YMCA Camp Elphinstone offers the best of the great outdoors
W
ith fresh air, open skies and a diverse ecosystem, the Pacific Northwest is an ideal environment for exploration and discovery. That’s why the YMCA transforms their summer overnight camp, YMCA Camp Elphinstone, to an outdoor learning haven for children and youth during the school year. Located on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of B.C., two kilometres north of the Langdale ferry terminal and just a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, YMCA Camp Elphinstone boasts more than 140 acres of oceanfront property, lush rainforest and quiet creeks. It’s no wonder they’ve been providing unique outdoor experiences to kids since 1907. Their outdoor education programs are designed to get kids active and learning outside. Through meaningful, experiential learning, YMCA staff facilitate a wide variety of hands-on activities and students are challenged outside the traditional classroom. Programming is carefully planned to provide quality learning opportunities and is designed to meet provincial prescribed learning outcomes. Y staff work with educators to ensure that programming is developmentally appropriate and schedules are planned to achieve group goals. Some examples of the most popular types of programming, favoured by educators, include: marine beach study, discovery hike or voyageur canoeing. And of course, kids can’t get enough of their climbing wall, archery ranges, and camp fires!
Y staff are also able to play a hands-off role should educators wish to take the lead in facilitating learning experiences (certain activities require Y staff due to safety). The Y boasts an impressive staff team, with highly trained leaders, with expertise in areas such as wildlife safety and healthy child development. YMCA Camp Elphinstone is able to accommodate up to 450 participants and offers two types of accommodation—lodges and cabins—all of which offer electricity and heat. Lodges feature private washrooms, cozy lounges, mini kitchenettes and lockers to secure belongings. Cabins have washrooms and showers nearby in a separate building. The Y makes sure kids are full of healthy and nutritious meals during their stay, serving appetizing, kid-friendly meals served family or buffet style. Participants can expect meals such as pancakes or scrambled eggs and hash browns for breakfast, macaroni and cheese or tacos for lunch, and chicken and potatoes or stir-fry for dinner. Meals also include endless salad bars at lunch and dinner or cereal and fruit bars at breakfast. They are able to accommodate most dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, lactose or gluten intolerant, diabetic and celiac at no additional cost. Single meals are available for day-use only groups. Prices range depending on the type of accommodation and time of year—low season rates are offered November through April. Since the YMCA is a charity, they also offer financial assistance made possible through fundraising efforts in the community, to ensure that all kids get a chance to experience learning in the great outdoors. They also have a slew of recommendations on ways for groups to fundraise their trip. Spaces book quickly, so inquire early to secure dates and get a customized quote. To learn more, contact 604-886-2025, elphinstone@gv.ymca.ca or visit their website (gv.ymca.ca/ elphinstone).

The instructor smiles. “It’s a claw!” she proclaims. The students smile back. A few nudge their friends as if to say, ‘I told you so!’ “Does anyone want to touch it?” the instructor asks. All hands shoot into the air without hesitation. At the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, education programs and fieldtrips are more than just a lecture on dinosaurs. Students from kindergarten to grade 12 will discover prehistoric life hands-on, both in the bright, engaging classrooms, and out in the galleries. They will learn about the animals that lived millions of years in the past and how they continue to influence the present. But perhaps best of all, they will come away with a renewed energy for discovery, eager to show off what they learned and hungry to learn more! Education programs compliment curriculum requirements for each grade, include access to the galleries, and start as low as $6 per student, with options to include hot lunches, scavenger hunts, a film in the Akyroyd Family Theatre, and more! Book early to guarantee your fieldtrip!

