October 2021: Your Go-to Guide to the Arts

Publisher & Creative Director

Dear Neighbor,

Northern St. Johns including Durbin, Aberdeen, CR210 West, Julington, Nocatee & more!

It is never an easy task to say goodbye to a loved one. When my mother was in the last stages of her battle with ovarian cancer our family was introduced to Hospice. The loving care she received by nurses, reiki practitioners and family support specialists was invaluable. In a way, they were like shepherds guiding us through one of the most difficult transitions of life. From daily visits to a unique farewell ceremony with my mother’s friends and family where everyone was able to say good-bye, Hospice was an integral service and I will be forever grateful. St. Johns Magazine is honored to feature CommunityHospice this month!

he tradition of integrating art in health facilities can be traced as far back in history as to when the first hospitals grew out of hostels run by the church as infirmaries for the sick and old. Michael Mullins, the co-author of an international study on hospital art, stated, “It is documented that art can reduce the experience of pain through distracting patient’s attention.” Perhaps this is why most health system facilities have curated art collections in their public and private spaces. Since opening its first center for caring in 1995, Community Hospice & Palliative Care has always featured the work of local artists in its facilities. This critical design element provides a calming backdrop for patients, family members, visitors, and staff to the non-profit’s nine offices and ten hospice centers for caring throughout North Florida. These residential-style centers support area patients in need of acute care to control their pain and symptoms. Community Hospice & Palliative Care’s goal is to stabilize the patient, give family members a welcome respite from providing around-the-clock care for their loved one, and return the patient to the comfort of their home. Local art installations have always been part of each center’s residential design, but new centers have recently incorporated curated art collections throughout each facility. In 2011 the Bailey Family Center for Caring on the Flagler Health+ campus opened to help hospice patients and their families. Two commissioned custom mosaic works Marsh View with St. Augustine and Beach View with Lighthouse by Manila Clough, can be seen in the center’s

entrance area. In addition to Clough’s work, you’ll also see paintings by other local artists such as Hope Barton, Ellen Diamond, and Victor Kowal, to name a few. “Artwork creates an atmosphere of tranquility, comfort, and beauty for our patients and families. We are thankful for the donations from our gifted local artists who created the perfect complement for our clinical care with their beautiful pieces. They create a warm, welcoming space that becomes an invaluable part of the patient’s model of care,” said

“Artwork creates an atmosphere of tranquility, comfort, and beauty for our patients and families...”

Nancy Wansor, RN Manager of the Bailey Family Center for Caring. Also serving St. Johns residents is the newly opened Community Hospice Center for Caring at Baptist Medical Center South Jacksonville. This center, much like its sister facility at Baptist Medical Center Downtown, features a curated art collection. Patients and visitors to either facility can request a copy of the center’s art book to learn more about the featured artwork and artists. What started as the installation of a few signature pieces by local artisans has grown to curated art collections throughout each new center for caring. Since 1979, the mission of Community Hospice & Palliative Care has been to improve the quality of life for patients and families and to be the compassionate guide for end-of-life care in our community. Art has always been and will continue to be an essential part of Community’s mission of help and healing. www.stjohnsmag.com

Artist Profile

Ocean, Lighted, Inner Light, 2020, Oil on Canvas, 48 x 60

Anna Miller Why are you an artist?

I don’t know exactly, I always loved drawing and painting, had an aptitude for it.

What inspires you as an artist? Everything: nature,

ocean, people, still lives, abstract art, just a color combination.

What is your process? Process is mostly intuitive, but there

some analysis present. I analyze my own paintings and my own worth critic, I start intuitively but then analyze and develop on what is happening in the image. Now days I am trying to become less controlled and more loose in my painting process

What is your background and how did it influence your work? I have received at first an academic artist training and

in a beginning my art was working more figurative, painting portraits and landscapes, but then I received a second, terminal degree and discover an abstract art, and love working in it.

Did you have a mentor - what was their best advice? One of my most influential teachers was a teacher from my

childhood, he definitely influenced me the most. His advise was actually telling me there not a lot of room for women in art, and not to go into it. Of course I did the opposite and made a career out of it.

Have you had any other jobs besides being an artist?

Yes I am a professional art educator with 20 years of teaching experience, privately and on college level. Presently I work as an Assistant Professor on the University level.

