12 Great Beach Reading

Dear Reader, When I was a kid, July was spent swimming, doing arts and crafts & making up dances and performing them on my front porch with my best friend. The days seemed to stretch out forever and the warm nights were filled with a magic feeling because we stayed up just a little later playing hide and seek under the stars. Everyone was in a good mood and there was always so much to look forawrd to, whether it was a big trip in the car, camping or cookouts. Now that I am older, I still relish the freedom of summer, and look forward to the change of pace it offers. Our family takes every opportunity to do things differently in the warmer months. Its time to relax, shift gears and escape. We eat dinner out more often, take time away to read a few great books; or just visit family and watch our children play with cousins! To help you make the most of your JULY (even if you are not traveling) our content is all about entertainment and enjoyment, dining activities, movies and books! I hope you love this issue of St. Johns Magazine!

Summer Entertainment

IDEAS by Angie Bell

A

s St. Johns County grows, so grows its opportunities for entertainment. There are outdoor and indoor venues, daytime and nighttime occasions, and activities for all ages.

thing from Southern rock to acoustic guitar; The Cellar Upstairs at San Sebastian Winery has music Friday-Sunday; Mill Top Tavern has music seven days a week year-round.

Musical Merriment

If you are looking for something the whole family can enjoy, there are numerous choices. Bayfront Golf, next to the Bridge of Lions, is Florida’s oldest miniature golf course. Fiesta Falls Mini-Golf is one mile south of the pier at the beach with an outdoor party deck for birthdays and events. Adventure Landing is located less than five minutes from great shopping at the St. Augustine Premium Outlet Mall. The park has mini-golf, an arcade, go-karts, batting cages, and a Maxflight Coaster Simulator. At the World Golf Hall of Fame, there is an 18-hole, real grass championship putting course for $5 with ball and putters included. You can also see 3D movies at the IMAX Theater, which shows both documentary-style IMAX® films, as well as full-length feature films. The Great White Shark 3D is coming in August.

There are numerous places to enjoy all genres of music in St. Johns County. One cozy location is The Original Café Eleven at St. Augustine Beach. This locally owned and operated establishment, just across the street from the beach, has been on the scene since 2001. Be sure to arrive in plenty of time before a show to enjoy a delicious dinner. With steak to vegetarian choices, a large selection of craft beers and a dessert case, you won’t be disappointed. The St. Augustine Amphitheatre has room for over 4000. This outdoor area on Anastasia Island has been host to such big names as Peter Frampton and Ringo Starr. Shows in the near future include: July 6th– Big Time Rush; July 20th – Sublime with Rome; July 26th – The Monkees; August 9 – Alabama. One of the newest venues for concerts is the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. This multipurpose facility is a transformation of the former Cornerstone Baptist Church. It has a large performance stage as well as catering facilities. Upcoming performances include: July 24th - Toad the Wet Sprocket; July 25th - The Psychedelic Furs. Other musical venues include Rhett’s Piano Bar and Brasserie; Stogies Jazz Club & Listening Room, which is a refuge for smokers; The Tasting Room with live music every night from 8-12pm.; Tradewinds Lounge, with every-

Scenic Sprees

By land or by sea, there are many tours to choose from. For over 30 years, Old Town Trolley Tours has been entertaining and educating, with 22 stops and over 100 points of interest. They also give specialty tours, such as the Chocolate Tour. Ripley’s Sightseeing Trains run every day except Christmas, with a special 3-day pass available. You can bring your well-behaved, leashed pets along on the St. Augustine Scenic Cruise to see historical landmarks and natural sites of interest. Or try The Pirate Ship Black Raven, which offers different types of adventure cruises, from The Family Adventure to Club 21. For a slower pace, Country Carriages offers a wide variety of horse drawn carriage services as well as horseback riding on the beach.

