National Music Centre Offers Learning Through the Lens of Music
Since opening in 2016, Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre (NMC), has inspired music lovers of all ages, and realized its mission of amplifying the love, sharing, and understanding of music in Canada.
Through NMC’s school programs, the organization offers hands-on programs based on Alberta’s K-12 curriculum. Featuring items from National Music Centre’s rare and unique collection, NMC programs are led by talented musician educators who make concepts come to life. Indeed, it’s a must-do for teachers looking for fun and stimulating field trip ideas.
“Prior to the pandemic, we welcomed over 15,000 students a year to be inspired through music,” said Paige Foley, NMC’s Programs Manager. “We’re thrilled to invite students back to our building to explore the story of music in Canada in a breathtaking space and have a blast in the process.”
Teachers can choose between a guided experience with NMC’s educators, which is designed to target multiple aspects of the Alberta curriculum, or a self-guided package through five floors of exhibitions.

East Coulee School Museum
The East Coulee School Museum is located in historic East Coulee, part of the Drumheller Valley. The School was originally a four room school house with an additional eight rooms added in 1944 as the town grew in size due to the rise in the local coal industry. The Museum highlights the importance of the school during the 1930’s and 1940’s through the Miss. Morrison Program. The program takes classes through a day in the life of a 1930’s student, complete with spelling test, classroom rules, and punishments for misbehaviour. Students will take on the persona of one of our students and take a part of their history home with them. Students will then be provided a tour of the museum to learn what it was like in a boom town.

Field Trips
BRING YOUR STUDENTS TO GRANARY ROAD FOR THEIR NEXT FIELD TRIP!
Using an interactive learning approach, we offer curriculum-based field trip options centered around 11 themed exhibits. Our facility, which is spread over 36 acres and features 3.5 kilometres of trails, delivers hands-on activities that positively impact the students’ minds. We bring FUN to every opportunity, while creating unique experiences through meaningful modalities. Through hands-on activities, engaging videos, and interactive learning opportunities, Granary Road delivers content aligned with Alberta’s teaching curriculum. Where the Park is a learning environment in its entirety, each individual exhibit sets down a unique educational proposition through learning walls, questionnaires, and fun activity features.
Your Field Trip to Granary Road will include general access to all the exhibits plus three Educational Exhibit Lessons. These are learning opportunities that use interactive activities, engaging videos, and curriculum-based content to elevate comprehension. Each lesson is hosted by our Granary Road Guide and is approximately 25 to 30 minutes in length.
Whether by bus or car, travelling to our venue will be just part of the field trip experience! The sense of adventure will have already begun by the time you’ve hit the road, and we suggest you take this opportunity to further expand on the occasion. Use the travel time to educate, laugh, or just relax!
When you arrive at Granary Road, you will be greeted by our Hosting Team who already has your itinerary set out and ready to go. Simply follow their lead and let the day’s enjoyment unravel!

Field Trips
Visit Medalta Potteries in the Historic Clay District for a 90-minute field trip to tour the museum and create a unique clay project. Specialized field trips are available to target specific learning objectives and are customized to the age/grade of the students.
Day Trips
Day trips allow for more in-depth exploration of the Clay District and connected learning opportunities. This full day experience can be customized for any age/grade or group. The day trip is often used to document information for extended learning in the classroom and always includes a clay project!
Community Classroom Program
This cultural and educational immersion model moves student learning “beyond the classroom” into the Historic Clay District for several days, not hours! Our program engages students in inquiry-based learning and exploration through a host of creative, integrated activities that align with the Alberta Program of Studies. Students learn from a variety of experts and enrich this learning through many journaling and documentation techniques. And of course, every day includes a clay project!
Experience the Friendship at Nikka Yuko
Step into Japan for the day and explore the culture and history at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden!
Located in Lethbridge, Alberta, Nikka Yuko brings the friendship of Japan and Canada to guests of all ages through serene landscapes, guided tours, presentations, and cultural activities. Our hosts and hostesses are ready to create a memorable experience for your class!
Our new cultural centre, the Bunka Centre, will provide new opportunities for immersive classroom activities using technology to tell the stories of those of Japanese descent and their impact in Southern Alberta.
Call us at 403-328-3511or email info@nikkayuko.com to book your field trip today!

art, history & nature
Beautiful in every season, our Art & Nature experience is a 4-hour on-site visit that introduces students, teachers, and parent volunteers to the history, art, and nature of Leighton Art Centre. In addition to completing an art project in our historic art studios, groups join an Art & Nature Educator on a visit to the Leighton Heritage Home and Gallery and explore portions of the 80-acre property, complete with spectacular Rocky Mountain view.
Our Art To Go program is perfect for those who wish to bring the Leighton Art Centre experience right into their classroom. Our educators arrive equipped with stories, visuals, and all the supplies needed for completing an art project. This is a 3-hour program and can be delivered to schools in Calgary and area, or can be delivered as a virtual field trip.
Programs available year-round. Visit our website for more details and book well in advance for best date selection.

