YMCA Camp Elphinstone offers the best of the great outdoors
W
ith fresh air, open skies and a diverse ecosystem, the Pacific Northwest is an ideal environment for exploration and discovery. That’s why the YMCA transforms their summer overnight camp, YMCA Camp Elphinstone, to an outdoor learning haven for children and youth during the school year. Located on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of B.C., two kilometres north of the Langdale ferry terminal and just a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, YMCA Camp Elphinstone boasts more than 140 acres of oceanfront property, lush rainforest and quiet creeks. It’s no wonder they’ve been providing unique outdoor experiences to kids since 1907. Their outdoor education programs are designed to get kids active and learning outside. Through meaningful, experiential learning, YMCA staff facilitate a wide variety of hands-on activities and students are challenged outside the traditional classroom. Programming is carefully planned to provide quality learning opportunities and is designed to meet provincial prescribed learning outcomes. Y staff work with educators to ensure that programming is developmentally appropriate and schedules are planned to achieve group goals. Some examples of the most popular types of programming, favoured by educators, include: marine beach study, discovery hike or voyageur canoeing. And of course, kids can’t get enough of their climbing wall, archery ranges, and camp fires!
Y staff are also able to play a hands-off role should educators wish to take the lead in facilitating learning experiences (certain activities require Y staff due to safety). The Y boasts an impressive staff team, with highly trained leaders, with expertise in areas such as wildlife safety and healthy child development. YMCA Camp Elphinstone is able to accommodate up to 450 participants and offers two types of accommodation—lodges and cabins—all of which offer electricity and heat. Lodges feature private washrooms, cozy lounges, mini kitchenettes and lockers to secure belongings. Cabins have washrooms and showers nearby in a separate building. The Y makes sure kids are full of healthy and nutritious meals during their stay, serving appetizing, kid-friendly meals served family or buffet style. Participants can expect meals such as pancakes or scrambled eggs and hash browns for breakfast, macaroni and cheese or tacos for lunch, and chicken and potatoes or stir-fry for dinner. Meals also include endless salad bars at lunch and dinner or cereal and fruit bars at breakfast. They are able to accommodate most dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, lactose or gluten intolerant, diabetic and celiac at no additional cost. Single meals are available for day-use only groups. Prices range depending on the type of accommodation and time of year—low season rates are offered November through April. Since the YMCA is a charity, they also offer financial assistance made possible through fundraising efforts in the community, to ensure that all kids get a chance to experience learning in the great outdoors. They also have a slew of recommendations on ways for groups to fundraise their trip. Spaces book quickly, so inquire early to secure dates and get a customized quote. You must be able to reach up to 5’6” to participate. Throughout the course, students and teachers will be encouraged to use their problem solving skills and build self-confidence by overcoming obstacles and flying across ziplines. The awesome Adventure Tower offers an array of thrilling activities including our 50 foot giant swing that sends you soaring through the trees, a 40 foot simulated free fall to test the toughest of nerves and two interactive climbing walls that offer five different routes in a range of difficulties. We also offer the Kids Sky Adventure, a mini version of our Sky Course to challenge littler kids starting at the age of 5. Hyak River Rafting
F
or us at Hyak Wilderness Adventures, outdoor education is a fundamental part of our company values. We believe we are responsible for getting youth involved with the natural environment and especially with our rivers. Our rafting expeditions are the perfect opportunity to teach and learn about geography, history, and the state of the environment we live in today. Using the Thompson River Valley as our classroom, we get students involved with their ecosystem, in a fun and safe environment.
and setting up the camp. It is a hands-on experience where everyone participates, helps and discovers their wild side. Every adventure is unique with Hyak. We use paddle rafts or power rafts to accommodate groups from 10 years of age. All our school trips are private; we customize the trip to meet the school’s needs. It works wonderfully at the beginning of the school year (September) to integrate everyone for the upcoming year or at the end of the year as a closing activity to celebrate with an activity to remember.
Our school rafting trips are an unforgettable experience; we provide a life-changing experience for teachers and their students. For many, it’s their first time camping under the stars and joking around the camp fire.
Since 1980, Hyak Wilderness Adventures has been committed to offering B.C.’s finest rafting experience. Over 250,000 rafters from all over the world have enjoyed our first-class river rafting trips.
We offer full day trips and two day floating or rafting with camping. We provide all meals, camping equipment and transport. Fantasy Island is our private and isolated camp, located in the middle of the river surrounded by beautiful Canadian wilderness. Rafting requires teamwork to achieve objectives, so students work together while floating down the river

