Best wishes I WOULD LIKE to take this time to give my sincere best wishes to Angie Unger as she has given the association her notice and is planning to retire at the end of August. Angie will be missed from her position as the Manitoba Hairstylists’ Association (MHA) secretary/treasurer and business agent, after working for 35 years with commitment and dedication. Angie has been the one “go-to person” for many years and has looked after the structure and the day-to-day operations of the association. The executive will be at a loss and will have a lot to learn in the months ahead. We wish her well as she has served the association proudly. She now is looking forward to a new chapter in her life, one of becoming a grandma, which is very exciting! As Angie has decided to step down from her duties, I am sure she will still always have a continued presence with the MHA and we will always hold her presence with the association with high regard. Once again Angie, on behalf of all members, past and present, we want to thank you for your years of service. As for our members in the future, they will learn the true meaning of dedication and commitment when they hear of you and all that you have done for the association over the past years. On December 7, 2011 Laddie James was at Winnipeg Technical College (WTC) to talk with us about life lessons that he has learned over his career. Both new students and experienced hairstylists were in attendance, and when he was speaking we could all find things we could relate to, no matter what the age or level of experience.

The reason why we were so happy to spend some time with an accomplished artist is his extensive work within the industry. As a top designer, James has been featured in over 250 shows, featuring custom colouring, design cutting, fashion up-styles, and also science, technical, and inspirational lecturing. He has traveled extensively worldwide providing training for hundreds of thousands in the beauty industry and has over 28 years of experience and is third-generation stylist. Some of his career highlights are working on Canadian Idol, Broadway shows on tour – Mamma Mia, Hairspray, Annie, Buddy Holly, and Aladdin. He is also a four-term chair for the Provincial Trade Board Saskatchewan, a national technical expert for HRDC Canada, and a technical advisor with MC College. Thank you for all who attended and many thanks to Laddie James for his time and enthusiasm! BARBARA PARKIN by Shayna Wiwierski
A new phase in her career BARBARA PARKIN HAS been involved in the hairstyling trade her entire life. “I’m a generational hairstylist. My mom [Doreen Ness from Doreen’s Hair Fashion and Esthetic Salon in Selkirk, Manitoba] is a hairstylist and owns her own salon and still works full time.” Although Parkin still works part time as a hairstylist, most know her as the former apprenticeship training coordinator for the hairstyling trade at Apprenticeship Manitoba, a position she has held for the past 14 years until recently when she was transferred to the construction electrician trade, one of the largest apprenticeable trades in the Apprenticeship branch. A lifetime master judge, she holds a diploma with honours in Vocational Industrial Teachers Education from Red River College (RRC), and is a certified barber, a Red Seal certified hairstylist by trade, and has a degree in Education from the University of Winnipeg. She started her career in high school where she majored in hairstyling at Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School. After winning a bursary upon completion of high school, she went on to pursue the barbering program at Red River College, where, prior to 1998 hairstyling and barbering were two separate programs and trades. Parkin worked full time as a hairstylist for many years and later decided that she wanted to pursue something further in the education field. She enrolled in the Vocational www.manitobahairstylists.com
Teachers Program at RRC while still working part time, and once completed, she landed a job at Apprenticeship Manitoba as an apprenticeship training coordinator (ATC) for the hairstyling trade. “I felt that I needed a different type of challenge, but within the hairstyling field,” says Parkin. “I was still excited about the trade and loved being creative behind the chair, but I wanted more than that. I wanted more of that instructor aspect. I was looking to pursue something more educational in an instructors’ role.” Although her role has evolved throughout the years, Parkin deals with all aspects of the industry, including making sure that apprentices follow the right process to certification; invigilating exams and giving trade presentations; interacting with instructors, examiners, and recruitment of Provincial Trade Advisory members; working with government stakeholders, and much more. Because Parkin is originally from a rural town, she also felt it was important to reach out to rural and remote communities and interact with those in the industry. “I have always made it a strong point to go beyond the city limits and across the province. I have reached out to places such as; Swan River, Dauphin, Thompson, Brandon, and Norway House. Reaching out to these locations has allowed me to connect with people and understand differences and concerns which sometimes vary from the urban ones. It’s an integral part of the