What has been your most memorable response to your work? I am humbled every thing time my artwork is purchased, it is the greatest compliment and response to my work. My clients who are admiring my work and are proud of owning and enjoying one of my pieces is the best response. Actually one of my clients owns about 15 of my paintings, and her house is like a mini Anna Miller museum.

Artist Profile

Xi Guo Why are you an artist?

Because I don’t think I am good at anything besides painting.

What inspires you as an artist?

Zhuang Zi, an influential Chinese Taoistic philosopher, said," There is no essential difference between life or death, you or me, since everything is physical; except for Tao which is metaphysical, the law of the universe. Heaven and earth share the same root, and I and the myriad of things are the one." To be a Taoist, I am looking at my obsession with vulnerability, the underneath horror of beauty, the ambiguity in between the reality and dream, the fantasy and death.

What is your process?

I’m a watercolor artist. Most of my paintings are transparent watercolors on paper. Watercolor is the media usually considered as drafts of larger scale oil paintings or a color sketch for the reference. Typically, the term watercolor implies loose, rapid strokes, large rhythms, and broken color. However, since I am very fond of the paintings from the reminiscent Renaissance, the fine details, the subtle and graceful use of color and the melancholy emotion of my paintings might break the mold.

What is your background and how did it influence your work?

I am a Signature member of AWS (American Watercolor Society), NWS (National Watercolor Society), NWWS (Northwest Watercolor Society) and my home state Florida Watercolor Society. I majored in oil painting at my undergraduate school in Shanghai, China. I moved to St. Augustine after I earned my master’s degree in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) I studied graphic design when I was in high school. It really helped me to get a sense of structure and balance. Also, I love to study other artists’ paintings, from the ancient masters to the modern artists. I still remember I studied The Art Book for hours. My experience as a photographer also helped. For a painting, if your technique is good, color looks balanced, even with a vulgar composition, most likely its already a decent piece. However, for a photo, there’s nothing more critical than composition, especially when you shoot black and white. So, having the experience to be a photographer pushes my thinking about concepts, integrity, and sequence more than ever before. In addition, it reminds me to consider the composition and color balance the whole time when I paint.

Did you have a mentor - what was their best advice?

I didn’t learn from a specific person. Instead, I learned from my experience. I only had a one month watercolor training course in college. We also had plein-air courses every year. We were allowed to either use watercolor or oil paints. The second year of my college, I chose to try watercolor because it was light, easy to carry and I had heard that the professor was good at watercolor. I learned a lot from him. However, I had not painted with watercolor until I thought I might sell my watercolors to pay for my tuition when I was in graduate school. Therefore, I can only give my advice which is keep doing what you are doing and learn from all kinds of art genres.

Have you had any other jobs besides being an artist?

I taught drawing, painting and graphic design at an art and design college in Shanghai for a couple of years before I started my graduate school. I still have few private students and teach watercolor workshops sometimes but I don’t want to do much of anything because it reduces my time to paint.

nial International Prize “Marche d’Acqua”Fabriano Waterclour in Italy. I won Best in Show at the Florida Watercolor society’s 48th Exhibition in 2019. Recently, I received the Best Watercolor Award at the 15th International ARC Salon competition and the Anne Williams Glushien Memorial Award at the American Watercolor Society’s 154th International Exhibition. The most memorable one is when I was accepted into the NWS 50 Stars of the Nation Exhibition from the nomination by the Florida Watercolor Society. The 50 Stars Exhibition was at the National Watercolor Society Gallery in San Pedro, California.

What has been your most memorable response to your work?

There are so many. If you count them as responses. I started to focus on painting with watercolor about nine years ago and soon became an international award-winning artist. My paintings have been exhibited in the China, France, England, Taiwan, Italy, Hong Kong, South Korea, Greece, and Vietnam. My articles and paintings have been featured in the International Artist Magazine, the Art of Watercolor Magazine and Watercolor Artists Magazine. My paintings were included in the art-book, The Best of Watercolor - Splash 16, 20 and 21, published by North Light Books. In 2015, I won a cash prize at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours’ 203rd Open Exhibition, and a major Award from Shenzhen International Watercolor Biennial. My paintings have been accepted by American Watercolor Society’s international exhibition five times since 2016. Moreover, I won merchandise awards and cash prices at the National Watercolor Society’s International Exhibition in 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2021. In 2018, I received third place at the Bien-

