Dear Members of the De La Salle community, As we approach the end of Term 4, we can look back with satisfaction on all that has transpired during the term. The number of boys who have represented the College in the various ACC sports is gratifying. We congratulate those basketballers who brought home the Championship flags. It has also been a busy time for music with their tour to the Beechworth area at the start of the term. Our debaters won entry to the Zone Grand Final narrowly losing the final by 1 point—our senior debaters were a skilled team and involved themselves with passion. We congratulate the senior footballers who went on to play for the Under 19 DLS Old Collegians A team and scored a convincing Grand Final win over Old Xaverians last Saturday afternoon. On Sunday the tables were turned when the senior team went down to Old Xaverians and were denied a place in the finals next weekend. This term we have also had a sacrament of Confirmation and a Class Mass program established for our Year 9 boys. We are grateful to Father Hien Vu, Parish Priest of Ashburton, for his availability and generosity in making himself so available for our boys. That program will now move to Year 10 in Term 4. We end this term with a Mass for Social Justice. Father Tony Kerin, Old Collegian, Parish Priest of Avondale Heights and Episcopal Vicar for Social Justice will celebrate the Mass with us. Every boy in the College has been given designated food items to bring to our College collection and the goods will then be distributed to our identified charities for this year. It was they who have determined the goods they would prefer. On Sunday last, 16 Year 11 boys left for Papua New Guinea with Mr. Tim Hogan and Mr. Sam Magree and a qualified builder who has volunteered his services to our program in De La Salle School, Bomana. By the time you read this, boys will be hard at work. They have 3 Science rooms to renovate as the major part of our ongoing Centenary project in that school. We want to make a difference for them. Our Year 12 volunteers to India are currently doing their fundraising and preparation for their trip once their exams are completed. The major functions for the Centennial year are almost complete. The Dinner at Crown was a wonderful success and we are grateful to Kerry Martin and her wonderful presentation in the last edition of Roll Call which I hope each family has received now. Our final Centennial event will be the blessing of the Kinnoull Chapel in Term 4. Finally, I express my thanks to staff for their energy, dedication and commitment to our boys. It is they that make all things possible and it is their enthusiasm for teaching that enables us to continue to grow as a school. May you all have a restful and pleasant holiday period. Parents are reminded of the mid-Semester 2 Parent/Teacher Interviews for the College (except Year 12, who will have a scheduled program on that day) on Thursday, 11 October from 4.00on to 9.00pm and Friday, 12 October from 8.30am to 3.00pm i.e. the first week of Term 3. A letter will be sent in the first week of the school holidays advising of your login details to the PTO booking system which is accessed through the College Website. Bookings will be open on Monday, 1 October, 2012. There will be no reports sent home prior to this meeting. It will be an opportunity for parents to check the progress of your son(s), especially if there were some concerns exposed in the mid year reports.
Mitchell Bonollo - (Grade 6) represented Victoria in Ice Hockey, in Term 2. Congratulations Mitchell, a great effort. Sam Michael - (Year 8B) has had a great year of success in his chosen sport - baseball. He was:a member of the Under 14 Victorian Baseball Team in January that competed in the Nationals in Perth. Victoria came 2nd of Western Australia but same was one of the top ‘hitters’ nationally in his age group; in March he was a member of the Under 14 Cheltenham Baseball Team that won the State Major League title; and he was a member of the Under 17 Cheltenham White Baseball Team that won the Dandenong Association Under 17 League title in September. Well done Sam. Congratulations to the Under 12 DLS Jets who were victorious (by 4 points, 26-22) in their Grand Final last Friday night at the Oakleigh Recreation Centre. Well done, boys.

