WELCOME TO INSIDE GOLF – STEVE BEDLOW An interesting first month with the magazine being launched and some serious miles in the car and work continuing on the website – www. insidegolfmag.com Engagement has been massive with a lot of entries to win the Cure Putter. Congratulations to Katherine Ivall Winner of the Cure Putter competition. We have been pleased with some great comments on the first edition so thank you and we really appreciate the input for future features. We are certainly well looked-after for the next few months but please any ideas on features you want to see covered in the magazine please send them over – mail@insidegolfmag.com Visiting the Dunhill Links was a fabulous experience and we look forward to going to many more European tour events in 2018. Tyrrell Hatton’s golf was superb all weekend and him playing with Jamie Dornan (50 Shades of Grey – fame) certainly bought a new following to golf. The Inside Golfs’ Twitter account went into melt down with over 70,000 impressions and requests for more photographs, sorry Tyrrell not of you.

We all have not so good days! Welcome Received
Location Yes, most cars/phones have Sat Nav but there is nothing better for a visitor to the course to see a sign giving them either directional or mileage. Also, a few signs to say the course is coming up 150 yards on the left or right – appreciate it’s not easy and permissions are needed but think about the visitor. Welcome Received Incredible how many welcomes you get that are like a script “Good morning – please sign in the visitor book, code for the changing room door is…” Let’s make an effort - these are customers coming into your club, a smile costs nothing. Be sociable they may even buy something! Practice Facilities Appreciate space can be limiting for many but let’s make sure putting green pace is similar to course, nets are maintained but visitors need to know before they arrive what to expect. The local driving range may be worth a stop on the way!
Course Yes, the most important part of any golf day and it is what it is sometimes, the good, the bad and the ugly – but a review is a review. Personally, I like Links courses that are not overly manicured and look the part of the land, others like fairway definition we all have our preferences and we can only say what we see. But no excuses for a course that wants a green fee but then can’t mow the tees, water new laid grass or give the course some TLC! Club House How does it feel as a visitor, are you treated as a member, is there a good menu selection, do the members talk to you. We have all been to courses and left saying the course was lovely but the food was overpriced and no one spoke to us. As part of our reviews we will say it how it is – don’t take offense.

Location: 4/5 The Berkshire is in a rural location about 10 mins from the M25. This is both a positive (it’s accessible) and negative (M25 do we need to say anymore?) Welcome Received

Welcome Received: 5/5 The well-stocked and classy pro-shop (Berkshire-branded dog collars at £20, anyone?) always gives a friendly welcome. Similarly, the elegant clubhouse is equally welcoming, with well-bred chaps always ready with a quip about something or other.
Welcome Received: 4/5 The welcome in the pro shop was genuinely friendly. We were well looked after, and offered all we needed, including good old fashioned course maps.
Practice Facilities: 5/5 Excellent practice ground; undulating putting green; and also a chipping facility
Practice Facilities: 4.5/5 The practice facilities were first class, and right on the doorstep of the clubhouse.
Club House: 5/5 Elegant and friendly. We visited on a Saturday morning and enjoyed a £6.50 English breakfast including excellent fried-bread and complimentary coffee overlooking the Blue Course’s challenging par 3 opening hole.
Club House: 4/5 The clubhouse was a little on the small side for a championship course, however, again the welcome was first class. The choice of food excellent and well prepared, the changing facilities upstairs were excellent, but again I feel a little small. Though a lot of people would probably be staying at the hotels locally.
Courses: 5/5 The Berkshire has two excellent ‘Top 100’ courses: the Blue and the Red. Both are equally as good. One will be played at 2-ball pace; the other 3- or 4-ball pace. The club varies which format plays on which course.
Course: 4.5/5 Apart from hole 1, straightforward par 4, and hole 18, which just seems to be there to get you back to the clubhouse, the remaining 16, are tough, well crafted and challenging & more than make up for the first and last. There are not a lot of bunkers on the course, but the natural contours and the heather laden rough make it very challenging, if you are a bit wayward. The fairways and greens were in fantastic condition.
Stuffiness The Berkshire is old-school British in a friendly and accommodating way. The classic Berkshire ‘look’ would probably be red or green trousers; and a relatively high number of members play accompanied by well-behaved Labradors.
Stuffiness The "club" as we normally associate with the word, in relation to golf club, doesn't seem to exist. This is the definition of a resort facility.
Would you play again Yes. It’s a beautiful, special club, and the fact you have two 18s doubles the variety for members and visitors alike.
Would you play again? Yes if I was up this way or was looking for a weekend away.
Thoughts Have played the course a few times and it’s always a day to mark on the calendar. Once through the entrance gates, it’s a truly special place. If I lived closer and had the finances I would want to be a member here and play every day.

Thoughts The words “scenic” and “challenging” can sometimes be overused, but not of Spey Valley. It is difficult to believe that this gem of a golf course was only opened in 2006, it sits so naturally within the Caledonian Pine forests, river Spey, and The Cairngorm mountains.

