them to know you. Talk about your likes, your dislikes, your goals, your dreams. Share with them your successes and your failures. Let’s allow our children to know us as the perfectly imperfect human beings we are so that they may grow up appreciating themselves as the same.
Recognizing loss: For all of motherhood’s expressions of joy, it is an area of life that can be shadowed by tremendous loss. Whether we have lost our own mother, lost a child, or lost the dream of having a child, mother wounds can make Mother’s Day bittersweet. This Mother’s Day marks the oneyear anniversary of the death of 13-year-old Tristyn Bailey, whose tragic loss broke the collective heart of our entire community. Teal bows still decorate homes, mailboxes, and businesses in remembrance of her. Our community continues to honor her memory by celebrating her life and envelopes her family with our love and support. I wish you all a very happy Mother's Day, in whatever way you choose to recognize this special day. Creating the Perfect Custom Kitchen by Kirkplan Kitchens KirkplanKitchesn.com
T
here is no greater home improvement than a new kitchen. Custom cabinetry, new countertops, modern appliances – oh my – that sounds so good, doesn’t it? But where do you begin and how do you get to the finish line? Let’s start with your inspiration. Maybe there is a design in this magazine that piques your interest, a television show you recently watched, an article you saw online, or by searching Pinterest. The best designers in the world will create a mood board to begin a design for a customer. To start your own, pull photos that have the colors, textures, shapes, and design elements that interest you most. Don’t begin with the type of kitchen, begin with the feeling you want to elicit when you enter the room. For instance, using yellow, tweed, round and circular elements will
Mood Board
feel comfortable and sunny; where as red, steel, smooth lines and a clean design might make you feel sleek and modern. Don’t focus yet on the actual items you want, just the mood you want to create.
Functional Space
Next, identify specifically the parts of the kitchen you need to function. Open storage or closed storage; island or peninsula; commercial grade or standard household appliances; chef’s kitchen or order-takeout kind of kitchen. How you use the room is the most important aspect as you want to create a room of usable and functional space for years to come. Finally, find actual room inspiration. Again, don’t focus immediately on cabinetry, flooring, and backsplash, instead choose your faucet style, lighting options, and décor – building your room around these elements with your kitchen designer.
24
When you’re ready to meet with your kitchen designer, provide them your mood board, inspiration pieces and use-case outline – this will give them everything they need to begin your dream kitchen. They will go to work creating you a 3D design, offer you cabinetry choices, and schedule your selections meeting to choose flooring, backsplash, countertop and finishing details. Then our team goes to work – pulling permits if necessary, handling final measurements, ordering materials, arranging for specialty contractors like plumbers and electricians, scheduling installation and finalizing the punch work. The more preparation you do ahead of design, the faster you’ll be in your dream kitchen. But don’t worry, if you’re still stuck and just can’t visualize your room, your kitchen designer will be there to help narrow down the infinite possibilities available to you in today’s remodeling projects. The team is also there for you every step of the way during the remodel – making sure you feel like the star of your own HGTV show! Kirkplan Kitchens has been providing remodeling services in Florida for over 20 years. 5 Ways to Help Boost Your Mental Health This Summer by Kimberly Green, Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainer, National Counsel for Mental Well-Being Senior Director of Teen Programs, Johnson Family YMCA, YMCA of Florida’s First Coast

unique perspectives to each activity. With programs for children of all ages, the Y fosters healthy relationships, boosts self-confidence and creates a safe and supportive space to grow and form lasting connections.
When life gets crazy, it’s easy for our mental and psychical health to be left by the wayside, but mental health affects every aspect of our lives. According to the Center of Disease Control, mental health in childhood means reaching developmental and emotional milestones and learning healthy social skills and coping mechanisms to help overcome problems.
2. Find Ways to Get Involved in the Community
The First Coast YMCA is dedicated to offering holistic programming that nurtures and supports the developmental journey of every child and teen from all walks of life. From enrichment programs to camp and childcare, the Y empowers young individuals to lead thriving and inspiring lives.
