“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” –Margaret Mead (1907-1978) As I sit to write this message, I am doing so with a hopeful heart. The Manitoba Hairstylists’ Association (MHA) has been around for a very long time. From its beginnings as an association for barbers, it has grown and changed to include hairstylists, aestheticians, nail technicians and makeup artists, salon owners, and distributors. I am hopeful because I hope that you will take a moment to read and absorb what the quote above really says. The MHA committee is a small group of people. Mary, Jodi, Nicole, Cathie, and John are all full-time hairstylists, teachers, or volunteer on other committees. They all have families and children or grandchildren or hobbies that they like to enjoy.

President’s Message

CHERI PAIZEN

www.manitobahairstylists.com

What they also do is volunteer once a month for the MHA. We meet at a selected location and organize events. We think of ways to get more members to join our organization. We also plan and execute classes. We take time from our lives to help each other and fellow salon professionals in “the betterment of ourselves and their profession” (this coincidently is a quote from the MHA vision statement). Our annual general meeting is October 6, 2014 and I hope that I will see you there. I hope that I will see your hand up in the air when it comes time to volunteer for a position on this committee. It takes a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens to run this association. Without your help, who knows what this association will become. $

MHA Member Profile

Kailey Gousseau

By Shayna Wiwierski

Wise beyond her years this title, Gousseau gets to travel across Canada educating hairstylists about the products. With already a year of hairstyling under her belt and becoming involved with an international hair company, it’s hard to believe that she’s only 18. “It took my mom until she was in her late 20s to become a Level 1 educator, and I’m only 18; people can’t understand it,” she says, adding that her goal is to become a platform artist with the company.

When you meet Kailey Gousseau, her passion for hair is radiant. Gousseau is a stylist at Chatters Salon on Kenaston in Winnipeg, where she has been working since March 2013. Coming from four generations of hairstylists, it was a natural progression into the field, as her mother owns Silk FX Hair Studio in Sanford, Man., which is also Gousseau’s hometown. Aside from styling hair, she is also an educator for Farouk Systems, which manufactures CHI and BioSilk. Through

Gousseau graduated from Winnipeg Technical College in 2013 after her high school saw her talent and sponsored her to attend the school. Winnipeg Technical College also noticed that Gousseau had major talent, as she took home the Overall Student Achievement Award for Hairstyling in 2013 at the Winnipeg Technical College awards banquet. “I was shocked. I was very involved in the program but wasn’t trying to separate myself from the other girls. I don’t like being better than anyone else; I was very shocked and honoured.” Currently, Gousseau is busy with styling and Farouk, and says that her world revolves around hairstyling. “I do hair seven days a week. Even on my day’s off, I drive out to my mom’s salon and practice there too. I feel like I cut hair all day, everyday,” she says, adding that she wants to further educate herself in hair, which is one of the most important steps a stylist can do. “After hair school a lot of stylists are stuck in the mud in their ways. Further education is important, as clients will stick with you because you are always learning new trends.” As for what the future holds, the 18-year-old dreams big. “I definitely want to be a platform artist and hopefully a salon owner. I would love to own a salon with my mom. I want to open the first eco-friendly salon in Winnipeg. There’s no salon here that’s fully ammonia free.” $

MHA outstanding member of the year recipient: Nicole Unal By Shayna Wiwierski What started as a passion for travelling soon became a full-time career for hairstylist Nicole Unal. Unal, who runs a full-time business out of her home in West Kildonan (which simply goes as “Niki’s Hair Salon”), has been working in the industry since 1996. The small-town girl who grew up on a farm in Gladstone, Man., got her start working on a cruise ship as a hairstylist. “It was very fun, I travelled to 20 different countries, I even met my husband on one of the ships, he was a wine sommelier from Turkey,” she says, adding that she trained in London, England with the Queen’s hairstylist. Unal, now 39 years old with two children, ages eight and 12, then went to work for nine years at Aura hair salon in Kildonan Place mall, before opening her own salon in her house and substitute teaching at Winnipeg Technical College. Unal got the teaching bug from her mom, also an educator, and got her diploma from Red River College’s Vocational Teacher Education Program. In addition to substitute teaching, she also teaches aboriginal groups from the north. She is hoping to start her bachelor degree in education this September. “I really like helping people; to give them guidance. I want to be a positive role model. You can guide people in hairstyling, but it’s not just about the learning. It’s about teaching life lessons too,” she says. Between her busy schedule of styling hair and teaching, Unal is also the secretary on the Manitoba Skills committee for hairstyling, as well as the vice-president for the Manitoba Hairstylists’ Association (MHA). She was also awarded with the Outstanding Member of the Year award at the 2013 annual general meeting. “I was so shocked! It was so nice, I usually don’t get awards,” she says, adding that she has only been a member for two years, but loves the camaraderie of the association. “I love the ladies on the committee, we have lots of fun. It’s great to have a committee in this trade. You can feel alone sometimes doing hair, so it’s great to get to know other people also in the same business.” $ Manitoba Hairstylists’ Association

