EDITOR’S REPORT

Towards the end of Term 3, I was offered the position of Student Editor for this year’s Blue and Gold yearbook. The purpose of this position was to give student perspective to the Blue and Gold, an aspect missing in previous years. As Student Editor, I’ve helped shape Blue and Gold to better reflect and celebrate the people at its heart. I am truly thankful for the opportunity to engage with such an important aspect of De La Salle College and hope such a tradition will continue.

LEADERSHIP

From the Principal

As we conclude another busy year, there is a good deal to reflect upon, but even more to look forward to in the coming years. We are in a critical and exciting period of history at the College as we manage the transition from 110 years of ownership by the De La Salle Brothers to reimagining, rebuilding (literally) and redeveloping our facilities and programs under the ownership and direction of Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS). This is to be outlined in detail in our Master Plan, due for publication in late Term 4.

Much of our energy has been directed into the 2025-2028 Strategic Plan, covering four key themes – People and Culture, Operations, Offerings and Finance and Governance. Behind this Plan is the Vision for De La Salle College Malvern; to be a first choice of education for many families by 2028, providing consistently excellent learning and wellbeing outcomes in contemporary facilities.

A good deal of this year’s behind the scenes analysis, planning and strategic thinking has been directed at sustaining the future of the College, attracting future enrolments and providing the best facilities and optimum learning environment. Furthermore from 2026, the College will continue to provide outstanding education for Secondary years only from Years 7 to 12. Central to this is the question of how to maximise the effective use of our – at present – three campuses. At the time of writing, we are very close to finalising this and announcing a progressive and innovative new look for our school, which promises a significant improvement for the learning and recreational experience for all students.

I have been incredibly pleased with the way our staff continue to take the crucial steps to ensure the learning, wellbeing, spirituality and co-curricular offerings and outcomes for our students not only keep pace with our rapidly changing world but takes steps to keep ahead. Building on our Lasallian tradition, we use the power of positive relationships as the key driver in building character in our young men. This assists in developing that critical sense of belonging, facilitates academic improvement and instils responsibility. Central to our work is promoting a “way of being” a De La Salle student and how to demonstrate that. The ongoing integration of the wellbeing and academic programs enables us to build relationships first, then focus on pedagogy.

Next year, 2025 will be the final year for our Primary School, an integral feature of the College since our opening in 1912. The decision to move to a Year 7 – 12 school from 2026 means the 2024 Year 5s will be the final cohort at that level, before moving into 2025 Year as our last Primary class. While this is sad to see, it represents a new direction for De La Salle College, about which we are very excited.

In closing, I must thank each and every staff member for their respective contributions to what has been a tremendous year at De La Salle College, with too many events and achievements to mention here. A special thank you to the Executive Team and all those in Positions of Leadership for ensuring a quality, faith-based education for our wonderful students in a safe and supportive environment. To the students, thank you for all you bring to our College and the positive atmosphere you create in our school. I must also acknowledge the support, guidance and wisdom of the School Advisory Council, who are so generous with their time and expertise.

I wish all at De La Salle College a safe, happy and holy Christmas and thank you for making 2024 so enjoyable.

...our staff continue to take the crucial steps to ensure the learning, wellbeing, spirituality and co-curricular offerings and outcomes for our students not only keep pace with our rapidly changing world but takes steps to keep ahead.

From the Chair of the School Advisory Council

It is my pleasure to provide the De La Salle College Community with a report on the DLS School Advisory Council (SAC) activities for 2024.

The role of the SAC is: “… to give consideration to, and advice on, important school matters, to support the Principal, and the strategic interests of the College”. The Council comprises a talented, capable and dedicated group with a keen focus on the College’s wellbeing and sustainability.

In 2024 we welcomed several new members onto the SAC, each with an extensive range of experience. Patrick Green, Adrienne McLisky and Eliza Prideaux have enlivened the SAC meetings and contributed to a deeper level of advice to the Principal. Libby Barnes and Michael Skerrett stepped down from the SAC during 2024. Both were members of the former DLS Board and we thank them for their advice, invaluable insight, wise counsel and support.

In 2024, apart from providing input and support for the College’s mission, the SAC focused on key advice on future plans and capital improvements; strategic marketing; risk mitigation; and communications with the De La Salle Community.

As in previous years, the SAC would like to acknowledge Peter Houlihan, his brilliant Executive Team, and thank every College staff member for their efforts in 2024.

Lastly, at the end of 2024, Br Sir Pat Lynch, Paul Shannon, Allison Shannon and I will end our tenure on the SAC. It has been a privilege for us to serve the DLS Staff and Community. I wish you all the best for an exciting 2025.

THE COLLEGE EXECUTIVE

SAC focused on key advice on future plans and capital improvements; strategic marketing; risk mitigation; and communications with the De La Salle Community.

“Leading and managing a large boys’ school is an increasingly complex responsibility in the 2020s and I am very grateful for the outstanding commitment, combined skill set and overall expertise of our wonderful Executive Team at De La Salle College.

Séamus Scorgie is a tremendous ally and support for me in his role as Executive Deputy Principal. Séamus’ broad experience, his capacity to solve challenging problems and address complex issues in a calm and reassuring manner are enduring strengths.

Jess Alger has been superb in the execution of her critical role as Assistant Principal: Students. Her knowledge, skills, understanding, strength and empathy result in an incredibly efficient and supportive environment for our students.

Rob Bonnici is investing extraordinary time, effort and analysis into driving improvement in the levels of teaching quality and students’ learning outcomes. His work as Assistant Principal: Learning and Teaching is a key strength of the College.

As a Catholic, Lasallian school we are very fortunate to have the skills, experience, drive and ambition of Rana Brogan in her role as Assistant Principal: Identity and Mission. Keeping our faith relevant, engaging and contemporary for our students and staff is Rana’s great quality.

In the challenging role of managing a school’s finances Joe Gehrig’s wisdom, astute financial acumen and sensible decisionmaking has been of inestimable value to our team and the school in general.

Sandy Wreford is SO much more than my PA – the intrinsic, highly valued, all-knowing pivotal team member. Sandy is unfailingly supportive – advising and supporting me and my Executive colleagues.

Peter Houlihan, Principal

College Captains

My time as College Captain at De La Salle College has been one of great pride as well as a challenge alongside the demands of Year 12. When first entering the position, it came as quite a shock and was daunting at first especially during the storm of our final year; however, thanks to the support of my peers and staff at the College, I feel I have come a long way in my leadership ability.

A key aspect of being College Captain that I enjoyed the most was communicating with my peers not just in my year level, but across all year levels, enabling me to see a wide range of perspectives and to assist in issues which may have not been previously present in my school life.

Over the year, the position has required me to work on my time management and prioritisation of my commitments, which were an overwhelming aspect of the role. Throughout the year, it has been something that I have continued to work on and improve, enabling me to gain key skills both inside and outside of school life.

Overall, I have enjoyed the position and will be sad to vacate it. I wish the incoming Captains all the best in the year to come.

I began my journey as a De La Salle College Primary student in 2016. Over the past nine years, I’ve become involved in a wide range of school activities, adopted the values and teachings of St John Baptist De La Salle, and embraced all leadership opportunities.

Together, with my Co-Captains, I’ve connected with the entire school community by attending school productions, school and year-level assemblies, and participating in events at MAD and Founders Days along with other House and school initiatives. The highlight, without a doubt, were the podcasts I recorded with James McLisky and leaving the legacy of a handball target.

I have made so many memories this year and during my time at De La Salle College, and I encourage others to make the most of every opportunity. I will leave De La Salle College as a proud Lasallian.

Angus Gill, College Vice-Captain

My leadership journey at De La Salle College has been transformative, shaping me both as a student and an individual. Initially hesitant to take on a leadership role, the support from teachers and family encouraged me to embrace it. This decision opened countless opportunities, ultimately leading to my role as College Vice-Captain — a position I’m honoured to hold this year.

Representing my peers and upholding our College values has been a privilege. Balancing leadership with Year 12 has taught me resilience and essential skills, helping me grow as a leader and person. I encourage every student to step outside their comfort zone and pursue a leadership role; it builds skills that will serve you well beyond school.

I’m deeply grateful to the college for these opportunities throughout my time at De La Salle College.

James McLisky, College Vice-Captain

IDENTITY AND MISSION

Assistant Principal – Identity and Mission

2024 was a tremendous year for Identity and Mission at the College. A year that provided us with the opportunity to reflect and continue to create a future that is filled with hope, while living in the present moment in the presence of God. Our Staff Formation Day focused on providing staff with the opportunity to reflect on and share their unique journeys to becoming part of the De La Salle College, Malvern community. Staff examined pre-selected quotes from St John Baptist De La Salle, then looked more closely at the historical context of these quotes. The real challenge was to think about and consider how the quotes manifested today at De La Salle College.

I was privileged this year to have also had the opportunity to attend the annual Lasallian Leaders Gathering, hosted by St Michael’s College, Henly Beach in Adelaide. The Lasallian Leaders’ Gathering is an important event for school leaders to share best practice in Lasallian schools throughout the ANZPPNG District (Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Papua New Guinea). De La Salle College, Malvern will host the next district Lasallian Leaders Gathering in 2025, which we are very much looking forward to.

In our Lasallian world, we take both the example of Jesus and St John Baptist de La Salle and live them out in the three values that co-exist with our own: faith, service and community. We support one another by being the face of Lasalle and being the face of God to one another. This year, students from De La Salle Malvern and St Bede’s Mentone gathered for the Young Lasallians Evening in the St Miguel Theatre and reflected on the themes of value, faith, service and community. The opportunity to gather in this way was both a blessing and a privilege and reminded us that at the heart of being Lasallian is learning, prayer and building community.

Rana Brogan, Assistant Principal – Identity and Mission

We support one another by being the face of Lasalle and being the face of God to one another.

Welcome Mass

The De La Salle College tradition to commence the new school year with the Opening and Welcome Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral continues. A spectacular setting and the home of the Catholic Church in Melbourne.

This is a special occasion to welcome our newest College community members, and is also an occasion to recognise the importance of the centrality of faith to our Lasallian spirituality and what we are called to do as a Catholic community, when we gather in prayer. The Opening and Welcome Mass is an example of a proud and esteemed practice at De La Salle College, giving witness to the spirit and zeal of our founder St John Baptist de La Salle.

Mission Action Day

$77,000 raised in 2024

Mission Action Day (MAD), held on 28 March, once again stood out as a major highlight in the De La Salle College calendar. This annual day of solidarity brings the College community together, as all other activities are set aside so students and staff can unite in support of Lasallian communities in need. The event was much more than a symbolic 12 km walk in the sunshine along the beautiful Gardiners Creek Trail. Mission Action Day reflects the core Lasallian principle of service to others and serves as a major social justice initiative for students who support communities both locally and internationally, especially in Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea.

The cherished tradition of MAD dates back to 1980, when De La Salle College students first participated in a “Charity Walk” to raise money for those in need. This event has since evolved, and this year’s efforts raised an impressive $77,000 through the generosity of the College community. In the lead-up, students from all year levels engaged enthusiastically in various events including sausage sizzles, casual clothes days and “Zooper-Dooper” days, which helped raise awareness and encouraged involvement from across the College.

While all students are encouraged to contribute, some students go “above and beyond” making extraordinary efforts to maximise their impact. Each year, the top individual fundraiser is honoured with the Ian Oliver Mission Action Day Award. This year, the award was presented to Max Jones (Year 12), who raised an incredible $1,279. Other outstanding fundraisers were: Angus Stewart (Year 6) and Kit Saville (Year 7) with $800, Oscar Neopolitano (Year 11) with $780, Alessandro Paroli (Year 12) with $780, and several other dedicated students, all of whom showed exceptional generosity and commitment.

On a House level, St Edwin’s House raised the highest total, while the top Mentor Group was Year 9 Blackwell, guided by Ms Waddell, who raised $4,123.

The logistical efforts surrounding Mission Action Day are significant, managed by a dedicated team comprising staff from all campuses and the College’s Social Justice Student Leaders. The Mission Action Day Committee met weekly in Semester 1 to coordinate every detail, ensuring the event ran smoothly. Their dedication and hard work, often “behind-the-scenes” was much appreciated.

The De La Salle College, Malvern community can be proud of their efforts in ensuring Mission Action Day 2024 was a great success, in both raising much needed funds to help others and increasing awareness about being of service to those in need.

Being Lasallian

As Lasallian Captain, I have been incredibly privileged in being able to help make a difference within the community. Working alongside the College, we were able to raise money for the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office, represent De La Salle College at various events and raise awareness for social causes. As part of my role, I organised and processed food drive donations, which was memorable as the generosity of each De La Salle student resulted in dozens of bags of food being donated to those in need.

