nterior Designer Wendy Chandler describes herself as constantly having new ideas. Whether it is design related or business or just about anything, her creative mind is always busy. Wendy says she has never been the type of person to hold back and be fearful in life. Daughter Lindsey agrees, “As a Mom, she has always said to do whatever you are passionate about. Do what makes you happy. I appreciate that about her,” she said. Today, Wendy is an award winning Interior Designer and owner of The Model Home Store & Chandler Designs. She grew up in southern California and always loved spending time with her step-mother viewing model homes. At the time, she thought decorating model homes would be the best job in the world but life had other plans first. At college in Idaho, she met and married her husband, which led her to Jacksonville, Florida. Even though she studied art in college, she became a Dental Hygienist and was focused on raising her three daughters in Fruit Cove. During this period, Wendy did artistic projects, crafts and art with the kids and within the community. She later decided to go into business with a little store and became involved in designing model homes for builders, and the rest is history. Design is a highly creative process for Wendy and she says it comes as second nature. When working with clients she listens to their ideas and finds out what will really make them happy, and then helps make it a reality. The Model Home Store evolved as a way to showcase the signa-

uis Abella’s dynamic combination of charisma and skill is taking the St. Augustine Ballet to new heights. Born in Cuba and a graduate of National School of Ballet in Havana, Cuba, Luis Abella spent many years touring the world with diverse dance companies including the Bellas Artes Nacional of Mexico, the Minnesota Ballet and the University of Miami Ballet. Today he is the Artistic Director of the St. Augustine Ballet and Abella’s School of Dance in St. Augustine. In the three short years since he opened his dance school he has created a reputation for excellence. This year one of his students was accepted to the prestigious HARID Conservatory in Boca Raton, FL. But this is just the beginning for Luis. He is excited to see the development of students who began training with him at very young age. In dance, demanding work is required, with some of his serious ballerinas training as much as five hours a day. He uses the American Ballet Curriculum but adds his own stamp. He says being a good ballet teacher is complex. It is not enough to have been a ballerina. One must know injury prevention and anatomy as well as technique. Having grown up in Cuba, Mr. Abella takes nothing for granted. He loves living in America, being part of the ballet world here. His passion for dance and his work shines through when he speaks of the unparalleled diversity of the American dance scene. He believes this is what makes it great and is thrilled to be a part of it.

an Blewit is the owner of Monkey Bars Garage Storage. On the surface, he is an ordinary person. He is a graduate of USF with a degree in Economics and is the owner of a successful business here in St. Johns. He is a nine year resident of Fruit Cove with a wonderful family. He has been married to his wife Carla for twenty years. He has two teenage sons, ages 14 and 16, who attend Creekside High School, and are on the varsity swim team. He has an 86 pound Golden Retriever named Luke and a rabbit named Chewy. He describes himself as honest and dependable and his clients agree since all his jobs are guaranteed for life. We call Dan Blewit an entrepreneur with heart because of his special work with local charities. About six years ago his son, Michael, was in the PACE program at Cunningham Creek Elementary. The school was hosting a “Dream Party”, and he and his wife Carla decided to make the cake. They didn’t want a boring cake, so they made their first 3D cake (Hello Kitty). It was such a big hit that the Dreams Come True organizers asked if they could make a “Christmas Dream”. They did and have made cakes for them since. “I don’t ask for any recognition and very few people know of our contribution, but it makes me feel awesome. We drop off the cakes before the party and get photos of the event afterwards. I never meet the Families, but am glad to bring a little joy to children with terminal illnesses,” Dan said. In addition, Monkey Bars supports local groups and sports teams and contributes to Betty Griffin House, often, many times from garages of local residents.

