HONORING OUR WOUNDED WARRIORS BY DARREN ROSENBAUM On November 11th, citizens around the country will pay homage to our war veteran’s. As most Americans know, Veteran’s Day is a national holiday. However, few know that Veteran’s Day began as Armistice Day nearly a century ago. It was created in 1919 to celebrate the end of the First World War, the ‘Great War’ as it was called then or, as so many confidently predicted, ‘the war to end all wars’. Sadly, human nature is far from scripted and our nation has continued to send soldiers into harm’s way. Regardless of one’s personal feelings on the war in Iraq and the continuing effort in Afghanistan, know that the American soldier is in the ‘line of fire’ because of decisions and policies made by elected civilian leaders. Soldiers do not make policy and they aren’t the decision makers. They’re just ordinary people who face extraordinary situations. These extraordinary situations are like nothing the American military has experienced before. As we

all know now, there are a great number of current and former service members suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. Once referred to as ‘shell-shock’, ‘combat stress’ or ‘battle fatigue’, PTSD was often attributed to cowardice, a ‘lack of moral fiber’ or ignored altogether. A modern understanding of the effects of PTSD did not begin until the 1970’s, when as many as 30% of soldiers returning from Vietnam showed signs of the affliction. Compounding the challenges facing us today are the tremendous advances made in battlefield medicine, which has developed to such a point that if a severely wounded soldier receives medical care, survival rate for

injuries such as Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI, and loss of limbs approach, and even exceed, a 90% survival rate! With so many soldiers returning to America, with or without visible physical injuries, their short and long-term needs have become apparent. As it stands now, the Veterans Administration has found itself unable to fully cope with the situation, even with a massive re-organization in 2009. Thankfully, organizations exist that help our returning service men and women cope with the stress of civilian life. I recently had the privilege of meeting Andrew Coughlan of the Wounded Warrior Project, a national non-profit organization headquartered off Belfort Road in Jacksonville. Started in 2003, the Wounded Warrior Project, or WWP, has helped a great many service members reintegrate into society. WWP is dedicated to the following: Raising the public’s awareness and enlisting the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members; to help injured service members aid and assist each other; to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members. One of the first things that I found unique about the WWP was Coughlan’s job title, which is Alumni Manager, and the use of the term ‘warrior’, instead of veteran, to describe ‘alumni’. He explained that when the WWP started in 2003, the word alumni was used because of the shared experience of being in combat in Iraq or Afghanistan. His department currently maintains contact with over 2500 alumni from Central Florida to the Panhandle. As he described the work the WWP does, which focuses on socializing along with 19 programs that run the gambit from combat stress recovery to family support to education and job training, warrior was used over and over again. As our conversation continued, I too began referring to alumni as warriors. Like many of the staff, Coughlan served in Iraq. As a 19 year old infantryman in the 10th Mountain Division, Coughlan spent his tour in the ‘Triangle of

Death’, as part of a combat battalion that often patrolled Fallujah by Humvee. While his Humvee was hit by IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices) on multiple occasions, he remained uninjured. Even a brazen daylight mortar attack on his base in July 2004, which killed friends and fellow warriors Sgt. Dale Lloyd and Pfc. Charles Persing, left him physically uninjured but psychologically damaged. Coughlan left active duty in early 2006 and

moved to Michigan, which is where he began to suffer from PTSD. He held a number of jobs, but flashbacks and suicidal thoughts hobbled his return and his recent marriage. He enrolled in community college but said he was ‘just there,… a body in the classroom’. Things were so bad that in early 2007, he admitted himself into a VA mental health center, suffering from survivors’ guilt and depression. As Coughlan explained it, he was ‘completely numb to the world.’ After diagnosis, he was moved to a PTSD ward where he would remain for a time.

In 2009, Coughlan received a call from the WWP that changed his life.

Within the year he moved to Jacksonville to enter into the TRACK™ program, a one year, all-expense paid educational program affiliated with Florida State College

He was hired on in March, 2010 and has since advanced within the organization.

