But there was a time in the ancient world when at least one was called “King.” Dr. Kara Cooney, professor of Egyptology, will introduce you to some strong female leaders, whose power was compromised from the start.

Our sites are perfect for church retreats, youth getaways, business meetings, scout groups, and family gatherings. Both sites offer a great variety of programs, including horseback riding, archery, wall climbing, and leadership programming. We’ve welcomed many types and sizes of groups, such as outdoor education programs, school bands, youth retreats and family getaways. The Calgary Zoo Conservation Education team inspires 30,000 students each year through curriculumconnected programs. Designed to engage students onsite and online, we provide a range of options to meet your class’s needs. From virtual sessions in our distance learning stream to multi-program action packs that culminate with your students educating zoo visitors, specific learning objectives are enhanced with unique artifacts, interactive tours and student-led discussions. Our living classroom sparks meaningful conversations by encouraging observation and deep inquiry – you and your students will connect with content in truly remarkable ways. “The goal with all of our programs is to build connections with wildlife and wild places while inspiring actions students can take to keep them wild,” shares School Program Coordinator Jen Duffy. “Conservation educators breathe life into concepts and themes that many students don’t have a chance to experience first-hand. “Examining an Amur tiger skull, exploring the genotype of a corn snake they just touched, or observing grizzly bears forage are just a few of the opportunities we have to bring curriculum to life.”

Easter Seals Camp Horizon Inclusion. It’s a buzzword we’re all familiar with. It has positively impacted policy and perspective from classrooms to little league to government. At its essence, the goal is so good, that everyone would feel included no matter their background, age, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. The movement toward inclusion is rooted in the value and practice that everyone feels valued. And yet time and again we hear of examples where inclusion is seen as a checkmark on a task list rather than embraced as a full paradigm shift. The former falls short of creating that meaningful impact that reduces the loneliness of feeling or being treated as marginalized. A simple example. School classrooms for some time now have embraced inclusion by ensuring that students of all abilities can share the same learning opportunities and space, the benefit being that the learning that comes from each other is just as valuable as, if not more so than, what’s taught in the curriculum. And yet, in moments when the act of inclusion is the most important, it is seen as too inconvenient and often abandoned. Take for instance a simple overnight field trip, a rite of passage so vital in an age when kids are finding fewer opportunities to connect with nature or each other in an authentic way, free of devices, screens and schedules. And yet the very essence of a field trip means that we leave the security of the classroom and the urban environment adapted with ramps, pavement, accessible washroom stalls, etc. Imagine a grade 6 student who, through inclusion, attends a mainstream school with his peers despite his diagnosis of cerebral palsy and complex needs. He participates in all school activities right alongside his able bodied peers and seamlessly wheels throughout the school environment. He has been included and everyone feels great about this big step in the right direction. Inclusion has ensured that this

boy doesn’t need to be driven across the city to a specialized school and so his peers and classmates are the same kids he sees in his neighborhood every day. It is a win on so many levels. But is he invited to hang out at the park after school? Is he invited to the birthday parties or the sleepovers? Probably not. Not everyone’s home is equipped with ramps and lifts. And understandably so, parents of typical children are likely quite intimidated by the complexities of his disability. He’s been included at school but has he found a place where he truly feels he belongs? Where he doesn’t see himself as the one child who is different and never fully included? The time comes nearer for his classroom to head off on their overnight field trip adventure. A time and place where memories are formed and stories created that will be retold for years and years to come. Friendships are solidified in a way they can’t in the confines of the classroom and a lifetime of bonding happens in a very short space of time. But the host facility isn’t equipped for full accessibility. The trails are rough and uneven. The buildings are old and not outfitted with push-to-open doors, ramp access or lifts. The staff are untrained to deal with transfers and special diets. And so the simple conclusion is that he will be left behind. The school’s tradition of attending the same facility for field trips supersedes the movement towards inclusion. How could they possibly change this tradition now? The class will go ahead without him. He’ll be “included” in another classroom to carry on his learning while his classmates are away. He won’t know what he’s missing. But upon their return there will be an obvious sense of what he has missed and just how deep the bonding that has occurred within his classmates. For a child who is already on the fringes, he’ll now be further isolated by enduring inside jokes, stories finished with “you should’ve been there!” and a vacuum where the richness of that experience with his “peers” would have filled. A brave smile will appear where loneliness and isolation take hold. What if the school had found an accessible setting for their field trip rather than opting for the “easy” route. They do exist you know…incredible facilities where every ounce of effort has been made to ensure that No One misses

