“I Am Alway’s With You” By Debbie Dillard
The most central promise in the Bible is not "I will forgive you." The most frequent promise is "I will be with you." Before Adam and Eve ever sinned or needed forgiveness, they were promised God's presence. The promise came to Enoch, who"walked with God". It was also made to Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Mary, and Paul and the lists goes on. It is the reason for courage. "Have no fear, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." My friends, God is right beside you. Draw near to spirit in him! Shut out the distractions of the world. He is your Life, the very breath of your soul. Learn the secret place of your being, which is his secret place too. The only block there can be in your channel is self. Keep it out, and know that God's spirit is flowing through. It is true that he waits in many of heart, but few retire into the inner place to commune with him. Wherever the soul is, there is he, Jesus Christ, our Savior! Seek safety in his secret place as you can't be touched or harm there. Yes, cling. Your faith shall be awarded. Do you know what it means to feel a child's trusting hand in yours, to know their confidence in you? Doesn't that not draw out your Love and desire to protect, to care? Think of how God feels when in our helplessness we turn to him, clinging, desiring his Love and Protection. He promises to never fail us! There is no miracle he cannot perform, or nothing he cannot do! Never doubt, or have no fear. When you have the faintest tremor of fear, stop what you are doing and rest upon God until you are joy-
ful and strong again. Fear is evil and "perfect Love casts out fear." There is no room for fear in the heart of which the Holy Spirit dwells. Fear destroys Hope. It cannot exists where Love is, or where Faith rests within. Fear is the curse of the world. Meet all your difficulties with love and laughter. Love is a busy life. It is a joy-filled life. Sun and air are God's great healing forces and that inner joy changes poisoned blood to a pure healthy life-giving flow. The glory of an open flower is beyond all your telling, the beautiful fruits of Love, Joy, Peace, in richest abundance-only Believe! The joy of Spring is near. Nature is embodied Spirit of God's thoughts of beauty for this world. We need to treat it as such! To realize this will bring both new life and-joy! This is all important, because it isn't only believing certain things about God, but sensing his presence in a flower, or message in its beauty and perfume. We need to trust God in everything life brings our way. We must trust to the end, the last hour. You must be ready like Abraham, to climb the Hill of Sacrifice, to go the very last moment, before you see God's Deliverance. The final test has to come to all who walk by Faith. We must rely on God alone! Look for no other arm; look for no other direction. The Dazzling glory of the Lord is the Beauty of his Character. It is risen upon you when you reflect that same Glory in your lives, when in Love, Patience, Worship, Purity, you reveal something of our Father, an assurance that you have been with Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

STANDING UP TO
Domestic Violence By Stephanie Frugé
Domestic violence is the cause of three women dying every day in America, and the leading cause of injury to women—more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. These are not just numbered statistics; this is the suffering and murders of real, everyday women. Domestic violence has no limits to race or class, as it occurs across the socioeconomic board. The victims are usually women who believed that they were stuck in the situation or were convinced that they deserved the abuse. I had the privilege of interviewing the Executive Director of Providence House in Shreveport, Simone Hennessee; Director of PR and Volunteer Services, Sarah Causey; and participant in the Providence House domestic abuse program, Michele Holcomb. As the interview progressed, I was somewhat surprised at the commonalities between the statistical research and testimonies of these women. There was a very different recognition between reading the statistics and meeting those involved face to face. During the interview we all agreed that the signs, symptoms, patterns, and red flags are factual information that the public desperately needs to be educated about. Domestic violence is a societal problem that can be prevented through education and proper action. Michele Holcomb, survivor of domestic abuse, made the choice in February 2012 to remove herself and her children from an abusive marriage that had lasted for 11 years. I noticed that Michele was an incredibly good listener and had an inspiring, yet calming aura about her. She was also brave enough to share some of the things her exabuser had convinced her of. “He told me things like I was ugly, that I would never be wanted by another man because I had children, and that I was stupid because I did not graduate high school.” Michele’s then gave her advice to another who may be currently

involved in an abusive relationship, “You are never stuck! There is help and long term support available, but you have to make the call.” Simone then stated, “Calling us is the first real step. Anytime you leave, it is so dangerous that being prepared to leave, having someone else to talk to, and being able to run away from that situation is imperative.” Based on reports from 10 countries, between 55 percent and 95 percent of women who had been physically abused by their
partners had never contacted non-governmental organizations, shelters, or the police for help (www.thehotline.org). This is caused by fear of the actual dangers one may endure by leaving the situation. Temporary restraining orders are available, but a piece of paper is not enough to protect the victim. Simone said, “You must have a safety plan coupled with the restraining order. This is part of what we do here at The Providence House. We provide emergency safe shelter, protective orders and legal advocacy, case management, safety plan support to carry it through, counseling for the abused and their children, childcare service, and training for