Coughlan is now committed to serving his fellow warriors, and his fu-

10th anniversary. But the WWP operates solely through donations and does not receive government support at all. While they have received generous funding from corporate sponsors like Under Armour, U-Haul and Raytheon, donations from the general public figure heavily into every budget decision. So if you find yourself wondering where this year’s charitable donation should go, think of the WWP. As I left, Coughlan reiterated the Wounded Warrior Project mission statement: ‘A Decade of Service, A Lifetime of Commitment’. With estimates of 400,000 warriors who served in Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from PTSD, their work has hardly begun.

SACSPA

St. Augustine Community

School for the Performing

Arts

by Angie Bell

Annette Danielson is a true treasure for the St. Augustine community. She is the director of SACSPA – St. Augustine Community School for the Performing Arts, located just across from the entrance to The Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. Their mission is “to find and nurture the spirit of creativity and talent that lies within every person.” As a mother of eight, she has a special love for children. Homeschooling her children ended when she had an accident with a horse in December of 1998. She had to relearn everything. All the training she had received all the way through grad school was gone. But relearn she did, and now she uses that training and love for music to give back to the community. After two years of rehabilitation she was released from care by her neurologist, yet she still could not drive a car, walk many places on her own, and do other daily tasks. She kept up her own recuperation program, including water aerobics with music. In 2005 she moved to St. Augustine. SACSPA was established in 2006 to provide a quality arts education to people of all ages in the St. Augustine area who might otherwise never be exposed to the arts. The organization currently serves over 200 students via classes and private lessons at four St. Augustine venues: Coquina Crossing, the Boys and Girls Clubs, The Montessori School and at their studio. For the Boys and Girls Clubs they provide a free weekly piano class using the Suzuki Method of instruction. This method fosters a belief that a positive environment can promote character in students. A positive environment is what one will find when they step through the door of SACSPA. One of SACSPA’s big sponsors is Grandpa’s Music on Anastasia Island. They have repaired and donated and numerous guitars and have, through Pat Murphy, given free guitar lessons at the Boys and Girls Clubs. Last year the children, under Annette’s direction, also sang at the annual Veteran’s Memorial Show at Anastasia Baptist Church. This past summer SACSPA held Summer Camps for elementary and middle school stu-

dents, with scholarships provided by the Elks Club. SACSPA is always in need of instrument donations and sponsors for gifted students who need financial help. “Annette is a wonderful person to work with!” says Dennis Glavin, director of development at Kids Bridge. They have an upcoming fundraiser with Kids Bridge on January 18. The Dancing Stars Gala will be held at The River House in St. Augustine.

BOUNTIFUL BENEVOLENCE Non-Profit Organizations Abound. We take a look at a few great ones making a difference in our community.

by Angie Bell It is the season of giving and local non-profits epitomize this spirit. St. Johns Magazine is taking a look at some important local non-profit organization that make a difference in unique ways.... and how they have impacted people’s lives.

Kids Bridge

Kids Bridge provides a safe, neutral, supervised home-like setting for the maintenance of family relationships during times of separation due to issues such as divorce, domestic violence, and abuse allegations. Prior to its existence, children and families in crisis lacked a safe place to participate in courtordered supervised visits. Often, children caught in the middle of hostile custody conflicts were forced to be exchanged in fast food restaurants or school parking lots, which often led to arguments or altercations. Kids Bridge is the answer. Located at 238 San Marco Ave. in St. Augustine, the hours of operation are: Tuesday 9-5, Wednesday - Friday 9-7, Saturday 9-1 and Sunday 1-6. Dennis T. Glavin is the new Director of Development. He has lived in northeast Florida for 30 years and has worked pro bono with Kids Bridge for almost ten years. He is excited to be teaming up with SACSPA for the Dancing Stars of St. Johns County fundraising event in January.

Boys and Girls Club in St. Augustine THEPLAYERS ChampionshipUnit

The mission of the Boys and Girls Club is to inspire and enable young people, especially the disadvantaged in our community, to realize their full potential. The club provides affordable programs along with caring mentors, serving youth ages 5-18 with after school and summer camp programs. They also provide field trips and help provide school supplies. Programs are offered in five core areas: education and career development, health and life skills, the arts, sports, fitness and recreations, and character and leadership development. On a typical afternoon after school, kids will have free time, dedicated homework time, and then a choice of activities. Items currently needed for children: games such as Scrabble, Monopoly, Jenga; art supplies; appropriate kids’ magazines; stuffed animals, sticker books, and gift cards, such as Target, fast food, mall, etc.; age appropriate DVDs (G and PG only) Christmas decorations, eight 8-ft. lightweight rectangular tables . Items needed for the Club: bar stools, projector screen, karaoke machine, iPads, Kindles or Nooks, and garden supplies. Donations stay local and are used for daily needs. The club is also looking for coaches and tutors.

