St. Johns Magazine is an upbeat magazine focused on the good things in life, and one of them is living is St. Johns Florida! Our main purpose is to help connect local communities in northwestern St. Johns, Florida. St. Johns Magazine keeps readers intrigued and inspired with articles for and about local people places and events.

a note from the

publisher Dear Readers, First comes love, then comes ah, yes the wedding. Ours was an intimate affair on the sand at Boynton Beach Florida. There was a sunset, lots tears (mine) and laughter (Darren’s) and blessings. The shocking thing was that we planned Photo by Graham Martin it during the 3-week window we had in the states before reAncient City Photography turning to South Korea to teach English. We were engaged for about a year and finally just decided to make it happen. My only two regrets were that because it was such short notice, many friends I love could not make it, and we did not have a professional photographer so there are very few good pictures. Ironically, we will celebrate seventeen years together on January 27th! Did you know that most people become engaged at Christmastime? That is why the bridal planning season is in full swing by January. In today’s world, a three-week planning period just would not cut it. There are so many choices and making the day perfectly reflect your style and personality takes much forethought. This month we give you The Bride Guide – we hope it helps our newly engaged brides, their fiancés, and their families plan it just the way they want it with a little help from the local businesses featured in our magazine this month. I also wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year 20-14! My personal resolution is to take care of myself better by exercising more, eating right and going to the doctor for a physical. This is my year to appreciate my health. What is your resolution for 20-14?

Here Comes St. Johns Magazine’s

BRIDE Guide

Depending on how you approach it, planning a wedding can be an overwhelming experience, or you could have a laid back, St. Johns-style attitude and have a lot of fun! Experienced Wedding Planner, Pauala Navaro of A Vision Events, says you need the right componenents to come together for the big day to be a stress-free. One of these is finding the right planner who not only understands your vision but has the ability to pull it out of your imagination and make it real. Navaro also says that the key to choosing a planner is chemistry. For stress that inevitably comes as the big day gets closer, local Wedding Planner Lynn Covington of Unique Signature Events, shares some pointers that will help you remain calm and carry on with ease: Step 1: Make a list of all your vendors. This will make sure that you have a vendor for each category and you have not missed one. Step 2: Call to confirm them. DO NOT EMAIL, emails sometimes get over looked lost or do not make it to the vendor at all. When confirming you should make sure they have the date correct and confirm the time they will be there. Step 3: Pick a day of Coordinator, although hiring one is best because the professional knows how to fix things when they go wrong. If that is not in the budget your coordinator should be someone who is NOT in the Bridal party. The coordinator will be responsible for checking vendors in, making sure the set up is going ok. They cannot do this if they are supposed to be getting ready with you. Step 4: Get a lot of rest the night before, plan to arrive early on that day, do all of your appointments in one place so that you can eliminate getting stuck in traffic or getting into an accident because you are rushing.

Let Us Show You What 20 Years of Experience Can Do For Your Special Day 17

Dive into North Florida’s

Best Bridal Show & Make the Most of It!

Getting married? Your local bridal shows can help in many different ways. Bridal shows allow you to meet and ask questions from a variety of wedding professionals all under one roof. These events allow you to gather information, compare prices and services, register for prizes, see the latest fashion, sample culinary delicacies, and have a lot of fun with family and friends. Here are some suggestions that will help you get the most from your local bridal show experience:

Buy Your Tickets In Advance

Many shows will offer discounts with online ticket purchases. By purchasing tickets in advance will provide a greater convenience and value for you and your attending guests.

Do Your Homework

Planning a wedding does not happen by itself. You should brainstorm with others prior to the bridal show and bring with you questions to ask the vendors. Check the bridal show’s website for a list of participating businesses and target those you are most interested in seeing. Calling and introducing yourself in advance of the show is perfect and a great ice-breaker. If you are visiting the show to look for ideas come with some sense of what you’d like. The general idea is to gather information at the event and then ask the vendors you like best for an appointment at their place where they can go over the finer details.

Be Sociable and Engaging

ing these shows is to see which vendors match your personality the best. Not all vendors are the same. Don’t necessarily go for the louder and more boisterous persona. There are some very talented wedding professionals who possess a quiet demeanor. A shy florist might easily provide services as impressive as those of an outgoing coordinator. Listen to the vendors. If their product or service is one you need and they are busy talking with someone else, stand close and feel free to wait until they are available.

