Retirement Concerns

‘Becoming’ in Retirement For too many of us, retirement has been defined by what it’s NOT versus what it is. Many times, we no longer have full-time workloads or the same family responsibilities. Retirees, are in a new place of less pressure and hopefully far less stress nipping at our heels and weighing on our minds. This is also an incredible new time where you enter a new space of freedom to recreate yourself. This new season opens up the possibility of MUCH MORE instead of just MUCH LESS.

A

t the Delaware Retiree ConnectionTM, we define retirement as that stage of life when you have unlimited discretionary time, and you no longer exchange time for money. But for many people, it can be a confusing time, because your work may have defined you for so long. Perhaps you were tasked with focusing on your growing kids, and now they’re long gone and focusing on their own kids. Whether your profession or your family gave you identity, it can be daunting to step into retirement, a wide OPEN time and space. For others, they’ve day-dreamed of this stage as a time when they can do whatever they wish with plenty of time on their hands. They think of endless days of leisure and recreational activities. But as the Delaware Retiree Advisor, Len shares that many retirees find themselves either at a loss for a new identity or feeling empty with all of their free time. ‘Many in retirement who find ‘success’ in this new phase understand that it should be much more than just filling in their hours pursuing leisure. They come to understand that the possibility of their ‘personhood’ is right in front of them. In other words, they fulfill lifelong passions, or perhaps finding a new one.’

purposeful use. Maybe it’s a hobby, volunteer work, a new sport, joining a club, or even a part time job entirely different from your previous profession. The “Golden Years” are truly golden when retirees recognize their evolution towards becoming the person they truly are. And enjoying life while they’re at it. At the Delaware Retiree ConnectionTM, we’re excited to help unlock the amazing potential of this new season, connecting you to networks and resources that help you find ‘the new you’ that will flourish in this new stage. Len is one of our key consultants based on his strategic work to partner into people facing this stage. He shares one of the key points to keep in mind: ‘An essential element of retirement is analyzing priorities while being able to maintain financial stability. This requires a lot of planning, sure, but to do it properly, it is important to honestly evaluate your given situation. Planning is part of that equation.’ As you shift into retirement, your “becoming” is an opportunity to embrace. Take advantage of our resources and look for other chances to reflect. Dig in to the community around you. Together let’s make these years golden!

‘Becoming’ is a process, a journey. Now that life has shifted from other responsibilities such as work and raising a family, there is an opportunity to finally put that time to

Flourishing in retirement means nourishing your own passions. That love of watercolor may have been packed away when there was no time to create. That vintage mustang might be in parts in the garage waiting patiently for your meticulous care. Your hobbies may have lain dormant during the last busy stages of work and family life. Now’s the time to rekindle your passions! There are many groups across Sussex that would welcome new members with arms wide open. Why not give back at the Village Improvement Association, or your local animal shelter like the Brandywine SPCA or DHA? Maybe peeling back the years with the Lewes Historical Society strikes your fancy. Or perhaps your green thumb would be right at home with the Lewes in Bloom or Rehoboth in Bloom teams. resh air, open skies, nature all around. There are plenty of reasons to go for a walk in the gorgeous state of Delaware. Take some time to explore beyond Delaware’s famed beaches: there’s so much more to see! First…you’ve got to start where the First State’s explorers did. The coast. So let’s go!

Gordons Pond, Cape Henlopen State Park A coastal, dog-friendly, flat and scenic route. It’s a 5-mile loop with options for enjoying inland nature and meticulous boardwalks throughout the trail, highlighting the coastal beauty of Delaware. Whether it’s the blossoming spring or the red leaves swirling around you in the autumn wind, Gordon’s Pond’s trail will captivate you with its amazing views.

14 Summer 2021 LOVE LIVING HERETM

The boardwalks are beautifully crafted for both cyclists and those of us who prefer to stay on foot. Go explore this state treasure to see what keeps the locals coming back for more.

Killens Pond Loop Just an hour north of the beach towns, Killens Pond Trail offers a stunning opportunity for walkers who want to

experience Delaware’s inland waterways. An easy hike of 2.5 or so miles takes you on a gorgeous tour where you can witness native plants that straddle south and northeast climates. You’ll walk between rhododendrons that prefer the north, and cypresses in the swamp that favor the southern climate and will be delighted to witness waterfowl of all sorts that visit Delaware on their migratory visits to our state.

Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge More than 16,000 acres of pristine wildlife awaits you at Bombay Hook. Explore coastal beauty combined with protected land, preserved for the area wildlife. You don’t want to miss this gem! (Don’t forget to bring your binoculars, bug spray and water repellent gear.)

Trap Pond State Park Kayak or walk your way through Trap Pond State Park, where you will experience the north/south divide of cypress trees and more. 90 acres of exquisite, unique trees and other plants will be your crash course into the climate and biology so precious to Delaware! Just an hour north of Rehoboth and

Lewes, this trip will wet your appetite to know more about our unique ecology. So, get out those hiking boots gathering dust in the back of some closet. Let’s break them in and enjoy the diverse terrain Delaware has to offer.

Fresh from Farm to Table

T

he Farm-to-Table trend is gaining popularity–and for good cause! Fresher food. Seasonal fruits and vegetables. Sourced locally to support the farmers directly. The positives are strong and more than enough reason to check it out more. With 2,500 farm families in Delaware, you know it’s got to be fresh when you shop at our local farmers markets. From spring through fall, you’ll be confident your produce and products are going to be delicious. And local! Visiting these lively markets are a great way to support and celebrate our independent farms. Most are held

weekly and often feature other great, local vendors, but each has a unique personality. Grab your basket, and go on a local tour! The busiest is the Historic Lewes Farmers Market, a Saturday morning go-to for a sizeable and varied selection. With an army of friendly volunteers, and over 30 vendors, this popular market has an exciting atmosphere to draw you in. Bring extra (environmentally friendly) bags for all those extra goodies you’ll grab! (The market’s website shows their passion to connect you to local dairy and agriculture, so be sure to visit after your Saturday outing.)

At nearby Nassau Valley Farmers Market, summer Sunday afternoons have a special draw. Their vineyard features a scenic venue reminiscent of Sonoma Valley, right here in Delaware! Vendors offer produce and local pork products, natural remedies, and even a blade sharpening service. Soak in live music, browse the stalls, or wander into their wine store to enjoy local selections. Closer to the beach, foodies can peruse the Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market. Tuesdays you’ll find local poultry, pickled products, homemade dog biscuits, crab cakes and more, May through October, at this growing market in a parklike setting. Our tip, take your time deciding on those pastries from Old World Breads, and browse the stalls with a warm snack in hand. Just a few miles south, community-led Bethany Beach Farmers Market hosts its local farmers on Saturday mornings. Pick up gorgeous cut flowers and lavender products from Lavender Fields, perfect to bring the outdoors into your home. Or try fragrant local honey from Honey

Bee Apiary. Plan dinner with specialty mushrooms from Davidson Mushrooms and fragrant herbs from Herbs, Spice and Everything Nice. Don’t forget fresh peaches and blueberries from Magee Farms. Another favorite is Riverwalk Farmers Market in historic downtown Milford. Located on the scenic Mispillion Riverwalk, this market features plenty of tempting food, including locally produced cheeses and pairings from The Cheese Board, or mini desserts from Bites of Delight. There are also local artisans, selling sea glass jewelry and more. Live music keeps the crowd entertained. The best way to choose your market destination, confirm their hours and more can be found at Delaware’s Department of Agriculture. Explore the bounty that Delaware offers and connect with this rich ingredients and fresh flavors at your doorstep!