Artist Profile

Gerald Branch

Dashiki Chronicled, 30 x 40

I was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. Early in life, I was encouraged by a range of mentors who recognized my talent. Their encouragement led me to pursue an arts-related career. After high school, I attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia earning a BFA in Art Education, with a concentration in painting and drawing. After earning my BFA, I began a teaching career and eventually become a school administrator after acquiring a Masters in Administration degree from Gwynedd Mercy College, PA. I was employed by the Philadelphia School District for thirty-seven years. Teaching and administering over those years did not deter me from continuing to work as an artist and to exhibit my work. My artist background encouraged me to make the two schools I administered arts-centered. The works created by the students became permanent fixtures in these schools. The student works were often produced with collaborations between art community organizations, professional artists, and classroom teachers. One community organization referred to one of the schools as an art museum that spanned every floor of the building. I have always been intrigued by the range of expression the visual arts provide. The subject matter I paint are things that I have experienced, or have seen others experience. To see the intellectual stimulation a viewer derives from art is satisfying. I delight witnessing

the time individuals spend looking at my pieces which suggests that they are engaged with the colorful presentations and the very detailed composition. Usually, my observers see beyond what initially appears to be simple representations. They see that there is significant meaning beyond the paintings. My works are colorful mixed-media compositions. While a number of my works represent historical elements involving African Americans, a number of my works are centered around personal experiences and reactions to people, places, and imaginary settings. My goal is to facilitate and stimulate reflective journeys as the eye travels through the colorful engaging compositions to invite each viewer to consider, not only what they believe might be the artist intent, but most importantly what they visually experience encouraging reflection on potential stories they see in the work that connects to their own experiences. My work has been exhibited at the State Museum of Art in Harrisburg, PA, Allentown Museum of Art, Allentown, PA, HUBRobeson Gallery at Penn State, University Park, PA, Crisp-Ellert Art Museum, St. Augustine, FL, St Augustine Art Association, St. Augustine, FL, and Yellow House Art Gallery, Jacksonville, FL.

Keeping a Healthy Beat: Staying Aware & Taking Care of Your

Heart Health

by Paige Hamilton, Director of Community Integrated Health Programs, Healthy Living Department YMCA of Florida’s First Coast

D

o you take care of your family? Of course, it goes without saying. Do you take care of your home? Yes, even when you don’t want to wash another dish. Do you take care of your heart? Probably not. According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death in women in the United States. Hypertension, after all, is known as the silent killer. In today’s world, it is more important than ever to be aware of your health by knowing your risk factors, making changes that are sustainable, and being proactive about living a heart healthy lifestyle. Caring for your heart through a healthy diet and regular physical activity is the key to preventing heart disease. While these things may not be at the top of the to do-list, they are the secret weapons in preventing high blood pressure and reducing your risk of heart disease by as much as 80 percent, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). High blood pressure is a condition that makes our heart work harder, which when left untreated, can lead to scarring and damage to your arteries, and can lead to heart disease – including heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, eye damage, heart failure, and atherosclerosis. A normal blood pressure is a systolic reading less than 120 and a diastolic of less than 80 milliliters of mercury.

18

Here are a few ways you can work to keep a healthy beat and control your blood pressure: Know your numbers and get a routine check-up with your healthcare provider annually to work together on improving your health. MAKE SOME LIFESTYLE CHANGES TO PROMOTE HEART HEALTH. • Maintain a healthy weight. Eat a variety of nutritious foods- focusing on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean proteins, and less saturated fat. • Be more active by aiming for 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week while also incorporating muscle strengthening activities. • Monitor your sodium intake and reduce if necessary. For those with hypertension, consuming 1,500 mg of sodium per day, which is about one teaspoon or less, is recommended by the AHA. • Limit your alcohol intake and quit smoking. • Track your blood pressure at home to take ownership of your treatment. If your doctor prescribed you medication to help manage your blood pressure, remember to take it regularly. Making changes can be hard, but the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast is here to help. If you

are struggling with managing your high blood pressure or looking for additional support and guidance, the Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring program may be the perfect fit. You will work alongside a trained Healthy Heart Ambassador to learn about blood pressure management and set goals to improve your heart health. The YMCA offers a variety of programs designed to meet you where you are on your health journey and provide guidance and support along the way. For more informa-

