Exquisite craftsmanship is visible in every aspect of a design by River Stonework. But what exactly goes into each project? In this issue, River Stonework offers our readers a birds-eye view of a project and the transformation of one backyard.
THE ULTIMATE BACKYARD OASIS IN ST. JOHNS
River Stonework
Phill and Rafaela Raposo, owners of River Stonework believe spending as much time as possible outside, enjoying the fresh air, cooking, entertaining, and being together with friends epitomizes the good life in northern St. Johns. Their locally-owned company seeks to provide homeowners with the chance to create their own dream backyard oasis using a combination of paver patios, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, screen enclosures, and pergolas. They have also added concrete coating to their repertoire of services.
Exquisite craftsmanship is visible in every aspect of a design by River Stonework. But what exactly goes into each project? In this issue, River Stonework offers our readers a birds-eye view of a project and the transformation of one backyard.
Phases of a Project
They begin each project by visiting the home to see the space and listening closely to the client to learn their ideas.
Phill and Rafaela then work with their team of certified outdoor living designers to create a 3d design to help the client envision what the space will look like when completed.
Once the client is satisfied with the design, installation begins. Everything is incorporated by River Stonework; design, installation, equipment, and materials including appliances, granite countertops, marble, and pavers. They have three in-house crews, each made up of one manager and three supervisors, and their installers. Throughout this process, the team is available to answer any questions and deal with unexpected issues.
Country Club Vibe
The family wanted a stunning outdoor space makeover to complement a new pool installed by Breakwater Pools. The backyard is roughly sixteen-hundred square feet of living space.
The concept was country club meets outdoor living room, combined with an existing exterior kitchen and dining space. They wanted a place where the kids could congregate with friends, and they could enjoy cookouts, swimming, and entertaining with neighbors and family.
The vibe they were going for was high-end, streamlined, light, and bright. For their color scheme, they chose a lot of greenery, coupled with whites and pale silvery grays,
A full overhaul of the ground-level space was key to the project. Large gray-white Italian marble with seamless square edges and coping in the same stone was used for the decking. A beautiful stone fireplace anchors one corner with a backdrop of tall graceful palms. A turf grass accent surrounds the pool, underneath which is a drainage system. The brilliant blue tilework along the edge of the pool was also designed and installed by River Stonework. Plans are in place to add an aluminum pergola later.
The project timeframe was two months to install the pool and a mere two weeks to install the decking.
Seeing is Believing
River Stonework’s artistry speaks for itself as reflected by this amazing project. Homeowners who wish to upgrade their backyard for their own enjoyment and to increase their home’s value should consider choosing a company like River Stonework with an impeccable reputation for excellence, and a quality guarantee. They have received numerous accolades, including being chosen twice as the favorite hardscape company by Nextdoor Neighborhood Favorites, and have been nominated as one of the best outdoor living companies in Florida.
Phill says River Stonework has built everything on its craftsmanship and its reputation. “We do not subcontract our workers. We are 100% reliable and accountable for any project that holds our signature. We are one of the only companies in this industry that gives a 5-year warranty on paver installation and 3 years on screen enclosure installation as well as pergolas and gazebos.”
As the saying goes, ‘Seeing is Believing’. To learn more about River Stonework and to view additional projects visit www.riverstonework.com or visit their Facebook or Instagram.
“We rely on a very specialized team of supervisors who go over every step of the project and anticipate issues so homeowners do not have to worry,” says Phill. The Raposo Family enjoying their outdoor living room with a country club vibe.
Your Pet’s Wellness on Wheels HELLOVET: PET CARE AT HOME
The idea for HelloVet, a high quality mobile veterinary service, first came to Dr. Erika Pitkat and her husband Frank during the pandemic. She explains how during that time they recognized people were concerned about dropping their pets off without their owners at brick and mortar veterinary hospitals. HelloVet opened in July of 2021 offering a solution: an at-home veterinary experience to relieve pet owners’ fears and create less stress for the animals themselves.
