Begun in 1915 by Augustus Hedrick Craig, today the funeral home is run by his grandson Gus Craig III and his greatgrandson Justin Craig. With over a century of service to the community, they are experts in the celebration of life that has come to characterize their approach and set them apart. We were able to sit down with Justin to learn more about the family’s rich history and their philosophy of helping people. Justin Craig is the fourth generation to guide families through the sensitive and challenging experience of saying good-bye to a loved one. “We believe that every life has a story to tell and prefer to think of it as a time for reflection, appreciation and even celebration. We carefully guide families through every aspect of the arrangement process and can offer families everything

they need under one roof. We strive to make the whole process as easy as possible during this challenging time. While always operating with integrity and providing the highest level of service in the area.” Thank you notes from grateful clients and their families cover numerous bulletin boards at the funeral home, a testament to the compassion and integrity that has sustained this family-owned business for four generations of the Craig Family. Justin says that placing the desires and needs of clients first and giving them a positive experience is a priority. “We are not stuck in doing things the traditional way. If a family comes with an idea that isn’t traditional we are open to doing it, whether that is using special music or mementos, or something else. We want to give people the best possible celebration of life.”

Justin’s Mom Sheryl recalls seeing records from back in the day when people paid with chickens or gallons of milk. “It's about seeing the human side of death and using compassion,” says Justin. Justin has learned from the examples set by his great grandfather, grandfather and father who built the business from its roots in the early twentieth century. A Rich History

ustin’s Great Grandfather, Augustus Hedrick Craig began his career as a Deputy with the St. Augustine Police Department and soon after started working at the existing L.F. Sanchez Funeral Home on 30 St. George Street. He eventually

became a partner in 1915 and in 1934 became the sole proprietor of Craig Funeral Home Inc., which was moved to 20 Granada Street. Craig Funeral Home even operated a private ambulance service from 1918 until the mid-1970’s. As the community grew the funeral home was relocated to its current location at 1475 Old Dixie Highway in 1984. “I'm lucky to be work with my Dad on a daily basis,” Justin says. They share a special relationship outside of running the family business, enjoying golf, fishing and family time together. Nowadays, Justin’s six-year-old twin sons, Bryson and Chandler, and fiveyear-old daughter Lilah are part of the fun. Maybe one day one or all the children will follow in the family tradition? The day we met Justin happened to be the twenty-second annual Gus Craig Salvation Army Award dinner to benefit Feed the Hungry. Each year since the early 1990s, the award has recognized longtime community residents who give selflessly to others. Justin’s Grandfather “Gus” as he was affectionately known in the community, supported many local causes and organizations. There is a certain pressure in living up to the esteemed reputation which precedes him but Justin says it is an honor to serve the community. He recalls the funeral procession for former St. Augustine Sheriff Neil J. Perry. As the procession passed through the community crowds lined the streets celebrating his life of service. He says it is moments like this that reflect Craig Funeral Home’s humble devotion to helping people mourn and celebrate a life. Although many things have changed since 1915, one thing remains the same. The Craig family’s commitment to serving your family in a time of need.

t’s always fun and romantic to visit Paris, to eat the wonderful food, visit the museums and walk along the picturesque streets filled with small stores, cafes and restaurants. However, I believe that one of the best parts of visiting Paris is getting out of the city and discovering other cites of France.

when the three-course meal was served with unlimited wine – which is always a plus in my book. The tour of Monet’s garden was absolutely stunning and I could have stayed there for days taking it all in. From now on, I will always recommend this to my clients and friends visiting Paris.

We have traveled to Paris in the past and had an amazing time but we didn’t have a desire to return because we felt we had already done all of the touristy things. I quickly changed my mind after seeing my next-door neighbor's vacation photos of Monet’s Gardens and start thinking about how I couldn’t wait to return one day soon!

If you are interested in history and opulent palaces, you might want to add a trip to the Palace of Versailles to your trip since it’s close to Monet’s Gardens. I suggest going early in the day because it gets hot and crowded during the summer months.