apprenticeship process, if you don’t have the employers on board to hire the apprentices, it’s not going to work. There have been so many changes since hairstyling entered the Apprenticeship system in 1998 that educating people in the apprenticeship process has been beneficial to everybody.” Parkin found out on February 13, 2012 that she would be transferred over to the electrical trade and she started her new position on February 27. Although she is no longer the ATC for the hairstyling trade, she has found the overwhelming support from former apprentices, salon owners, educators, and those in the industry to be very touching. Parkin, who has no prior trade knowledge of electrical, was chosen because of her skill sets and her extensive areas of expertise, and just because she no longer represents hairstylists at Apprenticeship Manitoba, that doesn’t mean that she won’t continue to be an advocate for the trade that she has been with for her entire life.

to kill Stylist-turned-reality star Tabatha Coffey is taking the world by storm, one salon and haircut at a time by Shayna Wiwierski
TABATHA COFFEY IS a self-described bitch. “Do you know my definition for bitch? Brave, Intelligent, Tenacious, Creative, and Honest. So yes, I am a bitch and all of you should be bitches, too,” said Coffey to the sold-out crowd at last year’s Innovate Twenty Eleven show presented by Salon Centre. Coffey, the colourful personality behind the hit Bravo television show Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, is an acclaimed hairstylist, business owner, speaker, and author (she released her best-selling memoir It’s Not Really About the Hair in January 2011). Before her busy life of shooting her reality show and working at the swanky Warren-Tricomi salon on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood, Coffey was a regular girl with an unconventional upbringing. Her parents ran a transvestite strip club in Adelaide, Australia with one of the biggest mobsters in the country as a business partner. Later, her dad abandoned both herself and her mom after faking his own suicide. “Our childhood and our upbringing make us the people who we are. I think for me, [regarding] some of the things that happened and the environments in which I grew up, it’s definitely a part of where that no-holds-barred honesty comes from and it’s also part of that tough love that I have,” says Coffey, who has a year-ormore waiting list at the Warren-Tricomi salon, where her haircuts start at $250. “Having a strong mother who was very much like that; being around the nightclubs in which I grew up; having my father leave us when I was such an early age; these are the things that, at a young age, toughen you up for when you are an adult and kind of encourage you, I guess, to say what’s on your mind. your need for people and what their expectations are; but these experiences – especially growing up in the clubs – also enabled me to be very open-minded, compassionate and caring, and honest.” Coffey’s honesty made her the fan favourite on the reality television show Shear Genius where, in 2007, she competed against 11 other hairstylists for a $100,000 prize. Before her “tell it like it is” moniker on television, she worked in salons in Australia, London, the United States, and travelled the world as an international artist for Joico. She has also trained at the legendary Vidal Sassoon academy and worked as a head colourist at the Toni & Guy salon in Windsor, England. “They are the mecca. There are a million amazing hairdressers out there but because I started hairdressing so young, Vidal Sassoon was the person who we wanted to become; the person who we wanted that education, that precision, eye and structure, and all the things for which Sassoon stood. For me, it was a personal goal and dream to go there and be able to train and work; same with going to Toni & Guy.” Education, she says, is important to any hairdresser, regardless if they took a class a month ago or years ago. Her tip to stylists for both those fresh in the industry and those who have been in for generations? Never stop learning. “Hairstyling is a profession that changes; trends change, products change, new things come out, fashion changes quickly. You have to keep yourself current and up-to-date, and education is really the best way to do that.”