But even post-pandemic, the fact remains that many cats and dogs get panicked by riding in the car or visiting the vet at the office, and owners are thrilled by the idea that they can have HelloVet come to them. Busy parents with children, disabled and elderly people also benefit from the convenience of having their pets cared for at home.
“Overall, people have been both receptive and appreciative to have less stressful vet visits in the comfort of their own home,” says Dr. Pitkat.
What Services Are Offered?
The HelloVet mobile clinic is a stateof-the-art exam space where dogs and cats are treated by a professional staff and Veterinarian without ever having to leave home. With a hybrid approach, dogs and cats can also be seen inside the home if a visit to the mobile clinic is too stressful. This is especially beneficial to our feline friends.
HelloVet offers a wide range of inhome services including wellness and sick exams, vaccinations, laboratory testing, allergy testing, microchipping, dermatology, nutrition, and pharmacy delivery services as well as superior hospice and end-of-life care. They
also offer specialty services such as Cold Laser Therapy, which assists with wound healing, osteoarthritis, spinal injuries, and skin infections. Telehealth visits are also available after a veterinary-client-patient relationship has been established. Multi-pet appointments are also available. The goal is to accommodate each client’s needs with top-notch care for their furry companions.
If your pet needs emergency services, advanced surgeries, dental cleanings or hospitalization, HelloVet has partnered with Pet Urgent Response And Emergency, Elite Veterinary Surgery of Florida and San Jose Beauclerc Animal Hospital. The process is fully integrated and guided by HelloVet’s staff so that patients may receive the care they need when they need it. HelloVet also partners with a certified dog trainer, pet sitting services, and an in home groomer.

Nocatee Ranks as 'Best Place to Raise a Family in Florida'
Niche, an online publisher of nationwide rankings and reviews for schools, cities, neighborhoods and more, has named Nocatee the top residential community in Florida. In its 2023 rankings, Niche gave the master-planned community an overall A+ grade, naming it the No. 1 best place to raise a family in Florida out of 1,177 locales evaluated statewide.
"Nocatee continues to set the standard for world-class community living in the Sunshine State and nationally," said Rick Ray, CEO of The PARC Group, the master developer of Nocatee. "Being recognized at this level is an honor that motivates us to continue raising the bar for our residents."
Nocatee also received high marks for its public schools, jobs, outdoor activities, and health and fitness amenities, all of which received A grades.
The rankings are calculated based on Niche user data, aggregated student- and parent-submitted surveys, public information and other benchmarks — all statistically balanced to ensure comprehensive and reliable assessments.
ABOUT NOCATEE
"There isn’t a better place to raise a family in the country," according to one reviewer. "Best schools in the state, golf cart accessibility throughout the community, great neighbors, amazing events, two resort-style waterparks and more."
"Nocatee is a place that makes everyone feel welcome and appreciated," wrote another resident. "The amount of support and activities provided to residents is something I have never experienced before."
"You can’t beat it," another reviewer wrote. "We have lived in five different states, and Nocatee is hands down the best place we have ever lived."
As the demand for new homes and the Nocatee Lifestyle continues growing, The PARC Group has announced new neighborhoods planned to open in 2023 and 2024. With new amenities, the addition of two health campuses and many new retailers in its Town Center, it's evident why Newsweek named Nocatee the No. 1 Place to Live in Florida.

DANIEL Helping Local Kids in Crisis for
More than 139 Years
danielkids.org
Daniel serves as an invaluable resource to an average 5,000 children and families each year. The 139-year-old nonprofit was a life-changing resource for Victoria, who initially dropped out of high school after leaving an unhealthy home environment.
“Project Prepare was a lifesaver for me,” said Victoria, who is now a successful realtor, wife, and mother of three. “The staff there instilled a lot of great qualities in me that I still use to this day.”
This program is one of many Daniel provides to help improve the odds for local children and families. The nonprofit is Florida’s oldest childservice agency, assisting an average of 5,000 children and families annually.