Outdoor Education, Leadership, Teambuilding
Kuriakos Outdoor School provides exciting educational programming for all age groups. Throughout its 90 years, Kuriakos has valued belonging, growth, and togetherness; Outdoor School is a terrific opportunity for students to experience these values, in a setting that is different from their usual school routine. Students will be encouraged to learn and to challenge themselves, as they build new relationships and discover common experiences. You’ll be amazed at the difference an Outdoor School experience can make in your students!
We work closely with all our school groups to develop a program that suits each school’s needs. For Christian schools, many activities can also be facilitated to encourage growth in your students’ faith. Haven’t planned something like this before? We have! We are happy to assist with paperwork, parent communication, and other logistics.
Kuriakos is a camp and outdoor centre located at the north end of Sylvan Lake. Since 1930, Kuriakos has been a gathering place for communities from across the province, providing recreation and learning opportunities to hundreds of families.
We welcome you to our site, and invite you to become a part of our community.
For over 40 years the International Children’s Festival of the Arts has provided students with an entertaining, educational and inspirational arts experience. Located in the heart of St. Albert, this extraordinary event remains one of the largest and longestrunning children’s festivals in North America.
The Festival does a great job of making my students feel welcome... I always feel like we belong.” – 2022 Teacher Survey Response
Through world-class programming in music, dance and theatre as well as literary, visual and circus arts, kids are exposed to a bigger and more exciting world where possibilities and curiosities are endless. A staple event across the Edmonton Metropolitan Region and northern Alberta, the Festival is host to local, national and international artists who challenge kids to think outside the box, explore their imaginations, and above all, make memories to last a lifetime!
We had the best time! We had fun dancing, creating and playing with new friends…. The venue was a dream (so much green space for us to explore and the event was an oasis for creative and fun-loving kids! We can’t wait for the next run!”
– 2022 Festivalgoer Facebook comment
Involving children in arts experiences strengthens their social, expressive and cognitive skills which, in turn, improves school performance. In short, exposure to events like the Children’s Festival puts kids on a solid path of innovative thinking, creative expression and self-confidence. Selected
programming is presented in both official languages, and each performance and workshop has carefully researched curriculum connections. The Festival is also programmed to allow kids to not only experience a variety of performance disciplines, but also cultures – including Canada’s Indigenous Peoples and those who helped shape our country.
(The Festival) offered a wide variety of free activities as well as paid options. The free stage produced fantastic performances of all cultures and entertainment!”
– 2022 Teacher Survey Response
From early access to tickets with discounted group rates to supports such as calming zones and sensory kits equipped with noise and light dampening devices, the Festival remains committed to providing equal access to all participants.
The Festival staff (went) above and beyond to include (the child) in every activity the best way they could, and I appreciated it so much!”
– 2022 Festivalgoer and Child’s Caregiver
Whether we read it in a book or see it on a screen, something that seems impossible or out of reach suddenly becomes real and achievable when we experience it firsthand. The Children’s Festival offers classes an opportunity to live those experiences through adventure, imagination and creativity in a safe and engaging environment of fun and learning!
us next spring for the best field trip of the year!

The Laft Hus, a log house with a sod roof, in Downtown Red Deer is a tourist attraction, museum, and cultural centre that opened its doors in 1987. The Laft Hus has a growing collection of antiques and replicas of items used by Norwegian immigrants. Courses are offered to the public in Norwegian arts, crafts, and cooking by very knowledgeable instructors. Our classes include making a traditional Sami (indigenous people of Northern Norway) bracelet, rosemaling (a traditional painting style common in Norway that showcases flower motifs), traditional norwegian knitting classes, and so many more! A small “Butikk” sells crafts, books, and many gift items, as well as traditional Norwegian cooking equipment. . A festival is held in June showcasing Scandinavian culture including goats on the roof, fjord horses, and Viking reenactments. One of the most popular events at the Laft Hus is the annual Craft and Bake Sale that is held in November. Members of the Laft Hus sell homemade Norwegian baked goods, as well as handmade crafts such as rosemaled items, intricate embroidery, and knitted items. The Laft Hus is open year round and members of the Laft Hus and surrounding communities gather for tea or coffee and to work on their various crafting projects getting ready for the Craft and Bake sale. During the summer months, the Laft Hus is open 6 days a week and holds week-long day camps for children! During these camps, parents can expect their child to learn all about Norway and the history of the Vikings. They learn through crafts, games, videos, and other activities. The Laft Hus organizes activities for groups such as schools, daycares, or senior homes. The Laft Hus hosts visitors from all over the world and the members, volunteers, and summer students are always willing to give you a short tour so you can get the most out of your visit.
Visit the Laft Hus at Heritage Square 4402-47 Ave. Red Deer, AB T4N 6T4.

