WELCOME TO INSIDE GOLF – STEVE BEDLOW Why another golf magazine? We felt it was time that golfers — Men, Ladies & Juniors, of all ages and sizes had some real information on what’s going on in the golfing world.
What is making us different:
Inside Uncovered — our team of Course reviewers go undercover to play golf anonymously all over the UK and give an honest opinion on a course the day it is played. This gives information back to you the golfer, which then allows you to then make an informed decision on where to visit based on what the courses we have tested for you.
Tech reviews — with so much choice available in the market how do you know what is going to work for you? We are trying to take some of the guess work out of this by reviewing products that are new on to the market or have been upgraded. We give an honest opinion not aligned to advertisers spend. Equipment reviews — so many new clubs, either Drivers, wedges and even putters are coming out each month how do you keep updated?
We aim to not only review clubs but also give you information on manufacturers new releases to help you make informed decisions – but we always stress that you should see your local Pro, go to a fitting day or a retail shop with test facilities to be custom fit. So much equipment is in the hands of the Pro now to make sure you buy the right clubs it has to be seen as part of the decision making. Instruction — so much is out there with instruction, such as ball back of stance, ball of the front foot, etc it can all get very confusing. Liam James, part of Rob Rocks Teaching Academy, has agreed to join our Inside Golf Team and make instruction fun and easy to follow. Liam is slowly making his way as a coach to tour players on the European Tour, LET and club golfers all over the country. COURSE REVIEWS INSIDE GOLF UNCOVERED COURSE REVIEWS – THESE ARE 100% INDEPENDENT! It’s how we have found the course on a particular day, it’s only fair that golfers who are paying green fees have an opportunity to know in advance what to expect.

e are here to help the courses as well as the golfers who play if you are not happy with the review we are more than happy to discuss and to come back and do another review. We all have not so good days! Reviews are important for golfers when planning a golfing trip – finding out what other golfers think of a course, clubhouse etc. Our reviews will evolve as we get feedback on what golfers are wanting.

Location Yes, most cars/phones have Sat Nav but there is nothing better for a visitor to the course to see a sign giving them either directional or mileage. Also, a few signs to say the course is coming up 150 yards on the left or right – appreciate it’s not easy and permissions are needed but think about the visitor.
Welcome Received Incredible how many welcomes you get that are like a script “Good morning – please sign in the visitor book, code for the changing room door is…” Let’s make an effort - these are customers coming into your club, a smile costs nothing. Be sociable they may even buy something! Practice Facilities Appreciate space can be limiting for many but let’s make sure putting green pace is similar to course, nets are maintained but visitors need to know before they arrive what to expect. The local driving range may be worth a stop on the way!
Course Yes, the most important part of any golf day and it is what it is sometimes, the good, the bad and the ugly – but a review is a review. Personally, I like Links courses that are not overly manicured and look the part of the land, others like fairway definition we all have our preferences and we can only say what we see. But no excuses for a course that wants a green fee but then can’t mow the tees, water new laid grass or give the course some TLC! Club House How does it feel as a visitor, are you treated as a member, is there a good menu selection, do the members talk to you. We have all been to courses and left saying the course was lovely but the food was overpriced and no one spoke to us. As part of our reviews we will say it how it is – don’t take offense.

The Course
If you have not heard of Burnham and Berrow where have you been? We appreciate it’s not on everyone’s doorstep but if you play golf, strive to play some of the best courses the UK has to offer and are accessible for visitors, then this is right up there. From the moment you arrive and feel the wind whipping in off the sea you know you are in for a good test of golf. This is a true links course and like the home of golf the swales have names, avoid the kitchen sink on the 15th!
Our review
We played the course end of June as part of a media day after the completion of 3 new tees - 6/9/11. Any redevelopment of a course has to add “something” to the experience, and to start moving tees on a course that sits in the top 35 in the UK is a brave thing to do, but like with the management of the club, Burnham and Berrow is innovative and wants to move forward. Do the new positions add something to the course? Most definitely - and as Richard the Course manager pointed out they didn’t bring in new sand and grass, they moved it from other areas of the course, making the new tees very natural looking – as if they have always been there!

