Our mission is to teach the wonder, spirit and worth of people and the natural world through outdoor pursuits.

t Strathcona Park Lodge & Outdoor Education Centre, we’re lucky to work with a variety of schools and groups – public and private, home schoolers and First Nations, Montessori and Francophone, musical bands and sports teams. Many return year after year; some for more than 30 years. We’ve made many great friends over that time, but it is the students who continue to motivate us.
We see them smile, laugh and learn, but it’s only through letters like this one that we really understand the longterm impact. Ellen first came in grade 6 and then returned every year from grade 8 on. Hearing what her yearly visit meant inspires us to keep doing what we do.

Other topics that we integrate include journal writing, videography, fine art, geography, archaeology, mathematics, chemistry and physics. All activities are adaptable and teachers are encouraged to advise us of specific goals and topics for their group in advance. Co-teaching with our staff is also encouraged. “You and your team provided us with an experience like no other. Two of our boys it turns out have never been overnight camping before. We spent almost the whole day debriefing – created a timeline, a word for every hour of our trip, artistic renderings of our favorite moments and acting out those epic activities. Thanks so much for giving us such a wonderful learning outdoor experience. I never thought I would hear the class raving so much and they also loved the food!” ~ Evergreen School

Grouse Mountain Grouse Mountain is not just a place that you visit. It is an immersive outdoor adventure that allows students to experience the awe-inspiring power of nature. Engaging Expert Staff Grouse Mountain’s dedicated team of educators has been welcoming students to our unique mountaintop environment for more than a decade. Our instructors are professionals with a passion for science, sustainability, First Nations, wildlife and the outdoors. Not only are they chosen for their high level of teaching expertise but they are also smart, energetic leaders who have the ability to engage students of every age and ability.
Curriculum Matching Courses All of Grouse Mountain’s education programs are linked directly to prescribed learning outcomes allowing them to fit directly into lesson plans. Our programs are developed for teachers by teachers with fresh new program content included each and every year. Days at Grouse Mountain also mirror a typical school day running from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and are suitable for all grades K to 12. Younger students will be amazed by what they’ll learn during Comparing Plants and Animals (K), Bears of North America (K-Grade 3), Staying Alive (Grade 1), Animals in Their Environment (Grade 2) and Plants Are Important Too (Grade 3). Older children will delight in Living Organisms (Grade 4), Owls of Grouse Mountain (Grades 5-8), Adaptations Among the Kingdoms (Grade 6), and Survival Within the Ecosystem (Grade 7). In keeping with the cultural component of our program, enjoy our 45-minute híwus presentation in an authentic Pacific Northwest Coast Longhouse. During this special presentation, led by an elder of the Squamish Nation, students will interactively discover the ancient customs, legends, dances and rich history of our First nation people. For students looking for an extended and compelling First Nations experience, our full-day híwus First Nations Cultural Program is also available.
Interactive Outdoor Components Each educational program we offer at Grouse Mountain contains both an interactive and an outdoor component. At the Peak of Vancouver activities range from skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating and snowshoeing in the winter to eco-walks, ranger talks, visits to the Eye of the Wind and GPS mapping tours in the summer.
Artists for Conservation Festival From September 19 to 30, 2015, Grouse Mountain will host a world-class art festival featuring a unique educational program that will connect youth with nature through art. Students will get to meet, be instructed by and interact with some of today’s leading local and international wildlife artists.

Students love the educators’ first-person interpretation style to give them the feeling that they have literally stepped back to the year 1898. Join one of the ladies in the schoolhouse or our pioneer home, where they will teach students how to wash clothes, churn butter, and make ice cream. Or visit our railway workers, where they will teach children about Canada’s railway history while helping them build a real set of railway tracks, and then take a ride on the old hand pump car. With over a dozen different programs, there is sure to be one that suits your class perfectly.