Diverse Diversions

If you like to ooh-and-aah over curiosities or get spooked over a good ghost story, there are some entertaining places just for you. Ripley’s First Believe It Or Not Odditorium, with over 40 new exhibits, is housed in an 1880’s poured concrete castle. The Ripley’s Ghost Train Adventure begins nightly at 8pm., with its first stop at the burial grounds of the Old Fairbanks Plantation. Potter’s Wax Museum on Orange Street always has “someone” new. One of the latest additions is Tiger Woods.

the summer, ending August 16. Guests can bring blankets or beach chairs for seating. Shows will start at 8:30 pm. at the Marina, with refreshments on sale at the Mini Golf outlet. July’s movies are: From Here to Eternity (5th), The Never Ending Story (10th), Please Don’t Eat the Daisies (12th), Blank Check (17th), Driving Miss Daisy (19th), Hook (24th), The Princess Bride (26th) and Despicable Me (31st) The “Community First Night Owl Cinema Series”, sponsored by Community First Credit Union and the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, will also stretch over the summer months at the Amphitheatre. Movies are on select Fridays at 8pm. Parking is free and concessions are available. Next up will be Rise of the Guardians on July 12th, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl on August 12th. There are several other places where St. Johns County residents can get in free, such as the Lightner Museum, Fountain of Youth, and San Sebastian Winery’s free daily tours and wine tastings. As you can see, St. Johns County is not lacking in the entertainment field. From golf to ghosts, music to movies, there is something for everyone.

Nick Crouch by Debbie Gaylord Photographed by Cher Brown

N

ick Crouch lives, sleeps and breaths his work as the owner of two Tropical Smoothie Cafe Franchises in St. Johns County, one at the Shoppes of Murabella and the other on CR 210. He says when he goes home at night he cannot wait to get back to work the next day, which is pretty cool when you are only twenty-seven years old. The road to that sweet spot began when Nick was only twenty-one years old. He graduated from college with a degree in business. He left his parents and his hometown of Columbia, Missouri and headed out to California. There he landed a coveted position at the Del Mar Country Club in San Diego, whose members include people like Bill Gates and Phil Mickelson. He loved golf so it was the perfect place for him to grow professionally. But anyone who has ever met Nick knows he is a bundle of kinetic energy with a mercurial intelligence and it was not long before he mastered the position and craved more of a challenge. One day, a prominent member asked Nick why he was there wasting away behind a desk. The gentleman told Nick he thought he should become an entrepreneur, and the wheels began to turn. Meeting the millionaire and billionaire members at Del Mar was a learning experience. He learned that a successful entrepreneur could own anything, a car wash, a boutique or a nail salon, and he decided he was going to go out and make it happen for himself. He loved the golf and beach lifestyle of southern California but did not like the cost of living. After doing some research, he discovered Northern Florida, a place with the same amenities but at lower “mid-western” prices. He flew in for a visit to St. Augustine and was hooked. He decided he would invest his savings in a franchise so he began researching dozens of options. Tropical Smoothie, with its laid-back atmosphere and delicious healthy food and smoothies seemed like the perfect restaurant for health-conscious local families. He started with the existing Tropical Smoothie on 210, and recently opened the second brand new location in World Golf ’s Murabella area. His business philosophy is simple: “In life the only way to learn is to do it.” In other words, he doesn’t wait

10

around. He decides he is going to accomplish something and he does it. He also realized early on that you have to choose the right people to work on your team and he is very proud of his managers at both stores. Until he found people he knew he could trust it was a challenge to let go of control. Nick is the son of a heart surgeon and a retired nurse, and says his parent’s example of dedication and hard work influenced who he is as a person. Growing up around a someone who saves lives with his hands every day could have been intimidating but Nick says his Dad is his best friend and has always been supportive of his decisions. He believed in him, giving the freedom he needed to find his path, never pressuring him to go into medicine, which Nick says would not have fit his personality at all. With youth and intelligence on his side, it will be interesting to see where life takes Nick. He has hopes of getting married and having children but says that it depends on where God puts him. He plans to open a third Tropical Smoothie Cafe in the area very soon. Because of his tendency to work all the time, he recently purchased a Jet Ski to help him let loose and enjoy the good things in life, realizing that having fun is equally as important as work. Looking down the road, he says he will own many other businesses. With a twinkle in his eyes he says, “If I had the money I would open fifty businesses!” Who knows, maybe one day he will be one of the millionaires at Del Mar giving advice to the next talented young person with big dreams and lots of energy.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe serves delicious Bistro Sandwiches, Toasted Wraps, Gourmet Salads, unique Flatbreads, Fish Tacos, and of course their selection of over 40 different types of fresh fruit smoothies, dessert smoothies, and super fruit. Everything is made to order with fresh produce prepped daily and and all premiummeats and cheeses. There motto is “Eat Better, Feel Better.”

