He’s Learning to Live and Lead
From the Principal Dear Families of De La Salle, I write to you as we prepare to launch our Centenary Year. The College has operated along Stanhope Street, Malvern for one hundred years. Such a milestone is a testimony to the Catholic, Lasallian Education that has been delivered in the College over so many decades. Wars have come and gone; there was the Great Depression and the rapid growth of Melbourne from 1950s until now and still the College remains steadfast in its delivery of a solid academic education, ensconced in a truly pastoral setting where spiritual values and respect for others remain our hallmarks, with God as our Leader. Deo Duce! We are grateful for the wonderful teachers, students and families that are part of our College in the Centenary year.
The Launch of the Centenary Year We begin this year with our Launch on 6 February. A special W Class tram, decorated with the DLS colours showcasing photos of the De La of earlier decades will be displayed inside. With music of the era being played by musicians at one end, the tram will arrive at De La Salle at 9.00am to collect a special group of grandfathers who have sired two generations of Lasallians. Three grandfathers present record their fathers as being among the students enrolled in our first year - 1912. Yes, we have four generations in De La Salle today! The College has established a Centenary room where souvenirs, photos, trophies and uniforms will be displayed. One table displayed is that on which the First Constitution of the Old Collegians was signed in the 1930s. We would be grateful for the donation of any memorabilia which families might possess from those early years and who would be happy to donate them to our fantastic archives. Monday, 6 February will also host a School Assembly attended by a significant group of distinguished guests Brothers who have served in the College at periods since the early 1940s, or attended the College at that time, Principals of La Salle schools in Melbourne with their student leaders who will be supporting our Leaders at their Investiture. This Assembly will also see the blessing and presentation of memorial pins to our current students, the blessing of two plaques to commemorate the event, and the presence of our Provincial, Brother Ambrose Payne fsc to address the College. The Centenary Year is potted with a series of events and gatherings of Old Collegians, families and friends of De La Salle. I will not repeat them here but invite you to check our website where it has been clearly set out. Those interested in a race day at Caulfield on 24 March need only go to the website to book your tickets. We will be fed, informed and entertained in the Black Caviar Pavillion. The running of the De La Salle Centenary Plate promises to be a very special event on the racing calendar that day. 2012 promises to be a very special year in the annals of the College. We invite all families to be involved in an event that might interest you and your friends. It is a celebration of who we are today as importantly as it is a reflection of what others did to bring us to where we are. I look forward to meeting you during the course of this year. Br. Paul Rogers fsc Principal

Special Request As our Centenary year gets under way, the College is asking families:1.

Do you have any photos?
Please check your family history with the College. We are especially interested in those current students whose fathers, grandfathers and beyond, might have come to DLS. Please let us know and provide us with as much detail as you have. Thank you.

Year 7 Parents As earlier advised, we were notified in November that there had been a delay in the production of a new model of Netbook which is required for our Year 7 boys. As soon as we receive them (hopefully by the end of February), we will advise all Year 7 parents of an Information Evening which will be coupled with the sale and distribution of your netbooks. Year 7 camps commence next week with 7 Benilde being the first homeroom. The boys will travel to the College camp site at Jan Juc for three days of special activities. The camp also helps boys to get to know their peers much better and to become very familiar with their class with whom they will spend the rest of this year. Parents will be invited to attend a BBQ lunch on the Friday and have an opportunity to meet the other parents related to 7B. You are all welcome and your sons will be free to travel home with you. Mr. Jeff Locke, a Homeroom Tutor in Year 7 Benilde had an operation recently and was advised to take extended leave to recuperate. He is also scheduled to take Long Service Leave in Term 2. Hence, Ms. Laura Desmet will remain with the class throughout the first two terms. Laura was with us for some time in 2011, so is very familiar with the College.
Security All schools need to ensure that their students are safe when they are at school. It is therefore important that the campus has adequate procedures to ensure that our gates are always locked, especially those on Dalny and Stanhope Streets. Stanhope will be open for access and egress before and after school. I refer to operating hours 9.00am - 3.05pm. Hence if a parent is visiting the College during school hours, your only entrance can be via the gates on High Street. You can always find a part on the College side of High Street once the Clearway regulations have expired in mid morning.
Sports Bag In 2011, Mr. Peter Riordan approached Year 8 students with some samples of sports bags that could be made available for their use in 2012. The choice of the boys was unanimous. The College has now acquired sports bags (only $15.00) and they accommodate footwear, wet towels, sports gear etc and can be carried in various ways or rolled and put in a school bag. Dobsons have agreed to sell the bag at the acquisition cost to the school. They are now available from Dobsons.
Congtatulations to our 2011 Year 12 Our VCE results saw another increase in quality results over 2010. Whilst the top score was slightly lower, the number of boys in the top 8% of the state rose by 2% to 12.6%, or 22 students. Phillip Taranto is the Dux of De La for 2011 with an ATAR score of 99.35. To complement that group, only 2.9% of our cohort had an ATAR score below 40 which means our whole cohort improved in quality. Two students had a perfect score of 50 : Philip Taranto (Maths Methods) and Simon Hearn (Legal Studies).