jobs and life skills. We stand apart from similar non profits because we provide housing for up to two years in order to enable people to have a fresh start in life. We are truly a community based organization.” It is difficult for someone who has not had experience with emotional or physical abuse to understand why a woman would stay in an abusive relationship, or how one could have such low self esteem to allow the abuse. Kathryn Bloomfield, Attorney at Law stated, “Those in domestic violence situations got there because they either had no self-confidence or it was eroded. Senses of self are gone; completely gone. The women being abused physically and emotionally cannot take that step... Simply informing that there is "help out there" won't do it. The help has to reach in, grab them, wrap them, hug them, and then they can get out.” When speaking with Michele, she informed me of her reasoning for staying with the abuser for so long, “I felt like I had to. I thought it was wrong to leave a marriage, but I finally realized a relationship was not supposed to be like that…after he thoughtlessly beat my 8 year old daughter, only to turn around to verbally scold and blame her for his abuse…that was my breaking point. I decided I was done. I called my father to come get us, and he picked us up in shock to learn about my situation. My ex had kept me away from my family and friends so they did not know what was going on in our home.” “Helping others realize that the abuser will not change and that they are not the cause of the abuse is the key to saving lives.” Zekita Tucker. To someone being abused, that statement could easily turn into nine hundred other thoughts and feelings that ultimately, take away the simple truth of it. Simone clearly stated, “...a lot of times people think it is going to change. It does not
change; it gets worse.” Women who are being abused emotionally tend to be confused easily and carry much guilt. Part of an abuser’s tactics is to weaken the mind and self will of the other in order to stay in control. This is why the public is so important in the elimination of domestic violence in our country. The topic is truly disheartening, but there is light at the end of this tunnel. The light is the conscious decision making process that God has entitled to each of us. The end to domestic violence begins with you and your conscious effort to stop it. Simone stated firmly, “Do not ignore the warning signs in women or the ‘drunken’ fight next door…call the hotline and report the situation.” If you would like to help The Providence House by volunteering please email Sarah@theprovidencehouse.com. If you live in the North West Louisiana region you can drop off or mail donations to 814 Cotton Street, Shreveport, LA 71101. Visit www.theprovidencehouse.com for more information on their program and how you can help. Anything that you use, have, or celebrate in your home (i.e. cleaning supplies, bed sheets, furniture, clothing, children’s toys, children and adult medicines such as Children’s Tylenol are all needed. The Providence House currently house about 65 families and as Sarah Causey stated, “We will not turn anyone down for help, even if we are at full capacity.” As a community, let’s do our part to help them stop the abuse and lead people on the road of recovery! Give your tax deductible donation, monetary gift, or volunteer service today by calling (318) 221-7887. If you or someone you know is being abused or even think may be dealing with abuse, please call the hotline at (318) 6987273 or (888) 411-1333. Your phone call is anonymous at will, and there are no stupid questions. Human life is precious and should never be undermined by abuse. Being able to count on ourselves and each other to make the right decisions is what defines our society. “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Gandhi Not sure if you're experiencing domestic abuse? Ask yourself these questions. Does my partner: • Embarrass me with bad names and putdowns? • Act very controlling? • Stop me from talking with family or friends? • Take my money? Make me ask for money or refuse to give me money? • Tell me that I am a bad parent and threaten to take the children? • Act like abuse is no big deal? • Destroy my property or threaten to hurt my pets? • Intimidate me with knives, guns, or other weapons? • Act extremely jealous of others, especially men? • Violently lose his temper, striking or breaking objects? • Physically harm me? So often in the everyday format of leadership, we take for granted the sacrifice of men and women whom lead this area in position s of Mayor. I would like to award the Rising Sun (Sons) Awards to Lo Walker and Cedric Glover. Bossier City is led by Lorenz Walker and Shreveport is led by Cedric Glover. Words can be written to describe the careers, achievements, and accolades of the professionals. It takes far more than a past to lead. It takes vision and enlightenment of adaptation to the needs of many. What makes a great leader? Time is the answer. Moments to devote to a call from a citizen, actions in Council meetings to present the possible outcomes of decisions are discounted as ‘just another day as Mayor’ – those moments create hours of revelations for present and future security. My first label for the Mayor’s of east and west of the Red (Bossier and Caddo Parishes largest cities) is Dynamic Duo. The flowered accent is Men of Integrity and then a simple name of the awards for the two: Honorable Mayor Lorenz Walker of Bossier City, Louisiana Honorable Cedric Glover of Shreveport, Louisiana The later titles are worth more than any accent! In Roman Times, there was a story of a warrior who refused to enter the gates of his property until setting of the sun. When asked by a servant, “Why must you detain and not enter your own domain?” The warrior replied, “The sun has not set on my achievements, thus I wait for the setting sun and a new day to begin again.” A most honorable tribute to both.

