DEAR FRIEND
AUCTION PROCEDURES
EVENING EVENTS
Thank you so much for joining us to celebrate the completion of our 11th year and the beginning of our 12th season. This evening we recognize three extraordinary individuals who have had a great impact on SOPAC: philanthropist and Patron Saint of SOPAC, Patti Donovan; community leader and long-time supporter, Matt Glass; and Deputy Majority Leader of New Jersey’s General Assembly, Mila M. Jasey. We are deeply grateful to all three honorees for their support, advocacy, and commitment to our organization.
SILENT AUCTION PROCEDURES
6:00PM – 7:45PM | MAIN LOBBY REGISTRATION WILL CALL COAT CHECK COCKTAILS HORS D’OEUVRES PHOTOS 50/50 RAFFLE PURCHASE
Please read the Silent Auction descriptions carefully, noting any restrictions. SOPAC will not be responsible for auction items not redeemed within the time specified by the donor or within a year. Item descriptions are followed by a value or in the case of particularly unique items, the value is listed as priceless.
Please note that only the amount paid over the fair market value is tax-deductible to the fullest extent provided by law. PLACING A BID:
To place a bid, write your name or paddle number and bid amount on the corresponding bid sheet. Subsequent bids should be placed on the next available line and must raise the bidding by at least the minimum increment for that item as listed on the bid sheet.
Our 11th season was truly remarkable: sold out performances by the Indigo Girls, Donovan, Rosanne Cash, Graham Nash and Oleta Adams and twenty other artists set a record for our burgeoning organization; we significantly strengthened our financial stability and ended the year with a modest surplus for the 4th time in a row; and for the third consecutive year we won the Jersey.com People’s Choice Award for Favorite Small Performing Arts Center in the State of New Jersey. We also won the the Reader’s Choice Award for Best Theatre in the Morris Essex Health & Life Magazine. We served over 7,000 children from 92 schools through our School Performance Series. We had over 1,000 submissions for our young people’s art exhibit, Inspired Minds, featuring the work of Essex County high school students. And we continued to provide music residency programs to students in neighboring communities who have little access to arts instruction and appreciation. As we ramp up our 12th season, we are filled with optimism and excitement about the future of SOPAC; we are expanding and diversifying our Board and our programming, we are strengthening our financial position, and we are committed to ensuring that SOPAC is a community resource that is embraced and treasured.
Once a bid is entered, it may not be removed. CLOSE OF BIDDING:
The last call for bidding will be at 7:30PM. At 7:45PM, the silent auction will close and bid sheets will be collected.
PAYMENT:
All of this is only possible through your support. We are deeply grateful to you for being part of the SOPAC family: for attending our performances, for making contributions to the Center, or volunteering your time and services. We simply could not do it without you. Thank you for making SOPAC your home for the arts in North Jersey. We hope you enjoy tonight’s festivities, and we look forward to seeing you again soon at SOPAC. Sincerely,
Mark E. Packer Executive Director
Please check your email immediately after the show for correspondence from SOPAC indicating the names or paddle numbers of the highest bidders for each auction prize. There will also be a sign posted outside the theater with the highest bidder information. Please pay for and collect your winning prizes in the coat check area by the main lobby exit doors after the performance. Cash, checks, American Express, Visa, MasterCard and Discover will be accepted forms of payment. There are no refunds. Payment must be made the evening of the Gala in order to take the prize home.
If you have any questions, please ask one of the auction volunteers. LIVE AUCTION PROCEDURES
To bid on a Live Auction item, attract the attention of the auctioneer by raising the back of your Program Journal with your paddle number facing him high above your head at the appropriate time. Each bid legally obligates the bidder to pay the bid price in full if his or her bid is deemed final by the auctioneer. Live Auction items may be paid for and collected by the highest bidder in the coat check area by the main lobby exit doors after the performance. See PAYMENT information under Silent Auction Procedures for further information.
PADDLE RAISE PROCEDURES
The auctioneer will announce the start of the Paddle Raise along with the dollar amounts solicited. If you would like to make a donation at any level, please raise your paddle number located on the back of the Program Journal in the air until you hear your number called out loud and recognized by the auctioneer. A spotter will then record your donation. Paddle Raise donations will be processed along with auction items at check out. See PAYMENT information under Silent Auction Procedures for further information.