Practice Facilities: 3/5 There is a area to practice but more like a field as no targets to aim at – could easily be improved. Small chilling area with members also chipping on to the putting green (don’t tell the greenkeeper!) Practice green superb space outside the clubhouse and reflected the greens of the course.
Club House: 5/5 This was a fun club house with some good banter with the members. Food was excellent and reasonably priced. The views were fabulous from the first floor over the Peak District. Golf course attire – perfect.
Club House: 4/5 It had Prosecco so really should have a 5 but bar was well stocked. Good bar menu that caters for all and stays open from 10am till last member leaves, which is a great commitment to the membership. Sunday Carvery has a great reputation so need to head back – open to visitors.
Courses: 4.5/5 Any course that hand mowers its greens every day goes up in our estimation and the greens were superb, firm, true and fast. A great layout where you have to think about your course management. A well-designed layout with some wonderful golf holes. 5 par 3’s always make it difficult to score well.
Courses: 5/5 The oldest golf course in Norfolk, the ‘home of bogey golf’ is a challenge for not only a beginner golfer but an accomplished one too. I loved it! Great layout, links style fairways, testing bunkers with a few stones which was the only negative of the course (please tell the greenkeeper)
Stuffiness Not at all, members loved to chat and generally a nice feel to the place.
Stuffiness Not at all. The clubhouse could do with a little modernising, but it holds all the true values of a traditional golf course on top of really friendly staff and members! Dress code on the course a bit more relaxed in the clubhouse but still golfing attire.
Would you play again? Yes. Cannot wait to go back and already planning a day out in 2018.
Would you play again? YES! This is a course I can see challenging me time and time again.
Thoughts Harry Colt designed and Mathew Fitzpatrick’s home course, the course was a delight to play, tough opening 4-holes. There are birdies to be had but you need to be on your game with yardages and playing to your ability.
Thoughts I had a great experience. I was excited to hear about developments being made with the women’s and junior section at the club. I applaud any club who are making their facilities accessible to women and juniors after all I’m a mother of junior golfers myself! Unfortunately I didn’t see any lady members on my visit, I’m sure they will be as friendly as the men when I return!

Practice Facilities: 4.5/5 Another course that understands the requirement for good practice space. Driving Range that you can play off the grass from and balls from the pro-shop. Chipping area approx. 60 yards with a few different flag positions. Putting green played and represented the course superbly.
Practice Facilities: 4.5/5 Full practice facilities to get you ready for the test ahead, range with complimentary balls (can hit driver) chipping area with bunkers to practice from and a large practice green that was true and reflective of the courses greens.
Club House: 5/5 A traditional golf club with a relaxed feel, main bar area is Jacket and Tie but other options available where golf club attire works perfectly. Food was great and wellpriced and the home-made cakes will do nothing for any diet. Staff were super helpful and humorous with it.
Club House: 4/5 A traditional golf club that lives on the fact it is an Open Course, even the website has pages on its history. Staff cordial with their approach but food was good and served real ale – so not all bad, except you couldn’t get Chips with the sandwiches...
Course: 4/5 Wonderful day, some very challenging golf holes. Every hole seems to bring a fresh challenge except the heather is everywhere. Greens were true fast and undulating. Good shots were rewarded and bad shots penalised – how golf should be.
Course: 4/5 Definitely a tale of two 9’s. Enjoyed the front 9, back 9 was “bland” but made difficult by the fact it was playing a gale so we enjoyed the challenge of the wind rather than the back 9 holes. Fairways and greens in superb condition considering it was November. Greens were of a speed relating to the weather so spot on for the day.
Stuffiness For some, it might be on the edge of being too traditional but I loved the mix.

Thoughts First time playing and heard some good reports so was very excited to be playing. From the first hole you need your thinking cap on, you are rewarded for good golf but wow miss the fairways or the greens and par is not easy let alone a bogey sometimes. Greens were fab.
Thoughts We had a good day and pleased we made the effort, course was playing super tough with the weather conditions. Would love to play again in the summer as if its this good, now how good will it be? It’s a “Marmite” course I loved it but my playing partner was less impressed and that I feel is how Royal Liverpool or Hoylake as its also known, will always be.

Practice Facilities: 5/5 I could spend all day here, practice chipping areas with bunkers then a large area for every club in the bag. Good putting green with some very testing slopes, good indicator of what lay ahead.
Practice Facilities: 4.5/5 The Academy on site is a great place to get warmed up before playing with a range, 3 chipping areas and a putting green, another putting green in front of the clubhouse.
Club House: 3/5 Spike Bar has been a good addition to the club and gives the place a buzz with golfers and stories of what could have been. Staff behind the bar were serving slowly and the food portions were not great and nor was the quality.
Club House: 4.5/5 Wonderful place and the changing rooms were superb, shame I didn’t get chance to use the Turkish Baths as the bar was calling! Thursday afternoon and the place was busy, always a good sign. Good menu that is what I refer to as “resort priced”. Food looked great and good portions.
Course: 5/5 What a gem, struggled to play the greens but my issue, not the course, some really good golf holes on the course and tested every club in the bag. It’s a true heathland course and played its full yardages – we did play off the back tees so that is always a treat for a visitor.
Course: 4/5 An interesting Layout. First couple of holes you feel you need to score well on, as the course does get tough with having to be on top of your course management and the greens are not easy to read. It feels long from the white tees but is a challenge. Rough was difficult to get out of and not easy to reach the green if you missed the fairway – how it should be.
Stuffiness Not at all, this is a true members golf club and the few we met were very talkative