I’d like to thank Rana Brogan, Paul Roberts and Gerard Hill for their assistance in the Lasallian role this year, as well as fellow Lasallian Captains Simone Celon, Cameron Cochrane and Isaac Romanis.

Luka Peterson, St Austin’s House Lasallian Captain

My role as the St Edwin’s House Lasallian Captain has been extremely rewarding. It has helped me grow and expand my leadership skills whilst being able to do work. I am passionate about leading House charity events and getting involved with the wider community.

My position has challenged me to balance my academic and leadership commitments and has been beneficial to improving my time management skills.

Simone Celon, St Edwin’s House Lasallian Captain

This year as St Leo’s House Lasallian Captain, I’ve had the opportunity to attend many enriching events in association with the broader Lasallian community and MACS. I’ve also had the privilege to contribute to the planning and execution of various fundraising and charity initiatives.

The role has allowed me to collaborate with staff and students in a supportive environment, all united by a shared commitment to helping others. It has equipped me with invaluable skills that I’ll carry into the future. Being Lasallian Captain is a role that demands dedication and hard work, making it an integral part of the student leadership team at De La Salle College.

Cameron Cochrane, St Leo’s House Lasallian Captain

This year I have had the privilege of serving as the St Mark’s House Lasallian Captain. As Captain, you have the ability to meaningfully impact the school, but more so the community. Throughout the year, I have been involved in the organisation of Mission Action Day (MAD), St Mark’s House charity events, Winter Clothes Drive and the Food Drive. I’ve collaborated closely with other Lasallian Captains and Garard Hill, to ensure that these events help benefit the community as much as possible. I’ve also attended multiple events representing the school at St Patrick’s Cathedral and at De La Salle College.

This role has been deeply rewarding, allowing me to collaborate with others in the De La Salle community and contribute to its ongoing success.

Isaac Romanis, St Mark’s House Lasallian Captain

WELLBEING AND DEVELOPMENT

Assistant Principal – Students

The 2024 school year has been filled with energy and excitement at De La Salle College. The College is committed to ensuring that every student finds a way to engage with their passions and interests. This year offered a variety of memorable experiences, from sporting events and excursions to the Year 12 Formal and the Year 11 Social. We also came together to raise funds for Mission Action Day and honoured the legacy of St John Baptist de La Salle on Founder’s Day.

The calendar was packed with activities, including ballroom dancing, school productions, and friendly competitions with neighbouring schools. Throughout each day, the school buzzed with conversations and laughter, reflecting the vibrant community spirit that defines De La Salle College.

Like any large and diverse community, we faced challenges along the way. With students and staff bringing a wide range of experiences and viewpoints, it became clear how important it is to support one another and engage in respectful, open discussions. Fostering inclusive and respectful relationships remains a priority, and the College is committed to ensuring students feel safe, supported, and connected as they grow.

It has been inspiring to witness the personal development of our students as they uncover their potential and demonstrate increasing maturity.

A heartfelt thanks goes out to our dedicated staff, including mentors, Coordinators, Directors of Students, Heads of Campus, and support personnel. Special recognition also goes to our Health Centre Team, Psychologists, and reception staff, whose efforts ensure the smooth operation of all three campuses and provide essential care and support to students.

As the Assistant Principal for Students, I want to highlight the contributions of our students. They are truly remarkable young people who motivate everything we do. Together with the support of parents and guardians, we aim to shape these students into responsible and capable young men, preparing them not just for the present but for a future that extends far beyond our time.

Jessica Alger, Assistant Principal – Students

GROW

The GROW (Growing Responsibility for my Own Wellbeing) Program has achieved remarkable progress at De La Salle College throughout 2024. The educators spearheading the initiative have devoted their time, knowledge, and experience to refining the program, ensuring it meets the unique needs of students at every academic level.

Recognising the evolving nature of students’ social, emotional, and psychological needs from Year 5 to Year 12, the program is designed to support their development at each stage of their school journey. Its primary aim is to nurture students’ growth, provide guidance, and equip them with the skills necessary to sustain mental and physical well-being, foster a positive mindset, and contribute meaningfully to both the College community and the wider world.

GROW offers a well-rounded framework that integrates positive education, respectful relationships, sexuality and consent education, mental health, cyber safety and organisational skills. This comprehensive approach addresses essential life areas, helping students develop critical qualities such as selfawareness, perseverance, commitment, help-seeking behaviours and a clear sense of purpose. Collaborations with external organisations, including Project Rockit, Toolbox Education, Elephant Ed and Road Safety Education, ensures that students gain the most current knowledge and tools for managing their wellbeing, mental health, and academic responsibilities.

“...focusing on the holistic development of students to prepare them for the challenges of modern life.

The GROW Program embodies De La Salle College’s dedication to fostering an all-encompassing educational experience. It emphasises the importance of going beyond academics, focusing on the holistic development of students to prepare them for the challenges of modern life.

LEARNING AND TEACHING

Assistant Principal – Learning and Teaching

The journey of learning and teaching is a dynamic and transformative experience at De La Salle College. Dedicated staff have worked tirelessly to create an environment that is both engaging and challenging, ensuring that every student is supported as they embark on their educational journey. This has been evident throughout the year, as we have seen students participate in numerous excursions, expanding their classroom knowledge into real-world learning opportunities.

From the moment our students step through the doors as young boys, they are met with a curriculum designed to ignite curiosity and foster a love for learning. The integration of technology makes lessons more interactive and relevant to the modern world. This approach not only enhances academic understanding but also develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Throughout their time at De La Salle College, students are encouraged to explore their interests and talents, whether in academics, sports, arts or community service. Our comprehensive curriculum is tailored to meet the diverse needs of our students, providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in an ever-changing global landscape.

As they grow, our students are guided by a team of passionate staff who are committed to their holistic development. The support and mentorship provided play a crucial role in shaping our students into well-rounded individuals. By the time they leave the College, they are not only academically prepared but also equipped with the values and confidence needed to make meaningful contributions to society.

I would like to extend my gratitude to all the school staff for their unwavering dedication and hard work. Their efforts in developing a curriculum that is both engaging and challenging have been instrumental in our students’ success.

Congratulations to the graduating Class of 2024! We are incredibly proud of your achievements. You arrived as young boys and leave as young men, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact you will make in the world.

Students are encouraged to explore their interests and talents, whether in academics, sports, arts, or community service.

Science

At De La Salle College, our aim has always been to nurture a love for Science, from Primary years through to VCE. From learning about the solar system to exploring how how the brain interprets taste and vision, and understanding the reactions that occur at a cellular level, our Science program helps students continually deepen their understanding of the world around them.

Our Science program also encourages our students to engage with the societal issues they face and their impact on both local and global scales. It’s a joy to work alongside such an incredible team of passionate and dedicated Science educators who ensure students are actively engaged with science at every level. To every Science teacher at the College – it is a privilege to work alongside you, thank you.

Neurons are constantly fired throughout the body, as are the cognitions of scientific phenomena, that in many ways have guided us in discovering our passions in Science.

Technology (STEM)

This year, STEM at De La Salle College has driven hands-on exploration, creativity, and practical problem-solving across all year levels.

Year 11 Systems Engineering students tackled real-world challenges by integrating solar-powered lighting into their designs, while Computing students delved into AI applications and cybersecurity, expanding their understanding of emerging technologies. Year 9 STEM students connected classroom learning with sustainable practices through a wind farm visit and developed design skills by creating 3D-printed chocolate molds.

Meanwhile, VCE Product Design & Technology students showcased functional, innovative projects at the College Art Show. These experiences reflect the strong foundation STEM provides for future-focused learning and innovation at the College.

Warren Walker, Learning Area and Team Leader – Technology

English

English and Literature at the College extends far beyond teaching students to read and write proficiently. It is how students are introduced to ideas about their world. They learn to think critically about these ideas and practise how to articulate their thoughts to others in both written and spoken mediums.

One of the key principles that underpins English at the Junior School is that students learn best when they are engaged in the content. For this reason, students are given autonomy over the choice of text that they study through the Lit Circles and Wide Reading at the junior years. This philosophy is continued through a choice of English Elective in the Middle Years that sit alongside the shared experience of Core English. By the end of their time at the College, regardless of whether a student has chosen to study English or Literature, and regardless of the path that they have taken to get there, they are ready to move out into the world as critical thinkers and effective communicators.

Literature at De La Salle allows us to explore deeper meanings, utilising skills taught throughout our schooling career to explore texts through a historical lens and in a self-reflective manner.

Flynn Kenworthy, Year 11 Literature

English is the bridge to understanding the world. It allows us to explore new ideas, share our voices and connect with people from different cultures.

Ethan Burgess, Year 8 English

Mathematics

Bertrand Russell’s quote, “Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth but supreme beauty,” resonates strongly in today’s world, reminding us that mathematics is far more than just a set of rules or numbers.

At De La Salle College, we deeply value the significance of Mathematics in education, providing our students with exceptional resources and opportunities to support their academic growth. Mathematics holds a prominent place within our College, and we actively promote it through a variety of extra-curricular activities that enrich our Mathematics Programs.

Our students enthusiastically engage in a wide range of enriching opportunities, including the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition, the Australian Mathematics Competition, the Melbourne University Mathematics Competition, the MAV Statewide Mathematics Games Day, the City Maths Trail, after-school Maths Help, the Old Collegians Tutoring Program and the Gifted and Talented Education Program for Years 7, 8, and 9.

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all students who participated in these outstanding programs, demonstrating their dedication and passion for Mathematics. My sincere appreciation also goes to the staff members who generously volunteered their time and effort to make these opportunities a reality for our students. Looking ahead, I am excited about another year filled with a wide range of activities and remarkable achievements in the world of Mathematics at De La Salle College.

Humanities

Studying Humanities subjects like History, Geography, Legal Studies and Politics provides secondary students with invaluable benefits, equipping them with essential skills and perspectives. These disciplines cultivate critical thinking and a profound understanding of the world, empowering students to become informed, compassionate citizens.

Geography offers insight into environmental issues, sustainability and global interconnections, vital in today’s world. Legal Studies and Politics empower students with knowledge of their rights, responsibilities and how societies function, preparing them to engage with political systems and advocate for positive change. Together, these Humanities subjects enhance communication, research and problem-solving skills, which are essential for success across diverse career paths.

Our Humanities students experience dynamic, hands-on learning. Geography students have participated in fieldwork within a diverse range of environments: Gardiners Creek (Year 7), Brighton Beach (Year 8), Melbourne CBD (Year 9), Docklands (Year 10), Kinglake (Year 11), Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct (Year 11) and Fishermans Bend –Montague (Year 12). Politics students were able to test their public speaking skills at the Brighton Grammar Model United Nations excursion, while Legal Studies students gained unique insights during a ‘Meet the Judge’ incursion. History students also had the memorable opportunity to speak with a Vietnam veteran, deepening their understanding of a pivotal time in modern history.

Humanities has it all! This department offers a well-rounded, engaging approach to learning, equipping students with tools that will benefit them for a lifetime.

Our Humanities students experience dynamic, hands-on learning.

Languages

This year has been truly memorable for the Languages Department, as it introduced a wide range of exciting activities for all students studying French and Italian.

Year 7 students enjoyed an energetic Languages Day, featuring French boot camps and Italian dance workshops, which introduced them to both languages and cultures. Year 9 students immersed themselves in Italian and French culture on Conversation Day, complete with crêpes, gelato, quizzes, karaoke and bocce, with Team Italy emerging as the winner.

Year 10 students also engaged in enriching activities, from Italian gnocchi-making workshops to a French film screening. VCE French and Italian students savoured authentic meals at Franco-Belge and Made in Casa.

The highlight of the year was the French Study Tour to New Caledonia, where sixteen students experienced the language and Kanak culture over an unforgettable nine-day trip.

Alexander Yep, Learning Area Team Leader – Languages

My favourite part of Italian this year was learning how to make gnocchi with Chef Andrea.

Xavier Cataldo, Year 10

The French-Belgian restaurant outing gave us a greater appreciation for French and Belgian cuisine, whilst improving our French skills with the chefs and restaurant owners.

Joey Valcanas, Year 12

Commerce

This year saw exciting developments in the Commerce program, with a range of hands-on learning opportunities and projects. Students in VCE Business Management applied their knowledge through practical activities such as the Market Day Stalls, where they worked in teams to develop business plans and run their own ventures. The event was a great success, contributing to the variety of activities on Founder’s Day, with profits supporting the Lasallian Foundation.

In addition, literacy development remained a key focus across Commerce subjects. Targeted teaching strategies helped students strengthen their ability to apply key concepts and respond effectively to task requirements, particularly at the VCE level. Overall, 2024 has been a highly productive and successful year for Commerce, with students gaining valuable skills and experiences.