Most students would say that the best field trips are about having fun, while most teachers feel that fi eld trips should be about education.
So where is the happy medium?
Here at Ortona, we combine fun games, activities and gymnastics circuits to create a field trip that is not only engaging and exciting but also physically challenging and educational for every grade level.
We offer field trips year round for all grades and for students of all abilities including special needs.
Promoting physical literacy is beneficial for improving academic performance, cognitive skills, mental health, psychological wellness, social skills, and healthy lifestyle habits.
Why choose gymnastics?
Gymnastics helps develop self esteem, self discipline, self awareness, and utilizes physical literacy to form the healthy f oundation for an active lifestyle.
Gymnastics is one of the three foundation sports decreed by the International Olympic Committee; and is the ultimate human movement experience.
Ortona Gymnastics Club is a not for profit, independent sports organization that was formally incorporated in 1976
As one of the oldest gymnastics clubs in Edmonton with roots stretching back to 1972, Ortona has a long history of community involvement, athlet e development and child/youth sport activity and movement. Ortona is very proud of its legacy in the Edmonton community
We look forward to your participation in gymnastics at our club
You are never too young — or too old — to gain something positive from the sport of gymnastics at Ortona.

ducational. Adventurous. Challenging. Engaging. Empowering. Memorable. Fun. There are few destinations that possess all the qualities of a truly perfect eld trip, but at Canmore Cave Tours we think we come pretty darn close.
Rat’s Nest Cave is a natural, wild cave located a few minutes from Canmore, Alberta, and for over 30 years we’ve been sharing this special place with visitors from all over the world.
In 1987, the cave was designated a Provincial Historic Resource owing to its rich archaeological, paleontological and geologic signi cance. It is home to ancient animal bones, delicate cave formations, and it is one of the few sites in the Bow Valley where pictographs can be viewed. Combine this incredible history with the immersive, exciting experience of exploring one of Canada’s longest caves and you have the makings of a truly unforgettable, educa tional adventure.
There are two options for exploring Rat’s Nest Cave. The Explorer Tour is a 4.5 - 5 hr experience suitable for ages 10+ and for groups of up to 40 participants. The Adventure Tour is approximately 6 – 7 hours in length, with groups of up to 16 participants aged 12 and older. The main di erence between the tours is that the Adventure Tour includes an 18m rappel in the cave for added adventure.
Both tours include a 30 - 40 minute hike to the cave during which our guides will cover a number of di erent topics relating to the cave including, geology, glaciology, mountain formation, cave formation, human and natural history, and much
more. This is a great opportunity for us to begin incorporating a particular curriculum theme into the day if you so choose.
Once at the cave, we get dressed to go under ground, which is where the real excitement begins. We want everyone to feel like real explorers, which means wearing proper caving equipment such as coveralls, kneepads, helmets, lights, harnesses and safety lanyards. All of the equipment is provided, and no experience is needed for its use. Getting dirty is expected, and entirely part of the fun –especially because we do the laundry.
The underground experience is unique for most of our guests. For some it can initially feel intimidating because it is so di erent, but this is a fantastic opportunity to challenge perceptions, push bound aries and to grow. Our team of guides are incredibly skilled at engaging participants in a reassuring, inclusive and empowering way to ensure the best experience for everyone. We will spend the day climbing, crawling, wiggling and sliding through the beautifully sculpted passages of the cave, while learning about the cave’s formation, it’s role in climate science, and its relationship with past and present cultures, for example. There are ample opportunities here to customize our interpretive content to align with your educational goals.
We absolutely pride ourselves in creating an experience that is challenging but safe, educational but fun, and absolutely unforgettable for all of our visitors. Please contact us for more information about how we can create the perfect educational adventure for you.