Top 7 Women Of The Year
Congratulations to all of our winners! The Top 7 Women of the Year Awards honor and celebrate 7 exceptional women who are proven achievers in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. This year marks our Premiere edition of the Awards. The Awards demonstrate the different ways women have harnessed their talents and opportunities to reach new heights in their careers. The impact our Top 7 Winners have on the next generation of women leaders does not begin and end with the recognition of their accomplishments. These women are impacting the lives and careers of others, men and women alike, by sharing their knowledge and offering advice and counsel. The women recognized by the Top 7 Awards are creating legacies, changing perspectives and altering the face of business. With women like them succeeding in male-dominated industries, heading large corporations and starting their own businesses, the barriers to equality don't seem insurmountable. With the acknowledgment that organizations thrive when they have women on their leadership teams, more men are joining in and supporting the growth and development of women leaders. Congratulations to all of our winners! 22 Southern Hospitality

Located at 1601 Spring St., sitting on top of the hill, Ernest's features prime steaks, fresh seafood, and Italian eats. Ernest's famous marinated crab claws and red snapper Ernest are just two dishes that highlight our menu. Tableside desserts and after dinner drinks await our guests! If it’s a night to remember, be sure to celebrate with us! TESTIMONIES: "Great Food, Fantastic Service and the best wedding cake martini in town!!"
TESTIMONIES: It starts with the ambiance - reminiscent of a Chicago-style or New York-style steakhouse. Wood paneling, hardwood floors, cool light fixtures, the leather wrapped booths and the white tablecloths. Instantly, you forget what city you're in. Then, the service attentive, polite, engaging. The wait staff genuinely seem to enjoy what they're doing and take pride in what they do. Extremely knowledgeable about the menu and wine list.
Sizzling fajitas, mouth watering enchiladas, cheesy nachos and of course our famous margaritas. We have the best Happy Hour everyday! TESTIMONIES: The place is FUN! I've been several times with friends. The bigger your dinner party the more fun and be sure you dance! Superior has been very popular here and for good reason for a long time. The food is great, particularly the queso which is real melted cheese…not the cheese whiz you get at most places, the tortilla soup and the chicken enchiladas. A Café that is as Unique as its Name
There’s something about Line Avenue and locally owned boutique bistros, cafés and restaurants. Sure there are plenty of national chain options on the Youree Drive retail strip, but when you’re looking for inimitable cuisine, unique libations, and distinctive service, it seems that Line Avenue is the Mecca for local chefs to practice and present their artistic talents. Shreveport’s coolest new entry, Twine on Line, is a tea room by day, wine bar by night and offers the latest and greatest in the ever expanding gastronomical world to professional foodies and newbies alike. Twine is located on the corner of Line and Jordan, stretching these Line avenue culinary offerings farther northward and further in adventurous tastes. As its name suggests, Twine offers an eclectic variety of tea and wine offerings, as well as food that is inspired by the earthy local flavors found throughout the area. Since its inception by Owner Rick Rose, Twine has already established itself as the new culinary landmark catering to those who want the freshest ingredients possi-

ble, prepared in a tantalizing fashion. Moving to the Shreveport area in 2008, Rick quickly realized the need to create a different dining and wining experience where customers can enjoy a quick, comforting meal or a more leisurely paced experience. When one first steps inside, you quickly realize that the restaurant exudes a laid back old-world charm and cool retro design. In the center of the space at 1513 Line Avenue is an old fashion L shaped counter quaintly wrapped with comfortable high back padded bar chairs that evoke the history and architecture of this storefront which was originally built as a pharmacy. Twine’s wine room was once, appropriately, the apothecary’s work space. Local artwork is exhibited throughout Twine’s walls and library bookshelves reflecting the beauty of a museum café. Surrounded by a quaint yet comfortable library area is the wine room, which Rick affectionately calls “the Alibi Room.” It is stylishly decorated by Smith Mason Legacies, just south on Line Avenue, to create the ideal atmosphere for