Health and Physical Education

2024 has been another exciting year in Health and Physical Education at the College, with students engaging in classes both on and off campus. Our students have participated in activities such as golf, gymnastics, swimming, lawn bowls, tennis, strength training, and many others that complement learning across all areas of the curriculum.

Health and Physical Education continues to play a vital role in the development of student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing. At De La Salle College, students are better able to connect theories and knowledge to realworld situations based on their experiences in these classes. Our curriculum also encourages and enables our students to be physically active and develop lifelong healthy lifestyle skills.

We promote the mindset that we view movement and physical activity as an opportunity, rather than an inconvenience. The benefits of movement, along with improved health and wellbeing, extend across all learning areas.

Going out to Melbourne Golf Park in Albert Park was the highlight for me.

A great way to learn target games.

Will Wood, Year 10

Drama

This year, Drama has flourished with new staff, experiences, and resources. Our Senior Drama studio now features updated lighting, sound equipment, curtains, and stage blocks, giving students hands-on experience in programming lighting and sound to enhance their performances. Students in Years 10-12 can explore technical roles, learning to manage lighting and sound desks directly in class.

Across all levels, we have seen impressive showcases: from primary mimes and migration stories to Year 7’s commedia dell’arte, Year 8’s improvisations, and dynamic solo and ensemble work from our Senior students. Highlights from these performances were featured in two showcase evenings held at our PAC.

George Arthur – Drama & Productions Coordinator

Music

The Music Department delivered a diverse program in 2024; the Primary Strings Program (led by Mr Tedford), the Year 7 Band Program (led by Ms Block), the Year 8 Contemporary Music Program (led by Mr Serrano), the Year 9 Music Elective (led by Mr Lee) and Year 10 Music Performance, Year 10 Sound and Lighting, and VCE Music Solo Performance (led by Mr Serrano).

Highlights included performances by Year 10 class bands at Founder’s Day, some fabulous original compositions composed by Year 9 and Year 11 students, and the establishment of our new Tech Crew which grew out of the Year 10 Sound and Lighting course. The two Junior Concerts featuring the Year 7 Class Bands were again a highlight of the Performing Arts calendar.

Luke Serrano – Music Coordinator

VET

GATE

In 2024, De La Salle College students embraced a diverse range of Vocational Education and Training (VET) opportunities, both at the College and through various Registered Training Organisations. The College continues to offer valuable programs, including Building and Construction (Carpentry) and Sport and Recreation, where students gain practical experience in construction projects and event management. Additionally, students pursued external certificates in fields such as Plumbing, Electrical, Music Sound Production and Cyber-security, reflecting the dynamic job market. This year’s VET program has empowered students with practical skills and opened pathways to either full-time employment or further studies in their chosen fields.

The GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Program at De La Salle College supports students in Years 7–9 who have been identified as gifted or talented. It provides a space for them to set goals and work through tasks tailored to these objectives, focusing on harnessing their strengths as learners and fostering growth in identified areas.

Students within the program will participate in fortnightly GATE sessions that see them engaging in collaborative problem-solving tasks, and working toward a series of externally run competitions. I look forward to continuing to mentor our teams in the coming years.

Georgia Dobel, Gifted and Talented Education Coordinator

Vocational Major

The VCE Vocational Major has made a significant impact in its inaugural two-year cycle, with students successfully transitioning from Year 11 to Year 12 in 2024. Each student has embarked on a unique educational journey, completing core subjects while also engaging in tailored Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs. These students have had the opportunity to select units in VET Hospitality and participate in Structured Workplace Learning Arrangements and School-Based Apprenticeships with a variety of employers across different industries.

Throughout the year, students have actively participated in various excursions and incursion activities designed to enhance their learning experiences. Notable experiences included mock interviews facilitated by external professionals, Safe at Work programs and training for essential certifications such as the White Card, Scaffolding and Working at Heights. Additionally, students attended industry expos and participated in a Performance Mindset workshop led by Old Collegian Anthony Klarica, which aimed to foster resilience and motivation among participants.

Beyond their vocational training, VCE Vocational Major students also engaged in their school’s sports programs, GROW classes aimed at personal development and social justice initiatives. They contributed to programs such as RUOK? Day, which promotes mental health awareness, Mission Action Day focused on making a difference, and Founder’s Day, celebrating the school’s history and community.

Their experiences reflect a commitment to not only their personal and vocational growth but also to enriching their school community and broader societal values.

This year’s cohort has demonstrated remarkable diversity in their potential employment pathways and the personalised VET training they have pursued. Their experiences reflect a commitment to not only their personal and vocational growth but also to enriching their school community and broader societal values. This inaugural progression sets a positive precedent for future VCE Vocational Major students, showing the multitude of opportunities available through vocational education.

Debating

This year, our Year 10 and Year 11 teams participated in the Debating Association of Victoria (DAV) competition, with both groups showcasing remarkable growth in their speaking and teamwork skills.

The Year Ten Team, featuring Fin Howells, Lincoln Patten, Thomas James, Henry Dwyer, Aahaan Mody and Joe Jackson, developed their arguments and rebuttals through active discussions, gaining valuable experience in debate structure and presentation. The Year Eleven Team—Rory McMillan, Christian Petrides, Jerry Dong, Stanley Trilsbach, Geordie Tsirigotis and Archie Carrington— excelled in constructing persuasive arguments, finishing atop the Caulfield region and ranking in the top 27 out of 251 schools in the C Grade DAV competition.

Georgina Dwyer and Christine Thompson, Classroom Teachers

Visual Communication

This year, our design students have demonstrated exceptional creativity and resilience, producing innovative projects that reflect their unique perspectives and adaptability.

Their commitment to pushing boundaries and embracing new technologies has not only showcased their remarkable talent, but also positioned them as key contributors to the ever-evolving design landscape.

Christine Bassili, VCE Visual Communication Teacher

DAV Debating was a truly fulfilling and enjoyable experience that taught me a great deal about various topics, the format of debating and how to work as a team to properly debate our ideas.

Religious Education

De La Salle College continues to provide students with a Religious Education Curriculum that is vibrant, engaging and academically challenging. The importance in engaging students in a curriculum at a time where our posttruth world requires them to engage ever more critically when it comes to ethical decision-making and moral decision making in a meaningful, relevant, and hope filled, Lasallian lens.

Students across all year levels participated enthusiastically and responded positively with guest speakers on Reflection Days, and the feedback during debrief sessions with group leaders on key topical themes and ideas was insightful and reflective, often indicating a mature level of perception and discernment. The student-led Thursday morning liturgies in the Kinnoull Chapel continue to be a highlight that offer the students an opportunity for quiet prayer and reflection.

Library

The Library team—Robyn Stark (Library Leader), Clare Kennedy-Curtis (Teacher Librarian), Jack McLardie (Library Technician) and Bek Livera (Library Technician) — work hard throughout the year to ensure the College Libraries are a vibrant and welcoming space for the school community.

The primary role of the library is to support the reading culture of the school. During their library lessons, Year 7 and 8 students were encouraged to suggest a book for the collection and approximately 80% of these have been added to the shelves. These improvements are designed to encourage students to choose a book that is one they want to read, and so far, this initiative is proving to be a success.

Tiverton Library was abuzz during Book Week with the theme “Reading is Magic”. Students in particular loved the Escape Room as they raced around the library in teams solving puzzles. The Book Quiz was also popular and hotly contested.

Robyn Stark, Library Leader

I loved the Escape room, it was fun to work with my friends.

Jack and Aidan

The library is a great place to be with my friends at lunchtimes –we play games like Uno or Connect 4 or catch up on our homework.

TIVERTON CAMPUS

Director of Students –Middle School

It has been a privilege to lead our Year 5 to 8 students at the Tiverton Campus through a year of growth, achievement and memorable experiences. Their enthusiasm, dedication and willingness to embrace new opportunities have made this year truly special.

The support of our Year Level Coordinators and Classroom Mentors has been key to fostering our College values on the Tiverton Campus. Each morning, mentors have provided positive routines that set the tone for a productive and focused day. By promoting respect, organisation and strong work ethic, they have created an environment where students can succeed both academically and personally.

Our students have shone brightly in both sports and the arts. Their commitment to representing the school with pride was evident in Australian Catholic Colleges (ACC) competition. In the arts, students have displayed remarkable creativity, with standout performances in recent music and drama productions, as well as an impressive visual art exhibition earlier this year.

Student leadership has also flourished. Tiverton leaders represented their peers with maturity and dedication at conferences and school events. Their involvement has greatly improved the culture of our school. The Student Wellbeing committee has also made meaningful contributions to the wider school community.

Memorable events such as the Year 5, 7 and 8 camps across Victoria and the Year 6 Canberra Tour allowed students to build friendships, develop independence and create lasting memories. Excursions to the Botanical Gardens, Brighton Beach, Gardiners Creek and visits to Menzies Malvern provided opportunities for students to step out of the classroom for some realworld learning. GROW incursions have tapped in to social and emotional learning at the College. These experiences, along with the consistent reinforcement of our campus themes, have created an environment where students can thrive.

I am incredibly proud of everything our students and staff have achieved this year, and I look forward to seeing even more success in 2025.

Susan Kiernan. Director of Students – Middle School

Tiverton leaders represented their peers with maturity and dedication at conferences and school events.

Tiverton Leaders

This year as Tiverton Captain, I have been lucky enough to participate in many activities based around leadership. For example, leadership retreats, Menzies Malvern community outreach, College tours, leadership conference, meetings, primary assemblies, parent info nights, helping out with primary athletics and international leadership workshops.

I am very grateful that I have had the opportunity to be involved with these activities, as they have benefited me in many ways helping to improve my public speaking, enhance my leadership skills and help with my confidence.

It has been a good year and I would very much like to be involved in leadership again if we could have the success and enjoyment that we had in 2024.

Being the Vice Captain of the Tiverton Campus has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me. It has given me the opportunity to work closely with my peers and teachers and to be a role model for younger students. I have learnt the importance of responsibility, leadership and teamwork, and have had the chance to organise and participate in events such as community outreach at Menzies Malvern, welcoming new students to the school, and even meeting and talking to people halfway across the world.

The role has also taught me valuable lessons in communication and decision-making. Overall, being Vice-Captain has been a privilege that has helped me grow personally and academically, and has allowed me to give back to my school community.

Lancaster, Tiverton Vice-Captain

This year as Tiverton Vice-Captain has been an unforgettable journey. From the leadership retreat to leading assemblies and parent information nights, every experience has helped me grow.

I enjoyed representing the school at Menzies Malvern and engaging with the residents, and the leadership conference was an inspiring opportunity to connect with other young leaders. Conducting College tours and organising primary assemblies gave me the opportunity to showcase our values and contribute to its strong sense of community.

It’s been a year full of growth, learning and making meaningful connections, and I’m grateful for all the support along the way.

Mackintosh, Tiverton Vice-Captain

Primary Camp

– CAMP LYREBIRD –

Our much-anticipated trip to Camp Lyrebird finally arrived, and the energy on the bus was buzzing as we made our way out of the city toward the adventure ahead. As we got closer to camp, the bus stopped near Puffing Billy and we enjoyed some morning tea. Finally, we arrived at camp! As soon as we arrived through the gates, we knew it would be an amazing experience, with the soccer pitch, trampolines, huge cabins and even more awesome stuff waiting for us!

We settled into our cabins and then went for a bushwalk with Warren while Chen Lou cooked up some delicious chicken for lunch. During our free time, we played many competitive matches of football. After dinner, we had showers, and my team won a trivia competition.

We woke up the next day to a lovely breakfast and many activities including archery, rock climbing, orienteering and team-building games. The rock climbing was fun, filled with adrenaline, and the teamwork activities encouraged a real sense of camaraderie. Around the campfire, we cooked damper and roasted marshmallows, which provided a sense of warmth and happiness. Later, we enjoyed a movie and some snacks, making the night fun for all.

After another night of beauty sleep, we packed and prepared to head home. Some of us felt sad to leave, while others were happy. We said goodbye and set off for the big trip home.

This year has been fantastic, filled with exciting excursions, sports events, and enjoyable classes. The inclusive and supportive atmosphere has made everyone feel welcome and valued.

Matteo Miller, Year 5

During my first year at De La Salle College, I was excited about all the sports I was able to participate in. I had my footy lightning premiership and experienced my first camp. I’m excited for next year!

Lincoln Batucan, Year 5

My first year at De La Salle College was interesting; it was very different to my old school. There was a lot more homework, a fancy winter uniform, and, even better, a lot more sport. There were opportunities to try almost every sport imaginable. The sport uniform was a dream to wear, and the teachers were amazing.

Ben Kato, Year 5

My first year of De La Salle College was a super amazing year, thanks to all the sports, excursions, science classes, and the canteen food on Fridays. Thank you so much to all the teachers for all the fun and learning.