Location – 4/5 Burnham is not that big a place and it is signposted from the main road. Welcome Received – 5/5 Pro was very helpful with a well-stocked shop, the bar was like a home from home, leather settees and armchairs, just what you need after 18 holes. Practice Facilities - 5/5 Some of the best facilities you will find – great driving range and chipping area with a practice green right next to the first tee, exactly where it should be! Club House – 4.5/5 Lovely atmosphere and food we had was exceptional, breakfast hit the spot. Course – 5/5 What can you say about a piece of land that was always meant to have a golf course – why did it ever take so long, Somerset’s Home of Golf. Stuffiness Far from it, made to feel very welcome and the members love the fact that visitors are playing “their” course. Would you play again Every day of the week if I could. Cannot say better than that! Thoughts Have played Burnham a few times now and it never fails to live up to my expectation or excitement – you seriously want to play good golf from the moment you arrive. Dormy House for anyone wanting to stay over and play more than one day, if you are ever short of a player give me a call. Wonderful fitting centre on site with all the kit!

Practice Facilities - 4/5 Good practice area for irons and driver with a couple of big trees to aim at. Short game area was more than adequate, didn’t see the Swing Studio. Practice green appears to be an afterthought, but does its job.
Practice Facilities - 4/5 Driving range with 4 bays and close to the club house. Decent short game area and putting green reflected the course greens. Has a net for those rushing to the first tee!
Club House – 2/5 This in my opinion is a corporate golf course – it feels a bit upmarket and “no soul” to the club. Met at a reception desk, given code for changing room that then has a back entrance to the Pro – shop. Didn’t really get to see much of the “clubhouse” as no real way back after putting shoes on!
Club House – 4/5 Spike bar which was great to see with a selection of food available. Dress code was relaxed (collar and tie preferred in Restaurant) and the Members were chatty.
Course – 3/5 Some great golf holes on the Colt course, the long dry spell had not helped the course and it looked like parts of the course were struggling. It’s a course where you have to play the distance and we did enjoy the day, but didn’t catch the course on a good day!
Course – 4/5 It’s a pretty looking course with trees and heather, but the greens although true were very slow when we played in July which was a real shame. Members prefer them a bit quicker as well so maybe caught them on a bad day!
Stuffiness Do I want to stay stuffy? Just think they are more used to dealing with corporate and charity golf days or maybe a different type of golfer!

Would you play again? Yes, feel I have to BUT wouldn’t rush back!
Would you play again? Second time of playing. I won’t rush back but glad I have played it.
Thoughts Believe we caught the course on a bad day and in the middle of a tough summer with very little rain, you just think it should be offering more! Staff were not overly attentive, except the guy at the half way hut, it was closing when we got there (even though people on course) but allowed us to buy some drinks & snacks. Have spoken to Corporate groups and a couple of charities who use the resort and they love it. At £2500 joining fee and £3750 a year golf membership maybe I am not their type! Green fees are right up there – be warned.

Thoughts Second time playing and looked forward to playing it, 2 courses The Heath from 6300 off white tees to 5700 off the Reds is a good test with some excellent golf holes with several risk and reward decisions to make – I like that in my golf. Play the 17th and you will understand a dog leg of a hole and depending on line off the tee can make a difference of between 6 clubs for your second shot! Fun to play and the experience would have been complete if the greens had not been so slow. The 9 hole Forest course has a good reputation.

Club House – 4/5 Spike bar with food served all day and a nice relaxed feel to the club. Dress code is golf attire which is perfect. Decent enough facilities in the changing room.

Course – 4/5 Has gone through some massive changes over the last 12 months especially after Storm Doris knocked out many trees around the course, encouraging the heath back onto the course.

Thoughts Was looking forward to playing the course and it sort of hit the spot! Pleased I played it and if you are in Skegness and looking for a good game of golf this is your place. Just under 6500 yards and Par 71 from the Whites and just under 6000 yards and par 73 of the Red’s. Green fees from £25.00 - £50.00 depending on time of year.
Thoughts Always difficult reviewing your own course but have tried to be fair, the course can play tough during the summer especially in dry periods. We get a lot of visitors and is on many golfers list of must courses to play. Members prefer the greens quicker – but don’t all members, not particularly long course 6247 off the White tees but you do have to be straight – trees, heather and rough! Is easily up there with any course in the area.