Jodie Gharbi,Twine Pastry Chef and Rick Rose, Proprietor
an intimate dinner or a divine setting for a smaller, private party. The distinctive Japanese tea room, across the way, is ideal for “tea for two” or a larger gathering of friends, offering traditional and beautifully presented Japanese tea ceremonies. Quickly popularized by the local music, arts, and literary scene, there is never a so-so evening at Twine Shreveport. On any given Sunday brunch, you may hear spontaneous gospel or opera being sung or on any evening, you may experience belly dancing as you dine on stuffed grape leaves and baklava. Of course you would expect unique teas to be front and center, and so it is at Twine as Rick’s appreciation of tea's origin, cultivation, craftsmanship and culture greatly enhance time spent at Twine. Taking international cues from cultures which consider tea as an integral and varied daily occurrence, Rick takes his tea seriously. The teas are freshly brewed daily and include tea leaves from Twinings of London, the only tea served at Buckingham Palace to the queen and her court (available by the tea bag, 2 infusions), and
also Rishi Teas (loose leaf, multiple infusions), served in one of a kind Tsuki tea pots, individually handcrafted and flown in from Japan. Of course, java is always available with coffee beans coming in from Rick’s native Midwest. Twine offers Metropolis Coffee from Chicago the memorable (Spice Island, seasonal Falstaff and Red Line Decaf brewed by request) and Eagle River Roasters Coffee from the northwoods of Wisconsin (Sunday brunch’s Sticky Bun and Southern Pecan are favorites), served by a frothy glass mug or by three cup French Press. The “Specialty Brews” include iced or hot organic Fair Trade Masal Chai (original, skim, soy, almond or coconut) and Twinings Iced Tea, offering two daily varieties which include the most popular to date Wild Berries and Lady Grey. And as the name infers, wine is given equally special attention. An array of whites, reds and sparklings rivals the food in tempting the taste buds. Wines change on a regular basis and are selected to enhance the seasonal menu offer-
ings. Hailing from Wisconsin, Rick’s German heritage assures the most flavorful and interesting brews and hops as well. No matter the season, Twine Shreveport delights the gastronomical palate and satisfies the soul. The ever-changing seasonal menu is dominated by Bohemian innovations with a dose of Californian flare. Guiding the experience are four chefs who bring their various interests and flavors to the table: executive chef, Donna Cushing, who caters for film and tv; chef de cuisine, Chef Bex, who has been pleasing the palates of diners in Northwest Louisiana since returning from her hometown after two decades overseeing kitchens in New Zealand; pastry chef, Jodie Gharbi whose flair for French treats is exemplified by her perfect creation of the Wac Mac, a modern day twist on the traditional macaron, and Chef Larry, who oversees the lunchtime menu and Soul Sunday Brunches. Larry’s Purple Pig, pulled pork smoked over pecan wood, has become a Shreveport tradition in no time.
In the summer, Twine Shreveport’s salads are evidence of the wide variety of fresh foods found in the local farmers markets. Fruits and vegetables, flowers, spices and cheese abound. In winter, Twine promises that its soups and sandwiches, while still varied, will be heartwarming and robust. Everything is hand-made in-house daily. Featured are wholesome and intensely flavored dishes that are enhanced from ingredients that are seasonal and at their peak, and which speak to Rick and his team who plan their menus for the summer and fall from the colorful offerings of Shreveport’s wonderful Farmer’s Market. Knock on the door before Twine officially opens at 11am, every day except Monday, and you will be offered a look and smell of a variety of French macarons that come in assorted flavors that can be purchased individually or as bakers dozen. “T-Bagels” are also available daily and can be ordered plain, with butter and jam, or smeared with golden honey walnut, garden fresh veggie, creamy peanut butter, blueberry or Philly cream cheese. A customer favorite is the Twine Lox, which is mixture of cream cheese, flaked salmon, tomato and onion. A tasty limit of 3 dozen bagels are made in the kitchens of Twine by Jodie every day in flavors such as NY, sweet potato, baby blueberry, crazy craisin and VT white cheddar. Among Twine Shreveport's unique offerings are dishes infused with robust wines and flavorful tea leaves. The Shortbread Tea Cookies utilize a compendium of tea flavors including chai, green, chamomile honey lemon, Earl Grey, and more. Twine’s home churned "Red Wine” ice cream tops a list of other special flavors, each infused with