SLEEP ISSUES? BARTRAM DENTAL CAN HELP! By: Dr. Jason Lewis DDS, FAGD at Bartram Dental

Do you wake up in the morning feeling tired and not ready to face the day? Does your sleeping partner complain about your snoring during the night? Have you been told that you may have “sleep apnea.”?? If so, here’s some great news. Our Team at Bartram Dental can provide relief for snoring including the more severe untreated obstructive sleep apnea. There is no reason you should live with sleep issues night after night. Bartram Dental is one of the limited Vivos®️ System providers in Florida. Vivos is an FDA-cleared “Dental Appliance for Sleep Apnea Treatment.” If you suffer from sleep apnea, you’re certainly not alone. It’s estimated 26% of us will have sleep apnea between the ages of 30-80. This often-debilitating condition is so common that more and more over-the-counter devices and appliances are popping up all over the place. They all claim to provide relief snoring and sleep apnea relief but please know most are untested and unproven. By being potentially ineffective they could cause more harm than good by delaying your successfully addressing your sleep issues.

22

If you’re considering a proven “non-CPAP” treatment for your sleep apnea, make sure you choose one that’s received FDA clearance like the Vivos®️ System featured at Bartram Dental. Not only will the Vivos treatment method breathe new life into your ability to achieve a restful night’s sleep, but our dentists can target the root cause of your disorder to treat mild-to-moderate sleep apnea as well. I’ve learned there are at least five primary benefits to choosing the Vivos® System over other sleep apnea & snoring products you may find online: • Vivos reduces or eliminates the symptoms of your obstructive sleep apnea • Vivos requires only a very limited treatment time opposed to a lifetime of wearing an appliance at night • Vivos is made from an all-natural, nonsurgical and non-pharmaceutical material that is comfortable to wear

• Vivos is an Affordable treatment that is even covered by most dental insurance plans (not covered by dental insurance) • Vivos can even be used as a cosmetic dental treatment to improve the aesthetics of upper and lower jaw positioning As a Vivos®️ Integrated Practice, Bartram Dental dentists have received advanced clinical training to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing, including mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea. If you’re ready to learn how our specially-trained dentists can design a custom Vivos®️ biomimetic medical device for you, we invite you to use our convenient online booking tool or give us a call to schedule your appointment. I look forward to discussing this with you in-person.

St. Augustine Art Association to host Tactile, Member Show Exhibits by Eric Rakov October is National Sensory Processing Awareness Month, and the St. Augustine Art Association will be hosting a tactile exhibit with the Florida DeafBlind Association and sponsored by VyStar Credit Union. Not only is the art fun to look at, but for the blind and visually impaired, it’s engaging and interactive. The artists push the limits of conventional visual art to create sculptures, reliefs, mixed media, ceramics, and fiber art that can be enjoyed and experienced by everyone (hand washing as well as sanitizer will be available and encouraged). Each piece has a Braille sign, made by students from the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) to make the art even more accessible. An installation of art done by FSDB students who attend the Blind Ambition Art Club is also on display in the exhibit. As the summer months come to a close, the St. Augustine Art Association will feature an exciting exhibition season starting with its annual Fall Members Show, on display during the month of October. Local and regional artists have stayed busy these past few months and are thrilled to have new work in the gallery and online. This annual exhibition is a testament to the vibrancy of the local art scene and includes works in a variety of style, medium and subjects. Artists of all skill levels and backgrounds are able to showcase their work in the Fall Members Show and be awarded for their artistic achievements. Pieces will be judged and prizes awarded by our show sponsor, 97Park Residential and Commercial Real Estate. Artwork is for sale and benefits the artists and programs of the St. Augustine Art Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization.

Two special exhibits in October. Both the Tactile Show and Fall Members’ Show open at the Art Association, on October 1, during First Friday Art Walk from 5-9pm and will be on display through October 31, 2021. The gallery is open to the public Tues - Friday 1-4pm and located at 22 Marine Street in Historic Downtown. Admission to the gallery is free.
