SOUTH AFRICA’S DEBT COUNSELLING MAGAZINE
FUN FOR LESS December 2018 www.debtfreedigi.co.za
5
December is a lot of fun regardless of if you are on holiday or not. There is just something in the air that speaks of freedom or fun. Look, don’t get me wrong it isn’t as much fun when you only get to hear stories about how your friends are taking 3 weeks off and that and you have to work through but there will be public holidays and the weekends at least. If you are one of those who are taking time off then travel safe and get some rest and recuperate. It has been a tough year.
This issue we look at things you need to keep in mind with 2019 just around the corner. Talking about 2019, can you believe 2018 is done? Seems so fast now (but so slow before). We take a quick look back at some of the highs and lows that impacted on use financially this year and at some of the debt review related matters particularly. When you see it all in one go you will realize how busy the year really was. It can be challenging to have fun on a budget so in this issue we look at some basics of December spending to stay on the right side of your budget. If you slip up during the year end it can turn from a great time to the straw that breaks the camel’s back and sends you tumbling right into the hands of the collections agents and lawyers so, please be careful.
At the same time, all of us need to watch our spending this December (sorry retailers). If you don’t watch out, a few extra bucks spent here and there can add up to some serious damage before you know it. Please make your payments and We all need to remember January please try to have a little fun on your is coming and it can be a very, very journey to become debt free. long month especially if you blew your budget in December.

NO MONEY? NO PROBLEM! One of the best parts about the December break is having some fun and breaking your usual day to day boring routine. But how can you have fun without lots of money to spend? If you are focused on paying off your debts then you may not have lots of money set aside to have fun with but there are many ways to enjoy the December holidays without breaking the bank. One of the most important facets of having a break is a change in routine. Never get to sleep late? Well, on holiday you can. Always eating the same food and going to the same places? Well, this December why not make a point of changing things up and getting that holiday feeling? If you think back to some of the times in your life when you had the most fun it probably involved spending at least a little money... maybe even a lot. However, it probably also involved spending time with people who are important to you and that is something you can have for free.
Sleep late.
(COST= R0)
Stay up late.
(COST= R0)
Visit all your friends. You can take a packet of biscuits or a bottle of cool drink if you don’t want to go empty handed. (COST R20)
Go somewhere new in your area. Explore your own town. Go see that thing you keep meaning to see. Ask your friends for a lift and you won’t even have to pay for transport. For example, many people who live in Cape Town never even climb Table Mountain or Lion’s Head even though they see it every day. (COST - NATURE IS FREE NORMALLY)
Live by the coast? If so, you can organize a group of friends to head down to the beach for a swim or nice walk along the coast (if you don’t swim). Ask everyone to bring a snack and don’t spend too long there and you can probably get away with a packet of chips. (COST R20)
Tired of eating the same old thing? Try having breakfast for dinner (they call it: “brinner”) or making a childhood favourite like, burgers, hotdogs and boerie rolls. You could even try some fun meals like Nachos (use Doritos instead of expensive chips). Making things like jelly and custard can be affordable and give you a change of eating routine. (COSTS VARY)
Or perhaps it is time to do some serious exercise and eat only veggies and drink water rather than fizzy drinks or alcohol. You could use the chance to spend lots and lots of time getting into shape. Why not convince a friend to join you? It may not seem like fun but it will help you keep your expenses down and keep you focused on getting healthy as opposed to what everyone else is up to (party, party). (COST - SOME COMFORT BUT YOU COULD FINALLY START TO GET INTO SHAPE)
Live by the coast? If so, you can organize a group of friends to head down to the beach for a swim or nice walk along the coast (if you don’t swim). Ask everyone to bring a snack and don’t spend too long there and you can probably get away with a packet of chips. (COST R20)
Learn some new card games or ask your friends if they have a pack of cards or board games your family can borrow. Invite them over later and play together over coffee or tea. Read a book or two or three. Ask your friends what they have been reading, borrow some and you can talk together about them once you have read their books. (COST R0 - BORROW ONE FROM A FRIEND)

JANUARY IS COMING!
JANUARY IS COMING! The start of a new year can offer lots of opportunities but also brings with it some financial challenges, especially for parents. The stats show that while December is one of the months in the year when few people sign up for debt help a slow uptick begins at the start of the year. Why is January such a tough month for so many consumers? Many Debt Counsellors will tell you that they don’t really bother trying to get in new clients in December because everyone wants to just ignore their problems and try have some fun during the end of year break. Taking a serious look at your debts and actually doing something about them doesn’t really mix well with having some fun and maxing out your credit in December.
For those who do ‘go large’ and spend everything they can in December on presents, get-aways, and restaurants etc. they quickly find that making all their payments on their debt obligations in December is actually a little easier than doing so in Jan. Why is that? Because they plan short term to get through December and forget that in Jan they will face added costs, a higher minimum installment and some annual expenses. They may also receive less income if they are on a day wage. Since many firms close for a few extra days (particularly in some industries like construction/schools) they may earn far less than normal. That means higher debt bills and less income. Parents in particular have a tough time when January comes around, if they have not been budgeting correctly throughout the year. Back to school costs can be crippling. School clothes and shoes (why won’t these kids not stop growing??) are expensive. As are school text books and items needed for extra mural activities. No wonder some people get bust stealing stationery at work (you naughty so and so’s). People can be caught unprepared if they have not had this as a budget item for several months leading up to the new year.
JANUARY IS COMING!
DEBT REVIEW TIP If you blew your budget in December (even what you had set aside for back to school stuff) then make drastic cuts elsewhere rather than miss your payment or pay less. The ramifications are too harsh. Never miss a payment. Rather look to sell some household items you may have but don’t absolutely need. Do extra casual work to make up the difference. January is best handled if you have been sticking to the budget your Debt Counsellors worked out for you in the past. They will have asked you to set aside a small amount towards these annual costs during each month of the year. This small amount can be used in January to cover those back to school or back to work costs. Make sure to stick to (or even beat) the budget figures suggested each month to be able t handle these added costs.

Kundigheid kom in menigte vorme.
Groete, Christo
