January is much like the first day of annual leave, it holds so much potential. At the start of the year, you imagine all the ways your life is going to change and improve over last year, this is YOUR year! Then, as January goes by, you stare at your shrinking bank balance and slowly emptying wallet, you begin to take strain. Eating healthy is often more expensive; going to gym requires a contract and time (and some sweat). Giving up those bad habits is a great idea, but it can leave you more stressed than normal and that starts to negatively affect your interaction with the people around you. The longer the month drags on, the harder it gets, and it is only January! There are still 11 months left. You begin to wonder if 2019 is eally going to be the year you achieve your goals. Don’t be too hasty to abandon your goals. In our January issue, we discuss not only the best kind of goals to set for yourself, but also why 2019 IS going to be a great year for
you, especially compared to your peers. You might not be having the total “Jol” you imagined, but let us assure you, nobody is. As you will see in this issue, being under debt review can make all the difference, if one of your goals is becoming debt free. We also catch up on some industry related news, information on what the debt counselling associations are all up to, as well as featuring some tips and advice. Be sure to check out our Mythbusting article all about your credit score and credit bureau report. We also look at ways to boost not only your Google web ranking but also consumer confidence in your website. Don’t worry we don’t get too technical, because we don’t understand all the technical stuff too, but it will guide you in dealing with your IT guys in improving things. After the New Year ‘glow’ wears off and you return to the normal drudgery of daily routine, it can be tough to stay motivated. This is because results take time, and most of us are easily distracted, easily
bored. We find it hard to maintain that clear vision we had at the start of the year. The ability to push through the rest of the year, day by day, month by month is what will see you make a success (or not) of the year. So, keep on making those monthly debt repayments, chipping away at your debts, keep checking your PDA statements to see how you are doing and you will keep moving forward towards your financial goal of becoming debt free.

19 YOUR 2019
VS
THEIR 2019
YOUR 2019 VS THEIR 2019 You may be wondering what 2019 will bring. Is this going to be a good year or a tough year? With the way the economy has been going globally (and locally) it is not unfair to say that 2019 is going to be a tough year for everyone. Even Government, who tend to be upbeat about the economy to try and build confidence, is being conservative in their estimates of how businesses will fare in 2019. Economists feel that we are in for more petrol hikes, interest rate increases and with “Junk” status by the 3rd and final Ratings agency looming on the horizon, we may see a forced huge exodus of foreign investment in the near future. All this puts strain on what people spend, how much they can earn, and that is going to impact on you and your friends. In general terms, it means that more people will have to spend more each month, and at the same time be earning less or have less spending power. That means less people spending money at shops and businesses run by others, and then more pressure on everyone to pay everyone else. You probably have people who owe you money but haven’t paid yet and so you are struggling to pay your creditors.
All that makes 2019 sound like a potential nightmare. While it is true that things are not looking super positive, it is important to remember that you are not alone in dealing with these challenges. Everyone, countrywide is going to be in for a tough time, including your friends and neighbours.
YOUR 2019 VS THEIR 2019
ADJUST YOUR ATTITUDE Those who adjust to the tough times, fare best. If you are already in debt review then you are taking positive steps monthly towards improving your financial situation. The process however, can be slow and that brings its own challenges, but it is effective and can help you get out of debt as long as you don’t miss payments. Those around you might think that the solution to not being able to make ends meet, is to rely on credit. This is certainly something that can help in the short term, but is not a justifiable long term solution.
YOUR 2019 VS THEIR 2019
Research shows that more and more people are using credit to cover basic expenses like groceries. Recently Pick N Pay began offering consumers access to their own credit (since people were buying so much food on other credit provider’s credit cards anyway). They quickly extended over R1 Billion to consumers in just a few months (and they only offer consumers a small amount of credit at a time). You may be jealous that your friends seem to still be able to go out to fancy restaurants, drive a big fancy car and can hop on a plane for a weekend getaway. What you may not realize is that your friends are probably up to their necks in debt, and to keep living this way, they are probably sinking deeper and deeper into debt. The other thing that is probably happening is they are repaying less and less of their total debt each month, quickly falling into the trap of only paying the minimum required amount to scrape by (especially in January). This means that their overall debts are growing and they are ultimately paying more and more in fees and interest over time.

