Elias Hutter was interested in the unity of language and religion, about which he wrote an impressive magnum opus in the late sixteenth century. He believed that Hebrew, as the original divine language, was the answer to his question, and wanted to revolutionize its study. To do so, he developed new methods for language pedagogy in combination with theological concepts, which this publication introduces and places within their historic context.

The Reformation leveled criticism at cultural images, which sometimes led to iconoclasm. While Calvinism drew on the Old Testament’s aniconism, Counter-Reformatory Catholicism clung to iconodulism. In church music, various forms of worship led to the mass, the chorale, and the psalter, while literature was frequently called into the service of confessional propaganda.

Andrew Fuller's commentary on Revelation (1815) appeared as one of the final statements of his long engagement with biblical apocalyptic writing. Fuller thought through his eschatological commitments as he moved from the high Calvinism of his early ministry to the evangelical Calvinism of his later life. His commentary on Revelation promoted the robust post-millennial optimism that did so much to support his enthusiasm for global missionary work.

Ryland (1753−1825) aimed not only to give “a faithful representation” of his friend’s character but also—modeled on the biographical works of Jonathan Edwards— to promote “pure and undefiled religion” through recounting a life founded on “truly scriptural and evangelical principles.”

The Nuremberg Miscellany is a unique work of scribal art, rich with paint and powdered gold. It was penned and illustrated in southern Germany in 1589 by Eliezer b. Mordechai the Martyr. The book is a compilation of religious Hebrew texts, which was probably created as a father’s wedding gift to his son. The text and the naïve illustrations are a treasure of Jewish lore and a veritable reflection of contemporary life of an affluent Jewish family.