Pie in the Sky

Pie in the Sky is a country store and a whole lot more, located in the rural farming town of Hastings, Florida. Their mission is to connect people with resources and facilitate long term solution that affect the lives of the elderly, poor, and underserved in our community. Pie in the Sky is an effort to help farm workers and the community of Hastings through something simple - pie. All profits from the sales of their various types of pie go straight back to the community in the form of little things that make a big difference. They also organize food distribution from items donated by local businesses. Recently, Pie in the Sky has formed a partnership with Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) at Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL. This partnership will help expand their efforts in Hastings by opening up new opportunities. These students have helped in so many ways, from building a wheelchair ramp and planting flowers to designing a new brochure and making a new website.

trade. This nonprofit is working to break the cycle of the sex trade in our community by investing in the freedom of their employees. Training is funded for women to go through a three-month training to receive job and life kills, such as sewing, nutrition, budgeting, and computer literacy. They now have a booth at the Riverside Arts Market every Saturday, featuring their upcycled line made by the employees in Jacksonville. Here they will sell market bags and fall clothing for kids. Their children’s clothing line is now also featured in Natural Life’s retail store in the Avenues Mall, giving their products and stories an even wider audience in Jacksonville. Here you can find “Joy” Skirts, “Hope” Play Pants, “Dream” Ditty Bags, and “Freedom” Play Pants. In addition there is still an Open Warehouse every Wednesday from 1-5pm at the Barnet Street location.

Second Harvest North Florida Artbreakers Second Harvest North Florida provides resources to more than 400 member agencies in a 17-county area. They keep up a fleet of 13 vehicles that provide pickup and delivery services for perishable and nonperishable items. Their distribution center in St Augustine has moved to a new facility, doubling its space and considerably increasing its productivity. The new facility is located at 3525 Agricultural Center Drive. The pantry is open M-F from 7:30am – noon. The new St Augustine facility relies on the work of devoted volunteers to operate. Volunteers ranging in age from high-schoolers to adults may sign up online. Food items most requested by agencies’ clients are meat, beans, rice and peanut butter. The next big event for Second Harvest is the 26th Annual Empty Bowls Luncheon to be held November 19th at the Prime Osborne Center in Jacksonville. The event begins at 12 noon. Individual tickets are $30 and can be purchased online or at the door.

Artbreakers was founded in 2006 by two cancer survivors who saw the need to help those who were facing one of the most emotionally and financially difficult times of their lives. Their mission is to make sure that every cancer patient has what they need to get through cancer. They work with local artists to serve cancer patients in and around St. Johns County, FL. Artist Representative Pier Fitts was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. The artists in the community that she worked with pitched in to help her. It was then that Pier decided she wanted to do something to give back to the community that gave so much to her. Gayle Jones, who began her battle with cancer in 2004, met Pier and together they later posed for a series of cancer portraits by Hugh Holburn. Then, Gayle and Pier pooled their business sense and creative backgrounds and founded Artbreakers. Sometimes the help is financial; other times they help patients find their way through the system to find the right agency or doctor to get the care they need. They even coordinate volunteers to drive patients to the grocery store or to appointments. If you find yourself in need of financial help, transportation assistance or information from those who have been in your shoes, contact Artbreakers.