Practice Facilities - 5/5 Long game, short game, putting greens they have it all. Take your own practice balls though. All a short walk from the club house, you could spend all day just practising here.
Practice Facilities - 5/5 From covered bays to a great short game area you are well served to be prepared for what lies ahead. The putting green is fast and true and unlike so many courses are exactly what you are going to get when you start.
Club House – 5/5 Overlooking the 1st tee and 18th green this is what I describe as a true golf course clubhouse, very relaxed with some wonderful daily specials on the menu, which on the day we ate were superb. Members nice and chatty.
Club House – 4.5/5 Dress code – you need to be aware, the Thirsk room is smart casual, no golf shoes or waterproofs. The Vardon and Dining Room are Jacket and Tie from 10.30 am, traditional and we don’t mind that. Visitors need to respect and be aware. Changing rooms do exactly what they are meant to and can’t fault.
Course – 5/5 Played on a nice windy day but the locals said this was only a breeze! This is a true test of golf and you will need every shot in the bag and then some. Heather and dunes everywhere so you need to keep the ball straight. The fairways were fabulous to play off. You will be tested with ball above, below and on slopes as not many level lies.
Course – 4.5/5 This is why we are here and it doesn’t disappoint, my golf did but you have to heed to what’s in front of you and this course is 100 years in the making. There are trees, heather and bunkers that all welcome an errant shot but this is a true test of golf and why it is always mentioned as a top top golf course.
Stuffiness Not at all, traditional but more than welcoming – I think the staff and members know any visitor has made an effort so they embrace them (not literally) but are genuinely happy to have them at the course.
Stuffiness It is a bit, even when talking to them on the phone, but they know what they are and if you are OK with that then embrace it.
Would you play again? Cannot wait and next time going to make a special visit not a passing one.
Would you play again? Absolutely, but need my “A” game.
Thoughts If you picked this course up and moved it 100 miles south, firstly you would never get on the course it would be that busy and secondly the great value green fees would increase (presently £40 a day for autumn 2017 and spring 2018). The course is that good the R&A would have petitions to get this course on the Open Rota. Any Pro getting ready for The Open should come and practice here, it’s that good. Only 6641 yards from the back tees 5800 yards from the ladies) but it feels and plays longer especially when that breeze gets up!
Thoughts The course did not disappoint I heard great stories about it and was excited to play the course, measuring just under 7000 yards off the back this is a true test even at 6000 yards for the Ladies its tough. Took me a while to “get” the club – but once I got it I was fine, just be prepared for a Yorkshire welcome – once they know you, you will friends for life.

Location – 4.5/5 Fantastic location, on the banks of Loch Lomond. It is easy to find, well signposted, and first impressions as you get to the clubhouse is “wow”. Welcome Received

Welcome Received – 5/5 Club is well set up for receiving visitors and you will be welcomed and directed easily, a true Irish Welcome that many copy but few can pull off.
Practice Facilities - 4/5 Very good, with long shots over water, and range balls which float on the water after landing. Nets and putting area are also available adjacent to the first tee.
Practice Facilities - 5/5 World class facilities, some of the best facilities you will find – great driving range and chipping area with a practice green right next to the first tee, exactly where it should be! Greens a true reflection of the course’s greens.
Club House – 4.5/5 Dress code was relaxed in the bar, which is great. Attention from the F&B staff was great, and good food choices available. Shower and Changing room area was wonderful – nice (large) fluffy towels.
Club House – 5/5 Separate members and visitors areas, with the visitor’s area relaxed and usable with golf attire. If you’re invited into the member’s lounge you will require jacket and tie. Welcome to Club House was again exceptional with a genuine interest in your golf.
Course – 4.5/5 The course layout is exceptional, winding its way through the lakes and valleys in the lowlands of Scotland, before crossing over to the 9th tee, when, after teeing off, you cross into the Scottish Highlands.
Course – 5/5 One of the world’s top courses. Exceptional design and views make this a must-have on anyone’s bucket list. It’s hard to find the words to describe how great this golf course is and has gone to the top of my play-list!
Stuffiness Not really, it carries some Scottish heritage with the area and Loch Lomond on the doorstep but made to feel welcome.
Stuffiness Royal County Down is a very traditional course so it has reasonably high standards of dress and behaviour but that doesn’t make it stuffy, just traditional.
Would you play again? Yes ,cannot wait to go back.
Would you play again? YES, Would I play again – Every day of the week if I could! Cannot say better than that!
Thoughts Can only say good things about the course and the day (except the weather was a bit cloudy) At the end of the 9th a unique “half way house” The highland Laddie, a boat sunk into the ground, well stocked with food and drink, and manned by friendly staff, some great memories to take away from the day.
Thoughts Royal County Down is one of those courses you need to get to grips with early and be prepared to make some tough shots. It ranks up there in level of difficulty with Carnoustie, Turnberry and Muirfield. Not for the fainthearted. This is really important if you go there as a high handicap golfer you will struggle – but still go and enjoy it for what it is, an exceptional golf course.