SkyTrek Adventure Park SkyTrek Adventure Park is an aerial adventure park filled with fun and exciting games within the trees. Students and their teachers can challenge themselves on the aerial trekking course or get a rush of adrenaline at the Adventure Tower. Students who choose to do the aerial trekking course will be working their way through a series of obstacles within the trees. The course has four different levels that get progressively higher and more challenging. We provide everyone with a harness, helmet, and all the necessary gear. Our experienced and enthusiastic staff will demonstrate and explain how to safely and properly move through the course on our training course. This course is close to the ground and exposes everyone to some of the obstacles they’re going to see on the course, but at a comfortable height. Once they’ve demonstrated they feel confident on the training course, it’s onto the green course. Then onto blue, black, then double black. On
the course, you’ll walk along suspension bridges and tight ropes, ride ziplines, and even snowboard between tree tops! The Adventure Tower is filled with adrenaline-pumping fun. There’s a 13-metre high simulated free fall, a giant swing, a swinging log with climbing holds, and two different climbing walls. One is animal and nature-themed, while the other is our new Indiana Jones-themed wall. The new wall features three different climbing routes that have blocks, vines, and snakes to use to climb up. It’s sure to get your heart pumping and your muscles working. The activities at SkyTrek Adventure Park encourage teamwork and inspire self-confidence. Students help motivate and encourage each other, as well as celebrate each other’s success. A lot of people are taken out of their comfort zone and exposed to something brand new. We try and make their experience as fun and as memorable as possible!
Located beside the Enchanted Forest between Revelstoke and Sicamous, SkyTrek Adventure Park is open from mid-May to Thanksgiving weekend. For more information, contact: Veronika Stevenson, Operations Manager May to October:

Academie Duello Academie Duello is the world’s largest centre for the research and practice of Historical European Swordplay and Martial Arts. The school features classes and programs on swordplay and history for youth of all ages. Kids discover the exciting world of knights and chivalry, feudalism and warfare, courtly grace and heraldry, through hands-on classes and interactive exhibits in our arms and armour discovery centre.
Our location is in Vancouver’s historic Gas Town district and is easy to get to by transit. We are close to Waterfront Station and there is ample parking in the area. Programs can be designed for your particular learning objectives and can range from short one-hour visits through our museum to two and four hour visits that include classes in swordplay, archery, and more as well as including an interactive view of many historical topics.
European swordplay and martial arts are a great vehicle for learning about history, mathematics, science, and drama. We have school groups as big as 90 students join us each year and are proud to be a place that people come back to again and again.
We also have a farm and equestrian centre in Richmond that can host larger school groups, and gives students the opportunity to interact with horses and learn about the heart of knighthood and mounted warfare.

Historic Yale
Yale, B.C. was once the largest city north of San Francisco and west of Chicago. Originally established in 1848 as a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post, Yale grew with the influx of an estimated 30,000 gold miners during the gold rush of 1858. In the 1860s, with the construction of the Cariboo Wagon Road, Yale became the main terminal for one of the largest sternwheeler routes in North America, and the 1880s saw the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway, with construction headquarters housed in Yale. At the Yale Historic Site, we will create a day suited to the ages and education levels of your students. • Visit the 1870s Creighton House Museum • Tour St. John the Divine Church built in 1863 • Dress in period costume to explore our Living History Tent City • Learn how to gold pan • Take a guided walking tour of Historic Yale • Scavenger hunts, games, crafts or float trips down the Fraser River are available

Dragon Boat BC The Dragon Zone Paddling Club believes that all kids should have the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of sport. We’ve created programs that encourage high school students to create teams through their schools and community centres. The Dragon Zone Paddling Club also provides supported programs to youth in order to remove the financial barriers that prevent them from participating in an activity that could begin a lifelong love of sport.
Junior Programs Overview Two different programs are available to school groups, community centres and youth organizations, and both include the use of all equipment (boats, paddles, personal floatation devices). a) Standard Youth team program: This program is for high school students who have already formed their team, have their coaches and sponsors, and don’t need any further development help from the Club. This program participates in the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival, held annually in June, and the Dragon Zone Junior Regatta in May. b) Supported Youth program: This program is for high school-age students who wish to organize a team but don’t have an adult sponsor or coach. The Club arranges for two trained adults to assist each team with instruction and coaching, and guide them toward self-management, teaching them important life skills such as peer communication, responsibility and organizational skills. Participation in the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Races is free of charge to these junior teams. There’s a small charge for some of the other activities, but the Club aims to keep all student costs under $60 each for a season of paddling including instruction, use of equipment, race and regatta registrations and safety and sport equipment. The 2015 price for Supported Youth Program is $1,500 plus GST.
Please email info@dragonboatbc.ca to register for these programs. b.c. school destinations directory

