How can we explain the overtly calculated breaches of the principles of appropriateness and the clarity of depiction at a time when, in a quite unprecedented manner, religious pictorial imagery was being brought into line with the ideas of Catholic reform? This is the question addressed in this study, which outlines a model for describing the changes in painting around 1600.

Künstler waren seit der Renaissance auf einen Kanon vorbildhafter Motive und Formen verpflichtet, was immer wieder Gegenreaktionen auslöste. Insbesondere bildparodistische Verfahren eigneten sich für eine kunstimmanente Kritik an Autoritäten und ästhetischen Normen sowie zur Formulierung von Autonomie- und Statusansprüchen. Obwohl solche Gegenbilder in der frühen Neuzeit überaus präsent waren, rücken sie nun erstmals in den Blick der Forschung.
Starting in the Renaissance, artists were bound to a canon of exemplary motifs and forms, something that again and again provoked counter-reactions. Methods parodying pictures could be used as an intrinsic artistic critique of authorities and aesthetic norms and to articulate claims to autonomy and status. Even though such counter-images were very much present in the early modern period, they are now in the focus of research for the first time.

The striving for a royal crown, the ennobling of a clever financial policy, or the immortalizing of glorious victories—all of this is reflected in the bronzes by Massimiliano Soldani Benzi. Soldani, who trained in Rome and Paris, produced refined new creations of originals from antiquity, which could only be obtained through diplomatic networks, long before the art market of the eighteenth century made copies of ancient sculptures a mass product.

Several new publications at De Gruyter highlight the cultural history of the early modern Roman Curia by applying methods and ndings of church history, liturgical history, and art history. Editions and studies allow new insights into, for instance, the Vatican Apostolic Library, the self-portrayal of the Barberini family, and the signi cant in uence of thus far understudied cardinals.

The series “Monumenta Sirletana Romanae Curiae” is a multi-volume critical edition of Cardinal Guglielmo Sirleto’s (1514 – 1585) complete correspondence and unpublished works. Cardinal Sirleto is considered one of the most productive Church prelates of sixteenth-century Rome. During his lifetime, he established himself as one of the most esteemed cardinals in the Roman Curia due to his erudition, ultimately earning himself the moniker of il sapientissimo Calabro (“the all-knowing Calabrese”). Sirleto’s vast correspondence and his numerous unpublished works attest to the important role he played in shaping Roman and papal ecclesiastical government in Reformation Europe. For the rst time in modern scholarship, the critical editions in the series “Monumenta Sirletana Romanae Curiae” provide access to Cardinal Guglielmo Sirleto’s numerous works, which are held as manuscripts in the archives and libraries of Rome and the Vatican. The edition comprises three sections: Section A (Epistolarium) contains Sirleto’s letters in ve volumes, Section B (Operae) his works in twelve volumes. Section C (Regestae) consists of the registers of his letters in ve volumes.
