The DCDL Familyis Growing!
In this issue of “Check It Out,” you’ll find information about our upcoming Hiring Event to recruit staff for the new Liberty Branch Library. People sometimes ask me about what it takes to work in a library. For us, the key is a “people-first attitude.” We are looking for colleagues who are genuinely interested in providing outstanding customer service, who enjoy helping people, and who want to be part of a team that’s similarly motivated. We seek people who are upbeat, even in the hectic pace of a busy service desk. Nearly all of our jobs are public facing; that means you need to be willing and able to face the public with a genuine, welcoming smile. You might be surprised that I didn’t mention that we want people who like to read or who are especially school-smart. I didn’t mention that we want people who have memorized the Dewey Decimal System or who keep their home libraries in alphabetical order. While we enjoy people with those attributes, and have been known to have some lively discussions about recent books, movies, true crime podcasts, and the mysteries of cataloging, these are less important than a people-first attitude. If you have this attitude, we’d love to talk to Georgeyou!Needham

2 It’s always a beach day this summer at the Delaware County District Library. And our cover model, Avanelle is ready! Her mom is Kelly, the Youth Services & Programming Coordinator, who is responsible for all this summer fun. This year’s Summer Reading Club is “Oceans of Possibilities.” We’ll be learning and reading tales from the high seas, the beach, and the depth of the ocean all summer long. We’ve got STEM focused pirates and a life-size whale exhibit as well as long time summer favorites like the Medieval Faire and chick hatching! But we can’t forget the reason for all this fun. Reading over the summer helps children stay on track to learn the rest of the year. Just 15 minutes a day of reading can do wonders. Use the log on page 13 to track your minutes read and you can win prizes! Reading books, audiobooks, magazines, and comics all count towards the goal. So does being read to by a caregiver! No matter how you like to read, it all counts towards your goal of twelve hours. For more information on Summer Reading Club please visit:

STORYTIMES
Read: Reading 15 minutes a day builds the skills your child will need to learn how to read. A great way to get your 15 minutes of reading in, is to read one of our StoryWalks®! Come to the Powell, Orange or Ostrander branches each month to read a new story in our outdoor spaces. StoryWalk® is an innovative and delightful way for children — and adults! — to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time.

Storytimes are back at three of our four locations this summer! We’re so excited to have storytellers back with us. Here’s the schedule!
BACK AT DCDL!
Talk: Talk about the books that you read! Ask your little what their favorite part of the story was or if they learned something new. Talking about what they read helps improve comprehension and memory retention.
Play: Get outside with chalk and decorate your sidewalks or driveways. Turn your outdoor space into a chalk obstacle course - jumps, spins, shapes, and more!
16 EARLY LITERACY TIP
Write: Visit youtube.com/TheDCDL, watch our “Draw the Alphabet” videos, and try to write them yourself!
Sing: Singing is a great way to develop listening skills with your little! Songs have a note for each part of a word, so when you sing you’re helping your child hear that words have smaller parts.
Summer has arrived and with it, the Summer Reading Club! DCDL is discovering Oceans of Possibilities through fun, family programs this summer and we hope that you join us for the excitement.

In parallel timelines, The Summer Wives tells the glamorous tale of Miranda Schuyler’s first summer on Winthrop Island in 1951 and another summer decades later when she returns to find justice for the man she once loved. This is a great starting point for any of Williams’ historical fiction novels, and a peek at the sprawling fictional Schuyler family. You’ll want more and there’s at least a dozen more to read from this author.
Welcome to the most tumultuous summer of the twentieth century. It’s 1969, and for the Levin family, the times they are a-changing. The siblings of the family are spread between Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be family drama to make the cultural drama of the year. This is beach read queen Elin Hilderbrand’s first foray into historical fiction and it is atmospheric and nostalgic.
There’s nothing better than reading in the sun in the summer and reading the right book can make anywhere feel like the beach. Add one of these titles to your To-BeRead list. I’m sure they’ll get you in a vacation state of mind.
For more beach reads: bit.ly/DCDLbeachreads
The title of this one hits it on the nose. When a romance author and a literary author end up spending the summer in neighboring beach houses, they challenge one another to write in the other’s genre. Whoever’s book gets published first wins. While diving into each other’s work, they learn a lot about each other, themselves, and how our work defines us.