milk, cream, tea and wine, creating an unforgettable dessert experience, especially when paired with one of Twine’s favorite desserts: the Chocolate Bang! Bang! Cake or the White and Dark Chocolate Cheesecake Truffle, made for the table to share. At lunch, folks from all around the Shreveport Bossier area, convene once again on Mid City, as they did a half century ago, to enjoy one of the most popular offerings, the signature sandwich, called the Twinewich, which is loaded with a choice of chicken, salmon, un-pimento cheese, tuna, egg or bacon & egg salad and is served on country white, oat wheat, jalapeno corn or a T-Bagel of choice: toasted or untoasted. The ham salad, offered on special occasion, is Rick’s Bavarian Grandmother Wheeler's recipe and another house favorite. The Manwich changes based on the Twine team’s culinary inspiration for that day. Past renditions often make the permanent menu. These have included the "Purple Pig"

- pulled pork, purple poppy seed coleslaw, on blueberry Texas toast and the “Buff Chick” – a spin on the traditional buffalo hot wing, served on Gabino’s New Orleans style PoBoy Bread. Twine Shreveport’s “Asian Cajun” is the result of placing three corn-dusted slider buns together, topping them with spicy gator married with a sweeter oriental noodle cabbage salad. The fresh salad offerings include crostini, romaine hearts or crudité with a variety of dressings and ingredients. The quiche is made with that day’s freshest available ingredient, and Rick's daily offerings of soup follow that same theme: ever changing, ever evolving. For the heartier appetite, and the ultimate in comfort food, is Twine's signature S'mac & Cheez which is a home style thick and creamy macaroni and cheese using special Trotolle pasta, shaped like cork screws that hold the sauce inside. The occasional Smoked Paprika Goulash plays on the Bohemian theme of Twine and these dishes are conveniently served as a side or as a meal. Twine's Grilled Cheese Academy section of the lunch menu features award-winning sandwiches served with a kosher dill like the "8" which is a blend of eight cheeses or the "Sgt. Pepper" which blends Pepper Jack and Cheddar cheeses with bell and jalapeno peppers. All cheese are of course flown in to Twine Shreveport from Wisconsin. The Pita Pizzas offer different creations each week, one veggie friendly and one fully loaded. They appear on the lunch and dinner menus. Evenings are special at Twine as wines swirl and global flavors swirl. Complementing menu items such as Double Roast Duck Leg, Champagne Boudin, Steamed Blue Lip
Mussels and Japanese Swai (catfish) topped with red quinoa are a library full of interesting libation creations. Every night, Twine Shreveport's Chef Bex creates a couple Blue Plate Specials for $15.13, the address of Twine on Line Avenue, as modern culinary twists on your favorite kid TV dinners. The Ron-Tini, named after the Mayor of Twine (every restaurant needs a mayor!), is a XXX dirty Grey Goose Martini. Notini's Italian Restaurant‌
Nothing beats a steaming dish of spaghetti, loaded with meat sauce and in my opinion, nothing compares to home made. A crispy side of marinated italian salad and some fresh Italian bread is all you need to complete this delectable meal. Notini's restaurant has been cooking homeade recipes since 1982, -where we offer delicious, authentic Italian cuisine in a comfortable atmosphere. Notini's features traditional pastas, premier pizzas, and muffaleta's for an affordable price. Everything is made fresh every day including our Italian bread. We make our lasagna and all of our sauces from scratch and use fresh ingredients to prepare our dihes in our own kitchen. We use the freshest produce, fresh meats, and imported cheese, pasta and olive oil. You can taste the difference! With daily lunch and dinner specials and an exciting children's menu, your entire family will enjoy Notini's. For even larger groups, order your tray of spaghetti, salad, and bread as they will accommadate your needs! Ready for desert? Home made cheesecakes with plenty of flavors to choose from, such as strawberry. vanilla, blueberry, and turtle just to name a few! Let's not forget 4 kinds of italian cookies, and a choice of peanut butter, chocolate chip, or chocolate chip with pecan cookies, all made by the owner! A temptation that is hard to resist. It is hard to choose from as they are all so good, Jerry comments! We also make a type of ice tea that is famous! People from Bossier, Minden, Benton, Shreveport, even New Orleans and Texas all stop by for the Mint Spiced Sweet Iced Tea. Out of all the food and drinks on the menu, the tea is the most ordered, most raved about, and people keep coming back for the free refills. There is just enough mint and just enough sugar, and it's served with an orange and lemon slice on the side of the frozen goblet it comes in! Plenty of people get it to go, either on their way back to work, or going home, they order it by the 16oz or 32oz cup, or if you want to drink it all day, buy it by the gallon or 1/2 gallon. What are you waiting for. Go to the People's Choice Award Winning Family Italian Restaurant, Notini's is located at 2013-A Airline Dr., Bossier

