visual arts online learning during COVID-19
Forward
T
he first day of Term two this year was like no other. With the world coming to terms with the unfolding health disaster of the COVID-19,
students around the country started their first day of term at home. No classes, no sport, no school formals, no school plays, no gatherings, nothing except isolation at home. Isolation or ‘iso’, as it became known, was the new way of life. Banned from outdoor activity and social gatherings we all looked to ways to spend physical, mental and creative energy within the confines of the ‘lockdown.”
The new-look school happened online with Microsoft Teams and Ollie delivering classes to our homes. But as the isolation continued, amazing things started to happen; art galleries and museums opened their collections online, the Rolling Stones entertained us from the comfort of their lounge rooms and we learned to adapt, even thrive in isolation.
As history shows, isolation can be a spark for acts of pure genius. During the 1600s, while The Plague ravaged Europe, Shakespeare wrote King Lear, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra in isolation. Isaac Newton while in isolation from a second outbreak of Plague discovered the theory of gravitation. We are witnessing how isolation can give rise to new social and artistic expression. This book showcases some of the creative talents of the art students at De La Salle College produced during isolation. Enjoy. Kerry Martin

Jean Dubuffet Drawing Assignment
J
ean Dubuffet was a French artist known for his unique drawing style which heavily utilised the art elements of line and colour (primarily black, blue and red). He also pioneered the art movement known as Art Brut which
translates to Raw Art. This movement included naĂŻve art which is made outside the academic tradition of fine art. It embraced the work of the mentally challenged, prisoners, children, and primitive artists. For Dubuffet Art Brut was the raw expression of a vision or emotions. Today we commonly refer to this type of art as outsider art or folk art. Students were asked to create a drawing using the style that DuBuffet worked in. Limited to 3 colours (red, black, blue) students explored the art elements of line, shape and pattern to create their drawing.