Thoughts This is a great golfing destination in its own right – 2 x 18 hole golf courses and both as good as each other from what I am told. It’s a good old-fashioned members club that is moving in the right direction and should be on everyone’s must play list.
Thoughts Was interesting to see and play the course as I have heard so much about the course over the years. It didn’t disappoint but has a few holes where you feel they could do more with, 11th and 12th for example with the water being more in play. Deepark off the Blue tees is just shy of 7000 yards, 6500 off the White and 5509 yards of the Red tees.

NICK DOUGHERTY ‘We need GolfSixes, speed golf, and it helps that celebrities are spreading the golfing word showing that golf can be cool. The influence of celebrity, his most nerve-wracking interview (with the legendary Jack Nicklaus) and his pet hates on the golf course are just some of the topics covered with golf commentator and ex-pro, Nick Dougherty. Inside Golf editor Steve Bedlow gets the low down.
N
ick Dougherty is an affable, funny guy who is busy with work and family life. When Inside Golf catches up with him at the fitting location of St Andrews, the golf pro turned Sky Sports presenter has been travelling between here and the States covering the summer season. Nick began his golfing career under the mentorship of British golf hero Nick Faldo. The Liverpudlian turned pro in 2002 and won three times on tour (the Caltex Masters in 2005, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2007 and the BMW International Open in 2009). He retired aged 34 and began his new career as a pundit on Sky Golf. I kick off by asking how the opportunity arose.

“I had been asked but didn’t want to take my eye of what I was doing - playing golf. But I decided to take the opportunity and loved the buzz, especially the comments that I was doing a good job. Everyone loves a compliment!” Tiger Woods was Nick’s first interviewee and he explains that though you might try and plan your questions, you have to respond to the answers and feel the interview. “My mentor, David Livingstone, told me to be patient and do it my way,” Nick explains. “You just want to make sure you are not talking duff, especially when interviewing someone like Tiger!” Tiger Woods was one of those charismatic golfers that helped raise the level of interest in the sport, and Nick

has recently been vocal about the role celebrities could play in raising the profile of the game even further. Talking on his Sky Sports blog, Nick says the involvement of stars like McFly’s Harry Judd and Irish singer (and teen heartthrob) Niall Horan should not be underestimated. He says that Niall’s involvement and love of the game has already attracted that new audience the sport needs. He tells his fans how much he loves the game, and how cool it can be. I wonder if there’s anything else that could be done to improve the image of golf and to increase participation? “The new GolfSixes tournament raised a lot of questions about new formats, and for many, traditional 18-hole tournaments are still the purest form. “But we will always have to look at how we make golf more accessible for everyone - kids especially. We need new formats like GolfSixes, speed golf and celebrities like Niall Horan spreading the word and showing that golf can be cool.” Ever the professional, Nick spends much of his work time getting to know the courses for the events he is covering. He can often be seen on Twitter or live streaming site Periscope walking and talking his followers through them. I ask how important this is for his presenting work. “You can never have enough knowledge leading into an event,” he says, “especially of a course you’ve not been to before or one you don’t know that well. “Walking the course, especially with Periscope, is great as it gives instant engagement with those following and
allows me to understand the course, including the grass types and such, much better. I may have all the knowledge but will only use maybe 10% during the weekend.” Do you plan on who you want to interview or is it dependent on their day? I ask. “It’s a bit of both really. If a guy is having a tough finish to the day he might not be the best frame of mind for an interview, whereas someone who’s had a strong finish may be a better interview. “But the interview has to be relevant and not just a box ticking exercise!” One of Nick’s most memorable interviews, he tells me, was with golf legend Jack Nicklaus. “The interview was set up as part of a series we were doing. It was nerve wracking as he is a legend and even though he’s from a different era, he is still up to date with what is going on and was super knowledgeable. “It was a great day for me and something I will always remember as even off air talking golf he was very insightful into the game of golf. He is still a legend.” Golf has undeniably changed since Nick turned pro back in 2001, there’s more money in the game now and styles of coaching have evolved, but I wonder just how much the game has changed from Nick’s perspective. He says that changes have been massive, especially when it comes to the money involved. “But maybe biggest change is the technology behind the new golf clubs and balls. More guys are challenged week in week out as clubs are more user-friendly
but the courses are also getting longer. “And the “teams” behind the top players are now much bigger with fitness coaches and nutritionists. The golf coach and manager are only a part of it!” Next, I ask Nick about American tour events compared with European tour events. I wonder whether he is better looked after in the US as a presenter, or does it just become a case of “another hotel and another golf course”? “I love the States and the whole lifestyle. The events are bigger, the crowds and the money they play for is huge. I could easily up sticks and move to the US.” To finish the interview, I shoot some quick-fire questions at Nick, and start by asking him who he’d pick if he could have a four-ball match with anyone. “Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, especially in their prime but also, and this is a curve ball, Will Smith. He seems like a great guy to hang out with and have fun with, as well as being a great actor. (Rumour has it he plays off 15 but is a bit of a shark Nick, so be careful!) Next Nick tells me that if he could play one more round as a professional golfer it would be at Kingsbarns Golf Links near St. Andrews. Slow play, cheating and discourteous golfers who show no etiquette make up his top pet hates, and what he loves most when not working is just playing the family man and spending time with wife (and fellow golf commentator) Di and the kids.