info@hyak.com | 604 734 8622 www.hyak.com If you’re looking for a perfect weekend of camping and rafting, Hyak’s Fantasy Island trip definitely packs a solid punch! I brought a group of 60 students on the trip, and everyone had the time of their lives! Their staff was really friendly and they really took good care of everything, packing up equipment, helping with tents, and even cooking up fantastic meals for everyone. The camping, rafting, and just the overall experience was so great that now everybody keeps asking when the next trip is going to be!” – Matt Napier - Events Manager at VGC International College

Academie Duello Academie Duello is the world’s largest centre for the research and practice of historical European swordplay and martial arts – a great vehicle for learning about history, mathematics, science, and drama. The school features classes and programs on swordplay and history for youth of all ages. Kids discover the exciting world of knights and chivalry, feudalism and warfare, courtly grace and heraldry through hands-on classes and interactive exhibits in our arms and armour discovery centre. We have school groups as big as 90 students join us each year, and we’re proud to be a place that people come back to again and again. Our location is in Vancouver’s historic Gastown district and is easy to get to by transit. We are close to Waterfront Station, and there is ample parking in the area. Programs can be designed for your particular learning objectives and can range from short one-hour visits through our museum to two- and four-hour visits that include classes in swordplay and archery, as well as including an interactive view of many historical topics. We also have a farm and equestrian centre in Langley that can host larger school groups and gives students the opportunity to interact with horses and learn about the heart of knighthood and mounted warfare.

VISIT UBC BEATY BIODIVERSITY MUSEUM
Take a tour through 4.5 billion years of Earth’s history, discover the topography of the moon and Mars using our interactive OmniGlobe, touch a real dinosaur bone, be informed about the hazards of natural disasters, gaze at dazzling mineral and gem displays, and learn about the mineralogical guts of your smartphone—all in one visit to the PME. Our outreach programs cover several topics within Process of Science, Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth and Space Science as outlined under the BC curriculum prescribed learning outcomes. Groups can book an hour-long hands-on workshop during which students will learn how to identify minerals and rocks, how fossils are preserved, or how and why volcanoes erupt explosively. In addition to a workshop, your group can book a guided tour of the museum’s exhibits and an exclusive 30-minute show-and-tell of our famous OmniGlobe. Our programs can accommodate groups of 1–20 students and are extremely affordable—$80 for a group of 20 students—that’s $4 per student! Find out more at: pme.ubc.ca/educationalprograms
Feel the softness of an owl wing; observe the rainbow in the colours of beetles; and, if you are brave enough, smell 20-year-old blubber recovered from our blue whale skeleton! Explore an active research collection used by world-class biodiversity scientists. Best of all, check off topics used within the BC curriculum including plants, evolution, adaptation, journaling, fine arts, habitats, and ecosystems. Schools can take a museum-led program or opt for a self-guided visit. Find lesson plans to use before, during, and after your visit on our Educator Resource Page (beatymuseum.ubc.ca/educator-resources). Spend a full day at the museum by combining a program with a range of daily activities, including documentaries, hands-on activities, and the opportunity to use the museum as an alternative class space. Field trips for the museum are cost-effective, starting at only $8 per student plus tax. The Beaty Biodiversity Museum can accommodate class sizes of 15–30 students per group. These sessions are led from start to finish by our qualified instructors, who take care of all the technical aspects of the sport, enabling the students to experience a safely managed and enjoyable climbing experience. For teachers who would prefer that their students become more involved in the technical aspects of climbing, we also offer multi-session group instruction packages. Over the course of three or more sessions, your students will learn how to use the equipment correctly, communicate by using the proper commands, tie knots appropriate to climbing, and belay each other safely. We accept morning and afternoon bookings for school groups.

Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site Built in 1894 in the historic fishing village of Steveston, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site provides a unique heritage setting for school programs. Once nicknamed the “Monster Cannery” for being the largest of its kind, the historic cannery is built on wood pilings over the Fraser River, allowing visitors to ‘experience the history’ of Canada’s west coast fishing industry where it once flourished over 100 years ago. The Cannery’s school programs explore the social, political, and natural history of BC’s fishing industry, and the effects of changes in technology. All programs are interactive, held indoors, and offered in both English and French.

DISCOVER CANADA’S LARGEST PORT The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s school program helps students build awareness about the port, the role it plays, and how it connects to their everyday life. The program offers a memorable, interactive and fun learning and field trip experience. Students learn about Canada’s largest and most diversified port through activities such as: • Map Puzzle – How large is our port? Students assemble a map puzzle of Canada’s largest port, and explore familiar landmarks, alongside new ones, in relation to your school. • Cargo Relay – Students work together as terminal operators and try their hand at loading various cargo types in this ‘get up and go’ activity. • Enviro Quiz – Students discover what makes the Port of Vancouver a sustainable port, while thinking critically about their own environmental stewardship during this fun, object-based guessing game. • Import Story – Students learn how far oranges travel, and how many jobs are connected with our port, while wearing costumes and reading scripts in the ‘journey of an orange.’ • Scavenger Hunt – Students learn more about the port as they search for answers on our interactive touch screen benches. See what teachers have been saying about our program: “I was impressed with the quality of hands-on materials and fun, interactive activities. I have already recommended the program to colleagues.” “The presentation was extremely well run: excellent pacing, interactive, informative, and very engaging.” “I was so impressed with this program. Been teaching 25 years and I have to say it was one of the most organized, clearly laid out and interesting field trips I've been on.” Book this free school program at: 604-665-9038 or education@portvancouver.com

Kid- AND Adult-friendly fun all year round! Looking for a school field trip that both the kids and teachers/parents will enjoy? Then get ready to strap yourself into an adrenaline ride that is a ton of fun and has an emphasis on safety! Indoor Kart Racing at TBC has been offering year-round go-kart racing since 2000 and offers a variety of options for group bookings. Whether it is a birthday party or a large group hosting an event, the options are limitless. TBC offers a wide range of facilities that makes bringing down a large group easy. This includes expandable meeting/banquet rooms, pre-/ post-race entertainment, and plenty of catering options to suit everyone’s needs. At TBC there is a very strong focus on safety! Not only will everyone have a great time, each racer will also go through on-site in-depth training. It is important that everyone has a positive experience and the most fun possible – so TBC teaches you how to race properly. This is a great way to introduce younger kids into racing safety. All drivers attend a pre-race Drivers' meeting given by TBC’s staff. They will watch a safety video, gear up in TBC’s racing suits and full face helmets before entering the track. Once inside, the staff will help each racer adjust their seat, answer any questions and then be re-briefed again on the rules of the track. The briefing covers the operations of the karts, track regulations, flag systems, safety procedures
and a few driving tips. This gets everyone pumped up and ready to go! Plus, you never have to worry about getting stuck or stopping! There are stop lights and a flag system in place to ensure even if you do stop, the whole track will slow down while a staff member gets you moving again. Safety first! As part of your group's race experience at TBC, they can offer an awards and presentation ceremony, where the winners stand on the winner’s podium for pictures. TBC can supply trophies, team t-shirts and other racing items to make this an event one everyone will remember for a long time. Indoor Kart Racing at TBC has long-standing involvement at a number of schools in the lower mainland area. Including participating in the school dance ticket program to help give kids a chance to come out and race at a great price. TBC has vast experience arranging school field trips and offers schools flexible pricing to ensure their field trip fits within the budget. Age/Height Requirements: all racers MUST be at least 11 years old and a minimum height of 58 inches. For more information on exclusive racing packages available, www.tbcir.ca or contact TBC’s sales team at (604) 232-9196 ext #3 or sales@tbcir.ca.