GIVE THANKS To the Givers

The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach

This 8,000 square-foot facility is the largest cultural arts facility in St. Johns County. Their mission is to bring the arts into the life of our communities through arts education, art appreciation and community outreach. The center features local and regional artists and provides studio facilities for art, dance, music, and voice instruction. They are able to provide free arts education and outreach programs to seniors and children with special needs. One of these programs is C.A.R.E. at Cunningham Creek elementary. This program provides music therapy for special needs students. They have several upcoming fundraisers and events. The Holiday Shoppes will be held November 14-17. This event includes workshops, classes and boutiques. On January 10 they will showcase Celebrate Art, the 7th Annual Juried Artist Member Exhibition. They also host the Legacy Trust Home and Art Tour in March and participated with Farm to Table in April. The center can always use volunteers, whether they are individuals, groups, or interns. High school students can also earn community service hours while working in a fun, creative environment.

The Council on Aging

Since 1973, the Council on Aging (COA) has served as the first step to information and opportunity for the St. Augustine and St. Johns County elder communities. There are subsidized senior programs and senior services for those 60 and over. But you’ll also find many activities that are open to any one of any age. There are more than 4,000 residents of St. Johns County dealing with the challenges of memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or the effects of various forms of brain trauma. The Sunshine Therapeutic Adult Day Health Center is the only licensed adult day center in St. Johns County. Licensed nurses and specially trained staff are also available to assist with activities of daily living and personal care. A nutritious lunch and snacks are served every day and the regular schedule of exercises and daily activities are planned and supervised by a staff of trained professionals. The Sunshine Center is located in the Coastal Community Center, 180 Marine St. Open Monday through Friday from 7:30 am

until 5:30 pm. For the past 25 years, the COA has provided hot, nutritious meals to the homebound elderly in the St. Augustine / St. Johns County community via Meal on Wheels. In addition to a daily meal, this program affords those with limited mobility an opportunity for some much-needed social contact. A licensed dietitian closely monitors all menus. The cost of each meal is $7.00. For those who are unable to pay, meals are provided under the Older Americans Act. Volunteers are needed for Meals on Wheels as well as in many other areas. There are numerous other services that can be found on their website.

Davidson Cares

Davidson Cares is the corporate giving program of Davidson Realty and the Davidson Companies. Davidson Cares is focused on supporting the local schools in World Golf Village and nearby communities, including Wards Creek Elementary School, Mill Creek Elementary School, Palencia Elementary School, and Pacetti Bay Middle School. It is funded by Davidson Realty based on proceeds from real estate sales so that local home sales support local schools, as well as by fundraisers. Their Second Annual Davidson Cares Fundraiser happens on November 8 at Mile Marker Brewing. There will be raffle items, great food and superb brew.

The St. Augustine Humane Society

The St. Augustine Humane Society encourages responsible pet ownership and works to reduce the surrender rate of pets to shelters through assistance services and through effective, affordable spay and neuter efforts. Some of the other services they provide are a charity clinic for preventative care, feral cat support, dog training, grooming salon, pet food bank, re-homing assistance, and adoption services. The Pet Food Bank is for those who have a limited income and they must apply to qualify. The need in the community is great, so the Humane Society is always accepting donations of unopened pet food and supplies. Recently, Amber Parker had a Birthday Party & Pet Food Drive. Instead of presents, her guests brought pet food, which she generously donated to the Pet Food Bank to help others. One way you can support the Humana Society is by purchasing the 2014 Pin Up Paws calendar. This year’s pets are featured as famous film characters. The cover girls are Scooby and Daisy dressed as “Thelma and Louise”.

Wounded Warrior Project

This is a Jacksonville based organization that began in 2003 with a backpack program. Backpacks are filled with important care and comfort items such as clothing, toiletries, playing cards, and more - all intended to make a hospital stay more comfortable. Wounded service members receive backpacks as they arrive at military trauma units across the United States. Injured warriors overseas who are evacuated from field hospitals to larger military treatment facilities stateside or abroad receive a smaller version of the WWP backpack, known as Transitional Care Packs (TCPs), for immediate comfort. They now have 18 programs, including family support, training and work transition, and health and wellness programs. You can help by joining the Proud Supporter Community, volunteering including administrative assistance, special event support, or serving as a mission ambassador. You can also check their website for the next 8K Run or Tough Mudder event.

Emile’s Pack of Hope

The organization provides foster children with backpacks filled with personal items that they keep while on their journey. They also educate people about issues that face foster children. You can help by buying a back pack and filling it yourself, or purchase a few items and the organization will fill the rest, or get a group together to help on a larger scale. Their website lists needed items and is also where you can go to donate financially. In the spirit of Thanksgiving for all that you have been blessed with, take some time to give to one or more of these organizations. You will be glad you did.