We bought a package tour and took a 45-minute motor-coach ride from Paris to Giverny that included a wonderful lunch. We weren’t expecting much in the way of food, so we were surprised

The most economical way to travel to Paris is to buy a consolidator fare (bulk fare through a travel agent) from either Orlando or Tampa and stay in an Airbnb or a bed and breakfast whenever possible. On our last trip, we shared a large two-bedroom apartment with a view of

the Eiffel tower. To help minimize the cost of the trip and to have more fun, we traveled with friends and shared the cost of the rental car and the Airbnb. Of course, the best time of the year to go to Europe is during the Spring and Fall. If you travel during the summer months it can be very crowded and hot. If you choose to go during the summer months while your children are out of school, try to get out and do your tours early in the day. Since you’re already in Europe, it’s easy to get around on a train or a short plane ride to other cities. I suggest that you not try and fit too many places to visit into your itinerary. You need time to rest and enjoy what each location has to offer. With low consolidator airfares and Airbnb’s, it’s affordable to go back another time! Generalization:

The Key to Successful Learning What if you could only drive your car on a familiar road to a single destination? The ability to be flexible about where you go and how to get there is crucial to driving effectively. That is true for every skill: It’s only valuable if you can use it in familiar and new situations. The ability to apply skills to new places, situations and people is called “generalization.” Generalization is essential to effective learning for everyone, but it is especially important for children with autism. Most neurotypical children generalize automatically. Kids with autism usually need to be taught how to apply a skill beyond the setting in which they learned it.

Generalization and ABA

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) uses positive reinforcement to help children with autism learn age-appropriate behavior, communication and social skills, and reduce challenging behavior. Most parents should look for an ABA provider that helps kids generalize skills in many locations, such as home and the playground, the doctor’s office and so on. Many providers also have therapy

centers, which create more opportunities for children to practice social skills with other kids.

Generalize for Independence

Generalization plays a fundamental role in helping kids with autism become more independent. A daily activity such as getting ready for bed may seem simple, but it requires a long list of skills. A child has to put on pajamas, use the toilet, wash her hands, brush her teeth and get in bed. Each of these also involves many skills. Take tooth brushing: It requires putting a toothbrush in your mouth, accepting the taste and texture of toothpaste, brushing and rinsing. What if a child learns to use only one toothbrush in one bathroom? Brushes wear out and need to be replaced. It’s sometimes necessary to brush your teeth in a different location. With ABA, a therapist divides the process of tooth brushing into small steps. The therapist teaches the child each step and provides plenty of positive reinforcement for every success. Once a child can brush her teeth with one brush in one place, the thera-

pist will slowly add new elements to the sequence: a new toothbrush, a different color or a new toothpaste. Then the therapist may introduce new locations, such as brushing in a different bathroom and at Grandma’s house. When a child can brush her teeth using various toothbrushes in a number of places, she has effectively generalized the skill.

Start Early for Best Results

Generalization is another reason to start ABA early. Younger children who have intensive ABA therapy often learn to generalize more quickly, and may need to spend less therapy time generalizing skills as they get older. It’s impossible to overstate the importance of teaching children with autism to generalize skills to new situations, environments and people. Without generalization, children will learn skills and behavior, but the result may be an age-appropriate version of being able to drive only on a familiar road to a single destination. While I enjoy and have practiced countless forms of arts and crafts, from paper cutting and pottery to oil paint and sewing. My most satisfying form of art came as a surprise even to me, Digital Illustration. It's given me a sense of freedom I never knew was a possibility in the world of art and design. And while I cannot say I ever had that "ah-ha" moment of this is why I want to be an artist, I knew from the very beginning that this is where I wanted to end up. My first memories are of paint and pencils, my education was filled with creative courses that allowed that side of myself to flourish. Any other profession would have been an injustice to my true self.

What is your background?

My background is mostly art history and pottery focused, surprisingly enough. I love the ability to use art as a placeholder for history and as a tool to measure progress. Whether it's societal, economic, or the personal progression of an artist themselves.

How has your practice changed over time? Over time, I have moved from figure pottery to oil paint portraits, and now I've landed at Digital Illustration. Only recently have I realized that all my studying and practice lead me to this point with a greater understanding of composition, lighting, emotion, and anatomy. Allowing me to confidently share my art with others.

What aspect of your work do you enjoy most?

The most enjoyable aspect would definitely be presenting the final product to my client. Hands down, the best feeling in the world.

Did you have a mentor? How did they shape your current work or your path?

I did not have a mentor unfortunately, however, I do actively follow many Animation and Digital Design professionals and consistently work to achieve their level of skill, professionalism, and creative influence. With the advancements made in Social Media, many Artists have become mentors to the next generation of artists through their use of YouTube, MasterClass, SkillShare, and social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.

Have you had any other jobs besides being an artist?

Besides being a freelance artist, I currently work for a local distribution company. I also spent a few years as a pre-school teacher and as an assistant to a large law firm in Jacksonville Beach, all while raising my beautifully rambunctious four-year-old.