who died in Ballarat on Tuesday, 28 August 2012. Adrian was the fourth of six Mullaly brothers to attend De La Salle. Others were John (dec) (1944), Paul (1946), Peter (1943), Kevin (1956) and Mark (1960). A further eleven Mullaly boys are Old Collegians—John’s son’s David (1979), Stephen (1980), Phillip (1982) and Justin (1993), Paul’s sons Richard (1974), Gerard (1978), Andrew (1979) and Tim (1981) and Peter’s sons Michael (1981), Christopher (1984) and Patrick (1986). Andrew has two boys currently at De La Salle - Matthew (Year 12) and James (Year 8) - making a total of 19 Mullaly’s to attend the College.
died suddenly on Thursday 6 September, 2012 whilst holidaying in Cornwall UK with his wife. He and his brothers, Damien (1961), Patrick (1961) and Paul (1963) were Old Collegians. Paul is Br. Paul Smith fsc, CEO of the Lasallian Foundation. Tony was Chair of the Lasallian Foundation. Tony Smith has spent over 40 years in education, including 23 years in senior positions at Australian Catholic University and the International campuses of Central Queensland University (CQU). This included periods of governance on incorporated entities. The last position prior to retirement from full time employment was the role of Manager of the Quality of Educational Services at CQU’s international campuses in Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Brisbane and Fiji. Tony has also been actively involved in welfare, having chaired the Boards of Vaugirard, a Youth Service in Mordialloc, and Kids Help Line Australia Ltd over a period of 16 years, the latter role involving significant contracts with State and Federal Governments, as well as corporate sponsors. He was most recently involved in educational and management consultancy before his retirement from the workforce in 2009. - Class of 1945. Passed away Tuesday, 4 September aged 85. Bill was the youngest of four Sandiland boys who went through De La Salle. Older brothers Leo (1931), Jack (1936) and Kevin (1940), pre-deceased him. Our prayerful thoughts are with their family and friends.

I have registered with The Ride to Conquer Cancer and have joined thousands of Australians to help raise valuable funds for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. On the 27th and 28th of October this year I will be taking part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, a 200km bike ride in support of individuals, families and friends who have personally being affected by cancer. My families target is to raise $2,500 and above. We have currently raised 51% and all money has gone directly to Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for them to use immediately. Help me to help others! Student trial exams will be held for the majority of Unit 4 subjects from 2 October to 5 October, 2012. Students are expected to attend their scheduled exams as per the exam timetable (see page 6). This is an opportunity for students to gain valuable exam practice as well as giving them a real test as to where they are up to with their studies. All exams will be marked and feedback will be given to the students on their return for Term 4. Students must attend in school uniform and need to ensure they contact the school if they are unable to attend any of their exams.

On 9 August 2012 a Just BU "CareersAndU" Panel shared their career journeys, school experiences and advice with 180 Year 11 boys at De La Salle College in Malvern. Through the "live" panel format TV Presenter Glen Moriarty, The Sports Leadership Coach's Richard Maloney and MiGoals founder, Adam Jelic spoke openly and realistically about their personal career choices, their successes and disappointments along the way as well as the importance of finding a mentor, embracing the failures and being open to stepping stones along your career path. The students listened carefully to the stories, experiences and advice from the panelists and also had the opportunity to ask individual questions and meet with the panelists afterwards. Just BU founder Lisa Donath says, "I started Just BU because I wish when I was at school someone would have told me that all of the pressures and stress that I felt at that time was normal. By bringing together "real and raw" role models from the areas of sport, celebrity, business and community we are able to share our personal stories- the good, the bad and the ugly- with teenagers, acting as a catalyst for further discussion with their teachers, parents, experts or their peers." Just BU is a proactive program that provides young people with access to real role models sharing real stories, experiences and life lessons. First Communion will be celebrated at St Anthony’s Parish Glen Huntly on Sunday, 14 October. Last Sunday the candidates and their parents participated in a reflection day, commencing with Mass and followed by a rotation of activities and talks. Families will come together for a Home Mass which will be celebrated on the evening of Tuesday, 9 October at 7.30pm prior to the First Communion. Year 10 students are currently celebrating Mass in their Homeroom groups. The students have recently completed a unit on Eucharist in their Religious Education classes and have worked together to prepare the prayers, readings and music to celebrate Mass. As the term draws to a close, the whole school will assembly next Friday for our annual Social Justice Mass. Students are collecting food and personal items to assist those who depend on help from St. Vincent de Paul and St Kilda Mission. The liturgy planned will reflect on our interconnectedness and share responsibility as part of the global family. The theme for our Eucharist is the “power of one” person to make a difference in our world; in Australia; in our local community. Arts Week - Monday17 September to Friday 21 September Arts Week once again promises to be bigger and better than last year. The official opening with the Visual Arts Display is on Tuesday, 18 September at 7.30pm in the PAC. Awards will be presented at 8.00pm. The Annual Media Awards will be held on Thursday, 20 September at 7.30pm in the St Miguel Theatre.