Practice Facilities - 4/5 The “Strip of land” as they call it, is far enough for a 4 or 5 iron but a good place to warm up, the shop will lend you some balls or you can take your own. Chipping area and putting green with a practice net as well. Good to see greens same pace as course. Club House – 3.5/5 Its newish and big but just doesn’t have the feel of a golf course that has just celebrated 125 years. It works don’t get me wrong and nothing wrong with it just it’s a new building on an old golf course – make sense?

Course – 4.5/5 Well worth the drive and has that real links tradition of being right on the beach, and on some holes it feels like you are on the beach. Accuracy is paramount and maybe the 4 or 5 iron off the tee from the range is the way to go? The sand dunes, the blind shots and the train line all add to the beauty of wanting to play well. Stuffiness – No! but with the new clubhouse it has a different feel to many courses. Any visitor will enjoy their day.
Would you play again? – Yes, but with a strategy and I would stay over and play again.
Thoughts Where to start – what a great golf course and foremost that is what we are doing reviewing courses and experiences. This course is right up there and if you were playing St David’s and Aberdovey in a weekend or over 2 days you would be hard pressed to play 2 better courses in 2 days. Being a bit of a golfing traditionalist doesn’t help and I only wish I could have played it years ago before the new club house, this ticks every box. The Dormy house on the side of the course certainly helps and I will go back to try it all over again.

Making your practice REAL As the nights draw in and 9 holes are harder to fit in, the local range becomes a saviour for many. But bad habits are easy to ingrain but with the help of Liam James – Inside Golf’s Instructor he helps with getting the basics right when practising – that, of course, should be taken to the course at the weekend!
STEP 1 - GRIP
A great routine I like to stick to when placing my hands on the club, is holding the club out in front of me parallel with the floor, placing my left hand on first, exposing 2 knuckles of my left hand (pic 1) and my right hand secondly. (pic 2) Once I've done this, I will double check to make sure I feel comfortable and my grip is placed on correctly. (pic 3) When hitting 100+ balls on the range, it's very easy to lose focus on this. This is step 1 of the routine, so make sure you double check before each shot.

STEP 2 - INTERIM TARGET
Find an interim target 2 to 3 feet in front of the mat – It’s so easy to overlook this during practice as you are normally hitting from a square range mat, to targets positioned perfectly in line with the hitting bays. It is easier to line the club up to something 3 foot away than to a target 150 yards plus. Look at the world’s best golfers – standing behind the ball finding an interim target, aligning the club to this and then they are ready to hit the shot. Alignment sticks are as important as your clubs when at the range. Help to align your club and body correctly during each practice session. Once you have repeated this a few times, take the alignment sticks away and aim at some targets scattered around the outfield on your local range (pic left).
STEP 3 - PRACTICE SWING
Why? Because they have seen the Professionals on television do the same. But what should this do for us? What should we be looking for when taking a practice swing? Everyone is slightly different at this part of the routine; some players prefer not to take one, but this should be the step in the routine that prepares us for hitting the shot we are faced with. Nick Faldo always said he played with 1 or 2 swing thoughts each round of golf he played, so the practice swing is a chance for us to rehearse or pay some attention to that simple swing key you've been given from your last lesson. STEP 4 - SETTING UP
Now we have the club selected, the practice swing is done and we have picked our target, it’s now time to set up and hit. It’s important to pay attention to the order in which we do things, one common fault amongst amateurs is setting their stance first before the club has even been grounded behind the ball, in doing so, their distance away from the ball varies each time and they cant get comfortable from shot to shot. Firstly - align the club face to your interim target, right foot forward (picture) and then take your stance. Repeat this time after time and now you have a consistent setup, ready to go.

oving down the coast and just under an hour from Faro Airport is Lagos – not the top of the hit list for many golfing tour operators as many golfers heading to The Algarve head for Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago/ Vale do Lobo regions. But surely its time to look further afield and open your horizons to what else The Algarve has to offer.
Moving away from tourist areas on the central Algarve life does become a little less hectic with an excellent choice of courses, hotels and some wonderful restaurants – what else do you want from a Golf Trip? Ok the bars maybe not as lively as those in Vilamoura Marina but Lagos has its own vibrant night-life and some wonderful bars and clubs to chose from.

