Tumalo
Community School
Dear Parents and Community Members,
October 11, 2012
The Oregon Department of Education is proud to issue the 14th annual Oregon School Report Cards. Oregon currently rates schools as either “Outstanding,” “Satisfactory,” or “In Need of Improvement” based on factors including student test results, participation, and academic growth. In order to ensure that these reports provide you with the best possible information about your school and your student’s education, we will be working to redesign and improve the Report Cards over the coming year. We welcome your feedback on this redesign process and hope that the information in this Report Card helps to paint a picture of both the successes and opportunities for improvement in our schools. To share your feedback, go to: www.ode.state.or.us/go/nextgen. Rob Saxton, Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction

Redmond Profile Redmond, Oregon With approximately half the landmass of Bend, yet one-third the population, Redmond has been among the fastest growing communities in Oregon for the past decade. Geographically, Redmond is at the center of the tri-county area (Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson), and consequently has several unique regional amenities that serve all of Central Oregon. Redmond is home to the region's commercial airport with direct service Alaska/Horizon, United and Delta to Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Oakland, Salt Lake City, and Denver. The Deschutes County Fairgrounds and Expo Center, arguably the nicest in the state, is also located in Redmond. Central Oregon Community College (COCC) has a campus in Redmond that is actively utilized by residents of Crook and Jefferson Counties and is also home to the region's Manufacturing & Applied Technology Center (MATC), which is a technical training resource for area manufacturers. The Community College will construct a new 30,000 square foot Technology Education Center in late 2012 which will be home to several new programs including non-destructive testing and inspection, the center for entrepreneurial excellence and development and digital/graphic arts. Livability Recreation is important to Redmondites who have easy 30-minute access to downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing in winter, and waterskiing, fly fishing, big game hunting, sailing, rock climbing, hiking, camping, horseback riding, mountain and road biking, ATVing, mountaineering and most of region's 28 golf courses the rest of the year. In fact, with the high desert climate (sunny and little precipitation in valleys), there is little that outdoor enthusiasts can't do any time of year. Development With rapid growth has come major capital investments in Redmond, which has seen its tax base expand by nearly $1,000,000 over the past 10 years. While the impact of the great recession has modestly impacted this tax base growth, recent investments include a $40 million expansion of the Redmond airport from 24,000 square feet to 140,000 square feet, a $110 million dollar bond project that constructed a new 600 student elementary school and a new 280,000 square foot state of the art high school. Revitalization of the City's downtown core is also evident with the addition of Centennial Park, major street reconstruction and sidewalk enhancements, public art and several property improvement programs which help business owners beautify their store fronts. The City of Redmond has also prepared its infrastructure for the future and has planned, engineered and constructed sewer and water capacity, as well as expanded its Urban Growth Boundary to serve residents and businesses for the next 20 years. History The City was named after Frank T. Redmond who in 1905 had settled the area near the present site of Redmond with his wife Josephine. Five years after that, in 1910, the city was incorporated with fewer than 300 residents. Electrical infrastructure and rail transportation was completed just a year later. By 1930 the town had grown to 1,000 people, and ten years later the population had nearly doubled. The town's population remained relatively static for the next four decades, growing slowly around a small commercial /retail center and manufacturing industry. However, the 1990s brought population growth exceeding most cities in Oregon. Going into the 21st century, Redmond again doubled its population to now more than 26,000 residents.

The City of Redmond, Oregon, incorporated on July 6, 1910, is located on the eastern side of Oregon's Cascade Mountain Range, and is considered the geographical heart of Central Oregon, within easy access to a multitude of recreational opportunities. This High Desert community encompasses 15 1/2 square miles (approx. 9,974 acres) and is located on a flat plateau, at an elevation of 3,077 feet above sea level. Redmond is 15 miles north of Bend, the county seat for Deschutes County; 144 miles from Portland; 129 miles from Salem, the State Capital; and 126 miles from Eugene. The City of Redmond is the operator of the region's only commercial airline service airport, Roberts Field. Redmond is a progressive full-service municipality and is considered one of the fastest growing industrial and residential communities in the State of Oregon, currently hosting a population of 21,109 residents; the growth rate continues to be about 8% per year. Redmond School District encompasses 556 square miles and operates 6 elementary schools along with 2 middle schools and 1 high school. Redmond's climate is considered semi-arid with a mean annual precipitation of only 8.64 inches, so residents enjoy many sunny days during the four distinct seasons of the year.