t is clear to everyone who lives here that the CR 210 Corridor is experiencing rapid growth and change. Thankfully, a group of neighbors has come together to preserve and enhance our community culturally, aesthetically, and socially. Striving for a better quality of life through community involvement, the 210 Community Alliance keeps abreast of what is happening locally and has a strong representative voice. They are comprised of local entrepreneurs, and other community members who volunteer their time and efforts to create events and monitor new building projects that will have an impact on the area. As their
210 on Tap, a new networking event, is the Alliance’s latest endeavor. It is held monthly at local businesses along CR 210, giving people a chance to network, share ideas and stay informed. ou may have already met Sal and Angi Palmieri, a local power couple on the rise. Together they have created three successful companies and the sky is the limit. Sal Palmieri is a personal trainer, physical therapist, athlete and coach who has worked with Ned Jarret of NASCAR and Stacey Hatcher with the Pro Volleyball Tour and members of the NFL. His wife Angi Palmieri is a dynamic program manager and special events professional. They merged these unique skills and began building their dreams. Sal started Wellness Concepts Health and Fitness in 1997, providing fitness programs for planned communities. Business was strong and after realizing the opportunities for expansion, Angi left her career in non-profit management to launch Elite Amenities, which manages aquatics staffing, recreational and athletic programs for children and adults, summer camps, and other special events for many local communities in Northwestern St. Johns and Duval. Their newest venture is Ultimate Racing Inc, launched in 2011. Sal’s years of experience in the fitness industry as an athlete, athletic trainer and coach led him to direct and sponsor local triathlons, cycling teams and running clubs. The first race was the annual Run to the Sun in New Smyrna Beach in memory of Angi’s father. Since then, Ultimate Racing has created eight signature races annually and found a niche in executing community-based runs such as the Gingerbread Man 5k at Heritage Landing each December. They are also held the 210 West 5K Challenge at St. Johns Golf and Country Club on April 27th. Both Angi and Sal are motivated to give back to the community and service plays an important role for their businesses. Sal is a founder and serves on the Board of the Christina Phipps Foundation, which offers assistance to breast cancer survivors through specialized yoga programs. Angi directs the Jefferson H Ridgdill Run the Sun Memorial 5K, which supports numerous charities including St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the Boggy Creek Gang Camp, LIVESTRONG Foundation, MDA, Wounded Warrior Project and Shriners Hospital for Children. ***Moveres & Shakers of St. Johns Continued on pages 21 & 22

o, you think you don’t hear well, or MAYBE you think your husband, wife, mother, father or someone you care for does not hear well. Where do you start? Start with a hearing test. Tests, awful word, nobody likes tests. Everyone can remember sitting in a classroom, worrying about ‘passing’. Relax, breathe deeply. There is no studying or grading for a hearing test. What is a hearing test, or better yet, a comprehensive hearing evaluation? A hearing evaluation will discover the type, severity and degree of hearing ability. To determine this both speech and pure tones are used. The speech evaluation includes 2 components: determining the softest level of speech you can hear and recognize, Speech Reception Threshold (SRT). Then speech is raised to a comfortable loudness and your ability to understand or discriminate speech is determined. A lot of research was done to determine which words to include in these lists of words. Speech recognition/discrimination/understanding assesses and determines if speech is truly clear. The next component is determining how well or at what loudness can you detect tones of different pitch or frequency. Lots of people have objected to this part of the evaluation. ‘I came here to learn how well I hear people not funny tones.’ Pure testing is very important and tells us about the inner ear. Scientifically, sounds can be described by their frequency /pitch and loudness/level. Let’s be clear, pitch and loudness are 2 different things. Pitch is a musical quality, bass vs. soprano. Loudness is a whisper vs. yelling. The inner ear nerves and hair cells each hear individual pitches. The inner ear is laid-out just like a piano keyboard; each nerve hears a tone of different pitch. Pure tone testing determines what’s going on in the inner ear. Finally pure tone testing should be delivered via both headphones and bone vibrators. A headphone is placed over the ear or into the ear canal and tests all 3 parts of the ear: outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. A bone vibrator is placed on the head and only tests the inner ear, bypassing the outer and middle ear. The headphone testing and bone vibrator testing equals each other; it is a nerve, sensori-neural hearing loss. There is no surgery or medication to correct a sensori-neural hearing loss, but a hearing aid may help. If they do not, and the bone testing is better, a referral to a physician, specifically an ENT physician is needed to determine if medication and/or surgery will correct the hearing problem. Only a complete hearing evaluation has both headphone and bone conduction testing. I have had many patients tell me ‘I have had hearing tests before but never bone conduction testing’. They did not have a complete test. Learn about your hearing. Get a hearing evaluation from a qualified tester, a doctor of audiology. A doctor of audiology has a college education and thoroughly trained to determine the type, severity and degree of hearing ability and whether or not, a hearing aid will help.