The music department has loaded up on events during Term 3! We packed up 47 instruments, 30 music stands, 59 folders, 53 talented musicians, 6 excellent conductors and hit the road for Beechworth. This included the Concert Band, Stage Band, Choir, Guitar Ensemble and String Ensemble. We played 6 shows at 6 primary schools over 3 days in the Beechworth area. The stage band caused a mosh pit in two schools, who knew jazz was so crazy. Middle Indigo Primary gave us a spectacular conga line and a little preppy at Beechworth Primary told me she was about the cry because the music was so beautiful! We were treated to a performance by the Stanley Strummers. Stanley Primary School have 10 students in the whole school. They all play ukulele. They played and sang the Patsy Cline classic Walking After Midnight and it was about the sweetest thing you've ever heard. Our students were positive, passionate and were true gentlemen. They were focused on the music and presented every show with great energy. A massive thank you goes to our staff; Andrew Murrell, Kelly Williams, Jaymee Lee, Matt Lewin and David Reichman, for their talents and good humour.
On August 20, the Year 10 Event “Animal Instinct” featured a bunch of band performing in the PAC. The event raised over $300 for the RSPCA. Congratulations to the class for their fantastic efforts in presenting such a great night. The ACC Stage Band Day was also a huge success at Parade College. We won our third ACC Premiership for 2012 yesterday at MSAC with the Year 7A Basketball Team. The boys defeated Whitefriars 45 - 38 in a superb team effort helped by some sheer individual brilliance from Leon Lymbouris who scored 24 points. After being defeated in Round One of the season by Whitefriars, we went into the Grand Final as slight underdogs despite winning all other matches for the rest of the season. Although we held a slender 1 point lead at 1-2 time, with ten minutes remaining in the match we trailed by 7 points. The boys then went on 20 - 6 brilliant burst of basketball to claim a famous De La victory. The eight members of yesterday's ACC Premiership Team are: Aaron Trusler - Year 7R, Ben Wardle - Year 7D, Leon Lymbouris - Year 7B, Travis Gojak - Year 7D, Zach Patrick - Year 7H, Jordy Brasher - Year 7H, Tom Whitelaw - Year 7V, Ben Crowe - Year 7V. Year 7A Basketball Team
After winning 5 out of 6 matches for the season, our Year 9B Basketball team qualified for the ACC Grand Final at Dandenong Basketball Stadium on Tuesday, 4 September. Having defeated Parade by 34 points in round 4 of the season, we went into the match as warm favorites but had not played for two weeks due to the BYE in the final round. The Grand Final match proved to be a much tougher assignment than the round 4 clash, even though our boys lead for the entire match. Parade made a strong challenge midway through the second half but the boys rallied strongly to pull away for a convincing 15 point win, with a final score of 40 – 25. Held at Bundoora Park on Wednesday, 12 September, De La won 3rd place in the Overall Championships Trophy and improved on our score of 2011. Nathan Evans - Year 11M finished 2nd in the Open Division and was our best runner. Well done boys!
