10th Anniversary Gala

The South Orange Performing Arts Center’s 10th Anniversary Gala on October 29, 2016 was a spectacular celebration and a testament to the hard work of so many that made the dream a reality. SOPAC was proud to honor three individuals who made invaluable contributions to SOPAC as well as to the life of our community. Distinguished honorees South Orange Village President Sheena Collum, SOPAC Governor Carolyn “Cookie” Minick Mason, and longtime SOPAC backer and community leader Peter Shapiro were in attendance, celebrating with other longtime supporters. Thanks to the efforts of the honorees, a hard-working and enthusiastic Gala Host Committee, the generosity of Gala Sponsors, and a highly engaged Board of Governors and staff, this was the most financially successful Gala in SOPAC’s history. SOPAC is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support that marked a decade of performing arts in the heart of South Orange Village. With the backing of the entire community, SOPAC has become renowned throughout the state of New Jersey.

From the Executive Director

SOPAC Leads the Field in People’s Choice Three-Peat Thanks to you, SOPAC supporters and friends, we were voted New Jersey’s “Favorite Small Performing Arts Center” for the third year in a row in the 2017 Discover Jersey Arts People’s Choice Awards.

Dear Friends, As we enter the home stretch of our 11th season, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction and appreciation for the way our community has embraced SOPAC. And here are some indicators of that: • For the third year in a row we have been voted Favorite Small Performing Arts Center in the Discover Jersey Arts People’s Choice Awards. • So far this year, 22 performances have been completely sold out, a record in the history of the organization. • Our 10th Anniversary Gala, which honored Village President Sheena Collum, community leader Peter Shapiro, and longtime and beloved board member Cookie Mason, was completely sold out and was both a programmatic and financial success. • In one year we have more than doubled membership from approximately 600 to over 1200 people. • And because SOPAC’s shows are being so well attended and appreciated, we are gaining access to incredible artists who normally play in much larger venues. Artists like Graham Nash, David Crosby, Indigo Girls, Rosanne Cash and Oleta Adams are but a few of the luminaries who have graced our stage this year. Our success is inextricably linked to your support — as attendees, as financial contributors to this nonprofit organization, and as volunteers. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not mention SOPAC’s stellar staff who are completely committed to making our organization excellent in every aspect of our work, and our Board of Governors who are superb ambassadors for SOPAC and fully committed to its success. Thank you to all of you who are making SOPAC one of the finest cultural institutions in New Jersey. Mark E. Packer Executive Director

SOMA Film Festival Expands in Second Year

SOPAC Welcomes American Theater Group Mark Packer and James Vagias

Featuring entertaining and innovative independent films from 11 countries and from all corners of the United States, the second annual SOMA Film festival returned to the South Orange Performing Arts Center March 9 –12, 2017. “In our second year, we made a concerted effort to bring a slate of films that are strong from start to finish, to add more filmmaking elements that would move our town’s festival in the direction of other great festivals in New Jersey and beyond,” stated festival director Matt Smollon. Some of the highlights included the Academy Award nominee for “Best Documentary,” Fire at Sea, a poignant and timely feature documentary from Italy about the European migrant crisis. The North American premiere of She, The Sergeant Matacho from Colombia is about one woman’s revenge against an entire nation and the northeast premiere of Bitch, the tale of a wayward dog told from the dog’s point of view. An exciting new element added an entire “shorts” program dedicated to local filmmakers, and a Seton Hall University selection of shorts celebrating their cinema program. The SOMA Film Festival was nominated for a 2017 Discover Jersey Arts People’s Choice Award.

SOPAC welcomes our new theatre company in-residence. American Theater Group (ATG), a professional member theatre of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance is headed by Producing Artistic Director James Vagias. ATG is presenting staged readings in the SOPAC Loft during the current season, and in 2017–18 will produce at least two fully-staged productions on the mainstage. Remaining staged readings for the season include A Mind Out of the Gutter by Erin Mallon on May 21, and Levity by Stephanie DiMaggio on June 25. “We are excited to welcome American Theater Group to the SOPAC stage, and to South Orange,” noted SOPAC’s Executive Director Mark Packer. “James Vagias has an outstanding record of achievement in bringing new works to life. His reputation as a longtime producer in New Jersey is sterling and we feel that our audiences will be thrilled to see these quality productions in the intimate SOPAC theater.” A list of successful productions speaks to the experience Vagias brings to the table. He produced the world premiere musical Bubble Boy, written by noted screenwriter Cinco Paul (The Lorax, Despicable Me), which appeared at NY’s famed 54 Below. Another Off-Broadway premiere to his credit, Himself and Nora by Jonathan Brielle, was hailed by The New York Times as “handsomely produced.” Vagias also produced the 1995 world premiere of the long-running Off-Broadway hit, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, among many others. Thank you Robin Sherer Volunteer of the Year Robin Sherer consistently raises the bar with her dedication to volunteerism and assisting patrons as well as her enthusiasm for bringing new audiences to SOPAC. Volunteer & Performances Manager Grayce Coviello talks to Robin about her experience as a volunteer. GC: What prompted you to volunteer at SOPAC? RS: I was inspired to volunteer my time and efforts with SOPAC when I moved back to South Orange in 2013. A friend, also divorced, inspired me to get back out into the world and start meeting and greeting and making new friends. Life took an immediate upswing for me when I joined the SOPAC team. GC: Has your work at SOPAC changed your perspective on the performing arts? RS: In Ann Arbor, Michigan, I was the bookkeeper for a performing arts presenter. This gave me real insight into all the work

involved in presenting an artist. I also enjoy the concerts that my son has been performing in for more than a decade as a clarinetist. SOPAC shows me another side of this entertainment world and I truly feel like I am part of the process.

usher at SOPAC by describing the camaraderie among the ushers and night managers. I also explain the advantages to volunteering, the opportunities to see some amazing shows.