MOVIE REVIEW Man of Steel by Darren Rosenbaum

Photos courtesy of Warner Bros Studios Summer is a wonderful time of year, especially when it comes to the movies. Starting in May, Hollywood studios release a blockbuster every week or two and for those who love the spectacle of a big summer release, few were more anticipated than Zach Snyder’s reboot of the Superman story called ‘Man of Steel’. While there has been some criticism of Snyder for casting British actor Henry Cavill in the lead role, I found little to criticize as he played the role with just the right amount of strength and emotion, along with a fair bit of charm. ‘Man of Steel’ starts amidst the impending destruction of Krypton, with a failed military coup and flight to safety of an infant boy and our future hero. Now, I’m not the ‘fan boy’ who knows the Superman story inside and out, but give Snyder credit for his detailed take on the doomed planet. All the scenes featuring Krypton, from the hauntingly beautiful landscape to the child-making ‘factory’ to the metallic, floating computers, were quite exciting. In fact, the computer generated graphics were topnotch from start to finish. But be sure to listen early on to Russell Crowe, who plays Superman’s father, Jar-el. He summarizes how Kryptonians chose to ignore certain long-term environmental problems for short-term energy gains and set in motion the destruction of their planet. What’s plainly obvious is that you can’t fool with Mother Nature, even if your home planet is thousands of light years from Earth. As Krypton nears its end, coup leader General Zod, played with enjoyable menace by Michael Shannon, is incarcerated off-planet with his accomplices for their crimes. As we all know, they return to confront our troubled superhero in a showdown on Earth. Because all blockbusters are now intended for the global marketplace, the story of Clark Kent has evolved and is not nearly as American ‘centric’ as it was in the 1940’s. Under Snyder’s direction, ‘truth, justice and the American way’ has been sidelined, and I think that’s OK. However, anyone who sees the movie will note how carefully certain values, call them human or American if you want, are instilled in the young Clark Kent as he grows up in the heartland. In fact, Snyder’s use of flashbacks are among the best scenes of the movie, especially when they include Superman’s human father, played convincingly by Kevin Costner. Theirs seems a truly special bond, with ‘Pa’ Kent offering young Clark a human compass for guidance as he grows into adulthood. If fact, much of the story has to do with the struggle Clark Kent has with being the product of two worlds. Its how he develops along the way that I’m sure viewers will find as captivating as I did.

If there was one thing traditionalists might find fault with, it might be a perceived lack of chemistry between Lois Lane, played by the always charismatic Amy Adams, and Superman. However, in more than a few scenes, Snyder’s Lois Lane lets the world know that she is a tough, modern reporter and not a stereotypical female from the 1940’s or 50’s. All in all, I see it as a positive change that actually enhanced the movie. When the characters do finally kiss, it’s somewhat unexpected. Regardless, there’s enough of a giveaway at the end to guarantee that things will be a bit steamier between the two when the sequel arrives in a few summers. From start to finish my wife and I along with our 4 kids were mesmerized by the visual spectacle before us. So take your family to the local theater and catch a matinee. But don’t miss the opportunity to see this larger than life movie on the big screen. It’s worth it! 3.5/4

Great Beach Reads Recommendations By Amy Ackerman Librarian At SJPL

Anne Morrow Lindberg GIFT FROM THE SEA -

I always know summer is here when I get the urge to reread this book. Originally published the year my mother was born, this collection of thoughts and observations is still relevant and timely. What started as a cathartic journaling exercise for Lindberg became, dare I say, a voice for the collective unconscious for women everywhere. Written while on vacation on the beach, Lindberg starts each chapter with a shell she found and mediates on what the shell represents to her. For example, the chapter on the channeled whelk deals with the concept of home and the baggage, both physical and mental, that we carry with us. She equates the oyster shell to the middle years of marriage, likening the struggle of the shell to remain fixed to the rock as to how couples struggle to create their life together and determine their place in the world. This is a quiet and meditative book to be digested one chapter at a time, and one of those books I personally read once a year to get grounded.