The 18-hole golf course was added in 2009. It is a landscaped course that meanders amongst the redwoods. It provides lots of fun for your family or school group! The Bill Reid Gallery of Norwest Coast Art is downtown Vancouver’s public gallery, named after the acclaimed Haida artist Bill Reid (1920-1998). Home to the Simon Fraser University Bill Reid Collection and the changing exhibitions of contemporary Aboriginal art of the Northwest Coast, it is centrally located at 639 Hornby Street, in the heart of the downtown Vancouver. Hop on a bus or take the skytrain (the Expo Line to Burrard Station or the Canada Line to City Centre). Highlights include Bill Reid’s gold and silver jewelry, Reid’s bronze masterpiece Mythic Messengers, several of Reid’s works featured on the Canadian Journey series $20 bill and a full-scale totem pole, carved by James Hart of Haida Gwaii. Tours are geared to all grades, and students are encouraged to participate in group discussions while touring the exhibition. The Gallery Shop is a source for Northwest Coast gifts, including carefully selected works of original art, finely crafted jewelry, and uniquely designed accessories and giftware. Inspired by the Gallery’s exhibitions, our featured pieces are authentic and indigenous. All purchases in the Gallery Shop support contemporary Northwest Coast artists. www.billreidgallery.ca

Get hands-on at Vancouver’s natural history museum
Pacific Museum of Earth
Beaty Biodiversity Museum
Take a tour through 4.5 billion years of Earth’s history, discover the topography of the moon and Mars using our interactive OmniGlobe, touch a real dinosaur bone, be informed about the hazards of natural disasters, gaze at dazzling mineral and gem displays, and learn about the mineralogical guts of your smartphone — all in one visit to the PME!
Feel the softness of an owl wing; observe the rainbow in the colours of beetles; and, if you are brave enough, smell 20-year-old blubber recovered from our blue whale skeleton! Explore an active research collection used by world-class biodiversity scientists.
Our outreach programs cover several topics within Processes of Science, Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth and Space Science as outlined under the BC curriculum prescribed learning outcomes. Groups can book an hourlong hands-on workshop during which students will learn how to identify minerals and rocks, how fossils are preserved, or how and why volcanoes erupt explosively (pme.ubc.ca/educationalprograms/workshops). In addition to a workshop, your group can book a guided tour of the museum’s exhibits (pme.ubc.ca/educationalprograms/ group-tours) and/or an exclusive 30-minute show and tell of our famous OmniGlobe (pme.ubc.ca/educationalprograms/ omniglobe-tours).
Best of all, check off topics within the BC curriculum including plants, evolution, adaptation, journaling, fine arts, habitats, and ecosystems. Schools can take a museum-led program or opt for a self-guided visit. Find lesson plans to use before, during, and after your visit on our Educator Resource page beatymuseum.ubc.ca/educator-resources. Spend a full day at the museum by combining a program with a range of daily activities, including documentaries, hands-on activities, and the opportunity to use the museum as an alternative class space. Field trips at the museum are cost-effective, starting at only $6 per student plus tax. The Beaty Biodiversity Museum can accommodate class sizes of 15-30 students per group.
Our programs can accommodate groups of 1 to 20 students and are extremely affordable – $80 for a group of 20 students – that’s $4 per student!
Find out more about school tours and programs at: The Pacific Museum of Earth pme.ubc.ca/educationalprograms The Beaty Biodiversity Museum beatymuseum.ubc.ca/teachers Teachers with BCCT or BC school ID can visit the museums for free to plan their trip.