– Ben Hogan once said 'There is no similarity between golf and putting - they are two different games - one is played in the air and the other on the ground'. You Drive for show Putt for dough we have all heard the expression. BUT we “happily” (maybe not so happily, but we do) pay £250.00-£299.00 for the latest driver to give us another 10 yards and less of this and more of that but do we like paying £250.00 + for a putter – not in the conversations I hear in the club house! My round on Sunday 29th October 17 @ Beau Desert shot an 81. Driver used 13 times, putter 33 times plus a couple of times off the edge of the green, over 41% of my scoring with a putter in my hand. So in theory should I pay 2.5 times for a club that I use more often? NO, but I want to make sure I have the right putter and I guess that should come without a price consideration! The choice of putters in the market place is extreme ranging from Scotty Cameron and Bettinardi putters at £300.00 + to Cleveland & Odyssey at less than £100.00. You have Blades, mallets, mid-mallets and Counterbalanced putters – so which one? Go and spend some serious time with a club fitter, club pro and have a full putter fitting when its used over 40% of your shots on the course, its worth spending some time. Red is the colour for many, especially one of the most popular putters “on tour” is the TaylorMade Spider. I say “on tour” remember this is their living they practice more than the average Joe plays golf and they have the choice of every putter on the market (depending on contract) that can be personally adapted to their individual requirements. So don’t just follow what is happening on the TV, have a look at the options available.

Getting fitted for a putter – where and how? There are very few dedicated putting centres in the UK – Some of the online companies have on their website’s 11 different brands with 182 different types of putter, so where do you start? Find a good golf Pro to help you understand your putting style. This is the hard part – he may only carry 3 or 4 brands in the pro-shop but you know there are many others you want to try! Do you go to one of the large retail shops that carry 11 brands but then you are putting on astro turf! It’s a long process but the fact it makes up for 40% plus of your round of golf its worth spending some time on. This is not an impulse purchase.

THE MASTERS Bucket list for many and what an experience. We talk to the team at Executive Golf Tours (www.executivegolftours.co.uk) who every year take golfers from around the globe to the Masters From the moment you walk through the gates (be warned its airport security and there is a prohibitive list if items that you cannot take into the course) you know you have arrived somewhere special, the practice area in front of you and off to the left the TV studios. But who wants to spend time looking at a practice area – where is the course? Trust me you will come back and watch the guys on the range it is something special in its own right. So you walk past the merchandise
facility and then you are on course, 100 yards or so down from the first tee. So where do you start – depends which day, if you are fortunate to be there for a few days and one of the days includes the Wednesday and the par 3 event, head over to the back of the first and 10th tees and have some fun watching the players, the kids & the caddies playing the Par 3. You can also take your camera into the course on a practice day so get the pictures that will last a life time, maybe even a selfie with one of the celebrities you see about the course! We have all watched the Masters from a young age with the dulcet
tones of Peter Allis before Sky took golf coverage to a new level and yet when seeing the course for the first time in real life it looks like a place you have never seen before – it’s not flat, the bunkers are bigger and deeper than what you see and the 10th doesn’t just go left, it turns left and could be a ski slope. Start at one (or 10) depending who is on the course and walk all 18 holes – if here for 2 days do 9 one day and 9 the next it’s a tough walk especially if the sun is out and the beer tent comes a calling. Not going to say any more about the course you have to visit and you need to discover Augusta your way, it’s worth the trip.
Where to stay - Augusta or further afield? Some people say staying in Augusta is boring there is nothing to do, but I don’t agree. The bars and restaurants are full of golfers, caddies and the odd player! There are live bands to keep you amused and the atmosphere in many of the drinking establishments is good natured and for the Brits you are greeted with much enthusiasm, especially after they won the Ryder Cup in 2016. Augusta though is not cheap and hotel prices are multiplied for the week of the golf sometimes by 2 or 3 times the normal rate. A 2-star motel in town may well be over £300 a night, if only there for a couple of nights it works, but longer we need to offer you an alternative.