Sit at any table inside and the view is dynamic to say the least, or enjoy the recently rebuilt and expanded deck where you not only look out at The Ocean, you listen to it too as the waves break and the birds cry. To complement this vista Chef Bob Henle has created a menu primarily of fish and seafood balanced with beef, poultry pasta and creative specials, always fresh and sourced locally whenever possible. The Reef will have their award winning Brunch Buffet on Thanksgiving, serving traditional fare as well as Reef classics such as Prime Rib and Crab Legs. Don’t deal with mess of cooking at home...let us do the cooking! Hours will be 11-5. Closed for dinner. Please make reservations by calling 904-824-8008. We look forward to serving you!

Empower Kids with Effective Coping Skills

by Grand Master James Pierce of United Marial Arts

It happens everywhere from small town U.S.A. to the largest of our cities. It has been happening for years and of late it has turned just short of an epidemic. In my profession, as a martial artist, I have heard every response imaginable from “My child attends an “A” school and I never thought something like that would happen there.”To “I’ve given my child permission to return fire for fire.” Regardless of the situation the child attacked has been victimized by someone trying to impose their will against the other person. Whether the situation was for fame on Youtube or just for fun. The attacked child still deals with the shame and embarrassment of being bullied; Understanding that if our child retaliates, they also may also be suspended from school as well. As parents, that is the last thing we want our child to go through or to suffer. How do we teach our child what to do? First and foremost we want them to report the incident immediately to those in authority and then immediately to us when they return home. We hope and believe that by reporting the incident it will be resolved. There are things that we can teach our children to do when they are in a situation of being bullied. 1. Ignore the situation and go the other way, reporting the situation. 2. For older students who hear about bullies at the school, being aware and trying to avoid them in the areas that they may frequent. 3. Training our children to have confidence, self control, and a strong character to verbally ward off the bully instead of making it physically confrontational. In my past 32 years as a martial artist, the best way to protect our children against bullies is to prepare them both physically and mentally. From a little boy in preschool to a young female in the Air Force, I have seen proof that what I have taught these students has worked and has worked effectively without physical confrontation. I believe the old saying that I was taught years to go, It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken adults.

Building Global Friendship

For the “Good” of the Game by Nicholas Brockwell

Each year more and more children are participating in their local soccer programs. The game of soccer is growing in the United States and it shows no sign of slowing down. As the excitement builds we must always be looking for new and innovative ways to promote and support this growth as perhaps the largest school through sport locally, regionally and globally when it comes to childhood development, and the development of young men and women. That is exactly what is happening in North Florida through The “Soccer for Good” Private Foundation. The “Soccer For Good” Private Foundation, a soccer foundation in Jacksonville, Florida, develops programs to further education, positive role modeling, and the development of strong morals and values. We aim to make a difference in the lives of people around the world. The game of Soccer is a powerful tool. It has united countries and even stopped wars! The mission and vision for The “Soccer for Good” Private Foundation is clear, “Our mission is to encourage children and young adults to develop socially, psychologically, physically, and spiritually through the game of soccer.” The “Soccer For Good” Private Foundation is an organization that differenti-

18

ates itself, both educationally and philanthropically, by unifying and consensus-building both locally and globally. Our founders bring years of experience as leaders, educators, businessmen and community difference makers. They are proof and understand, there is no larger playing field or better way of doing that than by making a difference through the most popular game in the world — soccer. Each community and individual story that comes as a result of our work is what keeps our contributors involved and dedicated to our cause. Currently The “Soccer For Good” Private Foundation is working on several initiatives including, the development of programs in low-income areas, providing support to current soccer programs, and developing educational resources for our youth. If you would like to learn more about The “Soccer For Good” Private Foundation, please e-mail Gary McKinley at gmckinley@mckinleyandassociates.com, or call 904-379-9193.