Only 10 minutes from the centre of Lagos and is a dream of a golfing destination. 27 Holes with great practice facilities – one day might not be enough! Each ninehole loop – Alvor, Lagos and Praia - has its own feel and challenge and if the wind blows they become an even greater test of golf. The Practice area is everything you need to get warmed up, 300 yards in length and tees at both end with real greens to aim at and bunkers to avoid. Clubhouse is totally adequate with a decent menu for drinks and food but with wonderful panoramic views over the course. The Pro-shop is limited but you’re here to play golf not shop! Wonderful welcome by all at the club and we can’t speak highly enough of this Course and is a must play for anyone visiting this part The Algarve. Espiche Golf
Don’t knock it until you have tried it! This is our “hidden Gem” 10kms from Lagos centre but well signposted it is worth the visit 100%. The welcome from Pauline and Ana was like welcoming an old friend into their house, it has that feel. Pictures alone may not do this course justice and at 6411 yards off the back tees many may feel its not worth the visit but with a wonderful clubhouse overlooking the course and the Gecko Restaurant offering the best Fish and Chips this side of Grimsby (seriously you have to book on a Friday for the fish and chip special) the restaurant is worth a visit just on its own. Details ●● 18 holes measuring 6400 yards from the white tees and 5500 yards for the ladies. ●● Green fees from €55-€85 depending on time of year, special deals available at certain times of the year check with the course.
Boavista
Is on the outskirts of Lagos. Not sure where to start with Boavista if honest. Wonderful clubhouse and a great menu with a wonderful terrace overlooking the 18th. Driving Range was closed and looked like it had been for a while. This is a Golf resort with members who live on site and there was definitely a nice “buzz” about the place. The Course was in good condition albeit a bit dry but it was nearly 40 degrees so fair point. It carries a feel of being a resort course – worth a visit if you are looking for a game of golf but don’t build your itinerary around this course! Details ●● 18 holes measuring 6700 yards from the white tees and 5150 for the ladies. ●● Green fees from €65-€96 depending on time of year, deals available with accommodation. ●● Buggies available.

lying up to Edinburgh on a cold July morning (where have our summers gone?) from Birmingham airport I was wondering if I had packed enough cold weather gear for golf in Scotland? Didn’t need to worry, as on landing the sun was shining, maybe a bit chilly but excitement was in the
air with so many other golfers all over the airport. Golf in Scotland has to be on any golfer’s bucket list but not just St Andrews. On leaving the airport (it was a scrum at the car hire centre) it took me just over 45 minutes to get to the afternoon golf and my overnight accommodation at Archerfield’s