Quality of Life Hospitals St. Charles Medical Center - Redmond completed in 2006 their $30 million expansion and remodeling construction project. SCMC-R is a fully accredited 48-bed hospital offering personalized, quality health care for residents of Redmond and surrounding areas which includes the services of: 24-hour emergency care; intensive/cardiac care; physical, respiratory, and nutritional therapy; radiology; and surgery. Physicians practice in a number of fields including internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, general/vascular, urology, orthopedics, pathology, and a range of other specialties. SCMC-R is in partnership with St. Charles Medical Center - Bend, which is one of the highest quality, lowest cost hospitals in the nation. Numerous medical and health clinics, offices and related facilities have been constructed in the specially zoned area surrounding the hospital since 2003. Livability As one of Central Oregon's fastest growing communities for the past decade, many people find Redmond a very desirable place in which to live. Once a town built around the agriculture industry, Redmondites have a distinct sense of pride about their community and most picture a bright future for the community. Several large-scale projects have been initiated to protect and enhance the community's quality of life. One of the largest scale projects, over $80 million, is shifting pass-through traffic from US Hwy 97 which cuts through the center of the historic downtown area to a new highway re-route east of the central business district. With this project under construction and expected to be completed in 2008, a renaissance is already underway redeveloping the downtown area into a pedestrian friendly environment for entrainment and commerce. Recreation With over 2.5 million acres of public land and open space in Central Oregon, outdoor recreation enthusiasts from professional to beginner find outstanding opportunities for: Hiking (Most anywhere!) Biking (mountain and road) Alpine/cross country skiing and snowboarding (Mt. Bachelor) Water skiing (Lake Billy Chinook & Prineville Reservoir) Motor cross riding Golfing (25 courses) Kayaking (Deschutes River) White water rafting (Deschutes River) Rock climbing (Smith Rock State Park) Mountaineering (Eight Cascade Mountains) Fishing (500 miles of streams and 150 lakes) Hunting ( Camping (Five state parks and numerous Forest Service Campgrounds) Horseback riding‌ And the list goes on. If you need the outdoors to do it, you can probably do it here. We definitely have seasons but an overall mild climate that enables you to recreate year round. The area receives an average 300 days of sunshine a year and only 12 inches of moisture, mostly snow in the winter. Deep mountain snows provide the water for our recreation paradise.

COM M UTE TI M E Averaging 20 m inutes, drive tim es in Central Oregon are very m anageable. New residents tend to select their desired residential com m unity based on its lifestyle and costs, and then find work in the region. Drive tim e is slightly longer for Crook County and Jefferson County residents— reasonable given the m ore rural nature and sm aller population base of these two counties. THE CHALLENGE COURSE at EAGLE CREST CENTRAL OREGON GOLF COURSE
The Challenge Course at Eagle Crest Resort is a short par-63 18-hole course that’s plenty long on satisfaction. In 2006 the course was named the Pacific Northwest’s Best Short Course by Links Magazine. Just don’t let the yardage fool you. Playing 4,160 yards from the tips, The Challenge Course is just that— a challenge, even for the most experienced golfer, requiring an extra-sharp short game and savvy course management skills. On the flip side, opportunities abound, with nine par-3s, and many have fulfilled their dream of a hole in one here. The key to scoring is to have great distance control on all your approach shots. An average round on The Challenge course is approximately three hours, and great for those with more than golf in their vacation plans.

full report
With three large sports centers it’s easy to find a variety of fitness activities to match your mood — and the weather. In the summer, enjoy swimming at one of the outdoor pools or let the kids splash around in the spray park or wading pool. Or, in the winter, swim a few laps at the indoor pool that’s open all year long.
Children:
The sports centers also offer a large selection of Cybex weight equipment, treadmills, stair climbers, elliptical trainers and stationary and recumbent bikes. Other options include yoga and pilates classes, Innergistics classes, pickleball, aqua aerobics, family wallyball, tennis, and bike rentals — perfect for exploring the more than 11 miles of paved trails throughout the resort or the expansive BLM land to the east of the resort and (of course) all around the Cascade Mountains.