Treetop Flyers has been hosting school groups from university, high school, middle, and elementary levels for over seven years now. Our trips have proven to be confidence-building, fun, safe excursions, for groups - both large and small. Operating from May through September, it’s a summer adventure your class will be sure to remember! Start by warming up on the Coyote, our 100m dual zipline. Continue your canyon adventure with two more lines, flying over beautiful Chase Creek, and through the heart of Chase Canyon. Two awesome guides accompany each tour, sharing their cheesy jokes and unique knowledge of the local Indigenous bands, flora, fauna and history. Keep the adventure rolling with our 50’ trust fall. Step up, take a breath and lean back, gravity does the rest. Our QuickJump™ device gives the sensation of free fall, our trained guides ensure a smooth landing on solid ground. Finish off your tour with the most adrenaline inducing drop-swing in Western Canada. Our unique winch system, which runs entirely on solar power, lifts 3 guests to 100’ in the air. The only thing to decide is who pulls the ripcord? Drop, swing, scream and repeat. Trust us, one swing is never enough. Contact our team at 1-866-343-6761 or info@ treetopflyers.ca to organize your custom trip. Located at 305 Brooke Drive in Chase, BC. b.c. school destinations directory

WALKING TOURS IN VICTORIA For 18 years, John Adams, his son Chris and their team of expert guides have helped hundreds of teachers make trips to Victoria superb and memorable for their classes. They offer walking tours throughout the year and can fit into the tightest schedules. Their history tours on a wide range of themes, but Chinatown tours (including a specialty tour about the novel White Jade Tiger) and their Ghostly Walks are the most popular. They can custom design a tour to suit any curriculum. Send John an email at john@discoverthepast.com or call him at 250.384.6698 to start planning your next trip to the capital.

We can visit your classroom or community to share local details about your ocean. Ocean Networks Canada has ocean observing networks in southern Vancouver Island, Campbell River, Bamfield, Port Alberni, and Prince Rupert. All data are freely available through our website for use in your classroom.
To learn more, contact: learning@oceannetworks.ca or visit oceannetworks.ca @Ocean_Networks /OceanNetworksCanada @ocean_networks Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) monitors the west and east coasts of Canada and the Arctic to continuously deliver data in real-time for scientific research, helping communities, governments, and industry make informed decisions about our future. Using cabled observatories that supply continuous power and Internet connectivity to subsea instruments, ONC enables evidence-based decision-making on ocean management, disaster mitigation, and environmental protection.

Field Trips Our range of field trips provide grade-specific programming with personal experiences that allow your students to interact with the content and our staff in order to enhance learning. From Earth
and space science to social studies to language arts focuses, we are continually updating our programs to introduce new options for out-of-classroom learning. Packages are customizable and include hands-on workshops, live science demonstrations, Planetarium Star Theatre shows and time in the Cosmic Courtyard exhibit space.
Cosmic Courtyard
Visit our space-themed, hands-on exhibit space. Students can enjoy a range of activities like morphing themselves into aliens, touching a Moon rock, trying to lift a meteorite, and building Mars rovers.
Want Us to Come to You? PORTABLE PLANETARIUM Let us bring the universe to you! With Polaris our portable planetarium, your students will be able to stand on the Moon and look back at Earth, experience a Martian sunrise, discover what the Milky Way galaxy looks like, and explore nighttime sky constellations.
Planetarium Star Theatre
The Portable Planetarium is a large, inflatable dome, where we can host up to six classes of 30 children each for 30-minute, live Planetarium shows. Since our staff control what you see, each show is unique and customizable to your group!
GroundStation Canada Theatre
VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS Do your students have challenging questions about space science and astronomy? We have the answers! Our staff are ready to connect with your students and share their passion and knowledge through video Skype. Your virtual field trip will include a science demonstration and a Q & A session with our staff.
The star of the Space Centre! Lie back and journey through the cosmos in our 360-degree dome theatre. From extreme environments to characteristics of the Moon to the historical and cultural stories of the night sky, explore the farthest reaches of our universe in this state-of-the-art planetarium theatre.
Learn the fascinating facts and latest discoveries in astronomy. How do astronauts live in space? What are the mechanics behind rockets? How do astronomers discover planets? Find answers to all of your students’ cosmic questions with these live science demonstrations.