lias Sifuentes left his home in Monterrey, Mexico forty years ago, making his home first in Los Angeles where he worked in a couple of restaurants. By the end of 1966, he was ready to go elsewhere and took a job with Houston’s Mexican Patio Restaurant. It was at that point that he began thinking seriously about the food business, maybe having a restaurant of his own. “I started working there and visualizing what I would do if it were mine, but I wasn’t ever dreaming this,” Sifuentes admits, looking around his office on Bossier City’s Airline Drive filled with memorabilia gathered over the past two decades. It was a job with Pancho’s (which is based in Houston) that transferred him to Bossier City in the late Sixties. This summer Elias Sifuentes will be celebrating twenty-five years as proprietor of the seven Nicky’s Mexican Restaurants in Shreveport, Bossier,
Minden, and Springhill. The years at Pancho's were somewhat rocky, definitely disenchanting, so much so that Elias had to look for other work to support himself and his family. He took a job with the City of Bossier, starting at the bottom as a garbage man. His only regret today is that he never got to drive the truck. During that time he applied for and landed a job at General Electric, where he worked on the line. In 1979 he left GE and not long afterwards became reacquainted with Nicky Ponce. The two men began a Mexican eatery called La Margarita, “Suddenly though it closed, and I was unemployed; Nicky
and I both were unemployed,” In August of 1979 both men started Nicky's Mexican Restaurant along with co-founder Thomas Eason. Three years later, Elias bought out Nicky. With speaking very little english at the time that he left Nicky; Elias and Thomas Eason met the challenges of the restaurant business. Later on Thomas Eason retired and Elias Sifuentes became the sole owner of Nickys Mexican Restaurant. Elias has managed to bring us seven Nicky's Mexican Restaurants with great quality and service. Today Elias is joined by his son Johnny Sifuentes to continue the legacy of great food and service. ❖

WAITING FOR MR. REEDER’S LINE Condi Blast, writer and D. Dillard, editor
“A relationship, I think, is like a shark. You know? It has to constantly move forward or it dies. And I think what we got on our hands is a dead shark." ~ Annie Hall (1977). "Do you prefer 'fashion victim' or 'ensemblelly challenged'?" ~ Clueless (1995). "All men must choose between two paths. Good is the path of honour, heroism, and nobility. Evil... well, it's just cooler." ~ Megamind (2010). Don’t you just love a good flick? The memory of the three lines from truly funny movies relate to me TODAY in 2012 and seem as fresh and new as when I was seventeen and heard that line in Annie Hall for the very first time. The actress (Diane Keaton) is on the cover of AARP this month; humble pie tastes ok at this age and every year tastes better. Time for the new theatre and movie actors to give me a line I can sign off with; hopefully one I will remember at 99 (my goal). That is my request of Randal Reeder, a local to the ARK-LA-TEX and the trial and error measure to make me appreciate his vocational talents. Randal sent a pic on my Iphone and I was really lured into the look. He has to be 6’8” and looks like he can lift a small car off the ground with no sweat. He really has the deep look of a man who has to never back-up from fear. His head is shaved and he does look like a band member of ZZ Topp. I like his look. His eyes are soulful. His interview voice is calm and very appealing. And so it goes with the movie mania here in the Hollywood South location of S’port. Thespians, Hypokrites (Greek), and Actors are historic monikers for those with ability to translate life to lines in a movie, play, and oration. Randal Reeder means to be the modern day actor. Reeder Interview SHM: A little bit of mundane in the area of questions, but how did you get involved in acting? I was born and raised in Carthage, Texas. Shreveport was my ‘backyard’ as a kid. At age 18, I was on Houston TV Network and ESPN out of Dallas in the Global Wrestling Federation. Remember Walker Texas Ranger? I was in it. Remember ER? I was in it, too. SHM: How many films to date and what are the stand-outs? Over 20 with a great gig in Sin City and some will recall W, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, The Waiter, Vampires Suck, and Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay – those are just a few of the movies and for TV… 9 episodes of King of the Hill and Reno 911 are among lots of great spots in lots of shows. ‘Big Bob’ is the memorable character to all my fans. You know, give a view to my web page – just search me - Randal Reeder. You have seen me and just did not know at the time I am a local to the area – but I did my time in Hollywood, always finding my way back to Hollywood South. SHM: Wow. That is a list of work, Randal. Do you have a