Take Advantage Of Everything

Show promoters will often provide honeymoon vacations as well as other services they have solicited from the vendors and use them as grand-prize giveaways, runner-up prizes, and door prizes. However, some vendors will offer drawings for prizes at their individual booths too. Take advantage of them all! Bring address labels with your printed name, address, phone number, email, and wedding date to use with these registrations. This will provide convenience, save you lots of time, and possibly prevent you from getting writers cramp. IMPORTANT: You may wish to set up a separate email account and use this for your wedding planning and when visiting bridal shows. After such an event vendors will want to contact you and it would be more convenient to have a separate account to use and review at your leisure instead of your personal email blowing up with messages after each event.

Make A Day Of It

Try and visit every booth. You may have your preferred vendors and targeted list but these shows are full of a variety of professionals; some spending a thousand dollars or more to be there. Chances are you’ll find something you like or something you’ll decide later to use in your wedding and by visiting all the booths you’ll then have the information in hand and ahead of time. Plan a “recess” about every hour or so. Go play the casino tables, sample more of the food, get a drink, or schedule a bathroom break. Take your time. They’ll be plenty of opportunity to visit all the vendors.

Make an effort to be friendly and initiate the conversation. Part of visit-

Plan to spend all day and get the most out of it. IMPORTANT: It is suggested to dress casual and wear comfortable shoes. You will be doing a lot of walking.

Oceanside Patio Dining A Great View from Every Inside Seat

Friends Are The Family You Choose It is a good idea to bring along some family members and

friends. Bringing your Fiance is not a bad idea either if they’re up to it. In many bridal shows there are things specifically for the guys to do. One idea is, if in a group, to take separate cars and allow those who wish to leave early to do so. Bringing your wedding party can also help share in the planning process by allowing others to offer their opinions and thoughts about the potential choices. Children are usually welcomed and are often let in for free.

It’s All About The Fashion! Many, but not

all, bridal shows have a fashion presentation. The Bridal Fantasy Events of Jacksonville boast of having one of the more superior runway bridal fashion events in the state of Florida. It is absolutely spectacular! When you first arrive ask when the fashion show is scheduled and begin your day knowing when you can be expected to be seated. Venues: The Road Less Traveled From Breathtaking Beaches to First City History, Art & Architecture,

Downtown St. Augustine is an Unforgettable Location for a Wedding Photograph Courtesy of FLagler College

Whether your nuptials are intimate or a grand affair choosing a venue is one of the most important decisions you will make. If you want to forget convention and wander off the beaten path, look no further than downtown St. Augustine. Our little city receives many accolades in the national press for its unique combination of history meets beachy art scene, so it is no surprise brides searching for that one-of-a-kind venue will find it here. With some of the most unusual architecture (courtesy of the Robber Barons & Spanish dignitaries) and places of historical interest as well as just plain interesting attractions, St. Augustine is an amazing location for your wedding. St. Johns Magazine has put together a list of our Top 6 favorites:

receptions, galas, parties, and dinners. Highlighting the architectural heritage of the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, the Ponce de Leon Ballroom is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture. The ballroom is surrounded by Tiffany stained glass windows, murals by George W. Maynard and lavishly carved wooden columns. This spectacular room is the largest of the three venues and has a high arching ceiling and hardwood floors. There is a kitchen area with a private entrance for caterers. The 8,990 square-foot facility serves as a cocktail reception area for 400 guests and a dining salon for 300. http://www.flagler.edu/departments/SpecialEvents/

of an elegant Southern estate. The grace of a stately and contemporary art gallery. Flagler College presents three unique, showstopping venues for your unforgettable day. Once an exclusive and opulent playground for the world’s most privileged elite, the grounds of Flagler College today offer one of the most unique, most charming wedding and banquet facilities in the Southeast. The versatility and elegance make it an ideal site for wedding

Historical types may wish to go back in time and hold their wedding ceremony & reception at the Oldest House Museum, a National Historic Landmark situated in downtown. The Garden at the Oldest House Museum is protected from the street by high walls. It is a traditional ornamental garden containing plants grown by the Spanish, British and American colonists and makes an idyllic and historic site for your special day. http://www.staugustinehistoricalsociety.org/oldhouse.html

Top 10 Mistakes Mistakes Top Brides Make Brides Make LynnCovington Covingtonof of Unique Unique Signature Signature Event bybyLynn Events

10. Shopping by Price only:

Budgets are important and they will allow you to see which vendors you can afford. The saying,” You get what you pay for” holds true. Vendors who hold value in what they offer will cost more than a novice but these vendors are season and will ensure that your wedding is the reality you envisioned.