Audiology Corner with Dr. Faull Rosann W. Faull, Au.D. CCC-A Board Certified Doctor of Audiology Your Community Resource for Better Hearing www.drfaull.com/ 904-262-5550 Fall has arrived with cooler temperatures, shorter daylight hours and a reminder that the Holidays are quickly approaching. I think my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. Family and friends join together and enjoy a wonderful meal, good times and conversation. It is a great excuse to stop, think, reflect and give thanks. I am thankful that I have chosen audiology as my profession. Audiology enables me to help people, and keep-up with technology. Audiology requires a college education. A Master’s Degree was required in 1977, when I joined the field. Technology progressed and audiologist’s responsibilities expanded to include newborn hearing testing, cochlear implant mapping, programming digital hearing aids, and more advanced diagnostic testing. I enrolled in post-graduate college courses and in 2004 obtained my professional doctorate, Au.D: Doctor of Audiology. I maintain my education and am Board Certified by the American Board of Audiology. Beginning in 2008, the State of Florida has required a doctoral degree to be a licensed audiologist. The State of Florida also licenses hearing aid dealers. This license requires a licensed hearing aid specialist sponsor, at least a six month training program, often a home study or correspondence course, have a high school diploma or equivalent and pass the International Licensing Examination. The main focus of my practice is helping people hear better through advanced hearing aids. I believe my extensive education enables me to better diagnosis hearing loss, prescribe, program and fit hearing aids. The Holidays are coming. Enjoy good food and conversation with friends and family. Don’t be left out because you cannot hear the conversation. If you or someone in your family suspects that you are not hearing well, get your hearing evaluated. There are a lot of ways to improve your hearing. Learn your options from a qualified professional.

Pet Page with Dr. Veling, DVM

Sophie’s Arthritis Battle

Warm, Compassionate, Affordable Care

A Message from The Vet Dr. Veling, DVM Palencia Pet Clinic It has been about 8 months ago that a wonderful nine year old yellow Labrador, named Sophie, came in because she was having trouble getting around. She was already on anti-inflammatory medication but was still having trouble. Sophie’s owner was concerned that she was in too much pain in spite of the anti-inflammatory med she was already on. Sophie came in moving just fine because she was thinking about the Lean Treats that we give to our food-motivated patients. She was definitely glad to see us. It was her rear legs that were the problem. This is very common. Quite frankly, veterinarians, as a profession, do a lousy job with finding the cause of rear limb problems early enough to make a true difference. Then we serve pet owners who love their pets to excess. What do I mean? Veterinarians can check hips by two methods of x-raying, OFA and PennHIP. Both require anesthesia. OFA, the traditional position of x-raying a dog for hip dysplasia, is to put them flat on their backs. The legs are held straight out long-ways. OFA misses 42% of hip dysplasia. It is the most common position. PennHIP puts the dog on its back for an OFA view and then two more views. In those other views the legs are flexed and pushed into the hip joint and then pushed out of the hip joint as far as they will comfortably go. PennHIP has a database of x-rays that are used for comparison using a mathematical formula. It finds loose hips, if present, every time. Why don’t all veterinarians use PennHIP? It costs an extra $900 to take the course. Then 5 perfect sets of x-rays have to be submitted before a veterinarian can be certified. Most veterinarians won’t spend the money for this difficult to pass course. With PennHIP I can find Hip Dysplasia as early as 16 weeks old. Then I can do a surgery that prevents HD from developing. That surgery is 1/10th the cost of the surgeries done by specialists. Sophie has Hip Dysplasia. No x-rays were needed to tell me that. Sophie was very lucky to have very caring owners. I offered to train them to give Sophie injections of Adequan. It is injected under the skin then absorbed into the joints forming a chemical cap on inflamed cartilage. Adequan is not cheap but, for Sophie, it was a life-saver. Within two weeks of once a week injections she felt like playing and running again. Here owners don’t mind doing the injections. The tiny needles don’t bother Sophie. Why is Adequan a life-saving drug? Without it, Sophie might not be with us anymore. A 2005 Purina study showed that 82% of big dogs end up being put to sleep because they can’t get up any more. The most common reason is a combination of hip dysplasia and obesity. PennHIP x-rays for young puppies and breeding pets and keeping all dogs slender can stop the losses. Then we might not need Adequan.