Kid- AND Adult-friendly fun all year round! Looking for a school field trip that both the kids and teachers/parents will enjoy? Then get ready to strap yourself into an adrenaline ride that is a ton of fun and has an emphasis on safety! Indoor Kart Racing at TBC has been offering year-round go-kart racing since 2000 and offers a variety of options for group bookings. Whether it is a birthday party or a large group hosting an event, the options are limitless. TBC offers a wide range of facilities that makes bringing down a large group easy. This includes expandable meeting/banquet rooms, pre-/ post-race entertainment, and plenty of catering options to suit everyone’s needs. At TBC there is a very strong focus on safety! Not only will everyone have a great time, each racer will also go through on-site in-depth training. It is important that everyone has a positive experience and the most fun possible – so TBC teaches you how to race properly. This is a great way to introduce younger kids into racing safety. All drivers attend a pre-race Drivers' meeting given by TBC’s staff. They will watch a safety video, gear up in TBC’s racing suits and full face helmets before entering the track. Once inside, the staff will help each racer adjust their seat, answer any questions and then be re-briefed again on the rules of the track. The briefing covers the operations of the karts, track regulations, flag systems, safety procedures
and a few driving tips. This gets everyone pumped up and ready to go! Plus, you never have to worry about getting stuck or stopping! There are stop lights and a flag system in place to ensure even if you do stop, the whole track will slow down while a staff member gets you moving again. Safety first! As part of your group's race experience at TBC, they can offer an awards and presentation ceremony, where the winners stand on the winner’s podium for pictures. TBC can supply trophies, team t-shirts and other racing items to make this an event one everyone will remember for a long time. Indoor Kart Racing at TBC has long-standing involvement at a number of schools in the lower mainland area. Including participating in the school dance ticket program to help give kids a chance to come out and race at a great price. TBC has vast experience arranging school field trips and offers schools flexible pricing to ensure their field trip fits within the budget. Age/Height Requirements: all racers MUST be at least 11 years old and a minimum height of 58 inches. For more information on exclusive racing packages available, www.tbcir.ca or contact TBC’s sales team at (604) 232-9196 ext #3 or sales@tbcir.ca.

DISCOVER CANADA’S LARGEST PORT Last year Port Metro Vancouver launched a new school program specifically designed to support your grade 4 to 6 students’ prescribed learning outcomes, as outlined by the B.C. Ministry of Education. Students learn about Canada’s largest and most diversified port through activities such as: • Map Puzzle – How large is our port? Students assemble a map puzzle of Canada’s largest port, and explore familiar landmarks, alongside new ones, in relation to your school.
• Enviro Quiz – Students discover what makes Port Metro Vancouver a sustainable port, while thinking critically about their own environmental stewardship during this fun, object-based guessing game.
• Cargo Relay – Students work together as terminal operators and try their hand at loading various cargo types in this ‘get up and go’ activity.
• Import Story – Students learn how far oranges travel, and how many jobs are connected with our port, while wearing costumes and reading scripts in the ‘journey of an orange.’
See what teachers have been saying about our new free program: “I was impressed with the quality of hands-on materials and fun, interactive activities. I have already recommended the program to colleagues.” “I appreciated receiving the teacher guide as it allowed me to prepare my students for the presentation and do some follow up activities afterwards.” “It was a great way to launch our Natural Resources unit.” Book this free school program at: 604-665-9038 or education@portmetrovancouver.com

