ACSSA & Rothney Observatory Looking for a unique and engaging learning opportunity for your grade six students? Trees & Forests, and Animal Flight are explored together with Sky Science in a memorable program. This fun and completely hands on program introduces the vital importance of the stewardship of the dark night sky. The program is designed to define light pollution for students and importantly involves students in problem solving and solutions towards light pollution abatement. The Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area and the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory have created a partnership that will inspire connections and a love of nature within the nocturnal environment. Students will visit both sites on a single date. The first stop is the

ASCCA where through hands-on outdoor experiential learning programs, your students will learn about the majestic night sky. The next stop is the RAO. After a dinner break students will learn about the importance of dark skies to Astronomy. The program focus is on the ecological importance of a dark sky. It is now recognized by the scientific community that the proliferation of outdoor lighting has a significant impact on the health and behaviour of wildlife and humans, including the disruption of natural circadian rhythms. Students will develop an understanding of how artificial light directly impacts them and the world. Students will learn about the interaction of wildlife in a forest ecosystem and their need for dark skies.

Easter Seals Camp Horizon Inclusion. It’s a buzzword we’re all familiar with. It has positively impacted policy and perspective from classrooms to little league to government. At its essence, the goal is so good, that everyone would feel included no matter their background, age, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. The movement toward inclusion is rooted in the value and practice that everyone feels valued. And yet time and again we hear of examples where inclusion is seen as a checkmark on a task list rather than embraced as a full paradigm shift. The former falls short of creating that meaningful impact that reduces the loneliness of feeling or being treated as marginalized. A simple example. School classrooms for some time now have embraced inclusion by ensuring that students of all abilities can share the same learning opportunities and space, the benefit being that the learning that comes from each other is just as valuable as, if not more so than, what’s taught in the curriculum. And yet, in moments when the act of inclusion is the most important, it is seen as too inconvenient and often abandoned. Take for instance a simple overnight field trip, a rite of passage so vital in an age when kids are finding fewer opportunities to connect with nature or each other in an authentic way, free of devices, screens and schedules. And yet the very essence of a field trip means that we leave the security of the classroom and the urban environment adapted with ramps, pavement, accessible washroom stalls, etc. Imagine a grade 6 student who, through inclusion, attends a mainstream school with his peers despite his diagnosis of cerebral palsy and complex needs. He participates in all school activities right alongside his able bodied peers and seamlessly wheels throughout the school environment. He has been included and everyone feels great about this big step in the right direction. Inclusion has ensured that this

boy doesn’t need to be driven across the city to a specialized school and so his peers and classmates are the same kids he sees in his neighborhood every day. It is a win on so many levels. But is he invited to hang out at the park after school? Is he invited to the birthday parties or the sleepovers? Probably not. Not everyone’s home is equipped with ramps and lifts. And understandably so, parents of typical children are likely quite intimidated by the complexities of his disability. He’s been included at school but has he found a place where he truly feels he belongs? Where he doesn’t see himself as the one child who is different and never fully included? The time comes nearer for his classroom to head off on their overnight field trip adventure. A time and place where memories are formed and stories created that will be retold for years and years to come. Friendships are solidified in a way they can’t in the confines of the classroom and a lifetime of bonding happens in a very short space of time. But the host facility isn’t equipped for full accessibility. The trails are rough and uneven. The buildings are old and not outfitted with push-to-open doors, ramp access or lifts. The staff are untrained to deal with transfers and special diets. And so the simple conclusion is that he will be left behind. The school’s tradition of attending the same facility for field trips supersedes the movement towards inclusion. How could they possibly change this tradition now? The class will go ahead without him. He’ll be “included” in another classroom to carry on his learning while his classmates are away. He won’t know what he’s missing. But upon their return there will be an obvious sense of what he has missed and just how deep the bonding that has occurred within his classmates. For a child who is already on the fringes, he’ll now be further isolated by enduring inside jokes, stories finished with “you should’ve been there!” and a vacuum where the richness of that experience with his “peers” would have filled. A brave smile will appear where loneliness and isolation take hold. What if the school had found an accessible setting for their field trip rather than opting for the “easy” route. They do exist you know…incredible facilities where every ounce of effort has been made to ensure that No One misses