Blaize Clements CAT SITTER’S CRADLE

A patron recommended this mystery author to me several months ago, and I ate the series whole in about two weeks. The main character, Dixie Hemingway, is a woman with a sad past. Now she lives on Siesta Key on the west coast of Florida , and all she wants to do is maintain her pet sitting business and keep the animals happy. As these sorts of stories go, she’s hampered in her quest for inner peace by stumbling upon all these dead bodies. And since she’s a former sheriff ’s deputy, OF COURSE she has to get involved and help find the murderer. Over the course of the series there’s a smidge of romance (does she end up with the lawyer or the detective?), frequently hilarious interactions with animals, surprisingly profound observations on humanity, fantastic descriptions of life in Florida, and

many more dead bodies. I’m mentioning this series because the next book, “The cat sitter’s cradle,” comes out in July. Put yourself on the waiting list now, and then go find the first book, “Curiosity killed the cat sitter,” while you’re waiting.

Mary Kay Andrews LADIES NIGHT

This latest title from Andrews is another crowd pleaser, sure to be a perfect title to bring to the beach. The protagonist, Grace Stanton, discovers her husband has been cheating on her and reacts in a manner that would have benefited from some forethought (she drives his car into a pool). She loses the husband (not a bad thing), but she also loses the house, the money, and her popular blog. She ends up moving in with her mom and is forced to attend weekly therapy sessions, as ordered by the court. With the surprising friends she meets in therapy, she learns something about herself and finds her way to a new life that turns out better and more rich than the one she left behind.

Eugenia Price MARGARET’S STORY

We just finished reading this title at my Florida book clubWhile there were mixed reviews amongst the group, it’s worth a spotlight. I frequently get questions at the reference desk about local history. While Fruit Cove/St. Johns/ Switzerland is rich in history, there haven’t been a lot of books written on the area. “Margaret’s Story” is part of Prices’ Florida historical fiction trilogy, and centers around the life of Margaret Seton Fleming, of Fleming Island fame. Set during the 1800s, we see the effect of the Seminole uprising, the Civil War, and reconstruction on Fleming Island and parts of NW St Johns and Jacksonville . There’s many familiar places named throughout the book and it’s a great introduction to what life used to be like in our corner of the world.

Summer is here. Kids are out of school and many of you are eagerly planning your summer get-a-ways. We all love a good family vacation but sometimes getting there can be a real pain in the neck! This month I want to give you the same advice I give my patients on how to have a pain free vacation.

What are some tips to avoid neck and back pain while traveling? 1. Plan ahead to reduce last minute stress. Pack a day or two before you leave. If you are traveling by car, load the car in advance or if you are flying, check in online before you leave for the airport and allow yourself extra time to reduce any unnecessary anxiety. 2. Pack only what you really need. The lighter your suitcase the better, especially if you are putting it in the overhead compartment. If you are like me and traveling with little ones, pack most of their stuff in a suitcase to check to your final destination. 3. Bring a small pillow to use behind your back or neck for extra support. 4. Make sure you remain well hydrated during your travels. Dehydration can lead to pain and muscle soreness, so make sure you drink lots of water and avoid coffee, tea and soda. 5. Remember to move around. If you are driving or flying make sure you get up at least once an hour to stretch and get the blood flowing. This will help prevent stiffness and soreness. 6. When you are lifting your bags or your kids, remember to keep your feet flat on the floor and use your legs more than your back.

Finally, have a great time on your vacation and relax! Please feel free to call my office at 904-547-2435 or email at DrMelindaTolitsky@ att.net if you have more questions or would like some additional information. The answers here reflect results that I have experienced in my practice, but everyone responds differently. If you have any specific questions you would like addressed in the next forum, please email me at Drmelindatolitsky@att.net.

