Coaches will spend time at the beginning going over basic landing technique and safety rolls, after which students will be split into groups to test their skills on the different types of equipment. We are able to work with and incorporate any required gymnastics skills of the Alberta Physical Education curriculum into our workshops. If you are unsure on what you’d like to incorporate in your workshop, we can make suggestions based on what past groups have had fun with. We are able to teach school groups from Kindergarten to Grade 12, and can accommodate groups with as many as 40 at a time. Workshops are typically 60 to 90 minutes long. Depending on availability, we can accommodate longer sessions or create a workshop series.

These are just some of the experiences offered to students of all ages who visit the Alberta Birds of Prey Centre.

hen you visit, a guide will take your students for a walking tour of the centre where they can see and learn about many of the hawks, falcons, eagles and owls native to the grasslands of Alberta. Our theme-based presentations can integrate a variety of curriculum ranging from units on owls or flight to life cycles and endangered wildlife.
Our facility is a working conservation centre dedicated to wildlife rescue and release and creating unique environmental learning opportunities for young people. We are a volunteer-driven, donor-sponsored organization that receives no operating subsidies. The admission fees from your visit will help injured and orphaned birds be returned to the wild. In addition to resident hawks, falcons, eagles and owls, our 70-acre site also features an expansive wetland, home to a variety of wildlife ranging from turtles to muskrats and tree swallows to pelicans.

Book your field trip to the Calgary Zoo today. The zoo isn’t just a great place to visit animals and plants; it’s the perfect place to learn about them too. If you’re looking for a great experience for your class, our curriculum-based programs are the perfect way to make the most of a trip outside the classroom. With guided and self-guided programs available year round, the Calgary Zoo will engage your students’ senses as they discover the wonders of the wild. See our program offerings at calgaryzoo.com or email fun2learn@calgaryzoo.com for more information.
Calgary Zoo
F
rom allosaurus to zebras, ferret conservation to genetic diversity – the Calgary Zoo is a classroom like no other. Nestled between the Bow and Elbow rivers, our site covers 0.3km2 and is home to over 1,000 animals. Over 20,000 schoolchildren take part in our formal programs annually, with another 35,000 visiting on selfguided excursions.
“The zoo inspires awe and wonder in all age groups, and we have programs matched to curriculum for every grade,” shares School Program Coordinator Roz Gilchrist. “While studying the animals, their environments and the plants they rely on, you will see your students have that light bulb moment as a theoretical concept they have been studying comes to life right in front of them.” A team of educators deliver interactive guided tours, hourlong and full-day programs, designed around the latest Alberta curriculum. With a roster of 22 programs for the 2015-2016 school year, the newest inquirybased offerings will be tied to the grade 6 curriculum of Flight and Aerodynamics and an ELA and SS combo on Community Conservation Leadership geared to secondary students in grades 10 – 12. With flight and aerodynamics, we ask: what adaptations are crucial to successful flight? As we explore how birds and other flying animals are built for flight, we’ll look for similarities seen in modern aviation. Using the knowledge of animal adaptations, students will get hands-on as they test different variables in the design of a plane to meet specific requirements. Can their personal jet designs match up to an albatross?
In the lively Community Conservation Leadership program, we combine current events and data from Calgary Zoo conservation projects to get high schoolers debating the best solution for a community initiative. The program is designed to develop communication, critical thinking and team working skills, and students will propose a plan of action for a mock project. Groups will present their solutions and debate the merits and obstacles before learning how experts proceeded. Backpack tours are also new this year. This twist on a self-guided visit allows teachers to reserve a set of pre-prepared backpacks that includes a written tour laden with talking points and prompting questions designed to spark dialogue. Used alongside with animal artifacts and learning resources, the complete kit is yours for the day. Go as fast or as slow as you like while discovering Levels of the African Savannah, Enclosure Design in Eurasia or Hot & Cold in the Canadian Wilds. More themes will be added throughout the year, so check back on the website to see all the ways you can enhance your day at the zoo.

Few art mediums kindle growth and skills in children in the way that clay does. Working with clay is an invaluable experience for sensory development, motor skills, self-esteem, self-expression, problem-solving skills, discipline and pride. Clay also has a uniquely therapeutic quality that settles and calms children. Experience a traditional pottery studio with your students at a field trip to Clay for Kids. Participants can create projects from raw clay through hand building techniques, throwing a pot on the pottery wheel and creating with fused glass.
Your students will learn about: • Where clay originates, what colors are found and what makes the different colors of clay and how we use those colors in glazing; • Clay building techniques; • Clay decorating techniques, including: drape molds, rollers, imprinting with fabrics and stamps; • Finishes available for green ware and bisque ware; • The transformation of clay to green ware, bisque ware and finished glazed pottery; • Storage of raw clay and bisque ware, drying of clay projects, kilns and firing methods; and • Glass fusion materials, projects and firing requirements.

