Dance Brings Exhilaration to SOMA Students Courtesy of AileyDance Kids A prestigious national grant of $75,000 from The Hearst Foundations in 2018 allowed SOPAC to launch a three-year sequential Dance Residency in the South Orange-Maplewood School District. With the support of James Manno, Fine and Performing Arts Department Supervisor, SOPAC partnered with AileyDance Kids (a program of the renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater) to bring teaching artists into the district’s middle schools. The pilot year culminated in February (2019) with an outstanding student performance at SOPAC which included an excerpt from Alvin Ailey’s masterpiece, Revelations.

From the Executive Director Dear Friends, Our thirteenth season has brought some significant and exciting changes to SOPAC. Most notably, we embarked upon a three-year partnership with the South Orange/Maplewood School District to bring Alvin Ailey’s educational dance residency program to the middle schools of our two communities. Neither school offered dance as part of their curriculum, and SOPAC was able to help fill a critical gap. This was made possible by a grant of $75,000 that SOPAC received from The Hearst Foundations, which funds high-caliber programs on a national level. We will continue to expand SOPAC’s footprint by serving the artistic needs of children in our community and region. That is my vision for SOPAC and my commitment to the future of the organization. Our fund-raising efforts will largely be focused on achieving this goal. We have continued on our trajectory of bringing our communities and region the highest-tier artistry on our main stage (the newly named Jennifer & Tony Leitner Performance Hall), which included five sold-out performances in a row at the beginning of our season featuring Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Griffin, Justin Hayward and a double header of the Indigo Girls. We have also focused intently on diversifying our programming and presenting artists who reflect the interests of our increasingly changing communities. From Scottish Pipers to high octane Bluegrass, from local up-and-coming Jazz luminaries to the greatest Folk and Pop artists of the last fifty years, our thirteenth season has been replete with interesting and dynamic performers. And next year is shaping up to be an extraordinary season that will turn heads and drop jaws (check out Graham Nash on September 25th for starters!) It’s gonna be great! We have launched a new initiative called Membership2020. We will strive to have that many members by the end of the 2020 calendar year. Membership provides myriad benefits, including presale access to the best seats at SOPAC and discounts on purchases, in addition to other perks. It also helps support your favorite performing arts center’s efforts to achieve its most charitable work. AND…it helps us underwrite the costs of bringing you the stellar artists that you have come to love hearing and seeing on the intimate SOPAC stage. Please become a member if you aren’t one already at SOPACnow.org/donate. None of the foregoing could happen without your financial support, attendance, volunteerism and advocacy. We are so grateful that for the fifth year in a row, we have been named Favorite Small Performing Arts Center through the Discover Jersey Arts People’s Choice Awards. That happened because you believe in us and our place as a superb, boutique performing arts center in North Jersey. Thank you for making SOPAC your home for the arts. Sincerely,
SOPAC Wins 5th People’s Choice Award 2019 marks the 5th year in a row that SOPAC has been voted “Favorite Small Performing Arts Center” in the annual Discover Jersey Arts People’s Choice Awards. We are very proud, and grateful to our loyal supporters who cast their votes in the January 8 – February 20 voting period. Arts organizations throughout the state vied for top honors in the friendly competition, but SOPAC’s patrons made all the difference in getting out the vote. Winners were announced in March at a special reception in the ArtPride NJ offices in Burlington.

Tell Them I’m Still Young A world premiere drama by New Yorker Julia Doolittle, Tell Them I’m Still Young brought laughter, tears and more than a little emotion to record-breaking audiences for the American Theater Group in a January production. It also brought Emmy Award-winning Andre Braugher and Tony Award-winning Michele Pawk to the stage in what can only be described as tour-de-force roles for these acclaimed actors, who both live in South Orange. Actors Janice Amaya and Seth Clayton rounded out the small cast, and made their moments shine. Allen, a professor, and Kay, a poet, have lost their only child in a tragic accident. The pain and grief rend the fabric of their marriage as they take refuge in other activities that distract them from facing their lives without their beloved daughter. As they struggle to reconcile their guilt, they also struggle to save their marriage.