A wonderful golfing complex with 36 holes and some of the best practice facilities I have seen in a long time. I was playing the Dirleton Links for many the number 2 course. It’s a challenging golf course with some wonderful golf holes but for me not a true links, but don’t let this take it away, this is a golf course you want to play. The changing rooms well you could move in – sofas, TV and food, what else do you need? The clubhouse is exceptional, the shop is a retail shop where you check in for your golf – not a Pro-shop as we know it. The lounge, bar and restaurant would just fit into a par 3 – it is huge but nicely broken up with sofas, and tables. Members were there in abundance on a Sunday afternoon and the club had a lovely feel about it. Took a buggy around Fidra Links and this is a mix of links and pines and a totally different feel to Dirleton. Breakfast was a superb start to the day and should not be missed. The catering was not expensive and was of a good standard. You would not be disappointed with a few days here just make sure you play both courses! Details Dirleton Links. ●● Gents par 72, 6946 yards
The Renaissance Club
This is one of the most exclusive golf clubs in the UK & I and is renowned the world over – sadly I didn’t get to play as was already heading elsewhere but had a tour of the course and all I can say is WOW. Yes, it is exclusive and they want it to remain that way – so how can you play? One Time Experience at ‘The Renaissance Club’ is what it says – your one-time opportunity to play and stay if you choose (and why wouldn’t you?) but you won’t get a second chance unless you become a member. Parkland/Links Course. This is the course that we have all experienced when being away – never heard of it, website looks ok. This to me was a MUST 100% play course. Its everything you need as part of a weekend away – tough testing course that doesn’t feel or look hard but plays as a Par 68 at 6260 yards and you know about it. I had the pleasure of playing with 3 members who gave me lines off the tee and helped with the putting and I had a blast. The Clubhouse, changing rooms and Pro-shop are full of charm and you can only imagine the fun that is had over a weekend fiddle with the members. This is a member’s course where they are proud of what they have and are happy to share. I will definitely go back. Gullane 1
A true links if there was ever one. In Scotland you can tell the popularity of a course by the tour groups and the buses parked outside, I counted 4 buses when I arrived, some picking up and some dropping off. The thing is they had all come from St Andrews to play Gullane and two of the groups were coming back to play Muirfield. It’s over 90 minutes driving with no traffic. That alone tells you how much golfers want to play this course. Clubhouse overlooks the first tee and putting green and serves a wonderful array of lunch items again at a reasonable price. The Pro-shop is around the corner and is a separate entity to the course. Gullane Golf Club hosted the 2015 Scottish Open and it is back in 2018. Slightly different set up but you can understand why they are coming back. You stand on the 3rd tee and you have 350 years of history to look at, this is a course where you have to take in the views but don’t let it distract you from the course. It’s tough when the wind blows and if you have made the back 9 with a good card in your hand you are doing well. It only gets tougher. I cannot remember enjoying a round of golf so much – the fact I played well may have something to do with it but I came off the course with a big smile and headed to the bar to reflect on what a great golf course I had just played.
Dunbar
Link’s on the Sea. My expectations were very high for Dunbar after one of the magazine course reviewers has stated it was probably the best course he had ever played – some statement. Arrived early morning with the rain coming in horizontally (remember this is July - the statement on the website that it has a reputation for abundant sunshine came back to haunt me!) and then hit the clubhouse for a morning Tea and Toast. Changing rooms leave a bit to be desired but the clubhouse was very welcoming. Wonderful Pro-shop right next to the first, some great stock in the shop and a wonderful welcome. A gentle start couple of Par 5’s and a par 3 - but does that change when you get to the 4th tee, it feels like one slip and you are in the sea, you’re teeing off with the waves literally crashing the rocks behind you. I really enjoyed this course and loved the feel of the layout. The greens were tricky but fair, and you can understand why it’s used as an Open Qualifier course. HOW THE GPS SYSTEMS WORK Why do you need a GPS system for golf – I know where I am going, I know how far I hit the ball and it’s my own course?
Let’s take these individually: I know where I am going Of course you do, you’re playing 18 holes of golf (generally) few par 3’s a lot of par 4’s and the odd Par 5. But when did you last use a GPS to help your course management? You have the information the Pro’s have, how far is the bunker, the hazard? Now you can plan – example - playing a Par 5 you have hit a good drive and you have 270 yards left, you have been hitting your wedges well about 110/115 so let’s leave that yardage - hit a 6 iron (or whatever you feel you need to hit) 160/155 yards. Now that’s course management.
Really know how far you hit it? Most golfers believe they hit a 7 iron 150 yards - is that with 135 carry and 15 yards of run or do you fly it 150 yards? So playing a Par 3 it’s 155 yards, well it’s not a 7 iron if you have a bunker at 140 and only carry a 7 iron 135 - use the yardages and the stats that many of the GPS systems now give you to work out your club distances.
Yes it’s your own course But we all love to go play somewhere else and this is where a golf GPS comes into its own – how many times have you gone away and played great golf? Maybe it’s something to do with the info on the GPS you have actually looked at it and acted on it, great for blind shots and distances from the wrong fairway – we have all been there!

So, is it a watch or handheld? Personal choice and lower handicap golfers will use either a watch or handheld WITH a range finder (see next month’s edition) especially for those shots 150 yards in when they need more accuracy. My choice – have always been a handheld until I did this review, I still like my handheld but having the watch as a last minute check and being part of my pre-shot routine has become a really good habit – you have your distance, couple of practice swings, check the distance – then commit. It has made a difference to the quality of my strikes.
NOW SOME TECHIE STUFF: Do you really know how the GPS systems on our watch or on the handheld really work? Courses are mapped by satellites as part of aerial photography many of the companies we have reviewed then take these maps and add them to the course library. When you switch your device on 4 or more satellites will pick up your location and from the mapping system will give you yardages to greens, hazards and other parts of the golf course. Fairly basic – unless changes are made to the course! A new bunker added, a new tee or even a lake added. So unless new photography has been used the course map will be out of date so check the yardages. Contact the company to request course changes. SkyCaddie do something slightly different and probably why you have a yearly payment. In the UK they have SkyCaddie Steve who walks and maps every course in the UK (and Europe) so use ground mapped data to give them what they believe is the most accurate yardage available. As a SkyCaddie user you can send them updates about your course and when “Steve” is in the area he will come and update the course information.
Our view and I think it is important here for readers to know how we work: We are not paid to review products, we have requested products to review – some have supplied. We have then spoken to golfers who use the product and got honest answers from real golfers like you and me for other products we could not test personally. I like the handheld but will be switching to a watch for a time to see how I get on with it. If you use GPS as a guide to help with your course management all the products we have reviewed work and work well. If you need something that you know is as close to 100% accurate as can be and happy to pay a yearly fee - there is only one route to go.
Question - do GPS systems speed up play or not? I guess they have to, takes away the pacing of yards from the 150 marker, what’s the carry etc. It’s all there on your wrist or in your hand.
BUT we are all different some like a handheld others a watch. nside Golf Magazine are excited to introduce a new up and coming talent in UK junior golf from Cannock, Staffordshire. Jamie started playing the sport at the sprightly age of just 4 years old being introduced to the game through his Grandad. His natural swing soon got noticed by the club Pro’s and he was invited to attend the Chase Junior Academy. Jamie was soon playing in junior comps and growing into the sport with ease up to the age of six until sadly his Grandad took to ill health and had to give up golf, without his Grandad at the club Jamie turned towards Junior football where he also excelled. Now moving on 6 years he has recently decided now is the time to get back out onto the range and course and has returned to his old club and taken up his lessons again with his original Head PGA Pro Tom Cheetham. This with taking Golf as part of his academic GCSE’s, and already taking part in up to twenty two competitions this year. This year Jamie was invited to play as part of an adult golf team at Brocton Golf Club in Staffordshire for a charity golf tournament and also took part in the