Easter Seals Camp Horizon Inclusion. It’s a buzzword we’re all familiar with. It has positively impacted policy and perspective from classrooms to little league to government. At its essence, the goal is so good, that everyone would feel included no matter their background, age, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. The movement toward inclusion is rooted in the value and practice that everyone feels valued. And yet time and again we hear of examples where inclusion is seen as a checkmark on a task list rather than embraced as a full paradigm shift. The former falls short of creating that meaningful impact that reduces the loneliness of feeling or being treated as marginalized. A simple example. School classrooms for some time now have embraced inclusion by ensuring that students of all abilities can share the same learning opportunities and space, the benefit being that the learning that comes from each other is just as valuable as, if not more so than, what’s taught in the curriculum. And yet, in moments when the act of inclusion is the most important, it is seen as too inconvenient and often abandoned. Take for instance a simple overnight field trip, a rite of passage so vital in an age when kids are finding fewer opportunities to connect with nature or each other in an authentic way, free of devices, screens and schedules. And yet the very essence of a field trip means that we leave the security of the classroom and the urban environment adapted with ramps, pavement, accessible washroom stalls, etc. Imagine a grade 6 student who, through inclusion, attends a mainstream school with his peers despite his diagnosis of cerebral palsy and complex needs. He participates in all school activities right alongside his able bodied peers and seamlessly wheels throughout the school environment. He has been included and everyone feels great about this big step in the right direction. Inclusion has ensured that this
Inspiring potential • Building Community • Enriching Lives
boy doesn’t need to be driven across the city to a specialized school and so his peers and classmates are the same kids he sees in his neighborhood every day. It is a win on so many levels. But is he invited to hang out at the park after school? Is he invited to the birthday parties or the sleepovers? Probably not. Not everyone’s home is equipped with ramps and lifts. And understandably so, parents of typical children are likely quite intimidated by the complexities of his disability. He’s been included at school but has he found a place where he truly feels he belongs? Where he doesn’t see himself as the one child who is different and never fully included? The time comes nearer for his classroom to head off on their overnight field trip adventure. A time and place where memories are formed and stories created that will be retold for years and years to come. Friendships are solidified in a way they can’t in the confines of the classroom and a lifetime of bonding happens in a very short space of time. But the host facility isn’t equipped for full accessibility. The trails are rough and uneven. The buildings are old and not outfitted with push-to-open doors, ramp access or lifts. The staff are untrained to deal with transfers and special diets. And so the simple conclusion is that he will be left behind. The school’s tradition of attending the same facility for field trips supersedes the movement towards inclusion. How could they possibly change this tradition now? The class will go ahead without him. He’ll be “included” in another classroom to carry on his learning while his classmates are away. He won’t know what he’s missing. But upon their return there will be an obvious sense of what he has missed and just how deep the bonding that has occurred within his classmates. For a child who is already on the fringes, he’ll now be further isolated by enduring inside jokes, stories finished with “you should’ve been there!” and a vacuum where the richness of that experience with his “peers” would have filled. A brave smile will appear where loneliness and isolation take hold. What if the school had found an accessible setting for their field trip rather than opting for the “easy” route. They do exist you know…incredible facilities where every ounce of effort has been made to ensure that No One misses
out. What if they had even gone part way by reaching out to some experts for advice and adaptive equipment; there are entire industries designed around planning and creating accessibility. What if they had recognized that in moments like these, inclusion really matters? Would it have been easy? No, not really. But would it have been worth it? You better believe it. The outdoor school experience would have been transformative, not only to that one student but to everyone involved. It would have taught them that inclusion isn’t just for when it’s convenient but for always. When faced with the trail down to the waterfront with the bumps and roots, they’d work together as a team to get their classmate there. And when faced with the challenge of how to all get across the lake, they’d learn about the physics of the outriggers on the specialized canoe and witness the joy on their classmate’s face as he experienced canoeing for the first time in his life. This young man would for once in his life be the centre of attention in a positive way. He’d represent the goal and the puzzle – the ultimate objective of team work. Working together to ensure that no one was left out – could there be a truer lesson in empathy, compassion and caring? All the skills today’s young people are lacking as their focus becomes more and more narcissistic and drawn into their screens and devices. Forced to think not of themselves, but of someone else, someone less fortunate, would be a greater lesson than any curriculum directed outcome. And our young man? He’d be on top of the moon. Experiencing the simple joy of a sleepover with his peers, the feeling of hanging out after school, the feeling of being invited in the party. The feeling of simply being a kid who belongs. And maybe, just maybe a classmate would realize that including him wasn’t so tough and would think twice before passing him over. And isn’t that the ultimate goal? Not to check off a box to say that our programs are “inclusive” but to ensure that every child feels that they belong and to give them a platform to thrive.

