Summertime at the Library

Another summer, another chance to complete our Summer Reading Club challenge! Staff felt the nostalgia as we planned for this year’s theme of Camp DCDL.

We channeled our own summer camp experiences to create programs that encourage kids to love reading and stay curious. Each branch is decked out with summer camp decorations. It feels fitting, because reading offers us an adventurous escape from our day-to-day lives; just like camp.

The Library is an institution for every stage of life. Summer Reading Club is no exception. The littlest library-goers and teens can earn prizes through tracking the amount of time they read over the summer. Grown-ups get in on the fun by earning an entry for a prize every time they read four books.

Summer isn’t just an escape, we use it to get ready for the next year of learning. That’s truly the goal behind Summer Reading Club, and you’ll even find a Kindergarten Readiness Checklist in the following pages if that’s the stage of life you’re in. We’ll see you at the Library soon!

COVER STORY

Hello there, campers! It’s going to be a summer of reading adventures at the Delaware County District Library. Our cover models, Gigi and Sophia, are just two daughters of Director Bryan Howard. (He has four!) They came in for an afternoon of library fun and a photoshoot in preparation for Summer Reading Club.

This summer DCDL is keeping you reading with a summer camp themed program. Camp DCDL follows our traditional time tracking method that you know and love. Reading during the summer helps to keep kids on track to learn the rest of the year. Studies have shown that just 15 minutes a day can be super effective. Use the log on page 11 to track your progress. Don’t forget to come in to the library to claim your prizes at six and 12 hours of reading! Reading books, audiobooks, magazines, and comics all count towards the goal. So does being read to by a caregiver. All reading, no matter how you do it, counts towards the 12 hour goal.

EARLY LITERACY TIP

We all know that little kids love to move. But did you know that all physical activity builds brains, too?

In the first years, cells in our brains make more connections than they will at any other point in life. And some of those first pathways are related to movement and coordination. These basic building blocks are the foundation for all other more complex skills.

So getting kids moving is serious fun: scientific research tells us it has a lasting effect that nurtures developing brains. Here are some tips to boost early learning through physical activity.

Act out books as you read them.

Narrate the actions you are doing. “We can stalk like cheetahs!”

Dance, dance, dance! Make abstract ideas of emotion, rhythm, and words concrete by literally feeling them out.

Use big paper when writing or making art.

Play toys and games that encourage movement and music such as instruments, simple homemade obstacle courses, or follow-the-leader.

Throw and roll objects or blow and pop bubbles to improve coordination and eyetracking.

Lifting, bouncing, rolling, and swinging builds the inner ear, which helps children learn to control their movements.

STAFF REVIEW

Romance is a billion-dollar industry with countless enthusiastic readers, passionate authors, and a fiercely supportive community. A good romance is full of unpredictable twists and turns, fun dialogue, and exciting characters. I enjoy reading romance books from all genres and walks of life. Here are some of my favorite romance books for Read a Romance Month in August!

After Hours on Milagro Street by Angelina M. Lopez

Alejandra “Alex” Torres comes home and is not a fan. She left 13 years ago and begrudgingly returns to help take care of her grandmother’s bar. After meeting the tenant in the upstairs apartment she quickly realizes that he’s a very hot problem. Jeremiah loves the Torres family - they’re everything he’s ever wanted and never had. But Alex and Jeremiah are fighting on opposite sides of her grandmother’s bar. However, secret deeds to the building, a ghost haunting the bar, rising debts, and developers looking to buy the building and tear it down push Alex and Jeremiah together more and more.

A Lady for the Duke by Alexis Hall

After Viola Carroll is presumed dead at Waterloo, she can finally take the opportunity to live as her true self. Her freedom, however, came with a price. Now working as her sister-in-law’s companion, Viola reconnects with her closest childhood friend, Justin de Vere, the Duke of Gracewood. Justin has lost himself to grief. He cannot move past the death of his closest friend, but Viola is compelling and familiar in a way he can’t deny. As their friendship begins again, with new feelings growing, will Viola and Justin find happiness?

Wolf Gone Wild by Juliette Cross

Mateo is a werewolf who has been unable to shift for three months. And because of that, his wolf is talking to him. LOUDLY. Convinced he’s cursed, he seeks out a powerful witch to break his hex. Evie has always obeyed the rules of her coven — no werewolves. When an angry, dangerous werewolf strolls into the bar she’s ready to toss him out. But the desperation in his eyes when he begs her to help him softens her heart. However, Evie doesn’t know that Mateo’s wolf has a mind of his own. And he wants only one thing. Her.