Learn more about our College Results 2011. We congratulate so many of our teachers who prepared students to achieve in the top 8% (i.e. 40 and above). In particular, special mention must be made of two teachers; David Ellul (Maths Methods) and Trish Burke (Legal Studies), both of whom produced perfect scores and for the first time. Well done!
Special Mention Jamie Faro (Year 10H, 2011) has been successful in obtaining an Australian School Based Apprenticeship with Reece Plumbing. He will work in their bathroom outlets in Sales and Marketing. In order to get his apprenticeship, Jamie had to apply on line, send his resume and attend two interviews. Staff at Reece were very impressed with Jamie and he was signed up. This job will allow Jamie to conclude this apprenticeship as part of his VCAL Certificate, provide him with a Certificate II in Transport and Logistics and give him paid work on Friday, Saturday and school holidays if he wishes. Reece offer ongoing employment to their apprentices should they want it. Jamie plans on also undertaking study in International Trade as part of his VCAL studies. We are very proud of Jamie’s achievements in this regard. Well done Jamie.
Book Supplies This year the College contracted a new book supplier and we were hoping for a significant increase in service. We are disappointed with the outcomes but wish to inform parents that the fault is not entirely with Wooldridges. Book companies have become wary of producing large numbers of text books this year because of the pending approvals for the new curriculum. They have held up producing significant quantities of what is required because they are aware things may change very soon. We do apologise to parents for the difficulties that they have experienced in this regard. We hope that all is remedied quickly and learning will not be affected.

Wellbeing News Welcome to our new counsellor at Kinnoull Campus, Maree Keel. Maree has worked in secondary boys’ schools previously and we warmly welcome her to De La Salle. Maree will be on campus 3 days per week: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
PARENT EDUCATION EVENING San Miguel Theatre, Kinnoull Campus Learn more about the Parent Evening Each year, a number of parent evenings are offered by the College that deal with issues which are common to parents of teen boys. The first one, on 16 February, deals with the topic of “Transition”. It is particularly relevant to parents of boys new to the College: all Years 4 and 7 and to parents of new boys from other levels. Of course, transition not only has to do with starting a new school but also with facing new circumstances and situations that upset ‘the norm’. Mr. Pascal Rohan will be accompanied by two boys from Year 8 who will copresent. An evening worth attending! If you intend to be present, please email Pascal on prohan@delasalle.vic.edu.au your intent with the number of those attending. Pascal Rohan Director of Student Wellbeing
Student Achievements During January, Ben Paine (Year 7) was a member of the City of Moorabbin Cricket Association Under 12 Representative Team that competed in the Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union Championships. The side were runners up in the Josh Brown Plate competition. Ben was vice captain of the team. Congratulations Ben.

RIP Mr. Laurie Martin - a De La Old Collegian and father of Trevor, Chris (staff member) and Geoff. Laurie spent his working life in the offices of the Malvern Town Council and it was from his office that he looked out over his alma mater. He was another De La voice in the Council offices at that time - pre-Stonnington era! He also served in the RAAF in WW2 and maintained a long and lasting friendship with all those with whom he had served. His three sons attended De La Salle - Trevor (College Captain, 1972), Chris (College Captain, 1974) and Geoff (1983). Laurie was buried at St. Joseph’s Malvern, where he was baptized and married. May he rest in peace in the arms of the God whom He served so well in his life. Our oldest Old Collegian priest, Fr. Tom McCarthy (1938) has passed away aged 90. He was ordained in 1947 nearly 65 years a priest. His funeral was at All Hallows Church, Balwyn, where he had been the parish priest for nearly 30 years. His twin brother, Dr. John McCarthy (1938), passed on 18 December, 2011. We also advise the death of Denis Howes (1954). Denis’ brother Roger (1960) was also an Old Collegian as were his sons Richard (1986), Adrian (1989), Peter (1990) and Nicholas (1993).

ACC Athletics Our preparation for the 2012 ACC Athletics Carnival begins on Thursday 9 February at 7:30am at Duncan Mackinnon Athletics Track Training will continue each Thursday morning in Term One up until the ACC Carnival on Wednesday March 28th at the new Albert Park Athletics Complex. We were very fortunate to have many staff assisting with ACC Athletics training in 2011 and I am hoping that we will have a large number of staff willing to be involved again this year. Athleticism and coaching expertise are not the most important ingredients but simply a willingness to contribute time, energy and enthusiasm towards our ACC Athletics Squad to assist the boys to be the best that they can be.
ACC Swimming Camp 2012 Late Sunday afternoon brought an end to a very successful 2012 ACC Swimming Camp which began after school last Friday at Jan Juc. Thirty boys (Years 7 - 12), four staff and Oscar Carlson (ACC Swimming Coach) enjoyed a much worthwhile 3 day camp in preparation for the ACC Swimming Championships on the evening of Friday, 17 February. The Camp was superbly planned by Oscar with a variety of beach and pool activities for the boys to participate in to not only prepare them to represent De La at the ACC Carnival but to build team unity and an awareness of a common purpose. Among many highlights for the weekend was the fact that one third of the camp group were 2012 Year 7 students. This figure can only augur well for a bright future for ACC Swimming at De La. As well as the benefit of Oscar’s coaching expertise and passion, the boys were very fortunate to have the collective time, effort and enthusiasm from Chris Windley, Gab Windley and Simon Brown. Peter Harte Director of Sport