YOUR 2019 VS THEIR 2019
A SIMPLE LIFE If you are in debt review, then you have probably been there. You were once also stuck in that downwards debt spiral. You know that eventually, they are going to have some sort of emergency they cannot afford, and it will max out all their credit. They will try to get more credit but won’t qualify and then things are going to get nasty very quickly. The horrible collections calls, SMS and threats. So, if you are already in debt review and are making those reduced payments every month, living a more simple life then: Congratulations! Each month, as you make that debt review payment, your debts are slowly reducing while those around you are slowly getting deeper and deeper into debt. If you are in debt review then you will also have agreements with credit providers about what interest rates will be used. These may very well be fixed, which means that if interest rates do go up, then your debt repayments under debt review will remain unaffected (some rates may be linked). Your interest rates have probably already been slashed by your credit providers, meaning you are paying back mostly the capital portion of your debt (Thanks credit Providers!). This makes you less vulnerable to rate hikes and other similar pressures.
YOUR 2019 VS THEIR 2019
SLOW & STEADY WINS THE R ACE Others may not notice your slow journey towards financial freedom, and it certainly is not flashy and doesn’t mean you can live a life of luxury, but it does mean that you can be confident that you can provide what your family needs each month. This is the first and most immediate goal of debt review. The next goal is to pay off all your debts over time so that you end up not owing anyone anything. That takes a little longer. True, the process can be a slow one, but over the next 11 months of 2019, your personal debt situation will steadily be getting better and better regardless of what is happening to the economy around you. This gives you peace of mind, you can stress less about your debt, not just because you are not being chased by collections agents, but because you know that you are moving towards a better financial future.
YOUR 2019 VS THEIR 2019
You can see the light at the end of the tunnel, this is a serious physiological benefit. Your relationships with others will probably reflect this positive attitude - less snapping at people, less pressure, less fighting with people. So, yes, both you and your friends might end up paying more for petrol and you may see the Rand take a pounding from other currencies. The price of everything may go up for all of us, but if you are under debt review your 2019 is looking rosy. Each month is a small victory, each payment a step towards freedom and that means you are going to have a better year than most of your friends*. *share the love and tell your friends about debt review and how it has turned things around for you. They probably need it too.

MYTH BUSTING YOUR
CREDIT REPORT
MYTH BUSTING YOUR CREDIT REPORT
BLACKLISTING People in South Africa often use the term “blacklisted”. They think this refers to some sort of arrangement where you cannot get credit because you have not repaid your credit well in the past. You will often see adverts (illegal adverts) online or via SMS that promise loans despite being ‘blacklisted’. Blacklisting was used many, many, many years ago, but does not exist anymore. Credit Bureau Transunion says: ‘“Blacklist” is a misleading term, a category that dates back to when credit bureaus only kept negative information. Now credit bureaus hold both positive and negative data.’ It’s similar to reminiscing about what a great invention the telegraph was. Imagine an advert for the latest cell phone saying something like. Are you having trouble with your telegraph service in your town? Rather use the NEW X11 Mobile device with 4G connectivity…etc. You might think the advertiser had gone mad talking about technology from the 1800’s (and you may not be wrong).
Talking about blacklisting is old and stupid, it no longer exists. If you see an advert that mentions it, please be careful that you are not being scammed. They know that if you fall for the blacklisting reference, then you will probably fall for other tricks i.e. like paying them money upfront so that you can borrow money from them. *The telegraph was developed in the 1830/40 by Samuel Morse and some others to communicate via the dots and dashes of Morse code over long distances. It was ingenious at the time.
MYTH BUSTING YOUR CREDIT REPORT
I HAVE A BAD CREDIT SCORE SO I CAN’T GET CREDIT This is simply not true. You may end up paying a higher rate of interest due to your poor payment history, but if you can afford credit, then you should be able to gain access to it. After changes to the National Credit Act a decade ago, credit providers must ask how much you earn and what you are currently spending your money on each month. This will include any other debts you have. If you then still have some money available (after making allowances for emergencies) the credit provider will know how much you can pay them back each month. They can then figure out how much to loan you. eg. If you earn R3000 a month and spend/set aside R2800 each month towards your costs and saving, then you have R200 available as a possible monthly debt repayment installment. The credit provider can then decide how many months they want to get R200 back from you, and how much they are prepared to lend you.
MYTH BUSTING YOUR CREDIT REPORT
For example, the online Ubank Calculator shows that you could borrow R1000 and pay it back over 10 months at around R204.79/ month. Your credit score will then help them decide what interest rate to offer you (but most of the time most credit providers simply make you pay the highest possible interest rate the government allows regardless). If you go to credit provider and they turn you down for credit, it is likely because you cannot actually afford more credit and should rather look to go into debt review to get rid of your debts, as opposed to accumulating more debt.