GC: Why do you volunteer for SOPAC?

GC: What has been your experience overall at SOPAC?

RS: I volunteer because I’ve been volunteering for most of my life. I believe in the power of music and being the mother of a musician, I support the arts probably more than most people. I also love the social aspect of the position. Greeting patrons, helping them to their seats and observing their reactions to the performances is invigorating and rewarding. I encourage friends to apply to

RS: SOPAC is a vital part of my life. I consider many of the people I’ve met to be friends and the performances I’ve seen over the past few years have been enjoyable and very often enlightening. I really admire the artists who come out to the lobby after their performances. The happier our guests, the more successful SOPAC will be. We’ve got a good team!

Self-Described Music Junkie Robert Epstein Rocks Membership! Attorney by day and arts aficionado by night, Robert Epstein has been a longtime member and friend of the South Orange Performing Arts Center. One of the many things he loves about SOPAC is its inviting and intimate performance spaces. “What makes every show so great and so special in its own right is the intimacy and the sound quality of the venue. The performers are able to interact with the audience in a way they may not be able to do from a larger stage,” says the 28-year resident of South Orange. He has watched the performing arts center grow from the ground up and has attended over 50 performances through the years. With 439 seats in the house and a quality connection between audience and

A man who loves classic rock, Epstein had the chance to meet one of his idols, Jorma Kaukonen of the ’60s rock bands Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, after a performance. Artists will often come to the lobby after a performance to meet fans, and to sign CDs and posters. Both fans and artists alike relish the interaction and appreciation that happens on a regular basis at SOPAC.

artist which Epstein has observed first-hand, he says it it is obvious that musicians love playing at SOPAC.

When asked what prompted him to become a SOPAC member and why he returns season after season, Epstein put it simply, “I like to support the arts. This place does a lot for the community. I come back every year because of the quality shows…and because I’m a bit of a music junkie!”

World Music Series Spotlights Global Artists With support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Mid Atlantic Foundation for the Arts, SOPAC is bringing artists from around the world to better serve the diverse audiences found in Essex County and beyond. Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars brought their own joyous rhythms to the stage on February 15, and afterwards sat down with WBGO on-air host Sheila Anderson for a Q&A that focused on the refugee experience and global political upheaval. Brazil’s Jazz

and Bossa Nova hero Vinicius Cantuária smoothly delighted audiences March 24 with his finely tuned interpretations of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. The lively and infectious songs of Gaelic Storm bring the party spirit of Ireland to South Orange on June 2. We look forward to bringing more exciting artists like these to SOPAC’s stage—where we are redefining a great arts experience.

spotlight on education

Inspired Minds Showcases Young Artists The Herb & Milly Iris Gallery at SOPAC showcases new and emerging artists at all stages of their careers. The eclectic exhibitions reflect the spirit of the founders of the Gallery, Herb & Milly Iris, and run the gamut from landscapes in mixed media, to collage photography, to brilliantly colorful images of the African diaspora and more.

When Mother Works Late in Corporate America, Sorasicha Nithikasem, Livingston High School

Inspired Minds is sponsored by Patricia Bell Curated by Jeremy Moss

Inspired Minds, an annual exhibition of talented art students selected from Essex County schools, showcases the exciting work being realized by young people still in high school. Guided by their teachers, these emerging artists display stunning creativity and accomplishment.

Terrence Thornhill Infuses Music Classes With Love and Respect Creating an atmosphere of love and respect in a safe environment for his students is at the top of Terrence Thornhill’s personal mission as a teacher. He is a teacher in the Orange School District and will be part of a new SOPAC music residency, funded by the Frank and Lydia Bergen Foundation, that will partner him with a teaching artist. Terrence grew up in Maplewood and attended school in the SOMA district. In high school he turned his career aspirations towards playing the cello, and becoming a music teacher. Mentored by the high school teachers who helped him further his studies, he eventually attended Montclair State University and studied with Nicholas Tzavaras of the Shanghai Quartet. As a teaching artist, Terrence combines a flourishing performing schedule with teaching his young students. When asked about what inspired him he stated, “One of my favorite memories is performing for the first time at Union County Performing Arts Center with my Paterson Music Project Students for their first concert ever. These second-graders learned their violin, viola and cellos in two months and delivered an incredible and important performance. They premiered a piece commissioned for them and shared the stage with the New Jersey Youth Symphony. To see the looks on the faces of their parents, and to experience their joy in that performance, truly confirmed for me that I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.”

