About me

24/10/1985

My name is Sybren Stroo. I studied Spatial Planning in Utrecht. It’s a study in which I graduated as a city planner, with a touch of Urban Design. After finishing the study above I started a Master in Public Space Design. There I switched to a more design and research based program from the Open University London. I believe public spaces and the urban environment form the canvasses of the people’s lives.

On these pages you’ll find my most memorable and relevant projects that I’ve been working on during my studies and internships. The portfolio is developing with each added project. //

Hogeschool Utrecht

2005-2009

Through the program and subjects of this university for applied science I got involved in a variety of urban environmental disciplines. Next to traffic engineering, planning and environmental studies, I was very much interested in urban design. During these four years I enjoyed three intresting and important internships. First DRO Amsterdam with several major design assignments. Secondly I went to SLA landscape-architects in Copenhagen, there I got inspired to work in a different scale; more the human scale of urban design. I graduated in Rotterdam at DS+V with a succesful research in the develpment of a design-toolkit for the public spaces along the innercity quays. //

MaHKU

2009-2010

As a result of the inspiring experience in Copenhagen I wanted to learn more about the human scale of design within the realm of urban landscapes. I entered this MaHKU study with a research proposal that would change the perception of the public on their surroundings. My attempt was to create new perspectives on the facades that define the public spaces. Therefore I dived into the characteristics of commercial related public spaces and connected them to a media theorie. As a result I constructed a new way of involving facades in the urban design trajectory in order to (re)activate public spaces. Besides that I worked on several other interesting projects concerning public space design. //

OKRA

2010-2011

Right after graduating from MaHKU I started at OKRA landscape-architects. In varying teams I worked on projects such as masterplans for public spaces, strategies for industrial grounds, conducting research for the province and other urban design assignments. My most memorable project was a masterplan for the public space of city of Basel (CH). I was also involved in the graphical and communicative part of the designs and booklets. //

LOLA

2011- . . .

As a further exploration towards landscape design and urban design I joined LOLA landscape architects. This Rotterdam based firm has a fascination for new spatial phenomena and a conceptual approach towards research and design. Though in smaller teams I got involved in design processes such as an urban square in Rotterdam, a boulevard in Roermond and a masterplan for an ecological zone along the Spaarnwoudertocht. Like at OKRA I was also responsible for the graphical and communicative part of the designs, booklets, presentations and graphs/diagrams. //

Note: it’s very important to also look at the portfolio-website. There is more space for me to showcase my projects with all the included booklets and products!

DRO Amsterdam // Teleport Sloterdijk Teleport is the central district of Sloterdijk Amsterdam. It contains one of the busiest railway stations of the Netherlands. The greater part of the users of Teleport are businesspeople. There will be more different types of users in the future because of the transformation that is planned in the near future by the DRO (Spatial Planning Service of Amsterdam). There will be more high-rise buildings that will not only contain businesses, but also more commercial-end fulfilments. This will change the area around the Teleport railway station dramatically. The goal is to use the public space in every moment of the day and evening. This will help to counteract the desolation. To achieve such goals I needed to find out which (commercial) functions would be appropriate for Teleport. These functions will, most likely, be put in the lower levels of the new high-rise. Next to finding out which routes and users there will be on every specific time of the day, I needed to find a way to make the area a comfortable place to stay. Therefore I proposed some options of roofing the square in front of the railway station.

SLA Copenhagen // Kløvermarkskvarteret The competition team was trying to find an overall strategy or masterplan of where to put the housing. The Kløvermarkskvarteret is a very big open field with only sport fields on it. On the outer eastside is the sea and some kind of island with oil tanks. On the west side you’ll find the southern part of the Copenhagen City. North of the area there are mush gardens with little sheds, this is all very packed and build almost on top of each other. The team wanted me to find out which part of the area was the most obvious spot to put the biggest part of the program. So I moved around with volumes and surfaces that I drew in AutoCad. This was the smallest part of my job. Later on, while the team was working on the strategy, I was working on a model. This was supposed to be a working model on which they could ‘plant’ the new program later on. They use these kinds of models to make pictures of it and add it to the booklet and presentation screens. This time my involvement was more limited than it was with the Scion-DTU project. But nevertheless it was a nice way to join a competition.

Public Space Design subjects // ‘De Ysbreker’ // Design analyses // ‘Vondel verses’ Master programmes in art and design focus on a research-based process of creation. As a Master student, I critically reflected on the boundaries of my discipline through research methodologies, a variety of theoretical discourses, and interdisciplinary activities. But I also engaged in a rich mix of discipline-specific topics and discussions. Last but not least, in this master year, I produced project-based art/design work contexualized by your research essay. As a Master student, I learned to contextualize my work in the broad perspective of a number of creative disciplines and theoretical discourses. A successful Master degree makes my work, my creative process, and my profession even more dynamic and complex. This chapter shows 3 different design projects.

MaHKU Public Space Design A bar in Amsterdam asked us to think of a way to redesign their interior/exterior. I connected the outside with the inside with a playful use of different platform reaching out to the waterside.

Anouk Vogel’s design for the benches and lightposts of the Vondelpark in Amsterdam needed some refinements. I decided to continue on the theme by adding wastebins, integrated in Anouk’s organically shaped lightposts.