9. Bringing to many people to vendor meetings: Having too many opinions will make, making a decision harder. When it comes to wedding planning everyone wants to be involved, however, it should be the Bride plus two at the vendor meetings. Keep in mind the Brides’ opinion is the one that matters.

8. Having too many Brides maids: The rule of thumb is one bridesmaid for every 30

people. So if you are planning a wedding for 100 people there should be three (three) Bridesmaids. This helps when you are ordering dresses and having people attending rehearsals. The less people that are in the bridal party the less drama you should have when it comes to the planning of the Bridal shower and bachelorette parties.

7. Not setting a budget: Weddings are emotional and most brides want what they want.

However, the wedding is just one day. Bills still have to be paid after the wedding. The budget allows for you and your fiancé to not go into debt. Set a budget and stick with it.

6. Buying all inclusive packages: One stop shops are convenient. Vendors will begin

to pair services and products that they don’t use all the time into these inclusive packages. Inclusive packages are the bases of each service and if you want to customize as most clients do it will cost you extra to “upgrade”. The best way to avoid the upgrades is to only pay for what you want.

5. Having Family as your vendors: Family is always there to help when needed. Family should enjoy this day with you and not serving your guests.

Professionals have done the research and have the experience to adapt to any sudden changes that might happen that day. Family members are not equipped to do so. Always hire a professional. 4. Not knowing what the average wedding cost: Once engaged most couples begin just planning their wedding they do not know what the average wedding in their city costs. This will be helpful in knowing if you should plan a destination wedding or if the budget will allow for you to have an elegant wedding.

3: Not asking for referrals: Once you have booked a trusted vendor ask them who they trust for your other vendor needs. You will be surprised what each vendor knows about the others in the wedding industry. These referrals are just as good as reviews.

2. Procrastination: The average wedding takes about a year to plan. This sounds like a long time but a year will quickly go by if you do not work on items a little by little. Keeping in mind that some things must be done ahead of time in order for the day to run smoothly.

1. Not Hiring a Planner: The Wedding planner is the bride’s personal assistant! The planner’s job is to make sure the bride and her guests are taken

care of at the wedding. The wedding planner works with the bride to bring her dream wedding to reality. The day of the wedding the planner is the quarterback ensuring that each vendor is in place to make sure the wedding goes off without a hitch. Even if you do not have full service wedding planner a day of coordinator is always needed!!!

How many attended? 150 What made your day unique? Our day was unique because we were combining our two cultures (Middle Eastern and Hispanic) so we had music from both cultures along with unique elements like our entrance to the reception to the Florida State University war chant, the school we met at. Something you were thrilled about? I was thrilled with everything including being able to spend the day celebrating with family and friends. We had a great reception room with a beautiful view of the river, the DJ kept everyone dancing and we had a photo booth that was a big hit and lots of fun. Something you wish you had done differently? I wish I didn’t worry so much about the small details because either way everyone had a great time. Advice for a new bride? Be organized and don’t worry too much about all the small details.

How many attended- 150 What made your day unique- I think my wedding cake was the most unique. Every year on my birthday my mom makes me a yellow cake, with chocolate icing and rainbow sprinkles. My dad does not like sprinkles so I always had to leave one piece of the cake plain for him. I always told him that on my wedding day my cake would be covered in rainbow sprinkles, but I don’t think he ever thought that could really happen. Well it did! My wedding cake was a rainbow sprinkle cake and was the cutest most unique thing in my eyes. Something you were thrilled aboutI was thrilled about everything! The day was absolutely perfect. I knew everything would turn out exactly how I dreamed and would be beautiful. I did worry a lot about the weather since my wedding was outside in the gardens and luckily it was the most perfect day, I couldn’t of asked for better weather conditions. Something you wish you had done differently- I wish I would of planned my exit a little better. When I was planning my wedding the exit didnt seem that important to me. Looking back I wish I would of done something because I dont think I saw anyone as I was finally leaving. Advice for a new bride- Dont dwell on the small things like linens. To be honest I don’t even remember my linens. Have fun with the wedding planning because soon it’ll all be over, dont let it stress you out. And take in every single moment starting at rehearsal dinner because it flies by! The whole day seems like a complete blur to me, but what I do know is I smiled more that day

than I ever have in my life. I wish I could replay my wedding every weekend. I am sad it is over.

