The Shuttle Prepares
On the day before the launch, I was ushered out a few football fields away from the shuttle. It was surreal being so close, even though I wanted to be closer...closer...closer.... but the 28-300 was plenty lens enough to get in tight so you can see all the details of the shuttle and the launch facility skunkworks...

KATIA MRSDUSTYFINGER
MARIA COSMIC GIRL
Back in 1992, two little girls, with bows in their hair, shared the same school desk and several years later, which leads us to now, share the same studio. As if not a single day has passed, having still the same childishness and driven not only by their great love for music, but also by their strong friendship, decided to timidly, start their own radio show. Besides, their talent for broadcasting was evident already from their very first steps, or rather a little later, when they were recording their own radio shows on cassettes. Radio shows that were based, only, on their imagination. In order not to lose this "innate talent", Katia and Maria, also known as mrsdustyfinger and cosmic girl, are mixing up their musical preferences and broadcast live on the web radio station poplie.eu, every Saturday night. You are wondering now, why would anyone want to hear this show.... well, do you have anything better to do? Just before your night out, on a Saturday evening, shake off the misery of the week, dress up, and tune in shortly before your first drink!

I'm going to tell you a story... Long ago, I lived on the even side of a street, at number 22. I gazed at the houses across the street. Thinking the people were happier... Their rooms were sunnier... Their parties more fun. But in the fact, their rooms were darker and smaller. And they, too, gazed across the street. Because... We always think that luck is what we don't have. “La fille sur le pont

Design for Living* Good design should be innovative. Good design should make a product useful. Good design is aesthetic design. Good design will make a product understandable. Good design is honest. Good design is unobtrusive. Good design is long-lived. Good design is consistent in every detail. Good design is environmentally friendly. Last but not least, good design is as little design as possible.
[Dieter Rams] Former Design Director, Braun
There are countless definitions of design. Some of them aim to categorize design, explain how different or related is to other activities, while others try to inspire good design like above. The debate on the definition of design is likely to never end. Therefore, I consider the following description to be more sophisticated and complete for nowadays: Design is the process by which the problems are defined and the solutions are produced. [Innovation Is Served, 2009] Traditionally problems were seen as complicated challenges that could be solved through breaking them into smaller and smaller chunks – like fixing a car. However, the most important modern problems are complex rather than complicated. Complex problems are messier and more ambiguous in nature; they are more connected to other problems; more likely to react in unpredictable non-linear ways; and more likely to produce unintended consequences. Organizations have been designed for a complicated rather than a complex world. Hierarchical and silo structures are perfectly designed to break problems down into more manageable fragments. They are not, however, so effective handling high levels of complexity. For this reason, many of the most long standing institutions are now struggling to adapt to a more complex world. In this context, it is widely believed that the design process, and the skills inherent in designing, must form a key part of a new approach to tackling our most pressing economic and social issues. However, design goes beyond problem solving. Solutions to today’s most intractable issues – such as the rise of chronic health conditions, the impacts of climate change, or the consequences of an aging population – depend on the choices that people make in their everyday lives: how they eat, consume energy, or form relationships. Good design creates products, services, spaces, interac-
tions and experiences that not only satisfy a function or solve a problem, but that are also desirable, aspirational, compelling and delightful. These are qualities desperately needed by organizations in both public and private sector which are seeking to transform the way in which they connect to individuals. Historically, the design was seen as a subsequent step in the development methodology. It has been the point where designers, who had not earlier played a role in the essential work of innovation, demonstrated and put a nice wrapping around the idea. Of course, this approach has stimulated the development of market in many areas, making new products and technologies aesthetically appealing and therefore more desirable to consumers, or enhancing the perception of corporate identity through smart, outlandish advertising and communication strategies. During the second half of the twentieth century, the design became an increasingly valuable competitive advantage, for example, in automotive, in consumer electronics and packaged industrial consumer products, but in most other sectors remained an additional element at a late stage. Today, however, that leaders perceive innovation as the main source of differentiation and competitive advantage, instead of requiring designers to make an already developed idea more seductive to consumers, companies ask them to create ideas that best meet their needs and desires of users. The former role is tactical and results in the creation of limited value, while the latter is a strategic and leading to dramatic new forms of value. Not surprisingly, someone may ask himself: But how design differs from other strategic activities? Probably the most obvious feature of the design is that this makes ideas tangible; takes abstract thoughts and inspirations
and makes something concrete. In fact, it is often said that designers do not think and then translate their thoughts into physical form, but they really think by creating things. This ability to realize new ideas from an early stage in the development of products or services means that they are more likely to succeed faster. Another, sometimes less obvious feature of design activity lies on that it is anthropocentric. The designers sometimes are presented as obsessed with themselves, but the truth is that the totally great designers are highly interested in real people who will use the product, the building or the service that they develop. The focus on users inspires great ideas and ensures that solutions meet real needs, whether users are fully aware of them or not. This pragmatic process that makes ideas tangible and then tests them with users means that the design has a unique ability to simplify things. Anything that is too complicated to be understood, to be notified or work is quickly revealed. Perhaps that is why the truly great design can seem so obvious as common sense. Finally, the design is collaborative. The dual role of tangibility and human-centeredness mean that the design process is suitable for the development of dialogue with others. The design methodologies are increasingly used as a way to allow designers and nondesigners to work together to address key issues. In conclusion, while economies of the developed world move from manufacturing to knowledge work and delivery of services, the ground for innovation expands. The objectives are no longer limited to physical products, but include new types of procedures, services, entertainment, ways of communication and cooperation, as well as interactions IT-powered. These are just anthropocentric categories of activities in which design thinking may confer crucial difference.