ALBERTA’S SAFEST TRAMPOLINE PARK
When two-time trampoline gold medal winner Rosie MacLennan was a child, her grandmother had an activity chart at the family cottage and insisted just like at a summer camp that they try a new skill every day. MacLennan and her older brothers Matt and Michael, and older sister Kate, had to prove they could do an activity three times before getting to colour off a square on the chart. Today encouraging young people to be active and try new things can be hard when they are staring down at a screen. It can be even more difficult when the safety of the new activity is questioned.
Trampolines were originally designed in the 1930 as training devices for gymnasts. The uses quickly adapted into several different uses but soon evolved into consumer products as they became more affordable and the backyard trampoline was born.
Trampolines are a great source of aerobic exercise and help develop balance and coordination if used properly, said Dr. Gary Smith, president of the Child Injury Prevention Alliance and spokesman for the American Academy of Pediatrics.
“We really want to encourage people of all ages to be physically active. We just want them to do it in a smart way so they don’t end up decreasing physical activity due to injuries,” said Smith.
It wasn’t until 2002 that the idea allowing kids to jump in a controlled trampoline environment where safety is the focus.
Darren Balderson, the owner operator of Alberta’s first Trampoline Park, LaunchPad Trampoline Park, says the trampolines in his park are specially manufactured for extra stability and endurance. Much greater stability than a typical backyard trampoline. The frames are solid 4 ¾-inch wall steel tubing covered by two inches of high-density foam padding to create give and reduce impact. Backyard trampolines come in a variety of strengths depending on how much the customer is willing to pay. Balderson goes on to say, “Often the padding has worn off these backyard trampolines after a year or two and you’ll have kids jumping 10 feet in the air
with metal framing and springs exposed. Balderson continues, “I can most likely tell you that these backyard trampolines are not getting regularly inspected.”
Trampoline Parks offer the best and safest way for kids to enjoy the feeling of flying in a controlled environment. Since opening in 2013, Launchpad Trampoline Park is proud to have had over 500,000 happy jumpers enjoy the unique feeling of jumping from one trampoline to another to another. Launchpad upholds the safest possible environment and uses the best practices including regular inspections and maintenance of equipment by well trained staff. LaunchPad has dedicated safety coaches to enforce rules and teach proper jumping techniques to kids. There is always a first aid certified staff member to help with any issues. A safety video is provided to inform customer who are new to jumping of the safest ways to navigate the park. Launchpad has the largest foam pit in Canada with foam six feet deep and a bottom layer of high-density foam. It would be impossible for somebody to touch or even find the ground in Launchpad’s massive foam pit.
The safety focus continues as Launchpad has designed their trampolines adjacent to the foam pit with waterfall technology. This technology removes the steel frame of the trampoline on the one side where people jump into the foam pit. There is no metal framing between the trampoline and foam. Not only are all the trampolines in the park double reinforced there is over 15,000 square feet of safety netting under the trampolines. Below each trampoline Installed is a dual layer RocBloc netting that provides secondary fall protection in the event a trampoline mat should fail.
Trampoline parks allow kids to move in a way they have never felt. It expands their mind. Encourages creativity and helps them understand themselves. Rosie MacLennan has said, “The trampoline gym helped me develop confidence. It helped me learn the value of struggle and the opportunities you can have when you face a challenge. It helped give me a positive perspective.”

ARTS COMMONS EDUCATION
Located in the heart of downtown Calgary, Arts Commons is the largest performing arts centre in Western Canada and home to an education program that will help your class make meaningful connections to their curriculum, their community, and themselves through the arts.
Treat your class to a live performance in the stunning Jack Singer Concert Hall, like our highly popular National Geographic Live speaker series. From the comfort of their seats, students travel to the far reaches of space, the depths of the ocean, or the wildest jungles through high-definition imagery and in-person presentations by renowned photographers, scientists, filmmakers, adventurers, and more. This year, we’re also proudly presenting a performance by Step Afrika!, one of the premiere dance companies in arts education in the United States, which uses styles like tap and stepping to explore history, storytelling, and cross-cultural understanding.
Go deeper into arts education through Arts Commons’ One Day, Two Day, or Five Day Wonders programs, where students receive hands-on learning from industry experts that promotes teamwork, creativity, problemsolving, and critical thinking. Try anything from costume-making to spoken word poetry to stage combat! These programs can be combined with a live performance or customized to a class’s specific needs or curriculum. The sky’s the limit!
Arts Commons is also home to the award-winning ConocoPhillips Hub for Inspired Learning, a Campus Calgary School Site. Applications for this in-demand, five-day program will reopen in February 2023.