What has been your most memorable response to your work?

There is an event in town hosted by a local Non-Profit called The Girl Gang Swap Meet and these ladies changed my life. Seeing them arrive at my table to see my art with these huge smiles on their faces just changed everything. "I never see bodies like mine depicted in art like this!" "I love the curvy figures, so refreshing!" Knowing that my art gave someone else the same feeling it gives me changed everything and kicked my creativity into high gear. I wanted more options and more representation and I strive to maintain that feeling with

He’s more like a “Renaissance Man” with diverse interests in photography, woodworking, art glass and his new-found love of designing jewelry. A highly skilled diagnostic radiologist for over 37 years, Donn has now turned in his white coat for a different cloche, operating mask and the tools of his new trade of custom jewelry design.

A. “Actually, as an undergraduate I had visions of becoming a Veterinarian but the Dean of the VET school bluntly told me, “I don’t think you’re smart enough to become a Veterinarian!”

Q. Now that you’re retired, has the transition from medicine been difficult? A. “I don’t miss medicine now because I had reached a time in my career where I was ready for a change. In 2016, my wife and I said goodbye to Ohio and relocated to St. Johns to join our quintessential “Brady Bunch” – a blending of 6 children and 8 grandchildren. We were ready for the next chapter!” Q. Transitioning from radiology to designing jewelry is not the most obvious move – What’s the connection between art and medicine for you? A. “Although Medicine is often referred to as an art - it is definitely considered a leftbrained skill. Artists are more likely to be right brained. The connection between the two disciplines is undeniable. Both

you to pursue art at this time? A. “I’ve been a collector of art all of my life. Primarily my interest was in the collection of pottery and art glass. There was no time available to pursue any artistic passion. Retirement changed all of this and I can now actually call myself an Artist and a Jewelry Designer.” Q. What’s the design process? A. “It’s all about blending of form, color and materials. The medium is epoxy and I work with molds and free forms that I create out of wood, silicone or sheets of plastic film. I must wear a respirator mask and goggles when I’m grinding and polishing the piece and I can only work for short periods of time, but I rarely miss a day.” Q. How many pieces have you designed?

Q. How did you react to this rejection? “I was literally shocked by his statement. My adrenaline flew into gear and the “Revenge of the Nerds” took over. I was determined to become a medical doctor and focused my studies on diagnostic radiology.” Q. You’ve had a long and successful career as a Radiologist, what moved

What type of art do you do and why did you become an artist?

How has your practice or process changed over time?

I am a photographer who tries to create artistic imagery within my photographs. I have always been inspired by art. I have an undergraduate degree in art history from the University of North Florida. Photography is a medium that captures a moment in time that can be kept forever as close to magic as you can get.

Once a conventional DSLR camera user I have made the switch to using an I Phone camera. The ease of use has allowed me to capture images I would not ordinarily be prepared to capture with a traditional camera.

Do you have a mentor? Dennis Gannon is my mentor, a landscape painter who has inspired me through his work to expand my subject matter from abstracts in nature to more realistic imagery.

What has been your most memorable response to your work? I took a random picture of a women who walks on north beach every day. I did not know her but her daily walks struck me. After capturing a rather impressionistic photo I was compelled to give the image to her which was out of character for me. She wrote me a letter that impacted me and inspired my work moving forward.

k so I know you must have gone by this place a million times and had various thoughts of stopping by to give it a try and then thought otherwise. I know I did and I’ve been here a long time! The place I’m talking about is the building with the big red letters HONG KONG heading towards St Augustine airport if you are going north on US1 and just past the airport if you are going south. The building doesn’t appear to be much so you think I’ll just head up US1 a little further…well you just need to put on those brakes and pull on in! If this place doesn’t say China Town, I don’t know what does! When you open the door you are immediately transported to those hidden gem, really good basement restaurants in China Town, NYC. So I thought that this would be a great place to bring our 210 tasting group. As I loaded up the van I told them that we are going to try a unique place tonight so get ready to enjoy the experience! Our group is the sharing kind so we started off with some apps or often referred in Chinese restaurants as Dim Sum….crispy Vegetable spring rolls, shrimp dumplings, crispy roasted duck dumplings, spicy steamed pork buns and skewers. Everything was a new adventure in taste and freshness. The rolls were crisp, light and filled with

