To optimise the facility and ensure continuous production of demineralised water “THE ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS ARE UNQUESTIONABLE.” Mr Mathieu Sartre, Sales Engineer Ondeo IS

The OMOBILE reverse osmosis unit was installed in July 2010 as a pretreatment for the permanent demineralisation system using ion exchange resins. The objective was to optimise the resin regeneration cycle which previously had been every 3,000 m³ of treated water. With OMOBILE, the first regeneration was performed after 30,000 m³ of treated water, amounting to optimisation beyond our expectations. This result also means that lower quantities of chemical reagents are used. The economic and environmental benefits are unquestionable.

The nuclear power plant has a number of permanent demineralisation lines using ion exchange resin technology to provide it with the demineralised water it needs. In order to guarantee constant quality of demineralised water, the resins need to be regenerated regularly. This regeneration process involves stopping water production, consuming large quantities of chemical reagents and discharging salts into the environment. The key challenges were to ensure continuous production of demineralised water and optimise the existing facility.

Degrémont Industry, via Ondeo IS, provided a mobile unit, OMOBILE, using reverse osmosis technology. Positioned upstream of the permanent demineralisation facility, the OMOBILE solution serves as a pretreatment designed to improve water quality at entry. The water is now of higher quality before it flows through the ion exchange resins, in fact around 30 times better than the quality of the previous raw water. Thus OMOBILE, a reliable solution not requiring any costly capital investment, enables the customer to reduce the resin regeneration frequency in its permanent plant.

Continuous production of demineralised water so reducing risks of unavailability From a previous resin regeneration rate of every 3,000 m³, the customer has been able to extend its production cycle to every 30,000 m³ of treated water without interruption. Therefore availability of the demineralised water production facility is now significantly improved and the risk of non-availability of demineralised water much reduced.

Savings in terms of regeneration reagents A reduction in the number of resin regenerations automatically leads to savings in the cost of chemical reagents. Improved technical and environmental performance The quantity of salts discharged into the environment has also been reduced by about 80% and the quality of the demineralised water produced by the resin lines, in particular the silica levels, is greatly improved .

A reliable solution without costly capital investment OMOBILE is a reliable solution, either temporary or long term, enabling customers to test out and adopt the proposed solution without costly capital investment while at the same time complying with quality and volume requirements.