Leo Fitzpatrick, Year 5

I really enjoyed this year at De La Salle College. I participated in a football premiership, nearly reaching the final. I also attended my third camp, but my first as a Lasallian. The teachers were kind and understanding and I received my first academic award. I also made many more great friends.

Year 6 Reflections

My De La Salle Year 6 experience has been my best year of education yet! All the activities were fun, interesting and fulfilling. I’d like to thank my teachers and learning supporters for helping me through Year 6. Some of those teachers are Mrs Michael, Mrs Lennon, Mr Quinn and Mrs Green. This year was the best!

Luca Goulding, Year 6

My year at De La Salle College has been good. I have learnt lots of new things and had a good time with my friends. My favourite event was the Bizarre Bazaar where we made a product and a stall and sold our products. My group made t-shirts and hats and put logos on them. We raised $110 for charity. I also really enjoyed the Canberra tour.

Ben Pearson, Year 6

My experience in Year 6 so far has been amazing. I was new this year and my class were very welcoming. The classes have been fun and the excursions have been exciting- especially going to Canberra for three days. The teachers here have been very helpful and open-minded. Overall, this year has been a wonderful experience.

James Scheggia, Year 6

My year at De La Salle was the best. I made new friends, learnt lots of new things and played lots of fun games. I liked going on excursion with my class to St Kilda Football Club. I loved Science Week, especially the “Decorate your Cookie” part as I loved putting tonnes of lollies on top. My highlight of the year was the trip to Canberra.

Year 7 Reflections

This year at De La Salle College has been incredible! The transition was smooth, thanks to friendly classmates. Year 7 Camp was a highlight, filled with fun and exciting activities. I’ve enjoyed learning a new instrument that I thought I could never play and engaging in new classes, making new friendships that I cherish and will remember for a long time.

Yiani Tsakirakis, Class Captain – Year 7 Hegarty

What I loved about Year 7 was that being Class Captain was a very fun role for me and it was good to meet new people. A highlight of the year was definitely Lord Somers Camp. The activities were unreal and we had a great experience.

James Wright, Class Captain – Year 7 Jerome (Term 1 and 2)

In Year 7, I embraced my role as Class Captain by supporting my peers. The transition into College brought new challenges, but my teachers made the journey easier. Their guidance inspired us to grow, making this year a memorable mix of friendship, leadership and learning. I am looking forward to 2025 at De La Salle College.

Xavier Zagari, Class Captain – Year 7 Solomon

Transitioning to high school was both exciting and daunting. The journey truly began with the Welcome Mass at St. Patrick’s, marking my first steps as a Year 7 student at De La Salle College. Highlights like riding the waves while paddleboarding with friends and sharing late-night laughs in our cabin during Year 7 camp made the experience unforgettable. Choosing an instrument, meeting my music teacher, and performing in the Junior Music Concert before our families and friends added to the thrill, even with the inevitable musical jitters. Along the way, I met incredible teachers who have pushed and encouraged me, making this new chapter of my life so much smoother. Above all, one of the best parts of joining De La Salle College has been the lifelong friendships I’ve made.

AJ Leota – Seiuli Seufatu, Class Captain – Year 7 Jerome (Term 3 and 4)

Year 7 Camp

– LORD SOMERS –

The Year 7 Camp at Lord Somers in Term Two was a wonderful and adventurous experience. Students participated in a number of activities including stand up paddleboarding, screen printing, kayaking, bush walking, experiencing Indigenous culture and lots more.

Highlights included a walk along the beach to the historical homestead and wetlands of Coolart, where students stepped back in time to explore the 1907 homestead mansion and old shearing sheds. They were also immersed in Indigenous cultural learnings about traditional bush food, plants, and animals.

The camp activities and initiative games enabled students to build on teamwork, appreciation and enjoyment of the outdoors, and provided the space to communicate and support each other. Friendships were forged, and students returned having learnt valuable skills to be more resilient and to lead and communicate with confidence.

Year 8 Reflections

I enjoyed Year 8 at De La Salle College for its exciting challenges and and my newfound independence. The teachers encouraged my curiosity, while the many diverse subject choices sparked my interests. Building friendships through schoolwork and extracurricular activities made every day memorable, creating a sense of belonging that made learning truly enjoyable.

Alec Heffernan, Year 8 Benilde

Throughout Year 8 in De La Salle College, I have been very happy to say it has been a fun, smooth and learning-filled experience. Everyone was able to explore different parts of the School’s programs and build skills for future years. Some favourite memories include phsyical education, science dissections and the music program.

Will Messner, Year 8 Hegarty

Year 8 at De La Salle College has been very enjoyable. When it comes to the classroom, teachers ensure that you are maximising your potential by giving you both challenging and rewarding tasks. Outside of the classroom, lots of great friendships and experiences are formed. Activities like camp and ACC Sport are great ways that we have built true connections with our peers, whilst also creating very memorable experiences. Some of my highlights of this year have been physical education, science dissections and ACC sports.

Enzo Santoso, Year 8 Roland

Experiencing Year 8 at De La Salle College has been a journey this year, from Mission Action Day to camp earlier in the year, ACC teams and the Food Drive. Our classroom has been an educational and enjoyable learning environment. My personal favourite classes included GROW and Science. We can’t wait to take on Year 9 with our new tools we’ve learnt over the year.

Max Flavel, Year 8 Dunstan

Wow, Year 8 in De La Salle College has been a ride! From starting the year shaking at my knees while presenting my Captain’s report in Headstart, it has been a wonderful year for learning new skills, socially and mentally. Thanks for the opportunity to be the Class Captain of 8 Jerome this year.

Jordan McVey, Year 8 Jerome

Year 8 at De La Salle College was a fun experience with lots of twists and turns. Going from Year 7 to Year 8 was a challenging task but it was very rewarding. Throughout the course of the year, my peers and I learnt many new things inside and outside the classroom. At De La Salle, everyone discovers their passions—whether in the classroom learning subjects like Maths and English, exploring music through a new instrument, or participating in co-curricular activities such as Sport. De La Salle offers a wide range of opportunities, making it a fantastic place to learn and grow.

Tom Rhodes, Year 8 Solomon

Year 8 Camp

– WONGA PARK –

At the beginning of Term 2, our excited cohort of Year 8 students boarded coaches and mini-buses for a three-day, two-night outdoor experience at Clifford Park Activity Centre in Wonga Park. Whilst only 50km from school, the camp is set amongst picturesque Warrandyte State Park and the Yarra Valley.

We were greeted by Wurundjeri Elder Murrindindi, who formally welcomed us to Country, and taught us the history of the area, including that of his great uncle Wonga.

Students were presented with activities that challenged each boy to step outside of their comfort zones, and to work together and encourage one another to experience success. Hiking up and over Mount Lofty, rock climbing and abseiling in Whipstick Gully, learning bush survival skills and navigating a fun and challenging obstacle course were all highlights.

“Students were presented with activities that challenged each boy to step outside of their comfort zones, and to work together and encourage one another to experience success.

Arguably the most popular activities were the mountain bike riding and the white water kayak activities. Students grew in confidence as they traversed over challenging terrain such as logs, tree roots and rocks. The boys partnered up to lead an open water kayak down rapids in the Yarra River.

The Year 8 students are to be congratulated on the way they immersed themselves in all aspects of the camp, gaining confidence and resilience throughout and forming and strengthening friendships.

HOLY EUCHARIST CAMPUS

Head of Campus Year 9

The 2024 Year 9 cohort may be slightly smaller than in previous years, but their enviable energy and palpable passion have the potential for far-reaching impact for the future.

Year 9 represents the critical intersection between Junior and Senior education at De La Salle College. For parents, it can often feel like a minefield. Your son is navigating the complexities of adolescence, a period marked by significant emotional, social, and psychological development. At times, this journey can be challenging. This is a time of self-exploration, where students begin to discover more about who they are, what motivates them, and what they value. Key programs from external providers such as The Man Cave, Toolbox, Elephant Ed, Success Integrated and the Pat Cronin Foundation have helped deepen our student’s understanding of themselves. Additionally, we’ve prioritised positive well-being through both the GROW program and our homegrown WISE platform.

At Holy Eucharist Campus, our team of Year 9 specialist staff regularly stress the importance of providing a safe environment for learning – one in which risks are openly encouraged. Year 9 students are urged to “roll the dice” with their learning; be open to learning from failure; and through these experiences, gain deeper insights into their strengths, weaknesses, passions, and areas for growth.

As our Year 9s continue to develop a greater sense of independence, responsibility and perseverance – skills essential for success in Senior years and beyond –I would like to acknowledge the invaluable support of parents and caregivers. Stepping back to allow your son to grow and become more independent can feel counterintuitive, but in doing so, you have empowered him to take greater responsibility for his learning and build self-sufficiency.

We believe our Year 9 program provides students with a vital foundation— academically, socially, emotionally, and personally. Each of these aspects will be critical as they face the challenges and opportunities of Kinnoull and beyond.

David Alexander, Head of Campus Year 9

This is a time of self-exploration, where students begin to discover more about who they are, what motivates them, and what they value.

Holy Eucharist Leaders

In 2024, De La Salle’s Year 9 WISE initiative has continued to grow stronger. This customised program aligns with the Year 9 mission of fostering independence and resilience, while recognising students for commitment, challenges, and personal growth.

WISE stands for Wellbeing, Independence, Service and Expedition.

PROUDLY CHALLENGING

21ST CENTURY

WISE STUDENTS

Wellbeing: Students engage in an eight week, goal-orientated Discovery (HPE) task that challenges them to achieve a sustained improvement in their health.

Independence: Equips students with essential life skills for the 21st century – skills that are often overlooked but are crucial to their future.

Service: Reflecting our mission “to walk along Gods Path”, students were encouraged to think about how they can make a difference in their local community. Providing voluntary service in their own time has been a valuable learning experience.

Expedition: This year’s 80km, fourday paddle along the Murray River was a true test of teamwork, cooperation, and resilience, often requiring students to overcome adversity.

The WISE Award comprises a competitive element that invites students to strive for the highest level of completion throughout the academic year. There are two levels of distinction: Silver and Gold. If you see a WISE badge on a student’s blazer, take a moment to commend them on their ability to capitalise on their learning through active participation.

David Alexander, Head of Campus – Year 9

Year 9 Learning and Teaching

Learning at the Holy Eucharist campus strikes a balance between preparing students for the academic challenges, rigour and pathways of Senior School and VCE/VM, while fostering a unique, inquiry-based, experiential learning environment. This single year level approach offers students a distinctive educational journey at De La Salle College.

Alliance and Ingenuity, our flagship cross-curricular subjects, exemplify this approach. These subjects offer students the opportunitiy to engage in projects that integrate multiple disciplines and provide real-world learning experiences, such as city-based problem-solving tasks.

A highlight of the Year 9 program is the project-based learning week, which allows students to develop transferrable skills that extend beyond the academic space. This week also encourages students to explore their passions, fostering deep engagement and a genuine love for learning.

Year 9 Reflections

Year 9 in 2024 has really been a different one, with many new experiences and approaches. The WISE program, explored throughout the year is something that has been great for myself and my peers. The aspects of wellness, expedition, independence and service have really pushed me, but also have given me the opportunity to learn a lot about myself.

Harry Fryar, St Leo’s House Captain – Year 9

A clear highlight of Year 9 was our four-day expedition on the Murray River. We paddled for 74km and saw plenty of wildlife, all while building resilience and learning valuable life skills. There was extreme heat that impacted our sleep schedule and cooking. Through this hardship, we got to know each other a lot better, creating some memories that we will never forget. The experience helped me learn how to persevere through challenges and has helped me become a better leader.

Tom Powell, St Edwin’s House Captain – Year 9

Coming into the year, I wasn’t sure what to expect. All I knew was that the learning experience would be different, and there was only one year level on the campus. It’s weird to think that was now 10 months ago.

My favourite part of this year was getting to know all the students better. I became closer to my friends but became even closer with some of the people I didn’t know as well through Year 7 and 8. This helped us become more connected on the sports field, as we made the hockey grand final and won the first debating premiership for the campus.

My advice for the Year 8s this year is to enjoy the time with your friends because it goes quickly! Establish study techniques that you can use throughout the rest of your schooling and lastly, please win a sport premiership. You’ll be the first year level to win it for Holy Eucharist and I know Mr Jones is waiting to lift that flag!

Elijah Ho, Holy Eucharist Captain – Year 9

One of the standout moments for me in Year 9 was the fundraising day. Hosting the BBQs and bringing everyone together for a good cause truly helped to develop and strengthen our cohort. Additionally, having a separate campus this year allowed me to get to know our year level better and form closer bonds. It was a year filled with growth and connection.

