Dear Colleagues, What is effective teaching? . . t here is no quick or easy answer to this question, especially to those who chose a career in teaching and understand the complexities involved in learning. With the Ofsted bar being raised in the revised Common Inspection Framework and a new Quality Code in Higher Education, it is time for us to start the debate ‘What is effective teaching?’ . .and up our game, yet again! With this at the forefront of our minds we would like to invite you to the ‘Teaching, Learning & Assessment’ staff development day on Friday 26th October. Our aim is to support you and learn more about what goes on in your classroom. Ultimately, we want to enhance current teaching practice, improve the learner experience and better still, make your life a whole lot easier! Join us at the Fair

4
• teaching and learning develop English, mathematics and functional skills, and support the achievement of learning goals and career aims • appropriate and timely information, advice and guidance support learning effectively • equality and diversity are promoted through teaching and learning

ActiView Visualiser OUTSTANDING TECHNOLOGY Presented by ILT Specialist Practitioner: Claire Thompson.
A visualiser (also called a document camera) is a high pixel digital camera on a flexible arm which allows you to connect to any PC, interactive whiteboard and projector to display any type of material. A visualiser captures images of text, 3D objects, transparencies and microscope slides and just about anything else you can think of. Instantly, you can show images to your students, or record and save images to be used for all the class to see. Having a visualiser in the classroom or science lab means no more crowding round a desk to watch a demonstration or observe an object.
Learner Benefits • Encouraging improvement and it allows ongoing assessment based on what is happening in the classroom at any given time –feeding into mini-plenaries as well as progress over time. • It is a highly powerful teaching tool that provides the opportunity for immediate and
8
effective feedback to students via peer and teacher evaluation of their work displayed on the visualiser. • Opens up new opportunities for learning and it allows interactivity and encourages spontaneity with learners able to work collaboratively. • Visualisers can benefit students who learn from repetition, and need to see material repeated and for students who are absent, for those struggling learners.
Teacher Benefits • Instantly share resources for all to see • You can demonstrate intricate skills to a whole class at once • Create ePortfolios of evidence of learning by capturing images of students work • Capture video demonstrations of activities to playback and share on the interactive whiteboard and across a network/managed learning environment. • Cut preparation time with no need to photocopy or scan. • Assist sight impaired pupils with larger visuals for them to see.

Blogging
FE Practitioner in Media: Jamie Holman.
Building a 21st century model of learning involves all members of the institution in a process of change that requires more than short-term, small-scale projects.” Innovative Practice with e-Learning, JISC 2005 “Combine technologyenhanced options with the best of established practice and the practitioner has greater capacity to create meaningful and transformative learning experiences.” Innovative Practice with e-Learning, JISC 2005
38
“We have created a culture of respect for users. Our student evaluation shows that they value being treated as competent individuals.” Rachel Edwards, Learning Grid manager, University of Warwick “We are on the cusp of change, moving from teacher-centred to learner-centred models, from face-to-face to digital, from synchronous to asynchronous, from solo to group learning, coloured and improved by technology.” Alexi Marmot “You can’t be sure how these spaces will be used. You are just creating the opportunities for things to happen.” Tom Finnigan, Director of Learner Support, Learning Services, Glasgow Caledonian University
Blogging is a well-established vehicle for personal reflection and commentary, although less frequently used under assessed conditions. Nonetheless, blogging can play an effective part in the delivery of formal curricula. Learners take responsibility for describing and reflecting on their progress, have access to peer progression and development and have a safe voice in which to discuss their weaknesses and strengths. Blogging software is free and reflects social media platforms, therefor is available and recognised by the majority of our learners. Blogging allows us to listen to our learners. We may not agree with all they say, or their perception of what they are experiencing. However, the sooner we acknowledge these perceptions, the sooner we can respond.
Staff Benefits • By monitoring postings on the blog, Tutors have better knowledge of how students are progressing and can assess in advance how to approach face-to-face sessions. • Records learner voice and allows a response tailored to the individual. • Organises assessment evidence into a chronological and robust portfolio. (both images and written submissions.) Making marking easier. • Provides evidence to support YOUR good practice. • Also identifies where practice can be improved. • Most importantly it evidences learning. The learners tell us what they have learned and how. We can respond. • Identifies opportunities for differentiation and extension activities tailored to the individual. • Identifies support needs very quickly, session by session. Helps you know your learners!
Learner Benefits There are wide ranging positive outcomes inherent in the activity, notably greater confidence in undertaking critical evaluations. Students who, for example, dislike open discussion or have imperfect written skills are able to prepare their comments in advance before pasting them into the blog. Normally reticent students feel more able to contribute, even to challenge others unseen in a blog. Hence a deeper level of discussion develops – both on the blog and in the subsequent face-to-face sessions. It’s easier to say you don’t understand on a blog, compared to in a class amongst your peers. • Learners are involved in target setting, often leading the setting of targets in response to curriculum. • Fosters responsibility for own learning. • Encourages intellectual curiosity. • Demonstrates the journey, the learner can see what they are achieving session by session. • By looking at each others blogs, encourages peer learning and critiques.
