the poster his year’s Arts Festival poster artwork was created by Lulu Kaufman of Cuthbert, Georgia. Her work, she says, celebrates laughter, love, nature, and life, and embraces the spirit of “girl power.” After traveling and living all around the globe, Lulu has settled in southwest Georgia. She works in her studio on an antebellum horse farm, painting on recycled roof tin, reclaimed barn wood and old windows. Lulu travels to art shows, galleries and shops across the southeast, she says, “spreading love and sunshine.” She’s also the designer for official Jimmy Buffet tour T-shirts.

Color Wheel Studio’s new second location is open for the ArtWalk. An exhibition of student work from the studio’s after-school program is on display in the gallery and the working studios are open for tours. Color Wheel is a community art studio offering preschool, after-school, and school break programs as well as art classes for students 8-18 years old.

She lives in Oakhurst but grew up in Germany and Belize. Classes Class 1 • Awareness through Movement Saturday, 10-11 am A one-hour class in the Feldenkrais Method, with Louise Runyon. Ingenious, gentle movement sequences designed to bring mobility, ease and efficiency to all forms of physical activity through heightened awareness of how the body and mind can function together as an integrated whole. Participants will need mats.

Class 2 • Moving in Mutuality Saturday, 11:30 am-12:30 pm With Marjorie Pomper. Connect with others and learn to move together while finding and sharing your unique movement wisdom. The class is made up of a series of movements that involve moving together and responding to each other. These explorations are simple and can be fulfilling for participants at many different skill levels. They do not require dance experience.

Class 3 • Dueting Saturday, 1-2 pm With Wayne Smith and jhon r. stronks. A workshop class about dancing and moving as two, as a duet. This will be a team effort with a focus on participants exploring and improvising in diverse ways. The class can work for all dance skill levels and participants do not have to provide a partner.

Class 4 • Ballroom/Social Dance Sunday, 1-2 pm East Coast Swing and the Salsa, with D. Patton White. Beacon Dance Artistic Director D. Patton White will lead participants in the basic steps of these dances. No partner is necessary, just come and have fun! Participants will learn a few basic variations on each dance.

Andrea di Robilant, Chasing the Rose: An Adventure In the Venetian Countryside From the author of the best-selling A Venetian Affair, comes the charming chronicle of his search for the identity of a mysterious old rose. Andrea di Robilant’s tale takes us back to the time of Josephine Bonaparte, as well as into some of the most delightful rose gardens in Italy today, brought to colorful life in the watercolors of artist Nina Fuga. In his biography of his great-greatgreat-great-grandmother, Venetian lady Lucia Mocenigo, di Robilant describes a pink rose that grows wild on the family’s former country estate, mentioning its light peach-andraspberry scent. This passing detail led to an invitation for an audience with a local rose doyenne, who wondered if di Robilant’s unnamed rose could possibly be one of the longlost China varieties that 19th century European growers had cultivated but which have since disappeared. What starts out as a lighthearted quest

becomes a meaningful journey as di Robilant contemplates the enduring beauty and symbolism of this mysterious flower.

4:30-4:45 pm • Jimmy Johnson, 2013 Decatur LOL Open Mic Winner Former actor and long-time nerd Jimmy Johnson is the winner of the 2013 Decatur Arts Festival LOL Open Mic contest, which means he’s got a full spot of his own this year! Jimmy helps people of all ages as a math and SAT and general academic tutor, and he’s glad that comedy gives him a chance to get away from parabolas, probability, parametric equations,

pronoun agreement, prepositions, and paragraphs.

5-5:15 pm • Kelly Spillman Kelly currently performs improv in the main cast at Basement Theatreand performs stand-up at the major clubs in Atlanta including Punchline, Improv and Uptown. She has hosted at Laughing Skull Lounge and performed in their Best of Atlanta Showcase. Kelly’s keen observations about human behavior and her witty storytelling style engage all audiences.

Saturday, May 24, 10 am-5 pm • Sunday, May 25, Noon-5 pm Old Courthouse on the Square Food, Fun and Fashion in the Modern Era Highlights from the Guy Hayes Collection his exhibit offers a small selection of black-and-white photographs from the collection and provides a unique view of food trends, clothing styles and recreational diversions of the 1950s and 1960s. Guy Hayes, a professional freelance photographer from 1944 to 1983, graduated from Clarkston High School and served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he settled in Avondale Estates. He was a regular contributor to the Atlanta Journal, the Atlanta Constitution and the DeKalb News/Sun. More than 11,000 of his original negatives were donated to the History Center in 1984. Although very little documentation accompanied this collection, Hayes’ artistic work reveals a prolific talent with an incisive eye.

The show, “Storybook Look: Illustrations by Southern Artists,” opens during the Artwalk on Friday, May 23, with a wine and cheese reception in the library lobby at 7 p.m. This year’s participants include award-winning illustrators Mark Braught, R. In May, the City of Decatur sponsors a street-side celebration of the arts in downtown Decatur. This pop-up art program features a juried mix of artists, singers, musicians, dancers and performers who will entertain and delight all who happen by. Performances take place on Saturday afternoons from 3 to 5 pm, through mid-May. Don’t miss a single Saturday because you never know what will be happening – or where!