out. What if they had even gone part way by reaching out to some experts for advice and adaptive equipment; there are entire industries designed around planning and creating accessibility. What if they had recognized that in moments like these, inclusion really matters? Would it have been easy? No, not really. But would it have been worth it? You better believe it. The outdoor school experience would have been transformative, not only to that one student but to everyone involved. It would have taught them that inclusion isn’t just for when it’s convenient but for always. When faced with the trail down to the waterfront with the bumps and roots, they’d work together as a team to get their classmate there. And when faced with the challenge of how to all get across the lake, they’d learn about the physics of the outriggers on the specialized canoe and witness the joy on their classmate’s face as he experienced canoeing for the first time in his life. This young man would for once in his life be the centre of attention in a positive way. He’d represent the goal and the puzzle – the ultimate objective of team work. Working together to ensure that no one was left out – could there be a truer lesson in empathy, compassion and caring? All the skills today’s young people are lacking as their focus becomes more and more narcissistic and drawn into their screens and devices. Forced to think not of themselves, but of someone else, someone less fortunate, would be a greater lesson than any curriculum directed outcome. And our young man? He’d be on top of the moon. Experiencing the simple joy of a sleepover with his peers, the feeling of hanging out after school, the feeling of being invited in the party. The feeling of simply being a kid who belongs. And maybe, just maybe a classmate would realize that including him wasn’t so tough and would think twice before passing him over. And isn’t that the ultimate goal? Not to check off a box to say that our programs are “inclusive” but to ensure that every child feels that they belong and to give them a platform to thrive.

A FIELDTRIP THAT COMES TO YOU! CAP is composed of one hour, hands-on presentations delivered by volunteers in your classroom. Presentations are based on volunteer availability and are offered free of charge between March and June of each year. The goal of the local farmers, ranchers and agri-food experts who make up CAP’s volunteer base is to offer rural and urban elementary students a unique opportunity to learn about where their food comes from and why agriculture is important.

CAP is a multi-commodity initiative supported by Agriculture For Life, Alberta Barley Commission, Alberta Beef Producers, Alberta Canola Producers Commission, Alberta Chicken Producers, Egg Producers of Alberta, Alberta Pulse Growers Commission, Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, Alberta Pork, Eastern Irrigation District, Alberta Irrigation Projects Association, Alberta Institute of Agrologists, Alberta Milk, and the Alberta Wheat Commission.

In the 2016-17 school year almost 23,000 students participated in CAP across the province.

This endeavour is endorsed by the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Minister of Education.

Attention Grade 4 Teachers! Some comments from teachers Complete, interactive and so interesting! Content and presentation is so very valuable for our students.

Register for a FREE one hour presentation on agriculture. CAP is an in-class presentation that complements the grade four curriculum. Students will learn about:

It is important for kids to have the knowledge and appreciation for where their food comes from! I think the presentation was an excellent introduction into the meaning of agriculture and food production.

* The food they eat and where it comes from * Opportunities in agriculture * The economic and environmental impact of agriculture Our presentations are delivered by volunteers in the agricultural industry.

Presentations will occur in the Spring. Registration deadline is December 15. Register online at www.classroomagriculture.com. Programs are offered based on volunteer availability. childfest.com For over 35 years, the International Children’s Festival of the Arts has provided kids with an entertaining and educational arts and culture experience. A staple event across northern Alberta and beyond each spring, children are launched into a colourful world that allows them to imagine, laugh, learn and, above all, make memories to last a lifetime! Studies continue to show that involving children in arts experiences strengthens their cognitive skills which in turn improves school performance. In short, exposure to events like the Festival puts kids on a path towards a lifetime of innovative thinking, creative expression and self confidence.

“Knowing that their small school with your help is able to expose their child to world class theatre and thought provoking hands-on activities is very much appreciated by our parent community. We were able to choose activities that served the individual classroom and the students and staff absolutely enjoyed their day […] this field trip was the highlight of our school year.” ~ Edmonton elementary school principal

“On behalf of our staff and students, thank you for providing this experience. The memories created on this day will last their lifetimes.” ~ Edmonton elementary school teacher

One of the largest and longest running children’s festivals in North America, this extraordinary sixday event attracts over 50,000 participants each year. Hosting local, national and international artists, the Festival is programmed to allow kids to experience a variety of cultures, performance disciplines and hands-on, interactive activities that will not only keep them engaged, but also foster a lifelong appreciation and understanding for authentic arts experiences. Selected programming is presented in both official languages, as well as each show and activity has carefully thought out curriculum connections. The Festival is also proud to showcase the cultures that helped shape our country including Canada’s founding Peoples.

Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology is Canada’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the science of palaeontology—the study of plant and animal life through the fossil record. The Museum is committed to sharing this fascinating subject with students in an interactive and educationally rich environment. Curriculumfit programs challenge and inspire students to discover the prehistoric past and understand how it relates to the modern world. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic science educators create a sense of wonder and excitement as they make learning an experience to remember. There are 16 different programs available for schools making a day trip to the Museum suitable for students in kindergarten through grade 12. New this year is the Ancient Plants and Pollen program for grades four to six. Students discover the world of plants in our Cretaceous Garden exhibit. Working in groups, they are assigned a

specific plant and complete a series of inquirybased activities to see where it fits in the forest ecosystem. The Museum has also modified the Ancient Alberta Rocks program (grades three to six) to have stronger ties with the science and social studies curriculums. If travel to Drumheller, Alberta, is not feasible, Distance Learning programs will transport your students to the Museum without leaving the classroom. Educators connect live to any classroom computer (with webcam and Internet), or to a videoconferencing system to deliver engaging, curriculum-based programs. The Royal Tyrrell Museum is pleased to acknowledge ATCO as a sponsor of innovative school programming. Its ongoing sponsorship allows the Museum to develop and deliver handson programs and interactive experiences that are well recognized in the educational community.

Botanic Garden AWARD-WINNING

SCHOOL FIELD TRIP PROGRAMS Ponds - Insects - Plants - Forests - Animals Conserving Biodiversity - Much More

Help your students discover the wonder of nature at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden. The award-winning Kids-in-the-Garden environmental education programs engage students in Grades K-12 with hands-on, interactive outdoor learning. In half- or full-day, curriculum-based field trips, students might hike through natural forests and wetlands, catch an insect or a frog, hug a tree, or become a pollinating bee. All will deepen their connections to the natural world, led by the Garden’s trained naturalists. Kids-in-the-Garden field trips introduce and reinforce the message that outside is awesome, mud is delightful, and plants are really cool. We know our job is done when a child can hold a leech and think it’s lovely, or Build-aBud with their classmates and learn, through play, the parts of a flower. Our objective is to instill in children a joyful appreciation of the natural world, through positive interaction and age-appropriate, authentic programming.

Every year, hundreds of students gather in the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium to experience the final dress rehearsal for each of Edmonton Opera’s mainstage productions. The CIBC Student Dress Rehearsals are a unique opportunity for students to see live opera first hand, with lavish sets, costumes, and world-renowned talent on stage, accompanied by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in the pit. We also provide detailed education guides to enhance the learning component of each operatic adventure. This year, we are delighted to showcase a season of three breathtaking shows, beginning with Les Feluettes (Lilies), a new Canadian masterpiece that has been dubbed ‘Quebec’s own Romeo and Juliet’. Lilies offers students insights into art history, religion, and Quebecois culture while staging a timeless love story.

For our spectacular winter matinee performance, we present Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore in a new 1920s Jazz Age production. This musical comedy will have students of all ages laughing and cheering as a group of quirky sailors cause mayhem on the high seas! Finally, opera’s ultimate heartbreaker returns in our stylish new production of Don Giovanni. This classic opera is an important piece in the history of music — master composer Mozart brings together elements of comedy, tragedy, and the supernatural to create a spellbinding score. Bringing your students to the opera sparks their creativity and encourages an appreciation for a variety of art forms; Edmonton Opera integrates orchestral music, unamplified singing, and scenic design to create grand productions that exemplify the power of live performance.

Centrally located just North of Downtown Edmonton, Laser City and Edmonton Paintball Centre offer a field trip option for every type of group. For the youngest of players (ages 4-7), Hero Tag is a great activity that is designed to not be scary or intimidating. Played in a brightly-lit arena, players wear wireless vests with built-in super hero capes while tagging each other with their unique non-gun blasters. Great for kids who have never played laser tag and are perhaps scared of the dark or getting lost in a maze. For those ages 6+ (and adults!), laser tag is an adrenaline pumping experience in our black-lit multi-level arena. Armed with lightweight phasers and vests, teams must work together to dominate the game.

Mini Paintball is a new take on traditional paintball allowing children ages 8-12 the chance to play paintball without the fear of getting hit. Mini Paintball guns are smaller and shoot smaller paintballs at slower speeds. Players ages 10+ (and adults!) FullSized Paintball can experience the ultimate thrill of paintball in our two indoor paintball fields; The Town and The Fort.

Groups from 8 to 80 people are welcome, with free parking and lunch options available.

The instructor smiles. “It’s a claw!” she proclaims. The students smile back. A few nudge their friends as if to say, ‘I told you so!’ “Does anyone want to touch it?” the instructor asks. All hands shoot into the air without hesitation. At the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, education programs and fieldtrips are more than just a lecture on dinosaurs. Students from kindergarten to grade 12 will discover prehistoric life hands-on, both in the bright, engaging classrooms, and out in the galleries. They will learn about the animals that lived millions of years in the past and how they continue to influence the present. But perhaps best of all, they will come away with a renewed energy for discovery, eager to show off what they learned and hungry to learn more! Education programs comply with official Alberta curriculum requirements for each grade, include access to the galleries, and start as low as $6 per student, with options to include hot lunches, scavenger hunts, a film in the Akyroyd Family Theatre, and more!
