DEBT COUNSELLING EXPLAINED Debtfree DIGI asked Debt Counsellor Renee Marais of Renee Marais Debt Counselling to help explain the debt review or debt counselling process.
Debt Review (also known as Debt Counselling) is a solution whereby a financially troubled consumer is protected from incurring further debt and at the same time enabled to pay of his or her existing creditors in a timely and cost effective manner. Under debt review a consumer is protected by the National Credit Act and enabled to provide for his or her families needs whilst paying off debt over time. The process is easy to understand and is clearly set out in Regulation 24 of the National Credit Act 34 of 2005.
Debt Counsellors negotiate with creditors to find a viable repayment plan that consumers can afford. A consumer will in the future be able to build a new credit record and at the end of the debt review process acquire a clearance certificate and a letter of good standing enabling him or her to start with a clean record. Every consumer should try to have a contingency savings account and not to simply borrow money when things go wrong. If you are already under financial strain do not over extend yourself by seeking further loans. Rather seek professional help from a Debt Counsellor.
Debt Counsellors are registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR) and are Remember: able to assist consumers to restructure debt Nobody ever borrowed their way out of debt! repayments through an Order of the Court,. This enables them to hold on to their assets and over a longer period of time, pay off all outstanding debt.

they found caused them great concern. The NCR now claim to have found several cases of reckless credit granting. What is Reckless Credit? When a creditor gives a consumer money that they know they cannot realistically afford to repay they are guilty of granting Reckless Credit. After extensive investigation by the NCR and African Bank themselves hundreds of cases of Reckless credit or fraud have come to light. The NCR investigation focused on fraudulent activity at one of African Bank’s branches. The NCR has now advised African Bank that it has referred the matter to the National Consumer Tribunal (NCT) and has proposed that the Tribunal impose a fine of R300 million. All the way back in November 2011, one of African Bank’s own internal investigative teams had already discovered that the loan origination system, at their Dundee branch, had been fraudulently breached by agents. Their investigation took a year to complete and found that 397 customers with loans to the tune of R15.5m had broken the bank’s internal rules regarding the granting of loans.

FNB vs ANC The FNB “You can Help “campaign features a number of videos of children in school uniform reading their hopes for the country. FNB said an independent company had surveyed youth aged 10 to 22 to understand who they were and how they felt about South Africa and its future. They told the kids that they could talk freely, without fear or favour. Comments in the videos quickly stirred up a hornets nest of political commentary and landed FNB in hot water with the ANC Here are some quotes from the videos originally posted:
A young man from Gauteng said “ we need to get real. Is South Africa really the paradise? To be quite frank, no. HOME BREW When the ancient Incas of Peru felt like downing a cool refreshing pint, they fulfilled this basic human desire by means of their local brew – a corn-based concoction called ‘Chicha’. Probably the most interesting thing about Chicha is the list of ingredients, the principle ones being water, corn and human saliva. Which probably makes you wonder, how desperate for a brewski they had to be to drink this stuff. Then again, if it’s a hot Sunday afternoon and the liquor stores are all closed, and even if they were open it’s the end of the month and beer money is scarce, maybe you can relate. But in this day and age, does a shortage of funds for frothies mean that you’d have to resort to drinking a yellowish liquid
that you know someone has gobbed in? No, it doesn’t!
In fact, with a small up-front investment in some basic equipment and a minor sacrifice of time to read up on the method and do the job, you could cut your monthly beer-bill by a substantial amount and still have a ready supply of the golden nectar at your disposal. In Europe and the US, home-brewing has long been a well-supported activity, catered to by many outlets that supply the necessary tools and ingredients required. It’s taken some time for the concept to gain a similar following here
in SA, but in recent years some enterprising home-brewers have opened on-line supply stores that provide all that is needed to get started, and now more and more beer-lovers are finding that it doesn’t take much to produce a delicious, refreshing brew that makes the common shop-bought lagers taste like chicha.
How much money do you save? Before you get going you’ll need to buy some equipment. For a simple kit-brew, assuming that you already have some basic kitchen utensils (e.g a stove, a boiling pot etc) your initial outlay could be as low as R450 (includes 25L plastic buckets, plastic airlock, siphon hose, plastic bottles, and your kit). This would produce on average 20L of beer, or 10 six-packs. Given the average sixpack price of R40, your first 20L isn’t saving you much. Except that your next 20L won’t cost you nearly as much because you’ve bought the gear, and only need to spend around R120 on the kit - you do the math.
That was what clinched it for me. I love tasty, well-made beer, and I enjoy the different styles – weissbiers, bocks, ales of all kinds – which usually cost a fair amount in local pubs, especially the imported varieties. However, when I tried my hand at home-brewing I was amazed by the quality of the product that can be had right from the start without much skill But what if you’re the sort of fellow who makes or knowledge, as well as the flexibility I had in a hash of scrambled eggs? Don’t let that put you off – as long as you are clean, patient, being able to brew the styles that I enjoy. and can follow simple instructions, a kit-brew Most home-brewers start with kit-brews, is really hard to get wrong. For an easy-towhich are simply tins of malt-extract already follow beginner’s course in home-brewing, I prepared to produce the style of beer you highly recommend starting with John Palmers’ want. Kits are available in a wide range of excellent ‘How To Brew’ e-book, freely available styles, from India Pale-ales to amber Lagers to on the internet from his own website (www. rich, dark Irish Stouts. Then Get started with these resources and you’ll be siphon the beer into your bottles and leave for brewing your own in less time than it takes to another week, then…enjoy. While this is a very break into a Liquor City. It’s a great hobby, it will simplified description of the basic method, save you money and, best of all, you’ll always the product is still fantastic. After succeeding have a bottle of something to knock back, that with kits, you might be motivated to try partial- doesn’t taste like spit. mash or all-grain brewing, which allow you a greater degree of control on the end product, but requires a bit more skill.