Hyak River Rafting
F
or us at Hyak Wilderness Adventures, outdoor education is a fundamental part of our company values. We believe we are responsible for getting youth involved with the natural environment and especially with our rivers. Our rafting expeditions are the perfect opportunity to teach and learn about geography, history, and the state of the environment we live in today. Using the Thompson River Valley as our classroom, we get students involved with their eco-system, in a fun and safe environment. Our school rafting trips are an unforgettable experience; we provide a life-changing experience for teachers and their students. For many, it’s their first time camping under the stars and joking around the camp fire. We offer a full-day trip or a two-day rafting trip with camping. We provide all meals, camping equipment and transport. Fantasy Island is our private and isolated camp, located in the middle of the river surrounded by beautiful Canadian wilderness. Rafting requires teamwork to achieve objectives, so students work together while floating down the river and setting up the camp. It is a hands-on experience where everyone participates, helps and discovers their wild side.
Every adventure is unique with Hyak. We use paddle rafts or power rafts to accommodate groups from 10 years of age. All our school trips are private; we customize the trip to meet the school’s needs. It works wonderfully at the beginning of the school year (September) to integrate everyone for the upcoming year or at the end of the year as a closing activity to celebrate with an activity to remember. Seycove High School from Deep Cove has celebrated their high school graduation with us for over ten years. After their graduation, they join our team on the river to carry on celebrating and living an unforgettable moment among friends, teachers, and parents. Since 1980, Hyak Wilderness Adventures has been committed to offering B.C.’s finest rafting experience. Over 250,000 rafters from all over the world have enjoyed our first-class river rafting trips. If you want more than just an adventure for your students, our environmental awareness rafting trips make sense. Let us make a positive impact on society while making the minimum impact on the environment. For more information on school specials, contact us at www.hyak.com or call 1.800.663.7238.
info@hyak.com | 604 734 8622 www.hyak.com If you’re looking for a perfect weekend of camping and rafting, Hyak’s Fantasy Island trip definitely packs a solid punch! I brought a group of 60 students on the trip, and everyone had the time of their lives! Their staff was really friendly and they really took good care of everything, packing up equipment, helping with tents, and even cooking up fantastic meals for everyone. The camping, rafting, and just the overall experience was so great that now everybody keeps asking when the next trip is going to be!” – Matt Napier - Events Manager at VGC International College

A UNIQUE AND MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE FOR ALL AGES!
DR. SUN YAT-SEN CLASSICAL CHINESE GARDEN
A classical Chinese garden is as unique as a thumbprint and its own work of art. The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, the first of its kind outside of China, is an inspiring example of two cultures coming together to create a window into a traditional world containing lessons relevant to today. A magical place filled with stories of ancient people and mythical animals, the Garden is a piece of nature perfect for multi-sensory learning. Our school programs make for fun and engaging field trips for students of all ages and are also designed to meet the learning
outcomes of the BC provincial curriculum. Program topics include life in Ming Dynasty China (1368-1644), immigration to BC, science and inventions, festivals and holidays, philosophy and symbolic creatures. Try making “Chinese fire arrows with your students, add on our historic Chinatown Walking Tour, or a tai chi lesson to any program. This Ming Dynasty style classical Chinese garden is a living museum, a community gathering place, an art gallery, and a classroom.

Academie Duello Academie Duello is the world’s largest centre for the research and practice of historical European swordplay and martial arts – a great vehicle for learning about history, mathematics, science, and drama. The school features classes and programs on swordplay and history for youth of all ages. Kids discover the exciting world of knights and chivalry, feudalism and warfare, courtly grace and heraldry through hands-on classes and interactive exhibits in our arms and armour discovery centre. We have school groups as big as 90 students join us each year, and we’re proud to be a place that people come back to again and again. Our location is in Vancouver’s historic Gastown district and is easy to get to by transit. We are close to Waterfront Station, and there is ample parking in the area. Programs can be designed for your particular learning objectives and can range from short one-hour visits through our museum to two- and four-hour visits that include classes in swordplay and archery, as well as including an interactive view of many historical topics. We also have a farm and equestrian centre in Richmond that can host larger school groups and gives students the opportunity to interact with horses and learn about the heart of knighthood and mounted warfare.

In 1997 David and Linda Penn took over the Bear Creek Park Train & Mini-golf facility. It is a privately owned business run by Linda Penn. The trains were brought over from England and the city of Surrey agreed to let them run the train in Bear Creek Park. David had a passion for the train and for the children. He designed the special events to delight the children, and he loved doing it until his death in 2012. The 18-hole golf course was added in 2009. It is a landscaped course that meanders amongst the redwoods. It provides lots of fun for your family or school group!

The
Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest
Coast Art
is named after the acclaimed Haida artist Bill Reid (1920 – 1998) and is the only public gallery in Canada devoted to contemporary Indigenous Art of the Northwest Coast. Nestled in the heart of Downtown Vancouver, the Gallery can easily be accessed via transit and is close to Burrard and City Centre Sky Train stations. Through storytelling and inquiry based learning, students will develop a sense of their place in the world, and an understanding of how ancient knowledge can inform and impact their lives today. The transformative power of cultural treasures and Indigenous knowledge will engage students to cultivate a greater awareness of the interconnectedness of all things. Once nicknamed the “Monster Cannery” for being the largest of its kind, the historic cannery is built on wood pilings over the Fraser River, allowing visitors to ‘experience the history’ of Canada’s west coast fishing industry where it once flourished over 100 years ago. The Cannery’s school programs explore the social, political, and natural history of BC’s fishing industry, and the effects of changes in technology. The history of the Pacific Museum of Earth spans nearly 100 years. Founded in 1925 and originally named the Geological Museum and later the M.Y. Williams Geology Museum, the PME was UBC’s first museum. Over the next several decades, the museum acquired valuable minerals, gems, and fossils, slowly expanding its collection. The PME’s newest exhibits showcase the wonders of our dynamic planet Earth. You can tour 4.5 billion years through the evolution of Earth, discover the topography of the moon using our interactive OmniGlobe, touch a real dinosaur bone, be informed about the hazards of natural disasters, gaze at dazzling mineral and gem displays, and learn about the mineralogical guts of your smartphone. The museum’s Outreach team runs approximately 120 programs annually. The outreach menu currently includes guided tours of the museum and OmniGlobe, as well as hands-on workshops in which students can learn how to identify minerals and rocks, how fossils are preserved, or how and why volcanoes erupt explosively.