She also says to realize that it’s not about you; it’s about the client. “You have to take your ego out of it. It’s not about you. The decisions that I make have to be the best decisions for the client. It’s not for me to get off on doing a haircut, to colour it; it’s about the client to feel amazing about herself. And part of my job is to be able to say ‘no, that’s going to work’ and to be honest with someone. At the end of the day, it’s about taking care of that person and taking yourself out of it; this includes talking about them, not talking about yourself; taking care of them, you know, not waffling on because you had a bad day or you had a fight with your boyfriend or something.” Coffey’s “in your face” honesty often gets her compared to other reality “villains” like Gordon Ramsay and Simon Cowell, something that she takes as a compliment.
“Gordon’s a lovely guy, I’ve met him several times and he’s a really lovely guy. Look, about the similarities between Gordon and I, he’s incredibly passionate about what he does and he doesn’t mince words; and that’s why people have that comparison. Same thing with Simon; he says what he thinks and I do the same, that’s why people like to make similarities between us. It’s that honesty I guess, with Gordon especially, Gordon and I truly do share the passion for what we do. He loves restaurants and being a chef and I love hairdressers and being a hairdresser.” Coffey loves being a hairdresser so much that when asked if she could be in another industry other than that profession, she’s left speechless. “I couldn’t imagine being anything but a hairdresser, to be honest with you. It’s all I’ve ever done or wanted to do.” $

Between splitting his time between three cosmopolitan cities (New York, London, and Los Angeles) and heading up his own mobile hairstyling academy, Carney is the international artistic director for Joico Laboratories, Inc., one of the leading salon beauty brands in the world. Add to this the accolades of being one of the most influential hairstylists of our time and having received numerous awards, not to mention that even a single appointment with him has a year-plus waiting list, and it’s obvious to all that Carney is a bonafide hair legend. However, although he has achieved what most stylists only dream of, to him he’s just plain ol’ Damien.
Carney, the third-youngest of eight children, started his hair career at University College Birmingham (known then as Birmingham College of Food and Domestic Arts) in Birmingham, United Kingdom. He decided to pursue hairstyling because of his surroundings and the way that it changed people.
“I’m a very grounded and routine guy who comes from humble beginnings. I don’t see myself other than as Damien Carney. These are just things I do every day. I go with the flow. You can have all www.manitobahairstylists.com
“My sisters were hair goddesses so it was natural for me to see them get ready and cutting out Vogue patterns, making their own dresses. Hair was always around me. When I was in the barber shop, I was always fascinated when someone would sit in the chair and then a few minutes later, they looked so different. Everyone looked like they were having a great time. I wasn’t academically great; science was interesting, but calculating and reading things didn’t excite me. Hair seemed like a natural thing to do.”

Shortly after he completed school, Carney went to work with hair legend Trevor Sorbie, a visionary who created such hairstyles like The Wedge, The Chop, and The Scrunch. Sorbie mentored Carney at the ripe age of 27 and enabled him to polish his work. “He changed my world. I did some retraining and I thought I was good, but you don’t really know what’s good until you see what’s good and what’s not. He was a great mentor; he spent time and was patient with me. You are a result of your mentor and breeding and what you believe and your philosophy. My work went from being good to super-polished. It was the best investment I have ever made in my life.” Currently, Carney travels the world with Joico, educating about the brand and teaching the latest styles. He also travels to salons as part of his mobile hair academy Damien Carney London, which he spearheaded in 2006. Damien Carney London allows salons to affordably learn from its namesake; instead of the whole business flying somewhere to learn from him, Carney will fly to them and assist them any way he can. “Most academies set up where they are located. Academies are a learning environment and often when you attend one, you may have to go to a different city. Sometimes it’s not affordable, so I’ll go to people and do a one-day or two-day program and do what they want. I can work in their environment and tailor-make a program to suit them; it becomes more personable to them and cost-effective. Rather than all of them flying to one place, they can have one person flying – me. They can buy me, use me, abuse me; but the most important role is to fulfil their goal of the training’s purpose. There are all different skill sets, but they have to have a ‘light-bulb moment’ when they leave.” Creating that light-bulb moment is very important for Carney, and he cannot stress enough the value of education and to never stop learning. “The general rule of thumb for anyone with a career is to train, train, train; invest in yourself. Our industry changes quite a bit, very quickly, as cycles of fashion jump every five years, so you need to be aware of that. To rest on your laurels on one thing is a little foolish and before you know it, you’ll grow old with a technique or with your clients. A clever hairdresser will still give amazing colour but the regrowth won’t be as strong. Make more with someone’s budget. Have fun, be creative, and be open to the world around you. Timing is a crucial thing. Learn from the best and seek out the best.” $ Manitoba Hairstylists’ Association