THE MASTERS | 17 Columbia – 60 miles away but one interstate all the way to Washington Road. Our base for the week where hotel rates are more reasonable and evenings are still busy with some good golf courses on the doorstep. Depends on how many days you are attending the golf and how many nights you are in town for – you decide how much comfort you need.
What else can you do? – well the bucket list can keep getting ticked. Kiawah Island (Ryder Cup and US PGA Venue) and Charleston are just over 2 hours away. With Liam James - PGA Golf Professional A question I’m often asked during lessons is “What are the differences between an iron swing and a driver swing?” - during this article, I hope to clear up any confusion between the two, gain you a few yards off the tee and even help make that iron strike even crisper! So what are the differences? Well, the principles are what separates them, we are simply trying to hit ‘up’ on the driver and ‘down’ on the iron, let me explain more and give you some simple tips that will help.
Making your practice REAL As the nights draw in and 9 holes are harder to fit in, the local range becomes a saviour for many. But bad habits are easy to ingrain but with the help of Liam James – Inside Golf’s Instructor he helps with getting the basics right when practising – that, of course, should be taken to the course at the weekend!
DRIVER
The first big difference between the two, an iron shot we are looking for the club to enter the floor after the ball and with a driver we are certainly not. One key thing we hear in today’s game with help of Trackman Technology is some of the longest drivers in the game, launching the ball high and hitting the ball on the ‘up’ swing. Two ways to help you do this, first of all a tendency I see with golfers is for them to position the ball too far back in the stance for a driver, one result of this is a downward strike, resulting in lower launching drives that might not travel very far in the air. If you look at the picture 01, the correct ball positions for higher launching drives is just inside my left heel, you will also see a slight tilting of my spine and shoulders away from the target. Now I’m set in the correct position and ready to go. Drill - One simple but effective drill you can use to help you gain the sensation of hitting up on your drives, is simply place a sleeve of 3 golf balls 6 inches in front of a tee (practice swing only). Take your new address position and make some practice swings, trying to clip the top of the tee and miss the sleeve of balls placed in front (picture 02). Make sure you do this in practice swings only, once you have made the adjustments to your setup and practiced this drill, hit a few shots and see what happens!

IRONS
IRON SHOTS - So now for my iron shots, how are we going to achieve that crisp, compressed strike everyone is searching for? And how does this differ from my driver swing? As I mentioned earlier, the idea of well struck iron shots and consistency is the club striking the floor in the correct place time after time, take a look and see how the setup may vary for an iron shot from a driver. Ball position - (picture 03) Jack Nicklaus famously mentioned he did not vary his ball position with his iron shots, he maintained the position 1 golf balls width inside his left heel for each shot he played. I like to keep things simple too. So as you can see, the ball is positioned slightly further back than a driver would be, with my hands slightly ahead of the ball at address, something which is important when it comes to hitting a crisp iron shot.
Drill - (pictures 04 & 05) A great drill I like to use to help compress my irons, is placing an alignment stick or smaller object 5-6 inches behind my clubhead (practice swings only). My aim through this practice swing, is for my club to strike the floor target side of this object. If I can do this successfully, my weight has transferred into my front foot and I have a achieved that descending strike that is crucial for good iron shots. If your striking behind this object, (picture reference) you’ll see the difference in my weight shift. People’s biggest tendency can be to lean back, and try to ‘help’ the ball up into the air, in turn lead to hitting a long way behind the ball with not much distance.

parts of the UK, including London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds/Bradford and both Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland. Also from further afield including Faro, Seville and Alicante. There is no mistaking that Cornwall is on the Map for golf – but don’t tell everyone.

If you are looking for a top, top golf course this is right up there so much in fact that it is seen as one of the top 10 courses in the UK and it doesn’t disappoint. If you are lucky and get to play the course in decent weather, you will be blown away (not literally) by the views across to Padstow and Hawkers Cove. The Course is St Enodoc’s Church course, a James Braid design dating back to 1907 (some changes by Braid took place in 1935) and some say the opening par 5 1st is one of the easier holes on the course but this only brings trepidation for what follows, as it looks tough as hell and plays tough with sand dunes both sides of the fairway. Playing to your handicap here cannot be sniffed at and if the wind does get up make sure you have scored early. St Enodoc has a fine reputation and on playing the course it is 100% justified. At 378 yards par 4 the 6th hole doesn’t on paper seem to be anything to worry about until you see the bunker waiting for you. With a bunker called the Himalaya it leaves you in no doubt this is a course with hidden and not so hidden dangers, you need your A+ game to get round this beast. When you realise the par is 69 and the course record only stands at 65 – this tells its own tale. Trevose Golf Club
This is another true links golf course where you have to be careful that taking in the scenery doesn’t distract you from what is in front of you – 18 holes of pure test for any golfer. The greens like many links golf courses are on the larger side and were quick, so make sure you have your clubbing correct. Fairways again are generous but placement of bunkers, understand new bunkers have been added over the years to tighten up the course a little. You get to the 4th and the white horses of the Atlantic can be heard in the background, this is a golf hole that stays in the memory. The first 10/11 holes are exceptional and the finishing hole coming right up to the clubhouse is a wonderful place to finish. Holes 12-16 although good holes, are not exceptional but are good scoring holes. Maybe being spoilt on the first 11 holes is unfair on the others! Opened for golf in 1925 and designed by H Colt it is in good company – Augusta, Sunningdale, Muirfield all designed by the Colt Family. Mullion Golf Club
The most southerly golf course in the UK and when playing across the cliffs it feels like it! Its not long at just over 6000 yards but don’t get that feeling it will be easy, it’s a par 70 and will test you every time you have a club in your hand! It’s been described as “unorthodox” not sure why as it is stunning and well worth a visit. Holes 6- 13/14 are a great test and if you play them well you will score well. A few blind shots but you get that on Links courses. Have to add that everyone without fail were very sociable – I guess they know you have made an effort to get there and want to make sure you enjoy your day. If you don’t like travelling once you have arrived there are a couple of recommended Golf Resorts with golf courses on site: St Mellion - arguably the most recognised with 2 courses, The Nicklaus and Kernow Course both on site and both offering a great challenge of golf. The hotel has a renowned Spa and the restaurant on site offers the full range over 3 different restaurants. The Point – great for groups, with a choice of houses, apartments catering for all group sizes. If you want to mix up the golf and do some surfing whilst here, Polzeath Beach is a short stroll away and renowned for its surf. This is a great place for groups, and families with a Pool, gym on site and a beach 15 minutes away.