Design for Living is the collective name for a series of three design films directed by documentary film director Gary Hustwit. His globe-trotting, three-part exploration of modern design is a major contribution to the discussion about the spaces, objects and images which surround us. While not scanting criticism of the poor planning (and taste) that afflicts so much of urban design, Hustwit bypasses the culture of complaint to focus on the positive impact that well-wrought design can have on the culture, environment, and very tenor of our times.
The films are: Helvetica on typography, graphic design and global visual culture [trailer] Objectified on industrial design, our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them [trailer] Urbanized on urban design and architecture [trailer]

I go back to the past and the image that first comes to my mind is to be around 6 to7 years old..to have gotten logs and nails secretly with the purpose to construct a plane secretly ..I thought that I would fly far away with it! That was my first contact with materials and tools..resulting in a broken fingernail and the absolute frustration that finally I wouldn't be able to fly.. I started painting like escapism..like every time I was experiencing a short trip. When I entered the School of Fine Arts on Tinos island, I was enchanted by sculpture and my contact with the marble..love! I fell in love with the third dimension, the marble as a material at first..I was thrilled by the result. During my studies at the School of Fine Arts in Athens, I was convinced that sculpture was the only subject I wanted to pursue. Then, I saw as an eyewitness that there were many materials of exceptional qualities besides marble, that anyone can use
to express himself. Materials such as wood, metal..metal! After my first visit to the metal workshop of my school, its smell still remains in my nostrils.. I started timidly my first attempts with this new material..It was hard at first but while I was working on it, I could see that the first technical difficulties were simple..nevertheless, I overcame them and I could finally see the plastic properties of metal. What followed then is always before my eyes.. my teacher told us that three things would make us sculptors..firstly work, secondly work and thirdly work! Sculpture and art in general, is for me a great extension of life, I consider it crucial for the evolution of man's route in the future. Through my work, I am trying to see through myself..in the dark paths of my mind, to illuminate them as much as I can..even if it is only with a small candle. To see! I want to see..and if all the other people can see with me, then I will be truly happy..
My works have been exhibited in various group exhibitions that took place in Greece and abroad and I was pleased to present my first solo exhibition which was held at Kaplanon5 Gallery. The last exhibition was held at the Cyprus Consulate in New York, under the auspices of George Best Costacos Foundation. Greece is for me the place that enlightened me spiritually, it raised me through many difficulties..many times I quarreled with it..like my dear woman..however I adore my country unimaginantly deeply, I feel like a rooted tree inside it, that still endures no matter what the weather may be..I will be waiting for spring, for my branches to bloom.. I suppose that like everyone else, I cannot be unaffected by other artists of my area or neighbouring ones..Regarding greek sculptors, I mostly admire the works of Halepas, his pacience as a man in life, the works of Kapralos, especially his works on wood, these of Zoggolopoulos mainly his first ones. Concerning foreign ones, I am fond of all the artwork of Alberto Giacometti without exception, as well as Henry Moore's work. I consider that all kinds of art are one.. like everything in life is ultimately one..of course a kind of art can be influenced by another..for instance, I really like reading poetry and be inspired by it so as to make an artwork..music for example results from poetry as well. I have a lot of plans in my mind for the future..but what matters most is to be fine!Everything else comes next..I have prepared a new series of works, for which unfortunately I cannot reveal something before they are exposed..except that they are a visual reference to a ship.