Here are five ways to get started on boosting both your and your child’s mental health this summer: 1. Find Your People As social beings, belonging is a core element of developing personality and growing mentally. The Y is made up of individuals and families across the First Coast community who bring diverse and
26
Getting involved to help strengthen the community can make us feel a sense of value and gratification; it also helps us see the world from a different angle. Take an active role this summer in bringing about meaningful and enduring change right in your own neighborhood. As a volunteer at the Y, you can help deliver the benefits of good health, strong connections, greater self-confidence and a sense of security to all who seek it.
3. Build Lifelong Healthy Eating Habits A diet that’s beneficial to your physical health is also beneficial for your mental health. Building personal strength and endurance in a welcoming environment can help boost your self-esteem and improve your mental health. At the Y, you can explore a variety of health and nutrition trainings and courses to provide education and assistance in receiving nutrients for growth, both virtually and inperson.
4. Lead an Active Lifestyle
Exercise can help improve our mental and emotional health by reducing anxiety and tension in our bodies. Staying active doesn’t always have to involve hitting the gym, it can mean taking a walk in the park, going for a bike ride, taking a fun dance class, or trying out new skills and hobbies. The Y believes health and fitness are vital components of individual well-being. From our wide range of fitness, personal training, sports and aquatics programs, to our group social activities, as well as fun family and community events, we offer an array of options focused on strengthening spirit, mind and body.
5. Express Gratitude Showing gratitude can help make you and your surroundings feel more optimistic. Whether it’s a simple “thank you,” acknowledgment, or compliment to someone, expressing appreciation nurtures relationships and helps to build positive self-esteem from the sender and the receiver. Gratitude opens the door for an opportunity to build stronger relationships and brighten the outlook of others in our community. When it comes to your mind, stimulation, experiences and reflection are key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, both inside and out. To find your Y and learn more, visit https://fcymca.org/.

A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family
Sally's
Bladder Stones
T
his is a story about Sally, an 8 year old female chocolate Labrador who came to us with a history of having some urinary accidents in the house and needing to urinate outside more frequently. She had no history of any urinary symptoms in the past. When we have a pet showing urinary signs, the first thing we do is to get a urine sample and run a urinalysis to check for infection and glucose to rule out diabetes. At our hospital, we commonly get our urine sample using our ultrasound machine which can quickly give us some important information to help diagnose the problem. With the help of the ultrasound, we can detect bladder wall thickness, masses in the bladder, blood clots, cellular material and stones as well as obtain a sterile urine sample in case a culture is needed. Sally’s ultrasound showed a bladder that appeared to be full of a lot of large stones. The number of stones were so many that the bladder could no longer hold much urine and her bladder wall was very thick. The urinalysis showed that she had a bacterial urinary tract infection. It was recommended that we do a urine culture to help us know which antibiotic should be used to treat the infection. In the meantime, Sally was started on a broad spectrum antibiotic until the results were available. An x-ray was obtained to get
a better picture of how many stones were present and what size they were. The two most common bladder stones seen in our dogs and cats are struvites and calcium oxalates. Struvite stones are caused most often by infection and if they are a pure struvite stone, they can many times be dissolved with a prescription diet and antibiotics. This can take 4-8 weeks on average to work. Since Sally had infection present, it was assumed that these were likely struvite stones so it was decided to attempt dissolution. The other factor was that Sally is a female which means that she is not as likely to become blocked with a stone while we are waiting for dissolution. Calcium oxalate stones are related to genetics and diet and cannot be dissolved. The only way to truly know what type of stone a pet has is to send the stone to the lab for analysis.
on preventing and treating urinary tract infections. We recommend a urinalysis every 3-6 months even if the dog has no symptoms at all after they have had a history of struvite stones. Sally made a full recovery and has been infection and stone free for many months now. She is a happy, healthy and energetic lab again.
After a week of starting the appropriate antibiotics and diet, Sally was showing signs that she was uncomfortable so her parents decided to proceed with surgery to remove the stones. At surgery, we removed too many stones to count. They all appeared like very smooth rocks which is classic for struvite stones. A cystotomy is a fairly routine procedure and has a quick recovery time. In Sally’s case it was the best choice for her because of how large and plentiful her stones were. It’s amazing that she didn’t show any real symptoms until the stones were so big. Prevention for struvite stones is focused www.stjohnsmag.com