‘Steve Benton’ Charity Golf Day in support of the County Air Ambulance ‘Help Appeal’ at the Forest of Arden back in July this year, Jamie also had a great result in this year’s Pro-Am competition at the Chase Golf Club in Staffordshire where he came in a respectable seventh place as one of only three juniors playing on the day eliminating even some of the Pro’s. With his full handicap being reduced to 24 in a matter of months, and due to be chopped again, Jamie has his sights set on attending the 2018 Portuguese Junior Masters in February and Rob Rock's 2018 Junior Tour. It seems Jamie is a perfectionist when it comes to the game and can be found daily after school either up the driving range or on the course sharpening his techniques. Jamie has some big plans within the sport and we are confident he will reach these goals and much more. You can watch a great example of Jamie’s talent on You tube. Keep your eyes out for this young man, the future is looking very bright for Jamie Obee and it is going to be exciting following this young British golf talent. BIG Plans for 2018
Plans are to expand the Main Tour, 18 holes and the 9 Hole events to 4 events across the Midlands. The mini tour will be a series of 9 hole events- aimed at Juniors Under 12 who don’t have handicaps but play a bit of golf and want to play in a “grown-up” golf event. There will be various age categories- Under 12's, Under 10's, Under 8's, Under 6's and a category for Juniors who are Under 12 but have a handicap. Natalie Clarke is the event organiser making sure the events have a relaxed atmosphere and the kids have a lot of fun. The grand final will be played at Beeston Fields where all prizes will be presented.

Rob has always been a great supporter of junior golf and the Junior tour will only get bigger and better. The Robert Rock Junior Golf Tour started in style August 2016 with over 50 kids attending a Single event at Beeston Fields Golf Club in Nottingham. With pressure from the kids and parents a second event was hosted in October 2016. After seeing the success of these two events, there came their decision to run a Junior Tour over the Midlands. Each event has an 18 hole competition for all juniors with handicaps of 28 and less for Boys and 36 and less for Girls. The boys play in Under 18 and Under 16 categories. Running along the 18 hole event is a 9 hole event, this is for all juniors who have handicaps of 36-54 for girls and 29-54 for the boys. They play a Stableford event off their handicaps, this tour was aimed to encourage the younger juniors to play in events while still playing in official handicap events. There is an order of merit running along the 3 events for 2017, the winner from each category Under 18's, Under 16's, Girls and the 9 hole handicaps will experience the chance to play 9 holes with the European Tour Winner Rob at the end of the year at Sutton Coldfield Golf Club. There are also fantastic individual prizes for a variety of achievements on the day and a welcome present for each participant in attendance.

With the average age of golf club membership rising, the number of “ageing” golfers in the UK is rising and one association has embraced this and over the last 17 years has seen its membership rise to over 500 active members playing regional and national events that remain very competitive.
The United Kingdom Senior Golf Association (UKSGA)
The UKSGA offers competitive scratch golf for golfers of 55 years and over. With a Handicap of 7 or better, you are invited to join the UKSGA which will allow you take part in Regional and National Scratch competitions, which take place throughout the season, on quality golf courses around the United Kingdom and are often 2 day 36 hole competitions. There is an annual Order of Merit that results in a leaderboard which is used to select UK Seniors (55-69 years) & Masters (over 70 years) teams to play against 22 other European countries, with opportunities to play in Finland and Portugal for Order of Merit winners in 2017. GOT A PLAN?
Do you have to organise your Company Golf Day, The Charity golf event or a weekend away for the boss and some clients?
E