FAV in character portrayal? All the parts I have played have a piece of me. Seems the angry side and bad guy surface in those roles; I haven’t played a role that distinguishes the ‘good’ of my personality to date (laugh). SHM: Any specific venue of movies or series, maybe a reality-type preference? Collaboration of producing and writing shows the creative side of me. It is an amazing feeling to collaborate in art form. Stereotypical labeling is one of my choices. I am a big guy. I kind’a have a ZZ Topp thing going on. I was a wrestler. I look tough. I can look at you and you know what I am saying without a word. SHM: So is being a celebrity and presumed tough guy a positive or negative? Hard to say, I have to say it is difficult having human relationships with family and friends. Being treated differently by people you know is an adjustment. I make it positive. SHM: Has it (acting) changed you as a person? Yeah. It has made me less judgmental. As an actor, you really have to get inside the part and explore other ways of thinking to be that character. It has worked out the redneck side of me for certain. The pitfall of acting, well…one can become self-indulgent or selfish. A strong point to acting is that I have a feel for people. The empathy is there in not being afraid of being homeless and I can put myself in other shoes and really get on that level. SHM: So, Randal – Mr. Reeder…any new projects? Exciting times in the old Shreveport are happening and we are working on a film made in Shreveport called Legend of Percy Merciful. It is a horror genre with a spiritual overture. We are developing it with Moonbot Studios! So cool…we are in the second year with our hit show KNG Chronicles on two different networks. There is a new movie out called First Jump Street where I play a character named Karl. Yeah…a biker in a gang. SHM: Word in the industry is this is a BIG role for you. People in the business say this one may be the mile marker in your step to greater parts in some big productions. Seems the biker thing is working. On that note – take your pick: women or bikes? Oh man, Women first and Bikes second. You got’ta know that Bikes really get the Women in most cases (laugh). SHM: So Easy Rider…who is your favorite actor (hero)?
My newest hero is John Goodman. I got the chance to work with him in a funny episode of King of the Hill. I like Charles Barley, too – he co-starred with me in King of the Hill episode that was super funny. SHM: And, your favorite movie? Leaves of Grass. I had the opportunity to work with Oliver Stone and Josh Brolin. This was amazing. I had the opportunity to work with my friend and incredible actor/director Tim Blake Nelson, as well as Ed Norton. But...then there is W. It is hard to top working with Oliver Stone and Josh Brolin. SHM: Wait a minute…John Goodman? Native Louisiana man in the acting field…tell me… why he is a hero to you. He is a BIIIIGGGG guy, like me, and he plays any role like an ace. SHM: I think you have the full house, aces high at this point, Randal. Can you offer a tip to others in being the successful actor? By the way, you are a BIG man with a BIG future! And your last words in this give and take are? Give up everything and go after your dream. Learn the craft. Stay true to you. And so it goes in Hollywood South, Randal Reeder is the actor I will be watching and really watching (hearing and listening) as his lips move with the hope he will share a line with me to go out with…I will be tuned in!

GREG BRAZELL STORY Condi Blast, writer and D. Dillard, editor
eems the latest thing in the news is the rising cost of living, student loan interest, and amazingly, the Presidential race some two years in advance. The razzle and dazzle of the 2012 year for this area should lead off with a home-town boy (man and gentleman) making it known that Hollywood South is doing it again. Gregg Brazzel is a man on the rising tide of Hollywood South. Did it come easy? “It takes years of hard work and dedication.” Gregg learned this from his father. What does come easy? Remembrance of where you are, who watches over you, and how you pay it forward is always on Gregg’s mind.