Planning (Ahead) for the Big Day Rosann W. Faull, Au.D. CCC-A Board Certified Doctor of Audiology Your Community Resource for Better Hearing www.drfaull.com/ 904-262-5550 Happy New Year, 2014!!! In this issue we are celebrating weddings, which is a wonderful time for families and friends to get together. Many of us use weddings as an excuse for family reunions. This often is an excuse to buy a new dress, suit or lose that weight. My sister-in-law Pat lost 30 pounds before her daughter’s wedding just to show her ex-husband how good she ‘still look’s’. Or, finally come in and get help for Grandma’s hearing, Dad’s hearing or your hearing. Yes, I’ve had those calls: “You have got to help me hear better at my daughter’s wedding, next week”. NEXT WEEK!!! No, No, not next week, the process takes more time than that. So, let’s review the process. Of course there is the hearing evaluation. Do you know that by FDA (Food and Drug Administration) definition hearing aids are medical devices? And as such both the FDA and Florida Department of Health has minimum requirements for hearing evaluations. A complete hearing evaluation includes testing your ability to detect pure tone and speech, and very importantly is to determine your ability to understand speech. Speech understanding or discrimination testing is done by presenting a researched list of at least 25 words to determine how clearly you recognize words. These words are presented in both quiet at a level that is easily heard and in the presence of background noise. A diagnostic hearing test determines if surgery or medicine can correct your hearing. If your hearing loss is from damage to your hearing nerves, no surgery or medicine can correct it. But properly prescribed and fit hearing aids can help you. I work with more than one hearing aid manufacturer to find the best hearing aid for your listening needs and wallet. Another very important part of prescribing a hearing aid is the trial period. By Florida law it is 30 days. I use this time to slowly accommodate/acclimate the newly fit person to this noisy world. The first visit is when the hearing aid is fit and completely orienting you on how to use hearing aids. Demonstrating and teaching you to insert the battery and hearing aids and scheduling a 1 week follow-up appointment. At least 3 follow-up appointments are schedule, usually at 1 week, 2 or 3 weeks after fitting hearing aids. This is when questions are answered and slowing the volume is increased. And then, at the end of 30 days you decide. Are you happy with this model? If not let’s try another manufacturer. If nothing I do helps you may return the hearing aids, it is state law. I do not know another device that you can use and return after 30 days. But you may, there will be a small fee, if returned. Now you know the process, let’s get started. Now is the time to try hearing aids before a summer wedding. Get a complete diagnostic hearing evaluation, get the right model for your listening needs, complete the 30 day trial period and become acclimated to this noisy world. When you attend that special event you can hear all the wonderful music and conversation. Your family and friends will be happy you can join the conversation and you will not miss any family news. Like my sister-in-law Pat, you’ll be putting your best face forward.

Pet Care & Health with Dr. Veling, DVM

When Referral Is Needed A Message from The Vet Dr. Veling, DVM Palencia Pet Clinic

Recently, a wonderful, 9 year old, black Labrador Retriever

named Noelle was brought in for a lump on her lower right eyelid. The growth was approximately a centimeter (cm) wide. The eye otherwise looked normal. Hair still grew on it. On a passing look, the tumor was no big deal. The owner, a neighbor, related that the lump had gotten larger for a while. It got smaller again a day later. This bothered me. Noelle deserved more than a passing look.

Normally, I would do a fine needle aspirate on a lump like this.

Because of the lump’s location that test would endanger her eye if done while Noelle was awake. A few days later we ended up sedating her. When I stained the microscope slide and looked at it under the microscope I could see our old enemy, the mast cell tumor.