Sotogrande was the destination, home to some of the finest golf courses on the Costa del Sol including: Valderrama, Sotogrande, San Roque and Finca Cortesin to name a few. We were told by a few Tour Operators that it’s too exclusive for the UK market and not mainstream, but this is a destination that, if you want to play great courses, you have to visit. We will do the feature in the next edition on Sotogrande but the collapse of Monarch stopped us running the feature as our flight was cancelled and replacement flight prices went so high we could not justify the trip.
So what happened at Monarch and how did it affect you? “Unrest in Turkey badly affected Monarch’s holiday business. A resulting flood of seats
across airlines to its core business in Spain and Portugal meant cheaper fares, which were unsustainable for Monarch.” The fall of the pound left Monarch paying £50m a year more for fuel and aircraft, purchased in dollars” Greybull Capital said to the Guardian Newspaper on the 2nd October 2017. There was not a lifeline to this and at 4am on the 2nd the announcement was made and the largest repatriation of British citizens since the second world war was put into place, over 110,000 passengers were stranded overseas. But what about the 750,000 individuals who had bookings
with Monarch. It was estimated that between 350,000 – 400,000 would be protected by ATOL with others booking with a credit card and in some cases a debit card would eventually get a refund on the flight element, but not other parts of the trip – like hotels and golf. Hotels are paid for, rooming lists are with the hotel. Tee Times are booked even the buggies – so how were you treated by the hotels and courses? Did they agree to transfer bookings to another date (no obligation to do this) or were you left trying to rebook flights that had now doubled in cost?

WHICH GADGET IS RIGHT FOR YOU? Do they actually help, work or make it all a bit too confusing? Walk on to the first tee of any golf club and very soon you will see Smartphones out with Golf Apps, watches that sync to tags in the top of the clubs and an endless selection of others. We have tested a few, spoken to golfers who use them and have reviewed for the magazine and we have spoken to the businesses to get a better idea of what they are trying to deliver. How far do you really hit the golf ball? The Golf shot tracking systems are now available for all and if you are serious about lowering your handicap this has to be the way to go. I was a bit sceptical when using these, as I do like to just get on with it but the detail available after each round actually gives you an honest feedback on how far you actually hit a club and how many fairways you miss – right and left. Be warned you will be looking at your stats for hours! But gives you something to work on when at the range or on the course – it’s like having your own caddy. There a few businesses leading the way in this market: Arccos, Shot Scope and Sky Caddie Arccos have bold statements coming out of the team in the USA-Golfers using Arccos improved their handicap by an average of 2.77 strokes last year (2016) and with the new caddie system they are expecting even better results, so how does it all work? Artificial Intelligence is how? It uses your results and the database behind the system to give you the correct yardage but and this is the really clever part, it gives you the caddies view of “plays like” (this part comes with yearly subscription).

TAGS AND YARDS Arccos 360 So the Arccos 360 is a serious bit of kit – the sensors go into the end of each club and it works with the app on your phone (appStore and Google Play). Over a period of time it automatically records and analyses every shot you hit, with its live tracking and Tour analytics it’s going to allow you to make better decisions with club selection and course management. What we really like – easy to get started, as much data as you want but important for us was the average club distance over a period of time – you will be shocked! What we don’t like as much – it’s not cheap £249.00, from Golf Online, it uses your phone for the App while playing, make sure you are on silent. Do like this product and the stats it gives – planning a winter programme on the greens that I miss with my mid-irons.
Shot Scope We have not tested this product as it’s being updated for 2018 but the initial reports are that it’s a game changer for Shot Scope (SS) from V1, which for many was a great piece of kit and very easy to use. The team behind SS are already taking pre-orders for V2 that takes it all to a new level. A watch with every course downloaded so giving you Front, Middle & Back yardages to help plan the shot ahead. Automatic performance tracking SS V2 tracks every shot you play during your round. The patented ClubSense™ technology allows the wristband to ‘sense’ the tag during the swing so that you can play free from manual input or use of your phone, it discounts the practice swing, a lot of tech going on here. You download your data when you get home or back in the clubhouse. What we like – the price point @ £189.00 (pre-order Price), it acts as a GPS device as well so no separate device, available on IOS and Google Play. Some of the technology being launched in 2018 looks fab. What we don’t like as much – tough as the product is not yet released. We will do a follow up to the review when Shot Scope V2 is released.
Sky Caddie Linx GT We reviewed the watch last month and with the tags attached to the clubs this does give you everything in one place. The accuracy of yardages we believe gives Sky Caddie an edge over many so you trust the yardages coming back to you. It syncs very easily you just have to remember the tapping of each club otherwise it does have a tendency to add a few extra shots on if you go walkabouts looking for golf balls. Easily edited, but be aware. Allows tracking of club distance either during the round or after and gives you accurate yardages for clubs used. What we like – the accuracy of yardages, the data it gives you both on the course and the analytics after. What we don’t like as much – yearly subscription (you have to pay for the accuracy) a bit fiddly to set up courses and account. Price point £279.95 from Golf Online.