Students undergo a full professional experience from juried selection, installation, an opening reception, exhibition, and in some cases, sale of their art work. Through this effort, we hope to represent the diversity of high school art students in Essex County. The exhibition is mounted in the late spring and will be on display through the summer. “Providing opportunities for emerging artists was the passion of the Gallery’s namesake, Milly Iris. Coupling those opportunities with education is at the core of SOPAC’s mission,” noted Linda Beard, Director of Community Engagement. “It is vital that we recognize arts education as valuable and that we nourish young artists and validate their achievements. We are delighted to offer our participating artists the chance to present their work in a professional exhibition.” 6

Grant Awards Bolster Special Projects SOPAC received a boon in government grants in 2017. Among them was a $40,000 New Jersey State Cultural Trust Grant for financial stabilization; a $33,000 general operating grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a $20,500 New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism Grant to increase audiences from New York City; and a $10,000 National Endowment for the Arts Challenge America Grant in support of SOPAC’s World Music Series. “Government grants are extremely competitive,” noted Executive Director Mark Packer after announcing SOPAC’s NEA

Challenge America Award last December. “These coveted grants are awarded to fewer than 1 in 10 applicants and can be likened to winning an Academy Award in the Arts,” he added. In March of 2017, the NEA funding helped to bring Vinicius Cantuaria canta Antonio Carlos Jobim to the SOPAC mainstage. This is the second year that SOPAC has received funding from the New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism. Funds from last year’s grant helped SOPAC realize a 79% increase in ticket sales from New York audiences during 2015–16.

In the range of gifts that the New Jersey Cultural Trust awards, the grant received by SOPAC is at the upper limits of their giving and will go towards creating a cash reserve. These grants are also highly competitive and reviewed by a peer panel convened at the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. SOPAC has received support from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts since 2013. However, this year’s grant was accompanied by a Citation of Excellence in recognition of the strong proposal and high standards exemplified by SOPAC — a rare and distinguished honor.

To date, the 2016–17 season has featured some of the most exciting and highest caliber artists SOPAC has ever presented. The season began with sold-out performances by David Crosby in August, followed by the legendary Donovan in September. In October, over 800 people sang to the rafters in two sold-out concerts by the Indigo Girls. The following night, SOPAC’s tenth anniversary celebration featured extraordinary local talent including Suzzanne Douglas, Savion Glover, Bill Charlap and Brother Valiant.

In November, Josh Ritter returned to SOPAC for another sold-out performance (are you detecting a theme?), and in February SOPAC welcomed the amazing Rosanne Cash to the stage as well as Marcia Ball and the Subdudes (also sold-out). In the Spring, Oleta Adams and David Sedaris played to sold out houses, and in June we welcome 2015 Tony Award winner Kelli O’Hara. All of these artists normally play much larger venues, but SOPAC is gaining a great reputation as a beautiful and intimate theatre where artists love to come and connect with their fans. With your support, we will keep on booking these great artists and building SOPAC’s reputation — where artists AND audiences connect for a great arts experience! 8

It Takes a Village In addition to our generous donors and members, SOPAC is fortunate to have strategic partners who are key to our success and stability. First and foremost, SOPAC is greatly appreciative of the support of the Village of South Orange and its recognition of SOPAC’s role in the economic vitality and quality of life for residents of our community. SOPAC is enriched by a partnership with Seton Hall University whose students and faculty add to the diversity of SOPAC’s programming, and in turn have access to our state-of-the-art theatre over 40 days each year. We are also grateful to the SO Village Center Alliance and all they do to bolster the downtown through business retention and attraction programs. And finally, we are thrilled to recognize our new artistic partner, American Theater Group, who will be offering readings and full productions at SOPAC for years to come. We offer our profound thanks and gratitude to all our wonderful partners, and together we will continue to build on South Orange’s reputation as a vibrant, thriving community that celebrates the arts.

Members Boost the Bottom Line SOPAC had a $2.9 million budget in FY16, with just over 40% coming from contributed income. Like other nonprofit art centers, SOPAC relies heavily on donations and institutional support. And so in FY17, we have made expanding SOPAC’s Membership base a priority in order to keep our programming exciting and diverse. To date, we have doubled the number of members from about 600 in winter 2016 to over 1,200 today. SOPAC Members receive early access to purchase tickets, invitations to receptions and special events throughout the season, and other benefits depending on the membership level. You can find all the details at www.SOPACnow.org/ support/membership. 10

Director of Production Raf Ricci left SOPAC in March to join his wife’s flourishing real estate business. He was one of the original crew at SOPAC, and has seen the organization change and grow through the years. ”Raf Ricci did an extraordinary job as SOPAC’s Director of Production. He comported himself with complete professionalism and was appreciated by the artists and management who came through SOPAC over the years,” declared Executive Director Mark Packer. “Raf was completely reliable, unflappable, and the person who made all of us laugh with his pithy, dry humor. We will miss him greatly, and wish him only great success in the next chapter of his life.” Thanks, Raf! We’ll miss your #terriblestageleftphotos on facebook!