“When it comes to local children in crisis on any level, Daniel has always been there,” said Lesley Wells, Daniel’s CEO and president. “And, with the continued help of generous donors and partners, we’ll be able to continue this vital support well into the future.”
Yet Victoria was determined to change her life – paying rent at her friend’s house and starting school again. She was poised to graduate on time, but worried about what to do when school ended.
Fortunately, her social worker introduced her to Project Prepare, Daniel’s nationally recognized independent living program. She secured a safe, low-cost place to stay in the agency’s Independent Living Village and learned independent living and job preparatory skills.
Daniel’s professional team connects hundreds of children with foster and adoptive homes each year. The agency is also a leader in child abuse prevention, strengthening at-risk families and safely reunifying families who’ve experienced previous challenges.
Yet Daniel is perhaps best known for its truly unique residential treatment center on Belfort Road where youth with the most serious emotional and behavioral issues live short term. Daniel’s team provides intensive individual, group/family therapy, psychiatric and behavioral care, as well as academic and recreational services, to help children and teens find new ways to thrive by overcoming traumas they’ve experienced.
For more information about how you can help the children and families Daniel serves through donations or corporate sponsorships, please visit danielkids.org or call 904-296-1055 ext 1033.
More Than A Game: The Impact Youth Sports Has On Kids & Adults
By: Jamal Smith, First Coast YMCA Youth Sports Director, Nassau CountyEvery fall, thousands of local kids ages 2-17 years old participate in a variety of sports through the First Coast YMCA. We’re proud to provide opportunities that create unforgettable memories for kids while teaching them critical lessons in sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, hand-eye coordination, and more. For many, these leagues will be the starting point for a lifelong love of a sport. Countless professional athletes can trace their roots back to YMCA leagues they participated in as kids and a future star could be wearing a First Coast YMCA youth jersey right now. As impactful as the leagues are on the children, they can be equally as meaningful to the parents and adults who serve as coaches. These vital leaders give selflessly of their time to educate and nurture our youth during the most important years of their young lives.
One of the best examples of that is Ryan Barker.
Originally from Montgomery, Alabama, Ryan and his high school sweetheart Chanli came to King’s Bay on orders from the Navy in 2019. After spending three years aboard the USS Rhode Island, Ryan transitioned to an instructor role and which allowed him a more flexible schedule. That, of course, is a relative term for Ryan, who has four children under the age of 11. Still, he wanted to spend more time with his kids and give back to his community. Combine that with his love of sports, and coaching seemed to be a viable opportunity.
Admittedly, Ryan was hesitant heading into his first practice – he had never coached before. But serving in the Navy taught him the value of preparation and he was soon on his way to running drills, roaming the sidelines, and celebrating
with his team after a game well-played.
That first team proved to just be the beginning for Ryan. He’s now routinely coaching multiple teams at the same time at the YMCA at Wildlight. One of his favorite spots at home is the wall of team pictures he has of all the teams he’s coached, which numbers nearly 30. There are many memories on that wall, but one stands out that provided validation early on that he’s doing the right thing.
“During a soccer game, this one kid kept asking me to play goalie,” Ryan recalled. “We’re out there having fun, but he had never practiced being goalie. I’m big on everyone gets to play every position, so I put him in goal. We were tied 1-1 and I put my two best players to be defenders. Lo and behold, my son slide tackled an opposing player, which led to a penalty kick. It was their best player against this kid in goal. Our kid made a diving stop, and I went nuts! I made sure the team knew how big of a play that was. The boy’s mom, who is a single parent, came up to me that next
week and said that was the first time a male role model had made a positive impact in her son’s life. I felt like I really made a difference.”
Stories like that are only possible because adults answer the call to be a coach. True to his military background, Ryan saw a need at the YMCA for coaches and he did something about it. We’re always looking for volunteer and paid coaches for our leagues so if you’re interested, please visit your local YMCA branch.