Museum &Archives
New Westminster’s Museums & Archives are managed across three City locations: Anvil Centre, Irving House and the Samson V Maritime Museum. The operations care for over 36,000 objects and another 35,000 photographs and archival records that celebrate our city’s stories and history. Our exhibits focus on the land, people, development and aspirations of the place now known as New Westminster. We aim to be fun and entertaining places of learning and use the museum’s collections as an entry-point to inquiry, discussion, and exploration about the City.
Our school programs and tours have been designed to be hands on, engaging and inspirational for students of all ages. They are presented by trained staff and docents in Anvil Centre, Irving House, at the Samson V Paddlewheeler or in your classroom. All programs have been updated to support the Core Competency and Big Idea themes of the recently renewed BC Curriculum.

DISCOVER CANADA’S LARGEST PORT The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s school program helps students build awareness about the port, the role it plays, and how it connects to their everyday life. The program offers a memorable, interactive and fun learning and field trip experience. Students learn about Canada’s largest and most diversified port through activities such as: • Map Puzzle – How large is our port? Students assemble a map puzzle of Canada’s largest port, and explore familiar landmarks, alongside new ones, in relation to your school. • Cargo Relay – Students work together as terminal operators and try their hand at loading various cargo types in this ‘get up and go’ activity. • Enviro Quiz – Students discover what makes the Port of Vancouver a sustainable port, while thinking critically about their own environmental stewardship during this fun, object-based guessing game. • Import Story – Students learn how far oranges travel, and how many jobs are connected with our port, while wearing costumes and reading scripts in the ‘journey of an orange.’ • Scavenger Hunt – Students learn more about the port as they search for answers on our interactive touch screen benches. See what teachers have been saying about our program: “I was impressed with the quality of hands-on materials and fun, interactive activities. I have already recommended the program to colleagues.” “The presentation was extremely well run: excellent pacing, interactive, informative, and very engaging.” “I was so impressed with this program. Been teaching 25 years and I have to say it was one of the most organized, clearly laid out and interesting field trips I've been on.” Book this free school program at: 604-665-9038 or education@portvancouver.com

Kid- AND Adult-friendly fun all year round! Looking for a school field trip that both the kids and teachers/parents will enjoy? Then get ready to strap yourself into an adrenaline ride that is a ton of fun and has an emphasis on safety! Indoor Kart Racing at TBC has been offering year-round go-kart racing since 2000 and offers a variety of options for group bookings. Whether it is a birthday party or a large group hosting an event, the options are limitless. TBC offers a wide range of facilities that makes bringing down a large group easy. This includes expandable meeting/banquet rooms, pre-/ post-race entertainment, and plenty of catering options to suit everyone’s needs. At TBC there is a very strong focus on safety! Not only will everyone have a great time, each racer will also go through on-site in-depth training. It is important that everyone has a positive experience and the most fun possible – so TBC teaches you how to race properly. This is a great way to introduce younger kids into racing safety. All drivers attend a pre-race Drivers' meeting given by TBC’s staff. They will watch a safety video, gear up in TBC’s racing suits and full face helmets before entering the track. Once inside, the staff will help each racer adjust their seat, answer any questions and then be re-briefed again on the rules of the track. The briefing covers the operations of the karts, track regulations, flag systems, safety procedures
and a few driving tips. This gets everyone pumped up and ready to go! Plus, you never have to worry about getting stuck or stopping! There are stop lights and a flag system in place to ensure even if you do stop, the whole track will slow down while a staff member gets you moving again. Safety first! As part of your group's race experience at TBC, they can offer an awards and presentation ceremony, where the winners stand on the winner’s podium for pictures. TBC can supply trophies, team t-shirts and other racing items to make this an event one everyone will remember for a long time. Indoor Kart Racing at TBC has long-standing involvement at a number of schools in the lower mainland area. Including participating in the school dance ticket program to help give kids a chance to come out and race at a great price. TBC has vast experience arranging school field trips and offers schools flexible pricing to ensure their field trip fits within the budget. Age/Height Requirements: all racers MUST be at least 11 years old and a minimum height of 58 inches. For more information on exclusive racing packages available, www.tbcir.ca or contact TBC’s sales team at (604) 232-9196 ext #3 or sales@tbcir.ca.