HONORING PHILANTHROPIST PATTI DONOVAN “It is in giving that we receive.” Patti Donovan truly believes and lives by this quotation of St. Francis of Assisi. Although Patti doesn’t consider herself a philanthropist, she helps people and worthy causes that need help to survive, get over a rough patch or achieve a certain goal. Patti has always been interested in music, the arts, gardens and education. To her credit, she has made significant contributions to Colgate University where she received the Maroon Citation in 2009 for her work completed there. Donovan’s Pub at Colgate was given by Patti in 1984 and renovated in 2008. She just began a new project at St. Lawrence University, the mission of which is to link talented and passionate St. Lawrence University students and recent graduates with North Country public interest and non-profit organizations. Patti is an avid supporter of Greenwood Gardens, a 28-acre public garden surrounded by 2,110 acres of Essex County Park System’s South Mountain Reservation whose mission is to connect people with nature in a historic garden oasis. Patti is also a supporter of the Newark Boys’ Chorus and Spectrum 360, which serves children, adolescents, young adults and adults on the autism spectrum and with behavioral related disabilities. Through the years, Patti has given her own time and energy to the Red Cross, First Aid Squad (ten years), Westhampton Garden Club (twentyfour years) and after school drama classes. Her performances in the Racquets Club “Fun Nights” are legendary. Patti has three grown children, five grandchildren and resides in Short Hills with two amazing cats.

Matt Glass and his wife, Jennifer, moved from NYC to South Orange in 2005 and soon after moved their company, Eventage, to the heart of the Village Center. The couple founded Eventage in 1998 and have grown it into a nationallyrecognized event marketing agency that produces large scale events for brands and non-profits across the country. Matt got his start in events at Macy’s in 1992 and eventually served as Production Manager for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, 4th of July Fireworks, Flower Show and the Miracle on 34th Street, Santaland. Since founding Eventage, the couple has been proud to grow the company’s client base to include iconic events like the TCS New York City Marathon and the TD Five Boro Bike Tour and brands such as Royal Caribbean and M&Ms. Shortly after moving to town, Matt got involved locally. He served as Vice President of Main Street South Orange and was the only board member to continue on as Main Street evolved into the South Orange Village Center Alliance, a special improvement district. He has been the organization’s chair since its inception in 2012. His event and branding expertise can be seen in the organization’s most visible campaigns such as Play Day: Come Play in the Street!, Everybody Belongs Here, Live Music Capital of North Jersey and Hometown Holiday, where he has taken photos of families with Santa at the firehouse for many years (Macy’s is never far from his heart). Matt also lends his time and energy to The Achieve Foundation, Columbia High School’s theater program and several other Village organizations and departments. Matt and Jennifer have two daughters, Jess and Leah, who attend Columbia High School and South Orange Middle School, respectively. They also have two cats who don’t attend school but teach the family lessons most every day.

FEATURING CK SWETT
GRAMMY AWARD WINNERS VINCE GIORDANO & THE NIGHTHAWKS
Contributing to the communities we serve is integral to our business. Whether it be investing millions in our infrastructure; protecting our watersheds; assisting customers in need with their water bill; or supporting community initiatives, we seek to improve the quality of life of those we touch. In that regard, we proudly support SOPAC for all that you do to bring world-class music, theatre, dance, visual arts and more to the region.
CK Swett, a California native and Duke University graduate, began his career in the auction world in 2006, and has worked at Christie’s, Phillips and Heritage during the intervening ten years. In 2016, he founded Lot 1 with former Christie’s colleague, Charles Antin, in order to better address the critical importance of not-for-profit fundraising.
You are a shining star!
CK’s charity auctioneering efforts since 2010 have yielded more than $50 million across nearly 400 events that support everything from school children in Malawi and veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan to public schools in Manhattan and the American Cancer Society. Hailed by The New York Times as having “managed to shake up the staid world of auctioneering”, CK set the world auction record for boxing memorabilia in February 2012, selling the gloves Muhammad Ali wore during his 1965 fight against Floyd Patterson for $1.1 million on behalf of the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.

When not convincing bidders to raise their paddle one last time, he is often found swimming, playing chess on his phone, or singing enthusiastically off key.
The Nighthawks brand of Jazz-age Swing will lift you out of your seat with an electrifying performance like no other. Grammy Award-winner, New York native and multi-instrumentalist Vince Giordano has played in New York nightclubs, appeared in films such as The Cotton Club, The Aviator, Finding Forrester, Revolutionary Road, HBOs Boardwalk Empire and for concerts at the Town Hall, Jazz At Lincoln Center, the Newport Jazz Festival and the 92nd St Y for the past four decades. Recording projects include soundtracks for the award-winning Boardwalk Empire with vocalists Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, St. Vincent, Regina Spektor, Neko Case, Leon Redbone, Liza Minnelli, Catherine Russell, Rufus Wainwright and David Johansen. He has worked on many other feature films and television series. “ An erupting wellspring of euphoria: that would describe the vintage swing emanating from Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks.” – Stephen Holden, The New York Times