I am no stranger to mast cell tumors. I know how dangerous

they are – very. I know that they need to be removed fast and with a 3 cm perimeter margin. The problem with Lucy’s is the fact that it occurred on her eyelid. If I remove the tumor I have to remove 4+ cm of the right side of her face leaving her without her lower eyelid. Cosmetically, this would

Warm, Compassionate, Affordable Care

not be acceptable.

Clearly, Noelle had special needs. I called a veterinary oncology

specialist in Jacksonville. They told me that the best thing for Noelle would be to have radiation. In that manner, her eyelid can be spared. Noelle is very lucky. Her pet parents said yes to radiation treatments. Her owners

904-824-1622

are lucky. This form of radiation is only slightly expensive. Some radiation treatments are very expensive. The same techniques used in people are used in pets. The systems used to irradiate the tumor cost veterinary specialists just as much as human oncology specialty centers. There is no discount from manufacturers to veterinarians because we work with pets. Hopefully, by the time you read this Noelle will have begun her radiation. We have very high hope of a cure without disfiguring her. The point of this article is to ask a question. If this happened to your pet would you be able to pay for the treatment for your dog or cat? If you can afford several thousand dollars to fix your dog at a specialty center, count yourselves lucky. Most pet owners can’t. Most pet owners assume that they will always be able to pay the bill. Then they find out a regular veterinarian cannot do all the treatments a pet may need. If a referral is necessary, it gets expensive quickly. It is not the fault of the specialist. They go to years of extra training to be a specialist. They pay for expensive medications and treatments to use on pets. The simple answer is to use pet insurance. Do your homework. Check them out on-line. Then get pet insurance if you can’t afford thousands of dollars of care.

....After the Wedding The post-wedding checklist by Erica Bean Print My Picture Online Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials! Your wedding day will be beautiful and the memories will last a lifetime. Remember, thank you cards are not the only thing left to do before you can relax and enjoy newlywed bliss. CAUTION- Don’t wait until after the wedding to read this! 1. Make sure your signed marriage certificate has been mailed to the local Registrar in the town where you were married. 2. If you are going to change your name, get to it! Bring a certified copy of your marriage certificate and your old Social Security card to the Social Security Office. 3. If you have changed your name or address, bring your new Social Security Card, marriage certificate and driver’s license to your local DMV for a new driver’s license. 4. Change your name and address at work, including your W4s and other tax forms. Usually you can contact your HR department to obtain the proper paperwork. 5. About those finances...... If you are going to be combining accounts, wait until you have your new IDs (if you are changing your name) so that you can avoid having to change the account information later. 6. Don’t wait until tax time to speak with your accountant about how you will be filing your taxes. 7. Update your name and address on all of your credit cards accounts and bank or brokerage accounts.. 8. Change your life insurance beneficiary information to include your husband, (go ahead, we know you want to say it! HUSBAND). Additionally, add him to your emergency contact information at work. 9. Get your wedding photography on the walls! Plan time to get your portraits printed- they are likely to stay on your walls for many years and you are going to want everyone to see them. We would love to help you with this! PRINT-

Use a dress shop such as David’s Bridal to have it cleaned and preserved. 12. Traditionally the top tier of the wedding cake is frozen to be eaten together on the first year anniversary. Assign someone to get your top cake tier packaged up properly. However, I may forgo waiting till the first year anniversary! You picked the perfect cake for the event; I suggest you enjoy it at your one month anniversary, before it tastes like everything else in your freezer! Should you choose to go with the traditional one year, ask about the best cakes for preservation at your cake tasting appointment. 13. If you have Gift Registry returns you should get those done within a few weeks. Most stores have a 60-90 day return policy- even with a receipt. If any of your guests are like me, they shopped early! 14. What about the Bridesmaids Dresses? Did you choose a dress they will love to wear over and over; or did you choose a dress that was meant for a once in a life time event-YOUR WEDDING!? If your Bridesmaids are not going to wear their dress again, consider suggesting that they make it a once in a life time dress for someone else! I have listed a few sites that provide free prom dresses to girls who otherwise could not afford one to attend their prom. Each of them has inspiring stories! * Becca’s Closet * *The Princess Project* *The Princess and the Prom* * Fairy Godmothers* 15.