out. What if they had even gone part way by reaching out to some experts for advice and adaptive equipment; there are entire industries designed around planning and creating accessibility. What if they had recognized that in moments like these, inclusion really matters? Would it have been easy? No, not really. But would it have been worth it? You better believe it. The outdoor school experience would have been transformative, not only to that one student but to everyone involved. It would have taught them that inclusion isn’t just for when it’s convenient but for always. When faced with the trail down to the waterfront with the bumps and roots, they’d work together as a team to get their classmate there. And when faced with the challenge of how to all get across the lake, they’d learn about the physics of the outriggers on the specialized canoe and witness the joy on their classmate’s face as he experienced canoeing for the first time in his life. This young man would for once in his life be the centre of attention in a positive way. He’d represent the goal and the puzzle – the ultimate objective of team work. Working together to ensure that no one was left out – could there be a truer lesson in empathy, compassion and caring? All the skills today’s young people are lacking as their focus becomes more and more narcissistic and drawn into their screens and devices. Forced to think not of themselves, but of someone else, someone less fortunate, would be a greater lesson than any curriculum directed outcome. And our young man? He’d be on top of the moon. Experiencing the simple joy of a sleepover with his peers, the feeling of hanging out after school, the feeling of being invited in the party. The feeling of simply being a kid who belongs. And maybe, just maybe a classmate would realize that including him wasn’t so tough and would think twice before passing him over. And isn’t that the ultimate goal? Not to check off a box to say that our programs are “inclusive” but to ensure that every child feels that they belong and to give them a platform to thrive.

DEPLOY YOUR NEXT FIELD TRIP TO THE MUSEUMS Where else in Alberta can you learn about places, people, and events surrounded by real Canadian Forces tanks and fighter jets? Our interactive programs bring curriculum to life while teaching students about Canada’s history. We make history fun while giving students a glimpse into the life of a soldier and the events that shaped Canada as a nation. Our education packages contain two to three programs comprised of presentations, tours and art activities. Each package covers key curriculum points in relation to each grade level. Programs are adapted to new upcoming Alberta curriculum. New programs for 2018-2019 include the Centennial of the 1918 Armistice and Remembrance, Buoyancy and Flight, War of 1812, Indigenous Veterans, Peacekeeping and Afghanistan. All education programs are taught by education interpreters with the Military Museums Foundation, a non-profit educational organization which brings Canadian heritage to life.

GRANARY ROAD Using an interactive learning approach, we offer curriculumbased field trip options centered around 12 themed exhibits. Our facility, which is spread over 36 acres and features 3.5 kilometers of trails, delivers hands-on activities that positively impact the students’ minds. We bring FUN to every opportunity, while creating unique experiences: Granary Road takes children on a journey that inspires effective education. Through Hands-activities, engaging videos and interactive leaning opportunities, Granary Road delivers content aligned with Alberta’s teaching curriculum. Where the park is a learning environment in its entirety, each individual exhibit sets down a unique educational proposition through learning walls, questionnaires and fun activity features. “Ant Farm Adventure” features a larger than life, four storey structure with slides, ant eggs, statues and climbing nets, children will learn about anatomy, any colonies, and all about life from an ant’s point of view. “Arachnid Web” features a giant web climber which teaches children about spider webs, the anatomy of an arachnid, and various types of spiders. “Mushroom Meander” takes children through an enchanted mushroom forest, through tunnels, and up to

a lookout tower! They will get to explore the anatomy of a mushroom, learn about poisonous mushrooms and find out about mushroom DNA. “Wetland discovery” homes many amphibians, insects and plants, with the goal of teaching about

Alberta’s ecosystem and its inhabitants. Our brand-new Aquaponics Centre teaches about how fish and plants grow in one ecosystem creating what is essentially zero waste agriculture. Climb, Crawl, Discover at Granary Road.

ALBERTA AVIATION MUSEUM For more than 80 years Edmonton’s Blatchford Field was the centre of a bustling aviation community that spurred the growth of the city, the region and the North. Hundreds of men and women let their dreams take flight from this historic airfield, flying everything from biplanes to bush planes, bombers to jets. The Alberta Aviation Museum is committed to keeping that aviation heritage alive by sharing their stories, offering educational programs and producing online content.

Gymnastics for All!

Unique and Exciting! Most students would say that the best field trips are about having fun, while most teachers feel that field trips should be about education.

What you need to provide: •

So where is the happy medium?

Here at Ortona, we combine fun games, activities and gymnastics circuits to create a field trip that is not only engaging and exciting but also physically challenging and educational for every grade level.

We offer field trips year-round for all grades and for students of all abilities including special needs. Promoting physical literacy is beneficial for improving academic performance, cognitive skills, mental health, psychological wellness, social skills, and healthy lifestyle habits.

Why choose gymnastics? Gymnastics helps develop self-esteem, selfdiscipline, self-awareness, and utilizes physical literacy to form the healthy foundation for an active lifestyle. Gymnastics is one of the three foundation sports decreed by the International Olympic Committee; and is the ultimate human movement experience.

Schools and groups are responsible for the transportation of their students to and from our facility; Each participant’s guardian is required to provide a completed waiver; Teacher and parents volunteers welcome with a completed waiver.

Ortona provides the instructors, physical activity, and fun!