Experience first hand how our pioneers lived and worked. Learn how Innisfail started, how it grew, and what it became. Built in 1884, the Spruces is the only remaining “Stopping House” that greeted travelers on the Calgary to Edmonton stagecoach trail. The Spruces and the stagecoach traffic, was eventually replaced with the railroad. The school tour also includes an in depth look at how the railroad worked and the ways in which it transformed Innisfail. “The Role of the Railroad”, highlights the profound effect that the laying of tracks had on the development of our community and province. This program offers a variety of hands-on activities that allow children to experience the way our pioneers lived and worked. There is a large sheltered picnic area for lunches and snacks as well as an indoor hall area if the weather does not cooperate. Hours of Operation: May to September Visit www.innisfailhistory.ca for more info.

Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology is Canada’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the science of palaeontology—the study of plant and animal life through the fossil record. The museum is committed to share this fascinating subject with students in an interactive, educationally rich environment, utilizing innovative programs. Curriculum-fit programs challenge and inspire students to discover the prehistoric past and understand how it relates to the modern world. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic science educators create a sense of wonder and excitement as they make learning an experience to remember. There are 16 different programs available for schools making a day trip to the museum, suitable for students kindergarten through grade 12. New this year is the Dinomechanics program for grades 7 to 9. Working in groups, students explore the mechanics of how dinosaurs moved by comparing them to modern animals. They use their mathematical skills, take measurements of dinosaur skeletons in Dinosaur Hall, and then share their findings with classmates. If travel to Drumheller, Alberta, is not feasible, Distance Learning programs will transport your students to the museum without leaving the classroom. Educators connect live to any classroom computer (with webcam and Internet) or to a videoconferencing system to deliver engaging, curriculum-based programs. The Royal Tyrrell Museum is pleased to acknowledge ATCO as a sponsor of innovative school programming. Its ongoing sponsorship allows the museum to develop and deliver hands-on programs and interactive experiences that are well recognized in the educational community.

Jasper’s Whitewater Rafting
The original Jasper Adventure since 1971! We look forward to welcoming school groups to Canada’s largest Rocky Mountain Park and integral component of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site. Experience a Canadian Heritage River; the Athabasca, which originates from the Columbia Icefield, the largest icefield in the North American Rocky Mountains. Because of its outstanding natural beauty, historical significance and importance for river recreation, the section of the Athabasca River within Jasper National Park has been designated as a Canadian Heritage River. Used by Canada’s First Nations prior to the early 19th century, the river’s upper valley played a significant role in the development of the Canadian west for more than 100 years. A visit to Jasper National Park should include a rafting trip with Jasper’s Whitewater Rafting; offering a unique opportunity to link curriculum and hands-on experience sure to resonate with students. Our guides are swift water rescue certified, as well as certified with the Jasper National Park Interpretation Association. We cater to school group needs offering transportation, heated change rooms and exceptional customer service as well as school group rates.

Help your students discover the wonder of nature at the University of Alberta Devonian Botanic Garden. The award-winning Kids-in-the-Garden environmental education programs engage students in Grades K-12 with hands-on, interactive outdoor activities. In half- or fullday curriculum-based field trips, students might hike natural forests and wetlands, catch an insect or a frog, hug a tree, or become a pollinating bee. All will deepen their connections to the natural world, led by the Garden’s trained naturalists. Kids-in-the-Garden field trips introduce and reinforce the message that outside is awesome, mud is delightful, and plants are really cool. We know our job is done when a child can hold a leech and think it’s lovely, or Build-aBud with their classmates and learn, through play, the parts of a flower. Our objective is to instill in children a joyful appreciation of the natural world, through positive interaction and age-appropriate, authentic programming. Field trips have been offered at the Devonian Botanic Garden for more than 25 years. The 240-acre “garden in a forest”, complete with walking trails, wetlands, indoor showhouses, butterfly house, and Japanese Garden provides the perfect setting for students to discover their world. Field trips are available May through October. For information, visit www.devonian.ualberta.ca or call (780) 987-3054 ext. 2226.

Edmonton Opera
E
very year, hundreds of students gather in the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium to witness the final dress rehearsal for each of Edmonton Opera’s mainstage productions. The CIBC Education Dress Rehearsals are a unique opportunity for students to experience live opera first hand, with lavish sets, costumes, and world-renowned talent on stage, accompanied by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in the pit. We also provide detailed education guides to enhance the learning component of each operatic adventure. This year, we are delighted to showcase a season of captivating shows, beginning with Turandot, a Puccini masterpiece set in mythical ancient China. As one of the most widely produced operas in history, Turandot gives students the perfect introduction to the art form in all its opulent glory. Then, a familiar rags-to-riches fairytale takes the stage in Rossini’s Cinderella. Be one of the first audiences to enjoy our brand new production inspired by the world of 1950’s
high fashion. Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Rossini’s classic, our matinee performance promises feel-good music and laugh-out-loud comedy for students of all ages. Finally, delve into an intense psychological drama with Strauss’s Elektra. The protagonist of this Greek tragedy will stop at nothing to avenge the death of her father, taking students on a high-octane journey as Elektra’s world spirals completely out of control. Bringing your students to the opera sparks their creativity and encourages an appreciation for a variety of art forms; Edmonton Opera integrates orchestral music, unamplified singing, and scenic design to create grand productions that exemplify the power of live performance.