FLYOVER CANADA
F
lyOver Canada is an exciting new attraction located at Canada Place in the heart of downtown Vancouver. It incorporates state-of-the-art technology to bring you some of Canada’s most thrilling sights like you have never seen them before. You will hang suspended, feet dangling, immersed in a huge 20-metre spherical screen while you are taken on a thrilling journey from east to west across Canada. FlyOver Canada’s film production team spent over a year travelling from coast to coast capturing some of Canada’s most spectacular locations. Special effects like wind, mist and scents combine with the ride movement to create an incredible experience.
Dip into deep valleys where wild rivers rush by. Feel the wind in your hair as you fly over magnificent prairies. Gaze at snow-capped mountains that tower over the land. Seek the thrill of urban environments that buzz from morning to night. By the end, you will find yourself in awe of this amazingly diverse country. The complete FlyOver Canada experience takes approximately 30 minutes. This includes the pre-show Uplift, pre boarding zone and the 8 minute Ultimate Flying Ride. We recommend groups to allow 4560 minutes for a visit which includes walking form the front of Canada Place to the entrance, check in of bags, ticket collection, joining the queue and the complete 30 minute FlyOver Canada experience. FlyOver Canada’s location and the relatively short time commitment required make it a perfect activity for a downtown class outing. It can be easily combined with a trip to Port Metro Vancouver, the Art Gallery (a short walk away), or Science World (via Skytrain). See Canada like never before at the Vancouver’s thrilling new attraction FlyOver Canada! Already a big hit with visitors and locals, it will not only amaze your class but will provide interesting talking points for lessons on subjects as diverse as geography, technology and entrepreneurship. Combine FlyOver Canada with a trip to Port Metro Vancouver, Telus World of Science or the Vancouver Aquarium for a truly memorable class outing. Every group is welcomed by Sun Peaks’ pleasant and knowledgeable group sales team who is happy to assist from the moment of inquiry to the very last run of the day. UBC Botanical Garden UBC Botanical Garden offers an ideal outdoor learning environment with over 35 hectares to explore. The garden hosts a large botanical collection of plants arranged in diverse garden areas. If you have a food garden at your school, you might enjoy the demonstration food and physic garden full of medicinal plants. There are beehives, Asian glades and a canopy walkway perched high in the trees in the Pacific Northwest rainforest. There are 10 distinct garden areas to explore, including a cactus collection, an alpine area and a Garry Oak ecosystem. Groups ranging from preschool to Grade 12 are able to meet curriculum related requirements and enhance classroom learning. The Garden provides endless opportunities to engage students in learning about life sciences, sustainability and human interaction with plants. The 8,000 taxonomies of plant species represented here form an active research collection that is internationally respected. Included in the Botanical Garden is the Greenheart Canopy Walkway, a 308-metre aerial trail system where students can enjoy the treetop view in the rainforest surrounded by Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir trees. It is a thrilling adventure and often a highlight for students, especially those from urban environments. Nearby, the Nitobe Memorial Garden is an authentic Japanese garden where students can experience a symbolic human journey through life and time. This is a good option for students of landscape design, botany, art or Asian studies.
UBC Botanical Garden, a large natural reserve on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, is part of a leading university and situated within an urban setting. Situated in a temperate rainforest climate, UBC Botanical Garden features plant species from all over the world, including Australia, South Africa, Asia and Europe. Get your students engaged and active with outdoor curriculum-connected education at UBC Botanical Garden! The Garden educators offer tours and activities that expand student awareness and understanding of our natural world. Tour content can be adjusted to dovetail indoor learning curriculum with outdoor experiences. You can choose to visit on your own or book a Garden and/ or Canopy Guide for your class. Visits are one hour in length for each and most school groups book a two-hour stay with both experiences. A teachers or adult chaperones attends free for every eight students, and parking is free for a threehour visit. Teachers can request a garden tour online, noting specific aspects of their particular classroom studies. Join the Garden’s Educator Mailing List to be be among the first to learn about new pilot projects, classroom resources, field trip programs, and feedback opportunities. A CULTURAL JOURNEY TO THE SQUAMISH LÍL’ WAT CULTURAL CENTRE WHISTLER, BRITISH COLUMBIA
CUSTOMIZING FIELD TRIPS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS My name is David Baker. I am a tour guide at the Squamish Líl’wat Cultural Centre, and have had the opportunity to lead many students through the facility. When school groups visit, our centre comes alive. We always have the students participate in traditional dancing and singing as an icebreaker activity; we want the students to feel comfortable and welcome so that they can ask us questions they may have about our culture. My favourite tour was for a school group learning about traditional art. We work closely with the teachers to understand projects students are working on and we focus our tours based on those learning goals. We created a pre- and post-visit program for the class. Prior to their tour they researched First Nation’s traditional art designs, during their visit we also taught them to them to sing and drum. Our tour focused on the art throughout the museum and they learned how drums were traditionally made by making their own mini-drum. Back in the classroom, they were able to bring their drums to art class to paint traditional First Nation symbols. That day I left work knowing the students had a better understanding of the local First Nations culture and appreciation for Squamish and Líl’wat Nations.