Location, Location Cannot stress this enough. No point playing a great golf course if half the clients are flying in and it’s a nightmare to get to and from the airport, they will say no!
Courses that work are: Close to Motorways, near airports and if guests are staying will have a good hotel. We see so many well organised golf days fall foul because the location of the course is not right, even if the CEO/MD is a member his (or hers) weekend course may not work for the company golf day. Look at your clients and pick somewhere that works to get the maximum number of golfers turning up on the day – last minute cancellations happen but let’s not give them another excuse.
Food and Drink Let’s be honest most golfers are led by their stomach which is why the 19th hole is so important so even if you are not a golfer been tasked with the day you can still taste the food and make sure drinks are not silly price – this is where the budget can get hit!
What else do you need to know to organise and host a great golf day? Weather and plan early – booking the day in the quiet times with a golf course may seem a way of stretching the budget but March or June – June will always win. Set your date early and send “save the date” invitations even if you are still negotiating the venue at least this way you can get a feel for numbers before committing and having to pay dreaded cancellation charges!
Team event or individual If you have a few “only play twice a year golfers” but they are your largest client – play a team event, if you know you have serious golfers play an individual competition, but either way be prepared for a long day. Remember Food & Drink! Half way hut or make sure you have a
buggy with refreshments – snacks and sandwiches work fine with a choice of drinks.
Signage Make sure everyone knows it’s your golf day – banners on the tee, staff wearing branded clothing, let everyone know that you are hosting the day.
Gifts and Prizes Remember your client may be attending 4 or 5 golf days a year - get the above right but don’t then give out cheap gifts or prizes. Be up to date with equipment, make sure it’s not last year’s model that’s been discounted or even a product that has been discontinued – it happens and clients see this as a reflection on you.

amateurs loved the adjustability of the weight and lie angle of RX range. Anthony, Michael and Barry (Millride, Roehampton and The Berkshire Golf Clubs respectively) were stopping at Beau as part of a golfing trip heading up North and they certainly liked the putters and once used to the weight and a few amendments from Paul @ Cure Putters were holing a lot of putts. The Ladies from The Nottinghamshire Golf Club – Steph (was her birthday day out), Alison, Aileen and Bernie enjoyed the fact that you can alter the weight and lie and very quickly you have a custom fitted putter! Liam – assistant Pro, was holing putts from the minute he found his model CX2, already a good putter he did like the roll and how it felt. Was hard to get him to try others in the range and as much as they got the ball in the hole kept going back to the CX2. Jason – member of Beau, was more of
a fan of the CX3 he liked the way it looked behind the ball and lets be honest if it doesn’t look good you are going to struggle holing putts. Helen, our fitness expert, has some tips for the first tee warm up’s during the winter months and Liam our Inside Golf Instructor will be talking about what breaking a tee with your driver means and helping to get those extra yards we all strive for? Fitness and good instruction = good golf! The European Tour starts coming to a close with the Italian Open, Andalucia Valderrama Masters and the WGC-HSBC Champions event in China before the last 3 events of The Rolex series kick in with Turkey, South Africa and Dubai with over $22m in prize money still up for grabs in the last 3 events alone! The seniors year is nearly over but is back for one more event in the UK at the Marriott Forest of Arden 20-22nd October – ticket details will be available on the website soon. Q school for the 2018 European tour is well underway and by Mid November a group of golfers will be embarking on a new Chapter of their young (for many) lives. Richard Mansell who has recently turned Pro is going to give us an in-depth interview on the life of being a wannabe tour star and we wish him all the best in his ambition in making through to the finals of Q school. Follow his progress on the website. Ladies European Tour 6 events to finish the year off with some serious travelling ahead with France, China, India & Dubai being a few places they are heading to, ending the season on a high. Very close at the top of the LET ranking with Anna Nordqvist and In-Kyung Kim leading the way and our own Georgia Hall lying in 3rd place. Q school for the ladies starts soon and again we wish them all the best.
Following on from GPS we will be looking at and reviewing range finders and Golfing apps and gadgets that take our game on to the next level, as well as destroying the myths about how far we actually hit a golf ball.
Calling all societies – we will be working with golf clubs all around the country and overseas with best deals for your golfing trips and days out. Already we have over 50 societies that are registered with Inside Golf with many starting to send us reviews on golf courses they play. What better recommendation or not, than another society visiting the course and telling us what they think, this will be part of the next release with the website but we are happy to receive reviews from all societies telling us where they have played and what they thought.