DEBT REVIEW SCHOOL Set Smart Goals for 2019 S – Specific, M - Measurable, A - Achievable, R - Realistic, T- Time-based
The more specific your goals are, the more you have thought them through and the more likely you are to reach your goal. If you can measure progress towards your goal it makes it easier for you to see how much effort is still needed to get to that goal. Setting goals relating to things that you have some measure of control over makes them achievable. Don’t set goals that depend entirely on other people. Starting with smaller realistic goals which are within your grasp, if you put in the effort, is better than dreaming too big and soon giving up in the face of the impossible. Rather split a big goal down into several smaller goals which will lead you towards your ultimate goal. Setting a goal without setting a time limit is like letting two teams play soccer endlessly over days and days - they will get bored and tired and you would get bored watching it. Give yourself a set amount of time to reach your goal. This will also help you measure how far along you are progressing and adjust the effort involved. HTTP OR HTTPS
DOES IT REALLY MATTER?
HTTP OR HTTPS - DOES IT REALLY MATTER?
IS IT SECURE? When a consumer is thinking about entering debt review (or using your company’s services) they will often visit your website to check if you have an online presence. They will use this opportunity to do some online research about you and also gain some knowledge of your branding. Not having a website is a bad sign, and they may immediately doubt that you offer a professional service (everyone has a website, right?). An old, out of date website indicates that you are not good at staying current, and are probably overworked and under resourced (if you can’t afford to update your site then you probably are not doing well financially). An informative website that has a modern feel and has helpful information, including ways to contact your offices, is normally a sign that this business might be the right service provider for you.
How good your site looks, combined with how high or quickly you (your business) show up on a search engine (Google) are often factors for the potential customer in deciding whether to use your services or not. What shows up in a prospective clients web browser address bar, could be the reason why your website is hurting (or helping) your business. Sitting in your visitors web browser address bar might be the words:
Not Secure | www.yourwebsiteaddresshere...
HTTP OR HTTPS - DOES IT REALLY MATTER?
NOT SECURE? SINCE WHEN AND WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
In 2018, Google Chrome users started to see this status showing in their address bar as Google began to show whether the site was HTTP or HTTPS (the S stands for secure). The warning shown refers to the lack of security for the connection to that page. It’s telling visitors that information sent and received to that page is unprotected and it could potentially be stolen, read, or modified by attackers, hackers, and entities with access to internet infrastructure, such as Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and governments. Now, would you prefer to deal with a website that is secure or not secure? The answer is obvious. More and more consumers are worried that their information may be exposed to bad people who want to scam them. When site visitors see this on your site, it could make them nervous.
HTTP OR HTTPS - DOES IT REALLY MATTER?
would you prefer to deal with a website that is secure or not secure? In the past, most sites were HTTP and it is only more recently that sites like Facebook, Amazon and Google began shifting to HTTPS (millions of companies have migrated) and Google feels that a secure site is better for obvious reasons, and will often give it a better rating than a similar nonsecure one.
What is special about HTTPS?
HTTPS uses the SSL/TLS protocol to provide a secure connection, which is both encrypted and authenticated. That means it is safer to enter personal information.
How do I change my site to HTTPS?
If you manage your own website, then you can do some research online. It will require finding out if your web hosting provider can give you the SSL Certificate or not. Then, depending on how you built your website (maybe using something like Word press) you may need to add a plugin that can do all the work for you. If someone else made your site for you then it is a case of paying them to do that.
Get Ahead of the Curve
Tom Levine who is a Search Engine Marketer from TheSearch.Club says: “If you’re a site that deals with customer data, even just names and email addresses, migrate now before Google gets really serious. It might already be hurting your rankings and affecting user-trust in your site. With initiatives like Lets Encrypt for the first time in the history of SSL certification, it’s now possible to do it for free.”

HTTP OR HTTPS - DOES IT REALLY MATTER?
Will it affect my Google ranking?
The simple answer is: Yes and probably in a good way if you transition properly. You may see some fluctuation at first but over time you should see a positive bump.
301 Redirects
When your website address changes (from HTTP to HTTPS) be aware that some of your links and back links may be negatively affected. The way around this, is to add what are called 301 redirects to your old address that tells everyone looking for the old address (even Google), that you have moved to a new address. Fortunately it is quite easy. It is like putting an electronic version of a note on the shop front window of your old place with a map to the new place, and makes it easy for everyone to find you without you losing out on those older links and referrals.
Update your Site Map
Search engines use your site maps to know what you have on your site. Make things easier for them by updating your site map with the HTTPS structure. This is often done via a SEO plugin, so it can be done speedily as well. As search engines like Google become more and more cautious, and favor sites with HTTPS protocol it may become increasingly important for companies to move over to HTTPS. Currently, you may find that it is less stress to migrate, but your site visitors may be getting nervous about the ‘not secure’ status showing in the address on your site. Why not talk to your IT guy about the benefits and challenges of switching to HTTPS?

The Annual Debt Review Awards Peer review is already underway and email invites to participate are being sent out. Remember the NCR Database of registrants is used as the basis of the email list – yes we know it is not always 100% accurate so we urge registrants to update their details if they have changed contact info and to let us know: debtreviewawards2019@debtfreedigi.co.za
NEW YEAR, NEW AWARDS GALA VENUE Each year the Peer review results throughout the year are compiled and announced at the Annual Debt Review Awards Gala. This black tie event is attended by the top performing firms within the industry and on the evening the top companies are announced. This year the gala evening is moving to KZN. Awards founder Zak King says:”We have been eager to bring the Gala to KZN for some time and are glad to be doing so this year. We look forward to many local Debt Counsellors and Credit Providers attending.” Over the years the Awards gala has alternated between Cape Town and Gauteng. The change will see many who have not had a chance to attend get to join in the event. Many will travel from around the country to attend and so with that in mind there will be some additional events held in the days leading up to the Gala evening. “We want to give those traveling maximum value for money and are excited to be hosting several workshops and meetings as well as some social events on the days leading to the Gala” says Zak.
Groete, Christo