The LR7-S has a great scan mode allowing you to view a few different targets for yardages. The slope feature can be switched on or off and has 4 different target modes. Its accurate to a yard and has a range of 880 yards. Price £289.95
Nikon - not a name that everyone associates with Golf but have been producing some very good range finders over the years and the 80 VR collection have taken it another step forward. Coolshot 80i VR (vibration reduction) with a 1000 yard range, its locked on feature gives immediate feedback on the yardages. As you can imagine the Optical performance is superb with a brighter and clear view as you scan for targets. Slope adjusted technology with Hyper read allowing for faster results. olfers play with 13 different full swing clubs of random Mass and Moment of Inertia. These are the two physical properties that affect how a club behaves when swung. Still, these two properties are ignored by the golf industry. The subconscious mind of the golfer thereby has to learn one swing for each club. It also has to tell them apart by waggling the club before swinging it. To swing one club in an efficient and consistent manner is an achievement. To learn thirteen different swings and be able to tell them apart at a subconscious level is next to impossible. Even if the club makers wanted to produce clubs of optimal Mass and Moment of Inertia, it would not be easy to do as the properties of each golfer comes into play as well. The physical properties of each club would have to be optimized for each and every customer.
Brain Maps (Muscle Memory)
It gets worse; it has been found that while growing one brain map, another brain map may shrink. This is because as brain maps are competing for neurons and space (Zumerchik, 2010). For example, by practicing with a 9-iron, the proficiency of the other 12 clubs will drop. The only way to solve this problem is to have one brain map that covers all thirteen full swing clubs.

Rational Golf LLC of Florida has solved the problem by creating an algorithm, named BioMatch, that makes a computer model of the player´s body swinging each of the clubs in the bag. Based on input such as the golfers body mass and height and various properties of the clubs the algorithm calculates how much weight and

SWINGWEIGHT IS OUTDATED – BIOMATCH IS THE FUTURE Met Steve at his studio where after a coffee and a chat he had me hitting a few balls to get warmed up. I was very sceptical at first when you see some of the data but after showing me my dispersion that would have covered a green and quite a few of the hazards around it I realised I needed some help. We went through the “fitting” process and fitted the weight into my 6 Iron – immediate improvement, not quite but after hitting some shots with the weight in the grip we hit the stats again. Now I see the difference – taking away the couple of duck hooks my dispersion area had improved immensely. Now I stood a chance of hitting the par 3! Was sceptical but after playing with the clubs (which were also new, that never helps) I am now seeing a constantly better grouping of balls on the range and looking at my stats my handicap has come down one shot very close to two and the fact I have had my clubs fitting and the BioMatch fitting I am feeling more confident of where the ball is going. enry Saddleton is a six year old golfer from Norfolk, who first became interested in golf when he was still in nappies. His father Aaron, a 5 handicapper says Henry was swinging a club from the moment he could walk but didn’t go on to have his first golf lesson at a club till late in 2016 aged 5. In March this year Henry stormed on to the junior tournament scene with a second place finish in his first ever competition at Cambridge Meridian back in March this year. He went on to have 9/10 top 3 finishes in all competitions, two first place finishes on the British Junior Golf Tour and two first place finishes on the European Junior Golf Tour. “It’s always great to see new faces on the BJGT, we see quite a lot but Henry made quite an impact in his first year on tour. Henry’s got a fantastic game and a wonderful attitude, that has seen him achieve some excellent results this year plus taking home the odd trophy. We’re sure he will benefit from the experience of playing different courses and making new friends, so I look forward to seeing him progress on the BJGT in 2018”. Henry’s greatest achievement of 2017 was winning the Thorpe Hall Junior Open Under 13’s Gross Champion Trophy with a +1 score that was once won by Professional Golfer and European Tour player Matthew Southgate who took to social media to congratulate Henry on his achievement. 2018 will be an exciting year for this young man and his sister as she joins him for her first season on the junior golf tours.