SOPAC in the Community In addition to bringing AileyDance Kids into the local middle schools, SOPAC fills the community with fun and inspirational arts experiences. Here are just a few:

SOPAC’s Music Residency in the Orange School District brings teaching artists from prestigious music academies into local schools to fill gaps in the classical music curriculum. Over 1,000 paintings and drawings are submitted each year for INSPIRED MINDS, SOPAC’s annual art exhibition for Essex County highschoolers. A jury of art professionals, practitioners and experts narrows the pool to about 60 pieces that will be installed in The Herb & Milly Iris Gallery at SOPAC. An open public reception in May is the culmination of the student’s efforts, and the artwork will hang through the summer. Please check SOPACnow.org/ inspired-minds for details.
This year, SOPAC partnered with Nimbus, a professional dance company headquartered in Jersey City, to launch the High School Dance Workshop for select students of The Special Dance Company at Columbia High School. The Price of Sugar is Sweet for Jenny Reinhardt
top photo: Jennifer Reinhardt with her work, Dextrose bottom: Popcorn by Jennifer Reinhardt
Jenny Flexner Reinhardt’s The Price of Sugar was enormously successful and well-attended. This critically-acclaimed exhibit drew art lovers near and far, intoxicating them with a heady mixture of confection references, street art, abstract painting and figurative drawings. Jenny Flexner Reinhardt studied fine art at the University of Michigan before completing her MFA cum laude at the New York Academy of Art. Reinhardt then immersed herself into the world of art education, sharing her talents and knowledge with aspiring young artists. Love, marriage and children followed, with Reinhardt taking a hiatus from the art world to raise a family. Fast forward to 2015 when Reinhardt signed a lease on a spacious, light-bathed studio in the Valley Arts District of Orange, NJ. She re-immersed herself in her art and explored her identity as an artist, allowing herself reflective time to gain inspiration. In 2017, Reinhardt met Jeremy Moss, curator of The Herb & Milly Iris Gallery, who asked to see her work. He was impressed with her skill, recognizing a major talent reemerging. Moss set a target of two years for Reinhardt to create a body of large works that would adorn the walls of The Herb & Milly Iris Gallery. Three months in and Reinhardt had a concept, and the journey to December 2018 started. 6 Spring 2019

Independent Voices Debuts at SOPAC
Entertaining the Future Fund Hits Goal In October SOPAC was proud to have reached its campaign goal of $1,200,000. The Entertaining the Future campaign was established in 2016 with the aim of ensuring SOPAC’s long-term financial stability and continued programmatic success. 50% of the generously donated proceeds will be used for general operating support, with the other 50% going toward a reserve fund which will provide SOPAC with the ability to present world-class artists for years to come as well as address capital expenses as needed. SOPAC’s music residency in the Orange School District
Entertaining the Future was led to success by Executive Director Mark Packer, Board Chair Paul Bartick, and several members of the Board of Governors. SOPAC wishes to thank all those who gave their time and resources to making this campaign a success, particularly leading funders Anthony and Jennifer Leitner, Patti Donovan and Larry and Carol Brodey.
Independent Voices, proudly sponsored by The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, is a new series of speakers at SOPAC designed to challenge and NYTimes reporter stimulate thought Maggie Haberman and conversation. Two speakers on the cutting edge of the ever-changing and ever-surprising political events of our times, New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman and senior editor of The Atlantic David Frum, were featured during the 2018-19 season. In October 2018, the Jennifer & Tony Leitner Performance Hall at SOPAC was humming with pre-election buzz as television reporter Budd Mishkin questioned Maggie Haberman about her experience covering the White House during one of the most interesting times in history. David Frum is appearing at SOPAC May 23rd, in a presentation and audience Q&A.