NO ONE CAN deny that when you take care of your body whichever way you choose, a happy, healthy body is what people strive to achieve. Reflexology is a safe and effective way to stimulate the whole body without any adverse reactions. Reflexology dates back thousands of years and most cultures around the world have picked up some form of this therapy and called it their own. The body has not changed and we all have the same bones, muscles, and nerve endings. The crazy thing about this complex system is that all our bodies do not run the same. There is multitude of reasons on why we all have different reactions to external and internal stress in the body. The bottom line is that everybody's life is different and our bodies only work to the best of its ability. Reflexology is great therapy for everyone. There is no age limit to this therapy; therapists have worked on newborns to the terminally ill and everyone in between. This is an alternative approach to treating the body and all its functions as natural as possible. When you receive a reflexology session from a licensed therapist, every organ, body part, and gland will be worked on through the hands, feet, or ear. A Q&A with Melinda Vandenberg, the chair of the Provincial Hairstyling Technical Committee EVERY YEAR, STUDENTS in the skilled trades and technology sectors compete for their chance to win gold at the Skills Manitoba Competition, a competition where students participate in challenges designed to test skills required in their respective trades and technology careers. Clippings managing editor Shayna Wiwierski spoke with Melinda Vandenberg, who is the chair of the Provincial Hairstyling Technical Committee, about Skills Canada, the committee itself, and why students should compete. Shayna Wiwierski: Tell me about the Provincial Hairstyling Technical Committee, what do you do and when do you meet? Melinda Vandenberg: Every year we get together and we meet four to five times a year and develop the scopes for the contests (such as the rules, regulations, and demerits). There are three contests in the Skills Manitoba Competition – Beginners, Secondary, and Post-Secondary. We have a group of people that consists of anyone who is involved in hairstyling; so teachers, salon owners, hairstylists, etc. We also organize a training session once a year for the secondary and post-secondary level, so we get the venue, trainers, and handle the registration for that. For the day of the competition, we set up the area, mirrors, and tables, handle registration, and make sure everyone who is registered for the competition is there. We also get the judges together and make sure they are aware of where they are going, what they are doing, and what competition they are judging. SW: Why is the Skills Canada Competition important? MV: It gives students an opportunity to see what competition is. It’s very sought after because it’s a national competition. Even if a student doesn’t place, it’s good to put on a resume to say that they have the ambition and drive. They also meet people in the industry. The

competition is held at Red River College and there is quite an audience that attends. You see other people and they see you and it’s a good way to network in our community. If you do win a medal it’s an excellent way to feel good about yourself and that you accomplished something. If you win the gold it opens more doors for you and more opportunities. SW: How many people are on the Provincial Hairstyling Technical Committee and how does one get involved? MV: There are seven of us in total and we all have hairstyling backgrounds. Most of us are teachers but anyone who has a background in hairstyling can be a member of the technical committee. It’s mostly word of mouth; in September I’ll shoot an email out to all the teachers asking to be a member and who would like to stay on. I’ll also email anyone that I can think of who would want to be part of the committee, and I have asked people who aren’t teachers before. SW: What do you do at your meetings? MV: We talk about whether or not we want to change the contest at all; little things have been changed from certain years, usually it’s things that haven’t worked too well, so we say let’s change it. If there are changes, we make sure it gets done properly. We have to submit scopes to the Province and it gets put on the [Skills Manitoba] website. We also make sure everything is still relevant on how we want to do things. We also start looking at our training session and make sure that the place can hold a lot of people, we make sure our contacts are correct, and lately we have been asking for donations for a Bud, Spud, and Steak that Skills Manitoba puts on every year for the gold medal winners to fundraise their trip to the national competition. SW: Why should one join the committee? MV: It’s very organized and it’s a lot of fun. The people on the committee are there for the students and it’s a fun committee to be on because we talk about the competition and we get involved in it. All too often business owners will devote an extraordinary amount of time, effort, and money into a finished website without giving proper consideration to traffic and how to get people visiting the site. The traffic to your website is essential because those are the potential consumers and clients of your products and services. As you find more ways to grow and expand your website traffic, you increase your opportunities for new clients and sales.
Increase Your Website’s Audience Use these methods for building and growing an audience on your website. Before you begin, be sure to have set goals in mind for your audience and how they will interact with your website. A common goal is contact through a call or a form, while another more obvious one is a sale. The goals are what you can use to measure an audiences' value to your business.