Wonton soup next. The bowls were HUGE! The miso soup came highly recommended and we all could see why. It was packed full of mushrooms, seasoned tofu and herbs all in this light delicate broth. So good! And the wonton soup was stuffed full with pork wontons and scallions that brought tons of flavors to every bite. By this time you would have thought that we would have been full but luckily we share everything so there is always plenty of room for the more. Main dishes consisted of chicken fried rice and vegetable fried rice to start. These were not your typical fried rice dishes they both were loaded with bean sprouts, shredded cabbage, carrots, green onions and even chopped peanuts in the chicken one. This gave the rice so much more depth and richness that you could easily have just eaten this and been very satisfied. Green bean and chicken dish was next and this dish had rich dark sauce flavored with ginger, hoisin garlic with crisp snappy green beans. It was very popular but probably our favorite dish of the evening was the most unusual one, it was the pumpkin chicken. That’s right pumpkin! When combined with chicken, carrots and a light sauce it takes on the likeness of maybe a turnip but has more mild sweeter taste. I think that we all need to add pumpkin to our stir fries this fall! Who

APEX KICKS OFF FALL SEASON WITH

TOOTHLESS: A HALLOWEEN TREAT

pex Theatre Studio will kick off its fall season with Toothless: an original horror comedy by Ian Mairs which pays homage to the classic comedies of the 1980s while exploring timely issues about identity and isolation in the adolescent world. It features a cast of eleven young artists from the senior acting company at Apex Theatre Studio under the direction of Raines Carr, Associate Director of the studio. After a bullying incident at school, quirky Penn (non-binary) retreats to a lonely but safer existence as a home school student. On a family day trip to some cave dwellings, Penn stumbles upon an injured bat (Z) that ends up in Penn’s backpack for safekeeping. Penn’s effort to rescue this distressed creature backfires as Z turns out to be an anxious, shape- shifting vampire bat with a weak stomach and a dislike for the taste of blood. Throw in a pack of rowdy vampires on the hunt for their lost sibling, Penn’s high strung sister in a ruthless battle to win the regional science fair, and an inordinate amount of junk food and you’ll find this crunchy Halloween treat has a warm gooey inside. “We wanted to develop a work specifically for the comedic gifts of the young artists currently in our studio,” commented playwright Mairs. “This particular group of performers have a knack for the deadpan banter memorable in the films of John Hughes,” added director, Raines Carr. “We also wanted to create a show for this spooky time of year designed specifically for teenagers,” added Carr. Performances are scheduled for October 18th (7:30 p.m.), October 19th (2:00 p.m.) October 25th (7:30 p.m.) and October 26th (2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.) at the newly expanded Black Box Theatre at Apex Theatre Studio located at 5150 Palm Valley Road in Ponte Vedra, Florida. What is Canine Flu?

Since it was first identified, canine flu has been found in almost every state in the US. The symptoms of canine influenza are very similar to that of many upper respiratory viruses and cannot be differentiated without specific testing. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, and lethargy. Secondary bacterial infections can develop, and in severe cases, fever, pneumonia, and respiratory distress can develop. Canine flu can be deadly in very severe cases, but most cases are mild. Flu is spread through respiratory secretions during coughing, barking, and sneezing. Boarding kennels, grooming facilities, daycare facilities, and shelters are at increased risk of the spread of the virus. Dogs can get it also from indirect sources such as contaminated water and food bowls, shared leashes and collars, infected bedding, and from people who have come in contact with infected dogs. The virus is viable for 48 hours on surfaces, and 12 hours on hands. The virus has a general incubation period of 1-5 days, with most symptoms starting to appear 2-3 days after expo-

Canine Influenza is treated with supportive care such as NSAIDs for fever and inflammation, antibiotics for secondary bacterial infections, fluids, and good nutrition. Often the virus runs its course within a week, but illness can last for up to three weeks. The best prevention against canine flu is vaccination; there is a vaccine available for each strain, and many veterinary hospitals carry the bivalent flu vaccine, which is both known strains in one. Flu vaccines require a booster 2-4 weeks after the initial dose, and are then given on an annual basis. Flu vaccines are still considered a “lifestyle,” vaccine, but should certainly be strongly considered for dogs that have exposure risk. It’s important to understand that any dog who visits a boarding kennel, a daycare facility, a groomer, or a dog park can be exposed to a variety of contagious illnesses, no matter how well they are vaccinated. Upper respiratory viruses and bacterial infections are typically highly contagious, and dogs who frequent places where they are exposed to other dogs are at great risk for catching something at some point in their lives.