S
SHM: Hey, Gregg. Fire away and tell me about you. I was born and raised in Shreveport. Over the years, I have

made my living as an actor, stuntman, stunt coordinator and second unit director. In 1979, I was an extra ub a film called Soggy Bottom USA. An extra is like saying your just someone in the crowd, your background. Marshall Texas was the film location and for three months, the opportunity of meeting famous stuntmaen such as Glen Wilder was the reaping. Mr. Wilder was the stuntdouble for Burt Reynolds in Hooper. I got exposed to Bud Eiken who was stunt double for Steve McQueen in the Great Escape. Big Jim Burk who doubled the Duke, John Wayne, was the man who was said "I put your name in did to take my place." and the rest is as they say, history. That was my forst tint gag.. A "gag" is what we Stuntmen refer to as a stunt. At the age of 13, I met John Wayne (The Duke) Actor i doubled. A year later without a film job, a movie called Southern Comfort came to town. Being turned down five times as a photo double, a simple prayer led to the phone call to re-shoot a dog attack as a stunt double for Powers Booth on the set of one film which led to several movies. Silkwood, Tender Mercies, and Dirt Bike Kid were some of the
results; a rock and roll video with Genesis and others with Amy Grant and Reba Mc Entire. A little known, movie called “Places in the Heart”, which produced a “Best Actress Award for Sally Fields became a big credit to my resume and gave me the fuel needed to sale myself as a somewhat accomplished Stuntman. At that point I felt like I was on my way. Little did I know that the real work was just beginning. SHM: When did you know you wanted to be a stuntman? I guess I could say age eight, I was driving cars on my family’s farm! By the time I was ten, I was spinning the cars around. My dad would say, “Son, wear your seat belt, stay in the middle of the field and don’t knock the fence down!” I jumped out of them. I rolled them. My first roll-cage was made out of drill pipe used to drill a water well. I was hooked, didn’t know what I was hooked to, but I was having fun. It was the water skiing, horse tricks, racecars, martial arts, and those backyard 8mm films, which gave me background and a frame of reference that most stuntmen do not have. SHM: Gregg, you are a 2nd unit director, too. What work stands out for you? “The House On Haunted Hill with Oscar-winning actor, Rush Geoffrey. Rush won the Oscar for “Shine” and is known for his character, Barbosa in “The Pirates of the Caribbean”, films.
When I got the opportunity to direct an Iconic Talent like Geoffrey Rush, It was a huge peek in my career. I truly felt a sense of accomplishment. I found that I had a real passion, as a second unit director in action film. It is extremely rewarding. SHM: If you have one word to describe your achieving success in film, what is the word? Perseverance is the word I would use. It was the first real opportunity and I wasn’t about to let it slip away. It was my total focus and still is today. I believe if you can consistently envision something, and preserver, it will come to fruition. SHM: I know you have to be tough as nails, but is the road upward bumpy? Life is filled with people who tell you ‘that is impossible’. I met those people daily. My spirit, Inner strength, and determination is what leads me, and the commitment instilled in me by my Dad. He was the strongest most committed man I ever knew. This is the key to getting me by the hard times. I just think of him. SHM: The good with the bad leads me to ask what is the best part of your job? The travel is wonderful. I have been all over the United States, India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong and China Being apart from my family to work in those many locations was always tough. But now, I just find a way to have them with me. SHM: Gregg, you mentioned your father. I hear and see the result of being the son of a very strong man. Did he impress upon you the spirit of success? Well, he was from the middle of the “sticks” in Dubach, Louisiana. As a young cotton-picker for .25 cents a day, my father became a multi-millionaire entrepreneur in Shreveport. His passing in May of 2010 at 87 years of age was the worst day of my life. But to know him, He was the type of man who built a living out of helping people get out of hard times, like he did. His leadership as my father pushes me forward, even today. SHM: So the bar was set high and you keep scaling higher. What is the highlight of your career? Comedy cures everything. AndEvanAlmightywasonethatwill always stand out in my mind. If I could do physical comedies the rest of my career, I’d be the happiest man on earth. Collaborating with the director and performing physical comedy is like nothing else. I was a huge fan of the “Pink Panther Movies” and have been very fortunate to Stunt Coordinate several comedy films.
SHM: Shreveport is home and you love working here. How many films have you worked on in our city? More than I can remember but I can name a few: “Harold and Kumar”, “Ice Man”, “Year One”, “The Great Debaters”, “The Mist”, “Private Valentine”, “Playing The Field”, ”Super”, “Julia X” and the list goes on. SHM: You have played in more than fifteen movies and I am counting. From Harold and Kumar to “The Mist” and so many more, I heard through the grapevine you are the creator of a better way to shoot films relating to stunts. The Black Hawk Camera Truck is your creation. Tell me more. I formed Black Hawk Production Vehicles to create a unique,
and fresh approach to film action scenes. With a speed capacity to travel up to forty miles per hour, my electric powered camera cart is an added plus. And my Black Hawk Truck has 9 HD monitors and fully incased the camera crew with a safety cage while shooting high-speed action. I can still hear my father saying,” Son, wear your seat belt and don’t run into the fence!” Lester Brazzel Sr. is the man Gregg dedicates this article to. Lester’s son Gregg is from Shreveport, Louisiana and location of his transportation business for the industry is located at 925 Spring Street. Home to Gregg and his family is between Shreveport and Los Angeles.