JUNIOR ROUND UP Rob Rock Golf Tour concluded its 2017 season with over 70 juniors playing and enjoying 5 different categories, Under 18’s, Under 16’s, Girls, 9 Hole event for Juniors with 9 hole handicaps and The Mini Tour which is for Juniors who are Under 10, Under 8 and Under 6 without handicaps at Beeston Fields in Nottinghamshire. The standard of the golf was fantastic considering the damp, wet conditions with a few highlights being the winners in the U16 Category; Charlie Dryden, Dyland Dring and Alexei Glass shooting net scores of 64,65 and 67. Other winners on the day: U18’s Jack Sipos, Girls – Imogen Marsland and Abbie Talboys with Jack Meakin and Sebastian Duffield on the 9 hole & Mini Tours event. The Order of Merit Winners from the 3 events in 2017 were: ●● Under 16’s Winner Dylan Dring from Ruddington Grange Golf Club ●● The Girls winner was Ashleigh Critchley from Kettering Golf Club ●● The 9 Hole Handicap Event winner was Jack Sweet from Matlock Golf Club With the three of them receiving a day instruction from Rob Rock. It was great to see over 80 people in the clubhouse for the prize giving and a special thank you must go to the parents of all those playing in the day who take time to support their kids. The 2018 Tour will be expanding to 6 events across the Midlands, dates and venues to follow very soon. Also a big thank you to the Venues- Sutton Coldfield , Ruddington Grange and Beeston Fields for making the Tour and all of the Juniors welcome- 2018 will be a great tour and a wonderful environment for kids to play and enjoy some competitive golf!

t is as explosive as a sprinter out of the blocks or a baseball pitcher pitching his first ball, so why do we have such a standoff attitude when it comes to warming up properly? From the amateur golfer looking sheepish on the back of the range bending & turning with 2 clubs behind his head to the balletic manoeuvres of Miguel Angel Jimenez, we have all had a less than appreciative attitude to their efforts, but who has it right? No question….. those making any form of effort to warm up! A golf swing generates huge force travelling through the body in under a

second so let’s prepare properly and start like an athlete. At inside golf we want to make warming up cool, lose the selfconscious demeanour and give it a go. Below I am giving you 5 warm up exercises that are from the Titleist Performance Institute, these have been invented especially for you the golfer to help you warm up properly and effectively before that all important 1st tee shot that will pave the way for your round. It’s good logical stuff and you can tell your friends from my explanations exactly what each exercise you’re doing and why you’re doing them.

HERE ARE YOUR 5-WARM UP’S 1. Leg Swings Stand tall knees facing forward hold the club for support standing on 1 leg. Swing the opposite leg forward and back from the hip not from the knee. TEACHING TIP: Try to keep the hips level with a quiet/still upper body. Now take the club to the side & swing the leg across the midline. Repeat on opposite leg. REPEAT: 2 sets of 10 on each leg. WHY THIS EXERCISE: Great way to take the hip through different planes.

Hip Hinge with Dissociation lace a light resistance mini band around the knees, take P your feet out to hip width and hold. ut club across your chest at shoulder height, hinge pushing P hips backwards and bend knees keeping the tension on the band, then return to tall stand, in tall standing position rotate shoulders keeping the lower body still. TEACHING TIP: Keep feet pointing forward & sit back with a neutral posture into the hinge.

TEACHING TIP: Keep pelvis level, try not to rock the pelvis or you will just be using momentum, feet facing forward. REPEAT: 5 steps in either direction, 5 sets. WHY THIS EXERCISE: Activation of the muscles that give you stability during your swing, you are definitely going to feel a small ache on the outside of the thigh, known technically as “Pleasurable Discomfort!�

4. 3 Plane shoulder mobility old golf club one hand on the grip and the H other on the club face, keeping shoulders facing front, lift the club to the side of the head to open the shoulder joint and stretch across chest. Repeat at 45 degrees then 90 degrees. Repeat on the other side. TEACHING TIP: Keep shoulders relaxed with no tension in neck or head. REPEAT: 5 sets each side. WHY THIS EXERCISE: We want to open up the shoulder and remind the body that this is an amazing joint and capable of working on multi planes.

5. Back lunge with rotation Step back into a single leg squat & rotate upper body over a stable front leg. TEACHING TIP: Do not allow front or back knee to drop inwards and keep shoulders relaxed. Groups of golfers playing for their enjoyment are known as a Society when numbers grow from the occasional golfing day out or trip overseas and before you know it you have 30 plus golfers and someone is talking about a website! One such group is the UK Bangladeshi Golf Society, formed on October 8th 2017 by a group of golf loving Bangladeshi’s and proud to be the first UK based Bangladeshi Golf Society. With already over 45 members they have had their first event and already have much planned for 2018. Their main objective is to serve the members by organizing great golf tournaments so that the Bangladeshi community can get together from different walks of life and socialise, have fun and compete in a golf events. Malek Majumder says that “Amongst our committee, we have golfers who have been playing the game for many years so have experience running a successful golf society. Additionally, we have in our committee business minded members who are here
to direct us with future expansion and development so that we can reach many Bangladeshis as possible to bring them in to the world of golf.” We look forward to following the UKBGS on their events in 2018 and being a media partner for the society and helping them raise money for the chosen charity Human Relief Foundation.