Centrally located just North of Downtown Edmonton, Laser City and Edmonton Paintball Centre offer a field trip option for every type of group. For the youngest of players (ages 4-7), Hero Tag is a great activity that is designed to not be scary or intimidating. Played in a brightly-lit arena, players wear wireless vests with built-in super hero capes while tagging each other with their unique non-gun blasters. Great for kids who have never played laser tag and are perhaps scared of the dark or getting lost in a maze. For those ages 6+ (and adults!), laser tag is an adrenaline pumping experience in our black-lit multi-level arena. Armed with lightweight phasers and vests, teams must work together to dominate the game.
Mini Paintball is a new take on traditional paintball allowing children ages 8-12 the chance to play paintball without the fear of getting hit. Mini Paintball guns are smaller and shoot smaller paintballs at slower speeds. Players ages 10+ (and adults!) FullSized Paintball can experience the ultimate thrill of paintball in our two indoor paintball fields; The Town and The Fort.
Groups from 8 to 80 people are welcome, with free parking and lunch options available.

So Much More Than Just Dinosaurs! The interactive, inquiry-based programs at the Jurassic Forest and Learning Centre will take students and teachers back in time to discover prehistoric flora and fauna, while highlighting the beauty and diversity of the modern forest ecosystem. The educational programs at Jurassic Forest were designed to meet Alberta Curriculum targets for Grades 1-7. Jasper
- Your perfect field trip destination in any season!
Ski Marmot Basin
Jasper SkyTram
Mid-November to Early May
April to Late October
Marmot Basin is the only ski area in Jasper National Park, an 11,000 square kilometer wilderness, which is part of the UNESCO Canadian Rockies World Heritage Site. A truly unique skiing destination that is a feast for the eyes. With breathtaking mountain vistas, 86 runs and 3,000 vertical feet of varied terrain on 1,675 acres, Marmot Basin offers a mountain of opportunities. With the highest base elevation of any major ski area in Canada, Marmot Basin enjoys abundant dry, natural snow from November to May that is a dream to ski and snowboard! Let us take care of you! The goal of our Group Sales Team is to make your school group experience hassle-free and convenient. Pre-booked lift tickets, rentals and lessons are all organized and ready when your group arrives at the mountain. At Marmot Basin you will receive the highest quality professional instruction. The role of our instructors is not only to educate students on the finer points of skiing and snowboarding but also to act as knowledgeable, responsible and vigilant guides for every student under their care. Learn more than just skiing or snowboarding with the Marmot Learning Centre: • Canada’s only ski-in, ski-out classroom • High tech classroom at mid-mountain • Course instruction by Parks Canada staff from the Palisades Stewardship Education Centre, ski patrol and public safety specialists • Choice of sessions on Geocaching, Avalanche Awareness, Species at Risk or Emergency Situations (science and social studies curriculum linked) • Three credit Winter Travel courses for Grades 1012 (four day residential program at the Palisades Stewardship Education Centre and Marmot Basin). For an unforgettable ski and learning experience in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, Marmot Basin and Jasper have no equal!
If you are looking to experience higher education, then the Jasper SkyTram is a “must” field trip this school year. The longest and highest guided aerial tramway in Canada offers the best view in Jasper National Park and is conveniently located eight kilometers from Jasper. The Jasper SkyTram is an excellent field trip that encompasses three different ecological zones and a diversity of animals and plants. Students will be actively involved in the learning experience as soon as they enter the tram cabins. As the tram soars towards the upper station a guide will provide information about the surrounding river systems and mountain ranges. Once you arrive at the top, teachers are free to lead their students as they explore the summit trail and take in the amazing views of the Canadian Rockies from an elevation of 2,500 metres. Climate, geology, soil, plants, animals and humans all interact in one large complex web of life. In Jasper, this web is especially fragile. Here existence depends on the intricate relationships between flora and fauna, weather and landscape. These relationships, called ecosystems, can be upset by the smallest of changes, affecting even the largest of animals, including Jasper’s monarch, the grizzly bear. Take advantage of our breakfast or lunch meal options served at the upper station before or after your exploration of the area. A visit to Jasper SkyTram will be an unforgettable experience that your students will remember for years to come. See you on the mountain! (Contact information on the inside back cover)