If you’d like to sign-up your child to participate in our wide array of leagues that include basketball, volleyball, flag football, and soccer, please visit fcymca. org/youth_sports. We offer financial assistance for all of our programming, including youth sports, because we never want the ability to pay to be a barrier for participation in any of our programs or services.
Please come check out all the First Coast YMCA has to offer in youth sports today.

What Is Kidney Disease and How is It Managed?
Most people know that the primary job of the kidneys is to clear waste products from the blood, but it also is important to know a little bit about how this is done, what else the kidneys do, and what happens when things go wrong.
Normal functions of the kidneys
The kidneys are responsible for reclaiming the water and substances the body needs and allow the waste products and any excess water to go out into the urine. In terms of volume, more than 99% of the fluid that is filtered is returned to the blood and less than 1% is excreted.
Causes of kidney disease
Chronic kidney disease is the most common kidney disease in dogs and cats, however, it is far more common in cats. Possible causes of kidney disease are infection, drug related, toxins, cancer, kidney stones, congenital, immune mediated and idiopathic (unknown).
Signs of kidney disease
Chronic kidney disease in dogs and cats comes on very slowly over time and by the time the disease is advanced, the kidneys can be so altered by scarring and inflammation that it can be nearly impossible to determine what exactly initiated the disease process. Unfortunately, because dogs and cats cannot tell us how they feel, kidney disease often is very advanced by the time it is recognized by pet owners and veterinarians.
For the discerning pet owner, the first clue about the possible presence of chronic kidney disease is that his or her pet is producing a larger volume of urine than previously and is drinking more water. These changes occur because, as kidney is damaged, there is increased workload on the rest of the kidney which leads to production of a larger than
normal volume of dilute urine. The animal drinks more to compensate for the loss of an excessive amount of water in the urine. An increase in thirst and urination are the first things to be noticed but, when they occur, the kidneys have already lost about two-thirds of their function and the disease is advanced.
Bloodwork that is run by your veterinarian can give clues about renal disease. In the past, the only way we could detect kidney disease is by measuring the waste products, BUN and creatinine. Unfortunately, when the concentrations of these waste products begin to increase in the blood, the kidneys already have lost about 75% of their function. Later, when the kidneys lose 85% of their function, the concentration of the mineral phosphorus goes up in the blood.
In the last few years, a new blood test called the SDMA has been introduced that allow veterinarians to recognize kidney disease much earlier -- when the kidneys have lost about 40% of their function.
The International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) has developed guidelines (http://www. iris-kidney.com/guidelines/staging.html) to help veterinarians recognize and classify chronic kidney disease in dogs and cats. These guidelines divide the progression of chronic kidney disease into four different stages based on clinical findings and laboratory test results, which help veterinarians recognize kidney disease and treat it appropriately as early as possible.
Once kidney disease is advanced, the pet may show more obvious signs of illness such as lethargy, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, and poor condition of the hair coat may become apparent to pet owners, but unfortunately the
disease is quite advanced at this point. The goal is for the owner to recognize early signs of chronic kidney disease (increased water intake and urine production) and seek veterinary care promptly.
Treatment of kidney disease
The treatment of kidney disease depends on how advanced the kidney disease is and what abnormalities are found during testing.
•Always provide fresh water – never restrict water
•Feed a prescription diet that is restricted in phosphorus and has a moderate amount of protein
•Supplement potassium when needed
•Supplement with a phosphorus binder if the phosphorus remains high in the blood
•Support with medication that helps appetite and nausea.
•Treat hypertension if applicable and monitor regularly
•Monitor for anemia and treat with Epoetin if critically anemic
•Provide regular subcutaneous fluids to help hydration either at home or at the hospital
•Consider adding Porus One to your cat’s food to help reduce uremic toxins
Prognosis
Owners sometimes ask how long their pet will live with chronic kidney disease. The length of time a dog or cat with chronic kidney disease will live is impossible to predict with certainty because the rate of progression of chronic kidney disease varies considerably among individual animals. Some dogs and cats with chronic kidney disease can live several years with conscientious management of their disease by the veterinarian and pet owner.