Cash Bateman, Year 9

This year has opened my eyes to leadership. Unlike previous years at the College, when you become a Year 9 leader, you’re awarded a lot of freedom and trust to plan events such fundraisers and create a lasting impact. Being a leader at Holy Eucharist has taught me so much, and I am incredibly grateful for the privilege to serve in this role at the campus.

Josh Pope Environmental Captain – Year 9

The Year 9 Campus has a program which leads us through the transition of becoming young men. We took part in the WISE program, which involved doing a number of things, including service hours. By completing these hours, we gave back to our community, all while teaching us about commitment and independence.

KINNOULL CAMPUS

Director of Students –Senior Years

Involvement, enthusiasm and service to others; three key qualities that shone brightly across the Kinnoull Campus in 2024. The vibrant House System at Kinnoull continued to be the foundation for fostering a strong sense of community. Divided by House, united by spirit, the four houses engaged in various carnivals and lunchtime activities throughout the year, continuing their friendly rivalries but also fostering House pride, spirit and identity.

The GROW Personal Development Program continued to be a cornerstone of the College’s wellbeing curriculum. By imparting vital 21st-century skills and covering various wellbeing topics, it continues to prepare students for holistic growth. Collaborations with external agencies enriched the program with evidence-based insights and practical skills. The "Big Brother, Little Brother" sessions involving the Year 11 and 7 students were particularly impactful, creating cross-year connections that emphasised inclusivity and mutual learning, especially for Year 7 students adapting to their new environment.

The Year 10 Cape York Immersion offered an enriching experience during the Term 2 holidays. In collaboration with Red Earth, this lived immersion exposed students and staff to an authentic Indigenous experience whilst fostering a deeper understanding of Australian geography. It was an opportunity for personal growth, promoting teamwork, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity.

Social events like the Year 12 Formal and Year 11 Social at the beautiful Merrimu Reception in Terms 2 and 3 allowed students to celebrate their academic journeys and build lasting friendships. Similarly, the Year 10 Dance Program with girls from Star of The Sea in Term 1 was a fun way for students to connect and learn to dance, fostering new friendships in an enjoyable environment.

Finally, heartfelt thanks to the dedicated Kinnoull staff, whose unwavering support has been invaluable to the students throughout the year. Their commitment to nurturing the young men in our care is deeply appreciated, making Kinnoull a truly special community.

“By promoting respect, organisation, and strong work ethic, they have created an environment where students can succeed both academically and personally.”

Year 10 Reflections

As Year 10 Captain of St Austin’s House, I participated in the Nathan Burke Leadership program, where campus leaders received valuable leadership advice from a former AFL legend/AFLW coach. Through the program, we learnt how to build a positive atmosphere for the students on campus and I gained valuable insights that will guide me throughout my leadership journey.

Thomas James, St Austin’s House Captain – Year 10

As the Year 10 St Austin’s House leader, I have been fortunate enough to experience a wide range of co-curricular activities.

A highlight was my participation in the De La Salle Gambling Podcast where we spoke and listened to the story of a person who had suffered the unfortunate consequences of addiction. It was an eye-opening experience that allowed me and my peers to gain real insight and advice while also providing the gambling-impacted guest a platform to share their story, possibly steering listeners away from gambling.

Lincoln Patten, St Austin’s House Leader – Year 10

Engaging in the Gambling podcast showed me a new layer of understanding of how a podcast is produced and how the magic happens behind the scenes. What resonated with me the most was talking to someone with lived gambling addiction experience, and understanding the damage it can cause. This experience left a long-lasting impact on me and I am forever grateful that I was able to take part in it.

Ross Cochrane, Year 10

A highlight for me this year was the Leadership Forum Day with Stonnington Council. It was inspiring to hear from local leaders and work alongside my peers to develop skills in teamwork, communication and community awareness. This experience helped me feel more connected to the broader community and motivated me to lead.

Another standout moment this year was the Year 10 Dance Program with Star of the Sea College. The program offered so much, from learning new dance steps to building confidence in social settings. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with others, develop teamwork skills and share many enjoyable moments while practising together.

Louis Gordon, St Edwin’s House Leader – Year 10

This year, I joined our school’s Year 10 Debating Team. Over five debates, I learnt a wealth of new information about the topics as well as about the process of debating itself. The experience was truly fulfilling, and when we won our first debate, I felt extremely proud of our team.

Finn Howells, Year 10 ACC Debating

Year 10 Dance Program

Year 11 Reflections

This year, participating in ACC sport was a highlight for me, especially in footy and cricket. The excitement of the games and the bonds formed with teammates will be something that I will cherish for years. Despite both teams losing their semi-finals, the inclusive environment which we created made every moment worthwhile.

Zac Chapman, Year 11

This year has brought upon many highlights. The De La Salle Podcast on Gambling saw students interviewing experts and victims in the field, whose wise words helped shine light on the dark dangers of gambling and it’s harmful targeting of youth. Meeting former St Kilda Captain Nathan Burke was a great honour, as he brought along fantastic advice on everyday leadership and challenged our ideas of what makes a great leader.

Luca Yannas, Year 11

This year, I really enjoyed ACC Soccer. It was a great opportunity for the boys to bond, especially between the Year 11s and Year 12s. It brought out De La Salle’s competitive spirit and made the season exciting and memorable.

Tom Rogers, Year 11

The House Athletics Carnival was my favourite memory from this year at De La Salle College. I really enjoyed participating in all the events with my friends. The sense of camaraderie was incredible. We supported each other and grew closer as a house and as friends.

Nicholas Karavangelis, Year 11

Preparing and rehearsing with various music ensembles across the school was a highlight for me. It was a great way to connect with students from different year levels, from Year 7 to Year 12. Performing together gave us a shared sense of unity and accomplishment.

Max Schroder, Year 11

This year was a fantastic time for making new friends. My friend Olly Anthony and I have been close for awhile, and this year we welcomed many more friends. It’s been great to see our school foster a culture where building new friendships comes so naturally.

Charlie Morris, Year 11

Year 11 Social

Year 12 Reflections

Looking back, the Year 12 Retreat wasn’t just a fun getaway—it was a moment that really brought us all closer. Spending that time with my friends made me appreciate how much we’ve all grown together over the years. I’ll always remember it as a reminder of how important it is to cherish the people and memories that make these school years so special.

Niki Rayzman, Year 12

The year had its ups and downs at the start, but thanks to the helpful advice, unwavering support, and patience of my teachers—and those who always believed in me and had my back— I was able to come through and can honestly say it turned out to be a great year.

Raphe Buxton, Year 12

Shout out to Mr Roberts for organising the trip of a lifetime to Cambodia, and to Mr Yep for all his hard work and dedication to making sure we had the tools to succeed in French.

Ronin Lew, Year 12

When I look back on 2024 at De La, it’s the people that stand out the most. They’re what made it such a great place to be. Whether it was in class, or playing soccer on the Astro field, or just hanging out around the campus, everyone, from students to teachers, played a part in making it a year to remember.

Ben Ley, Year 12

Looking back on 2024, I’ll always cherish the connections I made through all aspects of school life, especially in music and drama. School has provided me with bountiful opportunities to grow and to connect with people I might not have otherwise. These memories and friendships will stay with me forever.

Skyler Sahely, Year 12

Reflecting on the Year 12 Formal, it was such a fun night where we all got to dress up in suits and celebrate with our mates. The atmosphere was lively and full of energy—shout out to the musicians and music department for keeping the vibe going all night!

Conor MacNamara, Year 12

Final Day on Campus

French Study Tour to New Caledonia

During the first week of the April Holidays, I was among sixteen students, ranging from Years 10 to 12, who embarked on a nine-day French Study Tour to New Caledonia. Our trip aimed to enhance our French language skills and deepen our understanding of the local French and Melanesian culture.

One of my highlights was visiting Amédée Island. Despite some rainy weather, we were able to snorkel and observe the sea life and coral reefs. We also had a behind-thescenes tour of the Aquarium des Lagons, gaining insights into local marine conservation efforts.

In addition, we savoured a variety of traditional New Caledonian dishes at local restaurants, including seared tuna steaks and shoe-string fries. One of the highlights was the cooking class, where we learnt to make bougna, a traditional Caledonian dish. We even learned to weave baskets from banana and coconut leaves. Our use of the French language became part of our daily interactions, whether it be chatting with local students and or navigating the bustling Noumea market.

Exploring Noumea through guided tours in the city and cultural centre bridged our classroom learning with the area’s rich history and architecture. During free time, playing sports on the beach and swimming at the hotel provided perfect ways to unwind. The trip was not only enjoyable but also immensely beneficial for our French skills. A special thank you to Mr Alexander Yep, Ms Emma Hart and Mr Rob Bonnici for organising and accompanying us on our trip.

Cameron Cochrane, Year 12

HeadingFar North Queensland Immersion

During the Term 2 holidays, students and staff from Kinnoull and Holy Eucharist travelled to Cape York, where they embarked on a week long immersion at Yungee, a remote Indigenous community 400km north of Cape Tribulation.

Students and staff learnt from our Indigenous hosts how to craft and use a Bull Roarer, a communication tool with a history spanning thousands of years in the region. They were also taught the art of fishing with a hand line in the Starcke River and learnt to make and throw spears for hunting. Before arriving at the community, students raised funds to build new garden beds and contributed by painting the new camp kitchen.

Students were treated to a traditional Kup Muri feast on their final night, a beautiful banquet of food cooked underground on hot coals. The trip concluded with a memorable visit to the Barrier Reef, where students snorkelled amongst vibrant sea life. The visit to this area enabled the students and staff to further deepen their understanding and appreciation of First Nations people and their culture.

Heading Cambodia Immersion

The Cambodia Immersion formed a vital part of the College’s Lasallian Social Justice focus for 2024 and provided an opportunity for Senior students to be involved in helping and learning about our Cambodian neighbours.

This was achieved through immersion into daily life, giving concern for the poor, and respecting the dignity of all through our interactions with children and young people whose lives have been impacted by poverty and HIV/AIDS.

The group started the Immersion in Siem Reap, taking in the breathtaking Temples of Angkor, learning the history of the ancient Khmer Empire, and experiencing modern culture through a homestay in Isanborei, a remote community in Kampong Thom Province.

We then headed to Kampong Speu Province to live and work with the community of ‘NHCC’ (New Hope for Cambodian Children), where children impacted by HIV/ AIDS are supported by the generosity of donors and volunteers to help them live happy and healthy lives.

In Phnom Penh we volunteered at ‘Sunrise Cambodia’, an Australian organisation founded by Geraldine Cox AM, with a focus on Cambodia’s most vulnerable children and the communities in which they live. The experience created lasting memories for everyone involved.

Hope and Positivity

Another wonderful year in St Austin’s House, basked in yellow, the colour of hope and positivity. Reflecting on my time with the boys of St Austin’s fills me with such pride. Seeing each mentor group in the morning and standing at my office door to say goodbye to the students as they leave for the day are moments that always bring a smile to my face. Our Mentor Challengers were a remarkable success, showcasing the creativity of our leaders, who consistently introduce fresh ideas to keep the vibrant spirit of Austin’s alive.

The "Walking" Competition and six-way down-ball brought us countless laughs. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the St Austin’s House Mentors — Matt Whitty, Alex Yang, Halid Takimoglu, Warren Bardsley, Georgia Dolbel, Thomas Le and Mel Livera — for their genuine care and dedication to our boys. I am also deeply grateful to our St Austin’s House Leaders — Oliver Maher, Liam Murphy, Mack Higginbotham, Luka Peterson, Daniel O’Kane, and Luke Bosnich — for their enthusiasm and commitment to creating a warm and welcoming environment. Additionally, I acknowledge Tom Rogers, Luca Yannas, Thomas James, and Lincoln Patten for stepping up as Year 10 and 11 leaders, bringing great ideas and passion for enhancing the House.

Once again, the elusive House Cup slipped through our fingers, but we celebrated meaningful victories, including the trophy commemorating our Year 12 Reconciliation Football Match win for 2023 and 2024. Serving as House Coordinator for Austin’s has been an absolute privilege; the spirit and warmth within Austin’s House are the true victories for us.

Angela Runci, St Austin’s House Coordinator

In 2024, I had the privilege of serving as House Captain for Austin’s! While we may not always be celebrated for big wins, I genuinely believe Austin’s is the best house. The culture I joined in Year 10 has been a constant highlight of my Kinnoull experience, and I’ve cherished every moment. Whether it was taking part in mentor group challenges or being greeted by supportive Mentor teachers, there was always a sense of community. A special thanks to Ms Runci, whose door was always open for a chat and a laugh.

I’m incredibly grateful to the friends I’ve made along the way, who’ve offered support and encouragement through one of the most challenging years, Year 12. I believe that if you stay resilient and don’t give up, it can truly be the best year of your life!