Link Exchanges Linking from one site to another is the most simple of all traffic building you can do. Select websites that you have relationships with already, such as suppliers, associations, chambers of commerce, to name a few. Contact these individuals and request a link from their site to yours and back to show that you have a relationship and to help share traffic. Choose only websites that you have a relevancy with, otherwise the links look artificial and will not be used. Consider writing a blog post about a supplier or a supplier's product and contact that supplier to make them aware that you are promoting a product of theirs – chances are they will link back as a way of selfpromotion, sending you some of their traffic.
Google Places When you search Google for things like “Winnipeg hair salons”, you'll notice that Google shows you hair salons located close by in Winnipeg. These searches are occurring more frequently and provide a great opportunity to have your salon be seen by someone who doesn't know which hair salon to choose in Winnipeg. The primary way that Google ranks these businesses is by the number of reviews they have from customers and clients. A great way to generate new traffic for your

Google AdWords Ever notice the ads that appear on Google search results at the top and side of the page? Anyone can purchase those ads to drive traffic to their website. Google AdWords allows you to choose keywords that people search for and place your advertisement on the results for that search. You set the price that you are willing to pay for a click on your ad and you only pay when a click occurs. That click is traffic being sent to your website that has an alignment of the user's search

The new gel polish

polish can last for five or even six weeks on toes. Now that’s performance!
I THOUGHT I would take a walk on the wild side and talk about the new product category being created by such manufacturers as Shellac from CND, Polish Pro from NSI, and many more. The category is a hybrid – not a real gel, and not a nail polish, but somewhere in between. They apply like a polish in that you paint them on with a brush, but then you cure them in an ultra-violet light like

a conventional gel. It’s a straight-forward base coat, colour, top coat application, and it lasts longer than polish, but not as long as gel. The application is removed with a soak in acetone, whether in the salon or at home. Many claims are made as to how long the application will last and most agree that a week or so on the hands, and two weeks or so on toes is about normal. It’s been said that gel
Now so far I haven’t told you anything you don’t already know. Here’s where some confusion still exists as to what to do with this interesting new product. Some nail technicians have moved their gel clients to this category. Some polish clients have been moved to gel polish, and what have we accomplished? We must remember that this product has created a new category altogether. It fills the space between gel and regular nail polish. Remember, not all polish clients want to be bothered using acetone to remove the polish, and few gel clients want to lose the great wear ability of gel. So focus on the “category” and not on switching your clients to this great new product. Make sure you know what each client is looking for before you suggest they switch. Keep in mind, as always, it’s all about the client. Ask about the client’s lifestyle; do they spend hours on a keyboard? Do they do dishes every day? Are they gardeners? Mechanics? This all helps determine if you should suggest they move to this category. Remember that you’re the expert, and that you need to ask questions before you recommend.

Now about the new products coming soon to a distributor near you. It seems that to build in more wear, manufacturers are trying to make their product more gel-like. That sounds good, right? Well then, why not just go to a soak-off gel? Well we’ve likely been doing just fine with our clients for years with regular gel, right? So, then where should manufacturers go with this? Some of my clients have some suggestions. If gel works for you and your clients are happy with it, don’t rock the boat. Most manufacturers / distributors have deemed that you don’t have to be gel trained to use the “gel polish” products. From my point of view, you still need to know all about sanitation, how to properly file, good product application, and so on, for the best and safest result for your client. This is an ideal situation for someone doing hair services to help fill up their day profitably and add new tools to their toolbox. After all, a busy day, a happy client, and a good income are about as

Smoothers can reduce curl volume and frizziness from 30 to 100 per cent. Variants include prior chemical processes, existing hair damage, and the degree of natural genetic frizziness and curl.