s a history teacher, I’ve always encouraged my students to travel and visit the faraway places we study. Learning is raised to a whole different level if you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture. Even though obstacles to foreign travel certainly exist, I believe there is no better education. I count myself fortunate to have lived overseas and as I’ve come to learn, there is a great opportunity for locals who are interested in experiencing another culture but can’t get away. I recently met with Susan James, local Community Coordinator for Step to USA, a student travel and exchange program that brings high school students from Spain to the First Coast for a home-stay each July. Susan, who will be hosting her 21st exchange student this summer, has been coordinating for Step to USA for quite some time and is in need of host families for students arriving June 30th. Host families will give a month-long commitment and be required to provide a bed, meals and limited transportation, while the student immerses themselves in American culture, experiencing

Pet Pages A Message from the Vet Heartworms Are Deadly

few weeks ago a wonderful client of ours brought in their daughter’s dog, Ojay. Ojay was ten years old. The client had taken over care of the dog. Ojay had been an outdoor dog for all ten years of his life. The kids had not taken him to a vet since he was a puppy. They wanted a dog but not to be a part of the family, just out in the yard, chained to a tree in the shade. Ojay was now paying the price of the young people’s neglect. He had heartworms. He did not have a few. He had enough of them for long enough that he was dying from them. Ojay was coughing and having trouble breathing. In spite of medication to treat him for heartworm induced heart failure, Ojay got worse and worse over the next 2 weeks. His belly got bigger and bigger as his lung arteries became more and more obstructed to blood flow, backing up fluid into his abdomen. Finally, he passed away. Why am I telling the story of Ojay? Ojay is the first dog I have seen in my career die of heartworms. Indiana, where I practiced for 21 years, has heartworms, but not like Florida. Florida has way more mosquitoes all year round than Indiana. Those mosquitoes have many more opportunities to bite your pets and spread heartworms. Ojay’s passing is sad enough but the fact that I have to tell other clients every day that their pet is not getting enough heartworm medication is what is really sad. In spite of the fact that there are heartworm-spreading mosquitoes all year here people still want to give heartworm medication “only in the warm months.” It gets cold here for a few days. It takes a prolonged freeze to kill a mosquito. It has been proven that Indiana has mosquitoes in January – Indiana! They fly into a protect notch in a tree when it is cold and find protection! This is Florida. No chance enough are killed in winter here. Let me say in no uncertain terms: “Every dog and cat needs to be on heartworm and flea and tick medication year round in Florida.” If you know young people who have a pet, check with them to be sure that they are getting these products as well. How would you feel if your kids’ dog died of heartworms and you could have prevented it? I am sure, pretty bad. “But my dog is a little Yorkie only goes out to wee-wee and comes back in.” I have heard this before. Let me be perfectly clear. I have treated a three and a half pound Yorkie for heartworms. And cats get heartworms too. The female heartworm is 13 inches long. That is one or more thirteen inch worms in a Yorkshire Terrier’s heart and lungs. Dogs can have over 80! A Yorkie could die within months. Test dogs once a year. Medicate every month all year.

Christian Hip Hop Artist 21 year old Marcellus “Cellus” Brown, who was born and raised in St. Augustine, started performing in 2009 as a “rapper on a mission to make a change in the world”. In middle school, Cellus met Mark Hiers, the owner of Rhino’s, which provides a safe haven for youth. His latest album, Forever Love, was celebrated at a release party on March 23 at Rhino’s in St Augustine. It can be found on itunes, CD Baby, and Amazon. Some of his memorable experiences include performing at the Black Expo in Charleston and in Jacksonville. Cellus is looking forward to performing on May 5 at the Festival of Nations. In addition to his music, Cellus works and attends St. Johns River State College, majoring in Business Management. “I would love to have a job that allowed me to meaningfully contribute to our community and allowed me the flexibility to pursue the music career,” he says.