Stubbs Island The Johnstone Strait, Blackfish Sound and the Broughton Archipelago are home to a bounty of nature’s magnificence, including orcas (killer whales), humpback whales, Steller sea lions, dolphins, porpoises, bald eagles and so much more. Every trip from our base in Telegraph Cove or Campbell River on Vancouver Island is an adventure of a lifetime.
Exposure to the life of the “Emerald Sea” will allow students to acquire in-depth knowledge of the marine ecosystem and develop an understanding of the need for conservation. The MV Lukwa, with ample space both on deck and inside, is ideal for school groups.
Once you board our custom-built whale-watching boats, we will guide you through the passages and around the islands that are teeming with wildlife in one of the most beautiful locations on British Columbia’s coast.
• A slide presentation illustrating the diversity and classification of marine life
School program includes:
• Service of a highly experienced biology teacher • Tour of marine mammal artifacts
It’s Whale School for Kids! Experiential education at its best Students are outside learning from nature, facilitated by an on-board biologist and/or certified teacher.* Whale School tours are aimed at increasing interest, connection and positive action for marine mammals as ambassadors for our life-sustaining seas. Please see this link for information about the comfort and safety of our vessels http://www.stubbs-island.com/our-boats. For the calibre of our crew please see http://www.stubbs-island.com/crew. Whale School tours are available from both Campbell River and Telegraph Cove. Trips at any time of the year offer good opportunities for wildlife sightings. It appears not to be common knowledge that trips early in the school year (from September to early November) are the ideal in terms of diversity of species. It is very common to see orcas, humpback whales, Steller sea lions, Dall’s porpoises, Pacific white-sided dolphins and harbour seals at this time of the year. *When possible, school tours are conducted by our Education and Conservation Advisor who is a certified biology teacher and award-winning marine educator.
• Interpretative information of all life and historic sites seen • Acoustic samples of various cetaceans Program can be enhanced to include: • More detailed cultural information • A tide pool walk • Information directed specifically at classification of invertebrates • Multiple day activities, potentially with lodging in Telegraph Cove, also available.
“Beneath the Surface” – Program, Advanced Educational Tours (Post-Secondary) The Advanced Education Programs are tailor-made for post-secondary groups to provide field experience for classes in classification, ethology, environmental science and tourism. The research that has been conducted in the area attests to its being an ideal location to study marine organisms. The biodiversity of the area, indeed, makes it a marine wonderland. Stubbs Island Whale Watching is able to provide the ethics and expertise essential to the quality demanded for post-secondary purposes.
Beneath the Surface – School Tour Program
Our experiences over the past quarter century allow us to develop custom tours.
School tours are conducted by our highly experienced educator and biologist to provide age-appropriate marine education from a full ecosystem perspective.

U’mista Cultural Centre U’mista’s Potlatch Collection tells an epic story of resistance and resilience. The Centre opened in 1980 to house repatriated Kwakwaka’wakw ceremonial regalia that had been seized by government authorities in 1922. One of the most complete and important collections of its type in the world, U’mista’s Potlatch Collection is a source of great joy and pride for the Kwakwaka’wakw community. U’mista welcomes all class visits. Educational tours at U’mista are FREE to all regional teachers, and there is no admission charge for Kwakwaka’wakw students. We are happy to host a fun day or develop a custom learning session that supports your curriculum.