Oliver Maher, St Austin’s House – Captain

This year in St Austin’s House has been truly special, and I’m grateful to have been a part of it. Even without any first-place trophies, our success has come from a shared dedication and strong sense of unity, guided by Ms Runci’s unwavering commitment as our House Coordinator. Her leadership, along with the support of our mentor teachers and supporting staff, has inspired us all to push our limits and work together. I have witnessed incredible talent displayed in both the arts and sports, with many opportunities bringing out the best in us, showing that true achievement isn’t just about winning. This year has been about building memories, fostering an inclusive House culture, and celebrating each other’s efforts — proving that Austin’s greatest strength is our togetherness.

Liam Murphy, St Austin’s House – Vice-Captain

HOUSE CHARITY ACTIVITIES

In 2024, St Austin’s House made a concerted effort to help support the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office. From 17 to 21 June, Austin’s House ran a variety of events to help raise money and awareness for the charity, including the annual ‘Detention for Detention’ on the 19 June. We also received a testimonial about the experiences of being a refugee from staff member Ms Nguyen, and held a BBQ and Choc-a-Block to help fundraise for the charity.

These efforts were able to raise funds for the ACMRO and raise awareness for the plight of refugees.

Determination and Teamwork

2024 was a great year to be an Edwinner!

This year, we celebrated victory at the House Swimming Carnival, a testament to our students’ determination and teamwork. Numerous students received awards for academic achievement and endeavour, reflecting our shared dedication to excellence and personal growth. Beyond academics, our hosting of the Winter Sleepout and Christmas Hamper raffle allowed us to raise significant funds for St Vincent de Paul, highlighting our dedication and commitment to social justice.

I’d like to thank the wonderful students of St Edwin’s House as each and every student has contributed to the positive, compassionate, and supportive culture in our House. Our incredible mentor teachers have been instrumental, providing guidance and encouragement as students navigate academic and personal challenges. Together, we’ve cultivated an environment that values growth, resilience, and empathy.

Looking forward, we will continue building on our commitment to teamwork, social justice and leadership, ensuring St Edwin’s House remains a space for academic success, personal growth and support.

To our 2024 Leadership Team – Joseph Valcanas, Laurence Dell, Liam Campitelli, Simone Celon, and Oliver Walsh-Dummett – thank you for your energy, dedication and inspiring leadership. Your legacy will have a lasting impact. Ever and onwards!

Ebony Doherty, St Edwin’s House Coordinator

Amongst our greatest achievements this year was the return of the Edwin’s Winter Sleepout after a number of years, with Year 12 students having the opportunity to sleep overnight at Kinnoull to once more raise money and awareness for those struggling with homelessness.

2024 has been a fantastic year for our House, and it has been a privilege to have led St Edwin’s alongside my fellow leaders and Ms Doherty. I am sure that our 2025 leaders will continue to raise the level in St Edwin’s House!

Joey Valcanas, St Edwin’s House – Captain

What an amazing year for St Edwin’s House! In my role as House Vice-Captain, I have had the honour of participating in and overseeing various significant House events and initiatives. Major highlights included the House Athletics Carnival, House music events, weekly lunchtime competitions, and of course, the House Swimming Carnival due to our amazing victory. It was amazing to see the dedication, participation and effort given from all year levels.

I have deeply enjoyed my time in this role and I am grateful for the opportunity. I have no doubt that the 2025 leaders will continue to bring success to our amazing House.

Laurence Dell, St Edwin’s House – Vice-Captain

HOUSE CHARITY ACTIVITIES

This year, St Edwin’s House has demonstrated an inspiring commitment to social justice through a variety of meaningful initiatives. We organised and hosted the annual St Edwin’s House Winter Sleepout, where 26 Year 12 students spent the night outdoors, raising funds and embodying our dedication to social justice through action. Our students showed incredible initiative, with many leading activities to raise money for MAD, including selling Zooper Doopers during lunch and collecting cans for recycling. Our Christmas Hamper Raffle was another standout success, generating significant funds for the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. We are proud to have donated over $1,200 to St Vincent de Paul this year. These efforts highlight our House’s dedication to caring for others and making a tangible impact in our community. Thank you to all students who contributed to these initiatives, living out the values of compassion and service that define St Edwin’s House!

Creating Memories

Over the last 12 months, St Leo’s House has created lasting memories and continued to form a positive culture. Leo’s House Captain, Lachlan Grey, and his leadership team provided exceptional guidance, inspiring the House to thrive both academically and personally. Their leadership fostered a strong sense of community and purpose, uniting students in a shared commitment to excellence.

The Year 12 Retreat was pivotal for many, as Year 12 students formed even closer connections, allowing for deep reflection and a chance to strengthen friendships. The bond within the House grew stronger as they prepared to face the year’s challenges together and set an example for the younger students.

The House also ran a highly successful fundraising campaign for their charity, Caritas. The campaign not only raised a significant amount of money but also showcased the generosity and compassion that defined the students of St Leo’s House. A standout moment was winning the House Cup for the second consecutive year, going back-to-back. This victory was a testament to the dedication and spirit of the entire House. As the year drew to a close, the House came together to celebrate their achievements, proud of the memories made, the bonds formed and the legacy they would leave behind.

Throughout 2024, the participation and enthusiasm towards House events from all the St Leo’s students has led to the House having a successful year in both sport and academic achievements. We were unfortunate to miss out on winning House Athletics Day by 1 point but came through to win House Cross Country.

The culture within Leo’s in 2024 has been phenomenal with every Leo’s student doing their part to make 2024 an enjoyable year for all. The passion and camaraderie built this year will hopefully be maintained for years to come.

Lachie Grey, St Leo’s House – Captain

As a proud leader of St Leo’s House, I can confidently say that we foster a positive culture of camaraderie and brotherhood, where we uplift one another to achieve greatness in every personal endeavour. Transcending across all year levels, this culture is unique to St Leo’s and has greatly contributed to our recent success. We celebrate and reward persistence and resolve, encouraging others to embody these virtues. Above all, our House embraces excellence and humility, upholding the St Leo’s motto, "Strength and Honour", which reflects our collective belief that greatness is achieved together.

Sebastien Chettibi, St Leo’s House – Vice-Captain

HOUSE CHARITY ACTIVITIES

This year at St Leo’s House we have been fortunate enough to have a cohort that has been readily willing to engage in the numerous fundraising activities available within our school and in our own House.

Chief among these activities being the footy tipping competition which this year offered a number of prizes with the proceeds going to Caritas Australia. Thankfully former Year 12 St Leo’s student, Luke Lloyd, was generous enough to offer up a signed Brisbane Lions guernsey as our first-place prize. This demonstrates that even after graduation St Leo’s students exemplify the Lasallian nature to go out of their way to help others.

Claiming Victory

The year began on a high note for St Mark’s House, claiming victory in the House Athletics Carnival for the second consecutive year, narrowly defeating St Leo’s House. It was the outstanding participation and unwavering enthusiasm of our students that led us to success. I encourage all St Mark’s students to continue building on this momentum as we aim for a third straight win next year!

Social justice lies at the heart of our Lasallian, Christian tradition, and this year St Mark’s House has focussed on supporting our House charity, Opening the Doors Foundation. Sports Colours day was our primary fundraiser, along with the Mother’s Day stall in the Primary School. Additionally, our year-long container collection initiative helped raise an impressive $500 from items that would have otherwise ended up in landfill.

Our students once again participated with enthusiasm in both the House Swimming and Cross Country events, with our runners performing strong performances in the latter. The lunchtime House competitions were fiercely contested, and I extend my appreciation to everyone involved, especially our House Leaders, who worked tirelessly to support these events.

A heartfelt thank you to the Year 12 St Mark’s students for their contributions throughout their time at the College. I wish you all the very best in your future endeavours. Special thanks to our House Leaders, Alessandro Paroli, Hugh Florance, Jordan Genovese, Isaac Romanis and Christian Persichelli – for their outstanding leadership and passion.

I also extend my gratitude to the St Mark’s House Mentors, whose dedication and support of their mentor groups have been invaluable. Be The Change!

Andrew Wozencroft, St Mark’s House Coordinator

An ‘honourable privilege’ is not nearly as strong a phrase as I would use to describe the immense opportunities and life-changing experiences that came with being the St Mark’s House Captain for 2024. After witnessing first-hand, the effects of camaraderie and diligence in winning back-toback athletics carnivals, I figured those same traits could be replicated to achieve the coveted three-peat and, as predicted, they were.

The House Fundraisers, such as the Mother's Day Stall and Sports Colours Day, saw vast contributions from the St Mark's boys, such as promoting the events as well as donations to our House charity, the Opening the Doors Foundation. These generous efforts ultimately led to us raising considerable amounts of money for our House charity, which will be used to improve the quality of education and improve the opportunities for education for First Nations children.

I have nothing but optimism and faith in the 2025 leaders going forward. I encourage you to take what you can out of the Class of 2024, but also to never shy away from the challenges that will certainly arise in life. Embrace the journey as you gain invaluable knowledge along the way.

Paroli, St Mark’s House – Captain

Serving as the Vice-Captain of St Mark’s House in 2024 has been an unforgettable experience, marked by exciting victories and testing challenges. Leading our House to multiple wins has been both rewarding and fun, with my favourite memory being our triumph in athletics at the start of the year. That victory really highlighted our hard work and determination as a House. Working alongside an amazing leadership group and dedicated staff has made this journey even more special. Together, we’ve built a strong sense of community that I will cherish for years to come.

Hugh Florance, St Mark’s House – Vice-Captain

HOUSE CHARITY ACTIVITIES

This year, St Mark’s House has embraced social justice through a strong focus on supporting our House Charity, Opening the Doors Foundation. Sports Colours Day was our main fundraiser, and the Mother’s Day stall in the Primary School added a special touch to our efforts. One of the highlights of the year was the container collection initiative, which not only raised $500 but also helped reduce landfill waste. These activities have been a rewarding way to make a difference while working together as a House to support those in need.

Isaac Romanis, St Mark’s House –Lasallian Captain

St Mark’s House

House Sport Coordinator

2024 saw St Leo’s House aiming to go back-to-back in their quest for House Cup, and given how tight the competition was last year, it was sure to be a close race. For the third consecutive year, we had different House winners for each carnival. Congratulations to St Mark’s House for winning the Athletics Carnival, St Edwin’s House for taking out the Swimming, and St Leo’s House for dominating the Cross Country.

Lightning Premierships continued for our junior campuses, with St Austin’s House victorious in Year 7, St Edwin’s House in Year 8, and St Mark’s House in Year 9, showcasing once again how evenly spread the competition was throughout the year.

It was fantastic to see the Lunchtime Activities Competition engage students across all year levels, and it certainly had an impact on the outcome of the 2024 House Cup. This year also saw the continuation of the Year 12 Reconciliation Cup, where Year 12 students played a modified version of AFL 9s. Congratulations to St Austin’s House for winning this trophy for the second year in a row – I’m excited to see how this competition evolves in the future.

A huge congratulations to St Leo’s House for winning the 2024 House Cup. This is the back-to-back victory marks the beginning of what could be a dominant run. To Emma Fairclough, Trent McGuire, Lachlan Grey and the rest of the St Leo’s House student leaders, well done on an outstanding effort and good luck for 2025.

Finally, a massive thank you to all the House Coordinators, Assistants and staff who helped throughout the year, especially Angela Runci, Ebony Doherty, Emma Fairclough and Andrew Wozencroft. There is no way I could have completed my role successfully without all your wonderful help. I will be stepping down in my role as of next year and just wanted to say thank you to everyone at the College for providing me with this opportunity.

Ryan McDonough, House Sport Coordinator

For the third consecutive year, we had different House winners for each carnival.

House Athletics

Could we see a three-peat? Would St Leo’s be able to avenge the agonising loss in 2023, or would St Austin’s or St Edwin’s take over the Athletics crown? These were the questions leading into the 2024 Carnival at Lakeside Stadium, and the competition certainly didn’t disappoint. It came right down to the wire with St Mark’s House securing the three-peat, while St Leo’s came in an extremely close second.

Will we see a four-peat? Can St Leo’s reclaim the crown? Or will St Edwin’s or St Austin’s rise up the standings? 2025 is shaping up to be a cracker of a carnival, so be sure to come down next year and support the students throughout the day!

The results were as follows:

1st St Mark’s House

2nd St Leo’s House

3rd St Edwin’s House

4th St Austin’s House

Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved throughout the day. Bring on 2025 and another hotly contested carnival!

House Swimming

A five-peat was on the cards for St Edwin’s and a five-peat was what they achieved. It has been an incredible run of dominance from St Edwin’s House has seen them take a stranglehold on the swimming competition and the question being asked is how they will ever be stopped? With just over 100 points separating all four Houses it was the most hotly contested carnival yet.