A Message from the Vet

BLOAT

The Deep-chested Dog’s Curse by Dr. Peter Veling, DVM of Palencia Pet Clinic

Monday mornings frequently are the busiest time of the week, in general, because pets will be brought in after waiting and avoiding the emergency clinics and their higher fees. Not too long ago we came in on a Monday morning and found the case summary for a Great Dane, Luke, who went to the emergency clinic because he was vomiting and had a swollen abdomen. The record was quite extensive. Luke had been found by his wonderful owners trying to vomit in the kitchen but nothing was coming out. This is one of the signs (symptoms) of a life-threatening condition called bloat. (The technical name for this disease is Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV). He also had an enlarged abdomen that was almost twice its normal size. It does not take an Einstein veterinarian to tell what is going on. Luke’s x-rays showed that the stomach was dilated with gas and food. The x-rays also showed that the stomach was rolled over with the bottom part of the stomach now where the top should be. When the stomach is dilated and flips it shuts off the blood flow from the abdomen back to the heart, producing shock (poor circulation). Luke needed surgery to get his stomach repositioned and tacked down. Luke was lucky. The surgery was a success. When the stomach was repositioned his blood began to flow normally again. Warm, Compassionate, Affordable Care That, unfortunately, was not the last time that Luke bloated. Luke had two more episodes before University of Florida and I figured out why he was having this problem. After the second GDV we put Luke onto a Prescription Diet to see if he was allergic to his food. I had a choice of Venison and Potato or Duck and Potato to use. I chose Duck and Potato. Within a month, Luke bloated again. He went to U. of F. where they put him onto Venison and Potato. I 159 Palencia Village Drive had a 50:50 chance and chose the wrong diet. To this day he has Suite 101 never had another episode of bloat. Luke was allergic to his regular (next to Starbucks at Palencia) food and to the Duck and Potato I suggested. Luke was lucky three times. He was also lucky that his owners could afford to have this work done. Must Bring GDV is a life-threatening dangerous disease. It can afThis Ad fect any deep-chested dog. This includes Dobermans, Labradors, INITIAL EXAM Golden Retrievers, Greyhounds, Afghan Hounds, any of the larger (a $50 value) Setters and many more breeds. I have even seen it in a Dachshund. poster children for GDV. The bottom line for any dog that is vomiting is that if the owner is not looking for this disease the dog can die within hours. It is my hope that all vomiting dogs see a veterinarian if vomiting occurs more than a few times. Vomiting dogs definitely need to be seen if trying to vomit, nothing is coming out and the abdomen is enlarged.

Binaural Hearing By Dr. Rosann Faull

Our senses keep us in touch with family, friends and community. Hearing is one of these senses. Binaural hearing is the process of hearing with two ears. Binaural hearing has been and continues to be studied, currently by neurobiologists. Research has proven that binaural hearing enables us to understand relevant sounds and speech around us. Binaural hearing is necessary for speech detection and understanding and sound localization. We use both of our ears to detect soft sounds in noisy settings, like a quiet conversation in a crowded restaurant. Also, we use both ears when we reliably determine the direction of a sound source. Our ability to understand speech is improved when both ears are able to listen together. This is true in a quiet setting, try listening to the TV with one ear covered and then with both ears. Not only is speech clearer with both ears, it does not have to be as loud when we listen with both ears. The most difficult listening environment involves hearing and understanding speech in a noisy place. Everyone struggles to understand when there is background noise. Binaural hearing improves our speech recognition ability in the presence of background noise.

Without 2 ears, with equal hearing, we cannot determine where a sound is. Input from both ears allows our hearing and auditory system to use timing and loudness to determine if the sound is in front, behind, right or left of us. We were born with an ear on both sides of our head for many good reasons. As a Doctor of Audiology these reasons are clear to me and I use this knowledge when evaluating hearing and making recommendations for help when I diagnose a hearing loss. Hearing aids are often the only help that is available when a hearing loss is correctly diagnosed. If medicine or surgery cannot correct a hearing loss then hearing aids are recommended. Hearing aids, one for each ear, not one hearing aid. I do not understand why someone would think one hearing aid would help both ears. It cannot. When both ears are impaired, each ear needs help with a hearing aid. A hearing aid for both ears restores binaural hearing. If you are concerned about your hearing, get a complete diagnostic hearing test from a Doctor of Audiology. If both ears are determined to need help, 2 hearing aids will improve your speech understanding in quiet and especially in noise and help you localize sounds.