Cheakamus Centre programs provide excellence in learning, inspired by nature, and are designed to support the revised BC Curriculum. Our 165-hectare ecological reserve offers fun, memorable, outdoor learning experiences for educators and students alike. Field School Program: Immerse your students in hands-on educational experiences designed around our five guiding principles of Place, Inquiry, Community, Personal Connections and First Peoples’ Perspectives. Learning takes place in our extensive network of trails, ancient forests, spawning channels, ponds, salmon hatchery, and working farm. This overnight program engages learners in fun and meaningful ways to foster understanding and care for our natural world. One Day Cultural Program: Enhance your students’ understanding and respect for First Nations culture in our authentic Coast Salish Bighouse. This immersive day program in the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) territory combines traditional activities like cedar-bark weaving, native plant collecting and wood working with First Peoples’ Principles of Learning.

WALKING TOURS IN VICTORIA For 18 years, John Adams, his son Chris and their team of expert guides have helped hundreds of teachers make trips to Victoria superb and memorable for their classes. They offer walking tours throughout the year and can fit into the tightest schedules. Their history tours on a wide range of themes, but Chinatown tours (including a specialty tour about the novel White Jade Tiger) and their Ghostly Walks are the most popular. They can custom design a tour to suit any curriculum. Send John an email at john@discoverthepast.com or call him at 250.384.6698 to start planning your next trip to the capital.
TAKE THEM TO THE PRE-TEXTING ERA. Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria is a perfect place for a school field trip to engage curiosity about an unplugged and fascinating era. As a National Historic site that showcases Victorian-era grandeur and the life and times of a coal baron’s family, Craigdarroch is an immersive educational experience that will get young minds thinking and talking. Ask us about guided tours for your group.

Ocean Networks Canada lets you explore the deep sea…
without getting wet! Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) brings engaging, curriculum-linked ocean content to the classroom and encourages students and teachers alike to explore the ocean from the coast to the deep sea through technology. ONC monitors the west and east coasts of Canada and the Arctic to continuously deliver data in real-time for scientific research, helping communities, governments, and industry make informed decisions about our future. Using cabled observatories that supply continuous power and Internet connectivity to subsea instruments, ONC enables evidencebased decision-making on ocean management, disaster mitigation, and environmental protection. All data are freely available through the website for use in your classroom.
Ocean Sense Program (Grades 6–10) Ocean Sense is a novel education program that develops skills in analysing, understanding, and sharing ocean data and knowledge. By exploring local observations and global connections, this program invites communities, educators, and students to collaborate in discovering the ocean through ONC observatories. Units contain complete lesson plans and activities that link ocean science and Indigenous knowledge.
Ocean Science Symposium (Grades 8–10) Join ONC each spring at the University of Victoria to explore the ocean through the lens of science, engineering, and place-based Indigenous knowledge. Through engagement with graduate students, scientists, and local knowledge holders, participants gain an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of the ocean and its importance to local peoples. The symposium features hands-on activities for students and professional development opportunities for teachers. Ship2Shore Program (all grades) ONC’s Ship2Shore Ocean Educators’ Program offers classrooms the opportunity to connect live to ONC research vessels to discuss ocean science, technology, and life at sea. The program provides a unique opportunity to understand the importance of our ocean, gain insight into current oceanographic research, and incorporate ocean science into the classroom. When space allows, educators may participate in ONC’s at-sea expeditions to work alongside scientists, engineers, and technicians, documenting and sharing their experience of a lifetime!
Classroom Visits (all grades) ONC regularly visits communities and classrooms on southern Vancouver Island, in the Prince Rupert region, Campbell River, Bamfield, and Port Alberni (currently instrumented areas). Contact learning@oceannetworks.ca to inquire about a visit to your classroom!

U’mista Cultural Centre U’mista’s Potlatch Collection tells an epic story of resistance and resilience. The Centre opened in 1980 to house repatriated Kwakwaka’wakw ceremonial regalia that had been seized by government authorities in 1922. One of the most complete and important collections of its type in the world, U’mista’s Potlatch Collection is a source of great joy and pride for the Kwakwaka’wakw community. U’mista welcomes all class visits. Educational tours at U’mista are FREE to all regional teachers, and there is no admission charge for Kwakwaka’wakw students.