This year saw us move back to the home of De La Salle College Swimming, Harold Holt! It was an unbelievable day that was very well contested throughout. Can St Edwin’s continue their winning streak and achieve six in a row? Will St Leo’s be able to put an end to their dominance? Or will St Mark’s or St Austin’s win the title?! Tune in next year to find out! The results were as follows:

1st St Edwin’s House

2nd St Leo’s House

3rd St Mark’s House

4th St Austin’s House

An outstanding effort by everyone involved, in what was a great display of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

Ryan McDonough, House Sport Coordinator

House Cross Country

The Cross Country Carnival was held in Term 2, with conditions being perfect for the students to put their perseverance and determination to the test!

St Leo’s House were looking to continue their dominance of the event having not lost for the last few years. An extremely tight contest saw St Leo’s win the title again! It was another tight contest with results being separated by no less than 60 points separating the four Houses! Congratulations to St Leo’s House on another fine win.

The results were as follows:

1st St Leo’s House

2nd St Edwin’s House

3rd St Mark’s House

4th St Austin’s House

Congratulations to everyone who participated and thank you to all the staff that helped make this event such a great one. Ryan McDonough, House Sport Coordinator

Sports Captains

St Austin’s House has created a fantastic environment for both sports and academics. This year has been amazing. We took home the Year 12 football tournament, excelled in senior soccer penalties with an intense battle with St Leo’s House, and triumphed in dodge-ball amongst other events.

The teamwork and spirit in our House have motivated us to do our best in every competition. We are proud of what we’ve achieved and look forward to more exciting moments ahead.

Go Austin’s!

Mack Higginbotham, St Austin’s House – Sports Captain

This year, I played a key role in encouraging participation at both the House Athletics and House Swimming carnivals. My primary focus was to inspire students to get involved, motivate them to try their best and ensure everyone felt supported. Whether it was cheering from the sidelines or encouraging students to take part in events they might not have considered, I aimed to make these experiences fun!

On campus, I would always take the time to help the junior students, even if they had a slight concern or question, to make sure their De La Salle College experience was as positive as possible.

Hugo Sheedy, St Leo’s House – Sports Captain

Being part of the 2024 leadership team and immersed in the sporting department has equipped me with a range of invaluable skills, which I will be able to use in the future.

I was lucky enough to work alongside an incredible group of fellow leaders in St Edwin’s House, and helped start initiatives that will hopefully become ingrained in the culture and spirit of St Edwin’s House. One example includes this year’s Christmas Hamper fundraiser, which raised a significant amount of money for a worthy cause.

I hope that this incredible culture will continue for many years to come.

Liam Campitelli, St Edwin’s House – Sports Captain

As St Mark’s House Sports Captain, I had the privilege of coordinating teams for House Sports competitions. I worked alongside a fantastic leadership team to win the House Athletics Competition, organise events, motivate participants and create an energetic atmosphere that gave me a strong sense of pride and accomplishment. It was about building camaraderie, driving enthusiasm and feeling the fulfillment that comes from contributing to something meaningful for others and myself. The experience has been rewarding, helping me develop essential skills and showing me the value of dedication and teamwork — qualities I’ll carry forward with confidence.

Christian Persichelli, St Mark’s House – Sports Captain

ACC Sport

2024 has been a year of continued success for De La Salle College, as we built upon the solid foundation established last year. Our sporting community has grown, particularly at the Junior levels, with large numbers of students eager to proudly represent the College by wearing the Blue and Gold. The increase in team numbers, especially in Junior basketball, Middle Years cricket, and Senior soccer, has been a highlight. This growth has been reflected in strong performances across numerous sports, with many teams reaching the Finals throughout the year.

Our Senior teams have been central to the College’s sporting success, showcasing strong performances across all three ACC sport seasons. Among the standout achievements, the 20Twenty Cricket team clinched the Premiership, while our 1st teams in Tennis, Hockey, Football and Soccer all advanced to the semi-finals. In Golf, our Senior Team secured an impressive 4th place in Division 1 and our 2025 Year 7-10 Golf Team emerged as champions in the Division 1 Championship. In the ACC Championship events, our teams gave a strong performance. The Cross Country Team successfully retained our Division 1 status for 2024, a testament to the dedication and hard work of our athletes. Additionally, we saw impressive individual performances, with two Senior students being awarded Most Outstanding Student Athlete in their respective sports. Congratulations to James McLisky (Cricket) and James Hillemacher (Hockey) for not only leading their teams as captains but also for their exceptional performances throughout the season. Both students were also named to the ACC Teams of the Year, along with:

Jack Traianedes, Jack Gibson, and Tali Ngaluafe (Swimming)

Mack Higginbotham (Football)

Zane Maillard and Henry Docherty (35-over Cricket)

Ben Miller and Zac Barling (T20 Cricket)

Aeden Nelson (Tennis)

Kai Lucas (Basketball)

Mack Harris (Hockey)

A heartfelt congratulations to these impressive young men for their achievements and dedication.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the coaches at De La Salle College for their outstanding efforts in 2024. Their commitment has played a vital role in the success of our sporting programs. I would also like to acknowledge the staff who assisted with managing these programs, dedicating their time to support the students during early morning and afternoon sessions at the pool, track and nets. Without the generous contribution of time from these staff members, we would not have been able to run such a comprehensive sporting program, particularly those facilitated by external coaches. I am deeply grateful to everyone who helped make these opportunities possible for our students.

Finally, I would also like to thank all the families for ensuring their sons were ready and present for these sporting sessions. Your ongoing support is essential to the continued success of our programs, and we look forward to another exciting year of sport in 2025.

Excellence is not a singular act but a habit. You are what you do repeatedly.
Shaquille O’Neal, NBA basketball player

ACC Chess

At De La Salle College, our Chess Club brings together a dedicated and talented group of chess enthusiasts. Every Tuesday and Friday at lunchtime, students show their commitment and excitement for the game. Chess at our College has grown to include both traditional and virtual formats, leveraging platforms like Tornello Tournaments (thanks to Kids Unlimited), allowing us to connect our three campuses seamlessly. This advancement has enriched our College’s chess landscape, fostering a vibrant sense of community and strengthening House spirit through spirited matches.

This year, we proudly participated in the prestigious ACC Tournaments, competing in Open, Junior and Intermediate events. Our journey continues with the launch of the Immersion Chess program, which has been particularly popular among our Junior levels, promising a bright future for chess at De La Salle. Beyond the game itself, chess has proven invaluable in promoting students’ social wellbeing, offering them a shared activity that builds friendships, encourages teamwork, and enhances social skills. Through chess, our students develop resilience, patience, and confidence—all vital aspects of their personal growth and social development.

Sporting Achievements

TALI NGALUAFE – ACC SWIMMING

Hi, my name is Tali Ngaluafe. I started swimming at nine years old in Queensland, learning to swim before joining a club and competing. I love that swimming involves more than just the pool – it includes gym work, strength training, and nutrition to enhance performance. Highlights include representing De La Salle College at the State Championships this year, placing 3rd in the 50m butterfly, and competing in state meets with my club, MLC. As part of a Swimming Australia program, my performance is tracked at every meet. For me, swimming is about striving for personal bests and evolving goals with my coaches. I’m proud to represent De La Salle College.

BEN MILLER - T20 CRICKET

Cricket has been my passion from a young age, and representing De La Salle College has been incredible. From playing Milo cricket to my first match with Burwood, and representing ECA at the Under 16 Rep Carnival, to joining the Under 16 and 18 Victorian Premier sides with the Camberwell Magpies, I’ve had amazing opportunities. A highlight was making the ACC T20 Cricket Team of the Year. Unfortunately, a stress fracture in my L5 vertebrae sidelined me for the 2023/2024 season, including the Under 16 Dowling Shield. While undergoing rehab and adjusting to being unable to bowl, I focused on batting. In my first game back, I scored a personal best of 103 runs off 87 balls and continued as an opener, becoming our top scorer and leading the T20 side to a flag. For the upcoming season, I’ll focus on batting and fielding, aiming to improve my skills and score more runs for the 35-over team.

JAMES MCLISKY - SENIOR CRICKET

I’ve played cricket for as long as I can remember, starting at Burwood Cricket Club and continuing throughout my six years at De La Salle College. What I love most about cricket is the camaraderie and passion it fosters, building lasting friendships.

Playing First XI cricket in Year 11 and 12, and captaining in Year 12, was a privilege. I learned invaluable lessons from my teammates and coach, Mr Gigacz, shaping my skills and personal growth. Representing De La Salle taught me teamwork and resilience—picking ourselves up during tough times and supporting each other as a team. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities the College has given me.

ZANE MAILLARD - SENIOR CRICKET

My passion for cricket began in Under 11s, where I discovered the joy of a well-timed shot and the camaraderie of teammates. As I progressed, representing school and regional teams honed my skills and exposed me to higher competition, creating unforgettable memories.

This year at Caulfield Cricket Club, I’ve embraced a competitive environment. A standout moment was scoring 70 runs off 35 balls against Whitefriars, helping my school to victory. Beyond competition, I value the friendships cricket has fostered and enjoy coaching younger players, sharing my passion and watching them grow. I remain dedicated to improving my skills, enjoying the game, and giving back to the sport I love.

KAI LUCAS - SENIOR BASKETBALL

Basketball has been a significant part of my life since my brother introduced me to the game as a child. It’s more than just a sport to me; it’s a way to meet amazing people and create unforgettable memories. Since U12s, I’ve played representative basketball for the Waverley Falcons and now compete in U20s and Big V Youth League for the Westgate Imperials.

This year, I was honoured to be named in the ACC Basketball Team of the Year and to captain a fantastic group of boys. Wearing the jersey means representing the blue and gold with pride, not just for myself but for my coaches, teammates, and the school community. I’m grateful to Mr Conti for his efforts in elevating our basketball program, providing new jerseys, Champions Cup opportunities, and fostering a professional environment.

Sporting Achievements

JACK GIBSON - ACC SWIMMING

I’ve been swimming since I was three, starting with lessons and progressing to competitive swimming at 12. The journey has taught me resilience, optimism, and discipline, shaping how I approach challenges both in and out of the pool.

Though new to the DLS community, representing the school has been meaningful, connecting me to teammates and the school’s proud history. It’s an honour to compete alongside dedicated peers who embody school spirit.

I’m deeply grateful to my coaches, family, friends, and the DLS community for their support, which has been the foundation of my success. With their encouragement, I’m excited to pursue my future goals.

HENRY DOCHERTY - SENIOR CRICKET

Cricket has always been a big part of my life. What I love most about the sport are the lifelong friendships and memories created on the field. I started playing at STC South Camberwell Cricket Club and have continued playing there and for the school team. ACC sport, especially ACC cricket, has been a highlight of my time at De La Salle College, creating some of my best school memories.

One standout memory was playing against St Pat’s in Ballarat earlier this year. From the road trip filled with laughs and music to playing on one of the best grounds, it was an unforgettable day, made even better by taking 4/8 in my overs. I’m grateful for the College’s cricket program, which helped me improve and led to my selection in the 2024 ACC Senior Cricket Team of the Year. I encourage all students to get involved in co-curricular activities to strengthen friendships and make the most of their time at De La Salle.

MACK HIGGINBOTHAM - SENIOR FOOTBALL

Footy has always been a big part of my life. Growing up, I spent countless hours playing in the street with my dad and watching Jobe Watson tear it up for the Bombers for many years. It’s been an amazing experience to represent my school on the field, making great friends and memories along the way, including being a part of last year’s premiership side, a memory I won’t forget. I’m excited to keep playing in the future at the Old Boys and continue making memories.

MUSIC AND THE ARTS

Music Report

2024 has been another superb year of music-making at De La Salle College. The diversity of student musical talent displayed across our range of ensembles reflects the ongoing vitality of the Music Program. The Music Department in 2024 also benefitted from a long-awaited refurbishment that has significantly enhanced the joy we find in teaching and learning Music.

This year was filled with concert highlights across our music program. We celebrated the second De La Salle Battle of the Bands and the De La La La Vocal Competition. The joint Mamma Mia production with OLSH College, featuring an all-student orchestra, was a standout. Our Senior Concert Band collaborated with Siena College for the fourth year, and we proudly hosted the ACC Associated Catholic College Strings Day.

Students performed at The Edge, Federation Square, and embarked on a successful Music Tour of Bendigo. The House Soiree Concert Series, the VCE Performing Arts Showcase and our Autumn, Christmas and Junior Concerts all marked a year of outstanding musical achievement.

Music has been at the centre of numerous public and internal celebrations and is a key element in our celebration of the Eucharist at De La Salle College with our Liturgical Choir.