The 2018-19 season, our lucky 13th, was filled with superb performances from Music to Magic, and so much more! Summer brought two amazing artists to our stage with Mary Chapin Carpenter and Patty Griffin lighting up the July night with songs and stories. Audiences truly enjoyed their interactions with these artists. When Mary forgot lyrics to a song one of our front row fans handed her his cell phone with the lyrics! And the show went on to great delight. The Indigo Girls returned to our stage for two back-to-back performances in September. Colin Quinn and the Manhattans added their luster to the season, and The New York Times’s Maggie Haberman was interviewed by Budd Mishkin in the new speaker series Independent Voices. SOPAC’s Gala brought out the glitter and stardust as we honored the legendary Dionne Warwick. With entertainment by Judy Collins, a silent auction and catering by Exquisite Entertaining, the annual Fall fundraiser was a huge success. Return engagements of Peter Yarrow & Noel Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul and Mary fame), Madeleine Peyroux and the Naked Magicians provided a variety of entertainment.

2018-19 Season A Wonderful Variety on the SOPAC Stage
R&B Soul singer Vivian Green made an appearance and Giants of Jazz 21, an annual Jazz extravaganza, gave a touching tribute to South Orange’s own Claudio Roditi. John Oates, Aaron Neville, Janeane Garofalo, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band with Cha Wa turned up the heat in the cold winter months. New this year was our “In the Loft” series featuring Singer-Songwriters, Folk and Jazz artists in the more casual 3rd floor Loft. Mary Fahl, Suzzanne Douglas, James Maddock, Garland Jeffreys and Ellis Paul gave our Loft performances a new element. And our Blues and Jazz in the Loft series continues to present local musicians with an international reputation. Bluegrass fans saw their idols Del McCoury and David Grisman in March, dance fans were treated to two world premiere pieces by the acclaimed Nimbus dance company. With dozens more performances yet to come through June we are already booking our 14th season. Keep an eye on the e-news as we keep adding to the stellar roster.

Outstanding Staffers Dedicated to Excellence Alicia Whavers and Katelyn Fatzler have both made outstanding contributions to their respective departments in the past year. Taking initiative in learning new technology and bringing solutions to various challenges have enabled their departments to function more efficiently. Both of these young staffers take great pride in their work, and in their commitment to excellence. Alicia Whavers first joined SOPAC’s Audience Services team in 2016 as a Box Office Representative and House Manager, providing excellent customer care and assistance. Her talents eventually brought her to head SOPAC’s volunteer program as Audience Services Manager. In her current position, Alicia oversees more than 100 volunteers who work as ushers and administrative assistants. Between coordinating volunteer orientations and scheduling shifts, she somehow finds the time to audition for and produce theater performances. Alicia graduated from Drew University in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Theatre Arts. Her passion for performing arts began in high school and became a hobby turned career. “Knowing that I’ve helped people connect with the arts is a rewarding experience for me.” As Alicia explains it, “theatre tells a story” and she loves helping others get the most from the artists that cross the SOPAC stage. Katelyn “Katie” Fatzler has graced SOPAC with her presence for 4 years. Starting off as a Box Office Representative and House Manager, she then transitioned to Box Office Supervisor, Administrative Assistant, and finally Development Associate. As a bastion in SOPAC’s membership program, she enjoys talking to patrons and members as well as helping them through their concerns; “Being here you can see how much everyone cares. And it is awesome being able to do something that helps.” When asked about her connection to the arts she stated, “I’ve always appreciated it, but I think it’s music that really connects with me. I was a flutist in a youth band for eight years and a radio DJ for four years.” Katie began working at SOPAC during her time at Seton Hall University and gained a full-time position after graduating in 2017.
Development Department Welcomes New Staff Ruth Zamoyta, Director of Development, served for four years as Development & Communications Director at New Jersey Theatre Alliance, the service organization for the state’s professional, non-profit theatres. She served over four years as Communications & Project Manager in the Office of the President at Columbia University before joining the Theatre Alliance team. Ruth earned an MS in strategic communications from Columbia University, an MA in English from New York University and a BA summa cum laude from St. John’s University. She is a published poet and novelist, and received a 2018 New Jersey State Council on the Arts Artist Fellowship for playwriting. She is a member of the International Centre for Women Playwrights and the Dramatists Guild.
