Hello! I’m Bryan. Nice to Meet You.

In my short time as Director of the Delaware County District Library, I have seen firsthand the passion this community has for their local library. In October, I was able to hold meet and greets at each of the branches. During this time I met so many kind individuals who have a great love for the library. I thoroughly enjoyed the conversations that were held at these events.

As we close the book on 2022 and begin to look towards 2023, the staff at DCDL is hard at work to provide wonderful programming and find new and innovative ways to offer the services that this community desires. In the first quarter of 2023, we look forward to opening our new Liberty Branch Library at the corner of Home and Steitz roads in Powell. A grand opening date will be announced soon, so be on the lookout!

You’ll notice in this newsletter that we will refer you to our website for more information on several occasions. Bookmarking www.delawarelibrary.org on your computer browser is always a great idea, but even moreso now that it will be your number one go-to location for all the things you’ll need to know about the grand opening of Liberty and the services and programs we’ll be introducing upon its completion.

Another wonderful resource with our most up-to-date information is our email notifications. Be sure you’re receiving the information you want by visiting www.delawarelibrary.org/member-update. I’m excited to stay in touch with you. Feel free to reach out or reply if you ever have any questions.

EARLY LITERACY TIP

Do you have a favorite song you sang with a parent or loved one as a child? A nursery rhyme sung to a classic tune, a lullaby, or even a song from a movie or television show? Not only do songs like these create warm childhood memories that last a lifetime, but they also can be great tools for early literacy.

Singing with your child promotes early literacy development in so many ways. When you sing, words are often divided into different pitches and tones, which can break down words into easier-to-understand chunks for little learners to better understand.

Singing is also usually slower than everyday speaking, which allows kids to hear small sounds in words along with giving more time to process those words and sounds.

Classic nursery rhymes set to song can also increase your young ones’ vocabularies, as they often include words that we might not use as much as we used to. Think of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star; how often do we say words out loud like “twinkle”?

Finally, it is never a requirement to be an excellent singer to sing with your child. Do as well as you can, and not only will you make lovely memories, but you’ll start your little one on a great path to early literacy.

These tips were pulled from the Every Child Ready to Read early literacy framework, which you can learn more about at EveryChildReadytoRead.org

Keep on singing!

What Is The Maker studio?

The Maker Studio is a project of the Delaware County District Library where people of all ages can make, invent, create, build, and learn. Bring your ideas to life using our tools, equipment, and software, including 3D printers, sewing machines, vinyl cutter, laser cutter/engraver, Adobe Creative Cloud, and more.

maker studio class changes

You may have noticed there aren’t any programs listed in this quarterly for the Maker Studio after December.

In 2023, we’ll switch to only show programs on the online event calendar. This is because we are changing how we operate our training structure.

To meet community demand, Maker Studio classes will increase!

Beginning in January, Wednesdays will be exclusively dedicated to teaching and training.

Project programs, equipment demos, and room tours will continue.

Software lessons will be added to help you design your own projects and 1-on-1 sessions will be provided for more in-depth training.

Class schedules and topics will vary. We’re excited for this next step for the Maker Studio and hope you are, too!

STAFF REVIEW

Check out these books that are perfect for “New Adults” with a focus on characters from age 18 to 30.

Hana Khan Carries On by Uzma Jalaluddin

Hana’s life is a balancing act. As a young Muslim woman living in Toronto, she is juggling helping out at her family’s halal restaurant, running an anonymous podcast, and interning at a radio station. When a rival restaurant opens in her neighborhood, her attraction to the new owner makes her life even more complicated. With issues at her internship and a hate-motivated attack in her neighborhood, Hana relies on the support of her family, friends and community to find her voice. A heartwarming novel of self-discovery, family ties, and romance balanced with a deeper look at issues of racism and hate crimes.

The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston

Florence Day doesn’t believe in love anymore, which is a problem because she’s a ghostwriter for a famous romance author. Though her new editor refuses to give her a much needed extension on her next book, it’s the last thing on her mind when her father passes away and she must return to her hometown to help her family after years away. The loss of her father is particularly hard because he was the only other person who had the same gift: the ability to see ghosts and help them with unfinished business. Florence is also in for another shock when her new book editor shows up at her childhood home... as a ghost! An emotional, but quirky and sweet story with romance, humor, and endearing characters you’ll root for.

Survive the Night by Riley Sager

It’s the ‘90s and film-obsessed college student Charlie just wants to go home. She meets Josh at a campus ride board, who’s also headed in the direction of Ohio and offers to share a ride. Charlie is still grieving the loss of her best friend, who was a victim of the Campus Killer and as their trip gets started, Charlie comes to realize that maybe Josh isn’t exactly who she thought he was. Did she get in the car with the Campus Killer? A fun, cat and mouse psychological thriller that will keep you turning the pages.