What we offer:

Bring your students to experience and enjoy a range of exciting sports, games, and other recreational and fitness activities at one of Canada’s premier universities. We offer multiple sessions to fit each school’s needs: • 1 hour of gymnastics and fitness games inside Ortona’s facility • 1.5 hours of gymnastics and fitness games inside Ortona’s facility • 2 hours of gymnastics and fitness games inside Ortona’s facility • Full day multi-sport session featuring Ortona’s facility as well as various areas of the Saville Sports Centre’s gyms.

Ortona Gymnastics Club is a not-for-profit, independent sports organization that was formally incorporated in 1976.

Please contact us for further program details, pricing, or to book your field trip:

As one of the oldest gymnastics clubs in Edmonton with roots stretching back to 1972, Ortona has a long history of community involvement, athlete development and child/youth sport activity and movement. Ortona is very proud of its legacy in the Edmonton community.

Email: fieldtrips@ortonagymnastics.com Phone: (780) 492 – 7492 and leave a message for the field trip coordinator.

We look forward to your participation in gymnastics at our club. You are never too young — or too old — to gain something positive from the sport of gymnastics at Ortona.

International Children’s Festival of the Arts Connecting the classroom to the world For nearly 40 years the International Children’s Festival of the Arts has provided students with an entertaining, educational and authentic arts experience. Located in the heart of St. Albert, this extraordinary six-day event remains one of the largest and longest-running children’s festivals in North America – attracting over 40,000 participants and 400 volunteers each spring. “The offerings are so diverse. There is always so much to do and not enough time! Kids always have such a great time.” ~ 2019 Teacher Survey Response Through world-class programming in music, dance and theatre as well as literary, visual and circus arts, kids are exposed to a bigger and more exciting world where possibilities and curiosities are endless. A staple event across the Edmonton Metropolitan Region and northern Alberta, the Festival is host to local, national and international artists who challenge kids to think outside the box, explore their imaginations, and above all, make memories to last a lifetime! “I love the opportunity to give kids experiences outside of the classroom! Some of our students would never have the chance to attend with their families.” ~2019 Teacher Survey Response Studies continue to show that involving children in arts experiences strengthens their cognitive skills which, in turn, improves school performance. In short, exposure to events like the Festival puts kids on a solid path of innovative thinking, creative expression and self-confidence. Selected programming is presented in both official languages, and each performance and workshop has carefully researched curriculum connections. The Festival is also programmed to allow kids to not only experience a variety of performance disciplines, but also cultures – including Canada’s founding Peoples and those that helped shape our country. “The location is exceptional and there are plenty of volunteers to help when needed. The variety of performances was awesome and allowed my class to enjoy completely different experiences!” ~2019 Teacher Survey Response From flexible ticket packages to supports such as calming zones, enhanced colourcoded wayfinding and kits equipped with noise and light dampening devices, the Festival remains committed to providing equal access to all participants. “I love everything about the Festival – ease of booking, variety of entertainment, helpful staff and volunteers, organized layout, as well as convenient school bus loading and unloading. I have been attending for four years and each year the Festival grows and strives to make things work better than the year before. It’s a well-oiled machine!” ~ 2019 Teacher Survey Response Whether we read it in a book or see it on a screen, something that seems so impossible or out of reach suddenly becomes real and achievable when we experience it first hand. So - take the time to grow, develop and nurture our community, ourselves, and most importantly, our children.

Don't miss out on the best field trip of the year!

The award-winning Kids-in-the-Garden environmental education programs engage students in Grades K-12 with hands-on, interactive outdoor activities. In half- or full-day curriculum-based field trips, students might hike natural forests and wetlands, catch an insect or a frog, hug a tree, or become a pollinating bee. All will deepen their connections to the natural world, led by the Garden’s trained interpreters. Kids-in-the-Garden field trips introduce and reinforce the message that outside is awesome, mud is delightful, and plants are really cool. We know our job is done when a child can hold a leech and think it’s lovely, or Build-a-Bud with their classmates and learn, through play, the parts of a flower. Our objective is to instill in children a joyful appreciation of the natural world, through positive interaction and age-appropriate, authentic programming. Field trips have been offered at the U of A Botanic Garden since the early 1980’s. The 240-acre “garden in a forest”, complete with walking trails, wetlands, indoor showhouses, butterfly house, Japanese Garden and the stunning new Aga Khan Garden, provides the perfect setting for students to discover their world. FIELD TRIPS ARE AVAILABLE MAY THROUGH OCTOBER.

Preserve. Educate. Inspire. Immerse your students in Alberta’s rich history with hands-on lessons. The museum and educational programs at two designated historic sites— the 1881 Schoolhouse and Historic McKay Avenue School—offer students a window into the past. Bring the curriculum to life with: • 1880s lessons in Edmonton’s first public school • activities from the 1930s • a mock provincial election and debate in the restored 1906 Legislative Chamber To book a program, call 780-422-1970 or email archivesmuseum@epsb.ca. 10425 99 Ave NW, Edmonton AB