A highlight of 2024 has been the continued evolution of a strong culture of student-run bands, with both the Year 10 Dancing Social night and Year 11 and 12 Formals brought to life by such ensembles.

In 2024, we introduced a range of exciting new developments. A new Year 10 subject, Sound and Lighting Production, offered hands-on learning in event technology, while the establishment of a student Tech Crew provided essential support for school events. Our High Performance Classical Music Chamber Ensemble set new standards of excellence, and we proudly hosted the inaugural vocal collaboration concert with OLSH College. This year also featured our first themed Winter Ensemble Concert, A Beatles Extravaganza, celebrating timeless music in an unforgettable performance.

Many thanks to the supremely talented Music staff for their tireless work in guiding the talents of our musicians. Thank you also to our musicians’ parents for their continued and invaluable support.

Luke Serrano, Music Coordinator

Music has been at the centre of numerous public and internal celebrations and is a key element in our celebration of the Eucharist at De La Salle College.

Music

What an exceptional year it has been for music! As the 2024 Music Captain, I’ve had the privilege of watching the incredible talents of students from Years 5 to 12 flourish across an array of events.

The Autumn concert and Soirées to the thrilling Battle of the Bands and the ever popular De La La La Vocal Competition highlighted the spirit and skill of the students. Collaborative evenings with Siena College and OLSH, the Arts Assembly, and the unforgettable Beatles Extravaganza further showcased the passion and dedication within our Music Department.

Beyond the performances, it’s inspiring to witness the dedication of every student. Rehearsals starting as early as 7:30am never dampened their enthusiasm. This shared commitment is at the heart of the Music Department’s remarkable achievements this year, and a true testament to the effort and passion of each musician.

One of this year’s highlights was the Music Tour, with 58 students from Years 9 to 12 traveling to Bendigo to perform concerts for a number of local primary schools. The tour was filled with joy and excitement, giving students a taste of life on the road and the thrill of performing for new audiences.

Larry Dell, Music Captain

The College music ensembles have enjoyed a remarkable year, marked by the standout Winter Beatles Concert – our inaugural themed performance. This event was an incredible success, captivating the audience with dynamic performances and imaginative interpretations of iconic Beatles hits, showcasing the talents of all involved.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our Ensemble and Music Captains; Noah Bonnici, Larry Dell, Jerry Dong, Thomas Fish, Jordan Genovese, Sebastian Hall, Dylan Ip, Liam Murphy, Niki Rayzman, Max Schroder, Sam Trbanc, Harry Trbanc, Oliver Walsh-Dummett, and Christopher Wilson. Their dedication and leadership were instrumental to the success of our performances throughout the year.

With growing participation, we continue to build a vibrant musical culture of excellence that students are eager to join, nurturing talent and fostering lifelong friendships.

Drama and Productions

It is excellent that our students have the opportunity to perform not only musicals but also a play as a part of their co-curricular drama experience at the College. This enables students to gain very different theatre and performance experiences, drawing on complimentary skills.

Our superb Senior Musical co-production of Mamma Mia with OLSH College Bentleigh was a credit to the skills and work of many students and staff from both schools with six sold-out shows and exceptional audience feedback. Over 50 students from both schools were involved with the production in roles both onstage and offstage. Lead performances were given by Jordan Genovese, Skyler Sahely, and Max Jones as the “dads” and Archie Cannington as Skye. Once again, a talented group of students performed in the live band for the production, led by the expert musical direction of Mr Luke Serrano. Now, as the year draws to a close, we’re already underway with preparations for next year’s Senior Musical, Peter Pan

Also onstage this year was the Junior Production of The Lorax at Sacré Coeur. This show featured memorable moments from our students in Year 7 and 8, including Michael Conron performing as The Lorax, Noah Bonnici as Ted, and Oliver Eagle as the Young Once-ler. The colourful retelling of the classic Dr Seuss was a lot of fun and highlighted the important role we all have in standing up for what’s right.

This year’s Senior Play was The London Operation, a comedy all about high-profile thefts, aspiring evil masterminds, and the spy agency tasked with getting to the bottom of everything. Outstanding performances were delivered by all students from OLSH and De La Salle colleges, with lead performances from Max Jones as Secret Agent Thomas London, Archie Cannington as aspiring evil mastermind Shirley Smythe, and Jordan Genovese as the show’s villain, Ivan Kolawski. The show was made even more entertaining by a talented ‘movement team’ who performed engaging choreographed sequences between scenes set to light shows created by members of the De La Salle Tech. Crew including Adrian Jackson, Lachlan Frazer, Christopher Wilson, and Noah Ockwell.

Visual Arts

This year has been incredibly busy and rewarding for our Art Department, which continues to thrive with a wide range of subjects on offer, including Architecture, Art, Media, Photography and Visual Communication Design. We kicked off the year with the Catholic Education Week Creative Arts Exhibition at Celtic Hall at the Catholic Leadership Centre in East Melbourne. This allowed us to celebrate the creative talents of students across our community.

Special congratulations go to Alex Roach, who was honoured with the prestigious Archbishop of Melbourne Award for Religious Art, and to Jonathan Paola, who won the People’s Choice Award. These achievements are a testament to the dedication and skill of our students and staff and we are incredibly proud of their efforts.

In May, we proudly participated in the ACC Art Show at Federation Square’s Atrium and The Edge, with almost 2,000 visitors attending. This wonderful event showcased the intersection of art and technology, bringing together creative works from all ACC schools.

June marked the return of the highly anticipated Arts Assembly, a vibrant fusion of music, performance and art, which remains a standout in our College calendar. Student artwork accompanied live musical performances, creating a fantastic atmosphere and providing a unique way to experience these incredible works of art.

In September, we hosted the annual De La Salle College Art and Technology Exhibition in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC), featuring a diverse array of works from students in Years 6-12. The exhibition highlighted talent across a range of subjects, including Art, Media, Photography, Architecture, Visual Communication Design, STEM and Product Design and Technology.

This year, we were delighted to welcome a new member to the Arts team: Angus McGeehan, our new Art Technician, who has seamlessly integrated into our department. A special thank you to all our dedicated staff — David Alexander, George Arthur, Christine Bassili, Emma D’Angelo, Mark Gustincic, David Happ, and Trevor Ivan — for their hard work and commitment throughout the year. We also extend our gratitude to Melinda Vorster and Helen Amir, who stepped in to replace staff on leave.

Ryan Hayward, Learning Area Team Leader – Visual Arts

These achievements are a testament to the dedication and skill of our students and staff and we are incredibly proud of their efforts.

Arts Captains

As St Austin’s House Arts Captain of 2024 we had a productive year, regardless of winning or losing. I was absolutely blown away this year at the Art and Technology Exhibition, revealing what beautiful artworks, designs, clothes and architecture everyone presented. The performances of our talented students across the cohort from their productions and performances to their short films have been immensely impressive to watch, as with our wonderful bands of musicians and singers.

Daniel O’Kane, St Austin’s House – Arts Captain

2024 has been an exciting evolution for creative practices at our College, with an almost continuous stream of arts events happening each term. The incredible talents of St Leo’s students have been on full display throughout. Whether it was the melodically magnificent ‘Mamma Mia’, colourful concerts in the PAC, the electrifying espionage in ‘The London Operation’, or the vivid visuals showcased in our Art and Technology Exhibition, it’s undeniable that St Leo’s is surrounded by extraordinarily skilled artists and creators. I couldn’t be more grateful for the shared experiences with such inspiring individuals.

Skyler Sahely, St Leo’s House – Arts Captain

This year I have had the privilege of being the St Edwin’s Arts Captain, alongside my fellow St Edwin’s House Leaders and Mrs Doherty. I have had the ability to lead and inspire St Edwin’s House with regards to the arts and music.

We’ve had many memorable events, including the ACC Arts Show, Arts Assembly, and House Soiree, which showcased individual talents and highlighted the strength of the arts and music programs at De La Salle College. These experiences have allowed me to actively participate, develop my leadership skills, and deepen my understanding of the arts at the College.

Oliver Walsh-Dummett, St Edwin’s House – Arts Captain

In 2024, the undeniable talent and creativity of the St Mark's students was on full display. As always, a key event within the calendar was the St Mark's House Soiree. Whilst we were unable to take home the plaque, the hard work each student put into crafting a solo piece ultimately led to second place. Between the spectacular productions of ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘The London Operation’, the ACC Art Show, annual Art and Technology Exhibition, Arts Assembly, collaborations with OLSH and Siena College and the countless drama and music performance evenings throughout the year, there was truly never a dull day within the Arts Department.

Jordan Genovese, St Mark’s House – Arts Captain

Media

Once again, this year has seen many students delve into the world of Media as a part of their subject selection. An option from Year 9, the subject presents students with opportunities to critically explore the Media that we interact with in our everyday lives including films, television, social media and photography (amongst others). Students also enjoy the process of planning and producing their own media products. For many of our students, this means creating their own short film or trailer, with some students producing animated films, magazines, photography series, posters and podcasts.

This year, our Media students headed out of the classroom to locations all over Melbourne and regional Victoria with cameras, microphones and lighting systems to record footage for their productions, often featuring friends and family as actors (thank you to all those who got involved). An impressive number of students also drew on their musical skills to create their own music for their productions. Other students were busy interviewing people for magazine articles about topics ranging from football teams to fashion, recording podcast episodes , sports, art, musical theatre, and completing photo-shoots for film and music posters. Our Year 10 class produced a fantastic set of film trailers for all sorts of different genres including horror, thriller, action, comedy and drama. A selection of top Media projects were was showcased at the Media Awards Night at the end of the year.

Parent Network

The De La Salle College Parent Network aims to foster a strong sense of community throughout the College by offering regular opportunities for parents to socialise, connect and participate in school life.

In 2024, the Parent Network once again provided these opportunities through a wide variety of events. These included the Year 7 Parent Information and Welcome Drinks evening, the Primary Welcome BBQ, the whole school Parent Social Evening at The Bentleigh Social, as well as the Mother’s and Father’s Day Breakfasts. The Annual Mother’s Lunch at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club and Golf Day at Spring Valley Golf Club also provided fabulous opportunities for fun and friendship among new and old members of the De La Salle College Community.

The Parent Network’s newest initiative, the Uniform Freecycle (now in its second year) proved to be a tremendous success. We are extremely grateful for the generosity of current and past parents who donated clean, wearable uniform items. This initiative enabled families to select up to five items for free, with the remaining stock re-entering the school community circulation for a “second life”—a fantastic service to our families and a valuable sustainability initiative.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported the 2024 Parent Network events. Your involvement has ensured that we continue to strengthen our sense of community.

Executive Deputy Principal

At De La Salle College Malvern we often refer to the Lasallian values of respect, justice, faith, equality and inclusivity; they underpin everything we do as a Catholic learning community. Whilst these values are intricately interconnected and interdependent, the value of respect has been particularly important during the 2024 school year and has been personified by our College Vice-Captains Angus Gill and James McLisky throughout the year.

Traditionally we start the academic year with our Opening and Welcome Mass where our staff, Year 7 students and our College Leaders gather together with their families at St Patrick’s Cathedral. During this occasion we formally welcome our new Primary and Year 7 students into our College Community as they commence their journey as a De La Salle College student.

Outside of their academic pursuits, our students had countless opportunities for personal growth, as highlighted in this yearbook. From participation in the Performing Arts and sports to interschool social events with local girls’ schools, our educational approach focuses on more than just academic knowledge. Staying true to our Mission Statement, we strive to shape students into respectful, compassionate, and thoughtful young men. If our goal is to inspire them to become men who put others first and positively influence the world, this foundation is laid in their everyday experiences and interactions.

I want to extend my congratulations to all of our students for their achievements in 2024. As we look ahead, we are committed to strengthening resilience in learning and encouraging creative, ethical approaches to problem-solving. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the staff at De La Salle College. Time and again, we recognise that our greatest asset and the true heart of the College are our dedicated staff members. Their ongoing contributions significantly enrich the lives of our students each and every day, and I commend them for their efforts.

As we look ahead, we are committed to strengthening resilience in learning and encouraging creative, ethical approaches to problem-solving.

College Prayer

Let us remember we are in the Holy presence of God.

God, as our leader, and guided by the Lasallian Principles, we commit ourselves to lives of faith and excellence, compassion, courage and loyalty.

May we have a humble heart a generous spirit and a willingness to serve our community.

In the likeness of the Founder, may we live with virtue and love.

Inspired by a burning zeal to do what is right and just, we commit ourselves to the blue and gold, Deo Duce.

St John Baptist de La Salle – Pray for us

Live Jesus in our hearts – Forever!

The De La Salle College Malvern Prayer was written by the 2017 Student Leadership Team, in consultation with key staff and stakeholders, and presented at the Liturgy for the Feast of the Assumption, 15 August 2017.