Colouring communities:

How Frontier Collegiate Institute builds confidence By Danelle Cloutier The hairstyling program at Frontier Collegiate Institute in the northern community of Cranberry Portage not only transforms the way students look, but also the way they feel. “When they come here, they’re so shy — they have hoodies over their face and they don’t want to be seen. By the time they walk out of here they’re walking straight and their hair is done all different colours,” says Glennis Valladares, hairstyling instructor.

Glennis Valladares

“A lot of these students have never been exposed to hairdressers before because they come from such remote communities,” she says. “It’s really, really important to expose them to how to do hair, how to make money, that your hygiene is very important, how to keep your hair looking good, and just bringing their inner beauty out.” Even though Valladares has been working at the high school full-time for the past three years, she’s always so touched that her students become confident by the end of the program. She particularly notices their assurance at the glamorous hair show she puts on at the end of the year, where her students style the hair, makeup, and clothes of their models. They also walk together down the runway as the audience cheers and snaps photos.

Valladares, who for three years taught the program part-time in that empty room. Now, students are learning hairstyling to industry standard — a sign that the program is only improving.

For more information about the hairstyling program at Frontier Collegiate Institute, contact principal Dodie Johnston at dodie.johnston@frontiersd.mb.ca, or 204-472-3431. $

For two years, Kyla Rajczakowski, 18, was in the hair show. “The last hair show I had two models and I glammed them right up and it’s a good time,” she says with a smile. “Glennis knows how to bring people out of their shells.” Rajczakowski is a Grade 12 student in the hairstyling program who’s gaining hours toward her apprenticeship. The hairstyling program at Frontier Collegiate Institute has just been accredited. The 30 students in the program from 25 northern communities in Manitoba can work in the industry once they complete their 1,400 hours. Now that the program is accredited, Valladares says it will give her students an even bigger boost.

Hairstyling instructor Glennis Valladares and students at Skills Manitoba.

“It’s good for the students’ selfesteem to say, well ‘hey, if I can’t go to university, I have a career. I have my career already’ because a lot of these students will not go out of their communities. They’re too shy.” Before the new hairstyling studio and classroom was built, Valladares could only teach braiding and updos. The school now hosts 14 haircutting stations, three sinks, and hooded dryers. As a result, Valladares can teach her students how to wash, cut and dry hair. “We didn’t have the water facilities so it was one big empty room with nothing but tables in there,” says Manitoba Hairstylists’ Association

Clippings Spring 2014

“They’re on stage standing there and they’re smiling from ear to ear and they’re dressed up. It makes me cry every year because these students are so shy,” she says. “When they go out there and they see all this flashy stuff, they actually dance and move and you would never see that anywhere else. To me, that’s what this is all about.”

More than just a barbershop

Hunter & Gunn is bringing vintage back to Winnipeg By Shayna Wiwierski

It may look like a hipster paradise from the outside, but Hunter & Gunn Quality Hair and Barbershop is more than just skinny jeans and plaid shirts. Located at 567 Broadway in Winnipeg’s West End area, Hunter & Gunn is a throwback to simpler times. An eclectic mix of old meets new. A vintage Dale Hawerchuk sports card nestled beside an Ondrej Pavelec bobblehead. A poster of the old Winnipeg Arena surrounded by local art, a 32-inch Panasonic flat screen, new issues of GQ, and a wellread copy of Jimmy Fallon Thank You Notes on an antique coffee table. It’s the kind of place where your 80-year-old www.manitobahairstylists.com

grandfather can bring his 16-year-old grandson for a good old-fashioned cut and shave, and both feel right at home. “We call it a barbershop, but it’s for men, women, and children,” says Jeremy Regan, 40, owner. “It has a more masculine feel to it, but it’s a shop that I wanted to design that my employees and myself feel comfortable in.” Although it’s more Chuck Berry than Beyonce, and Dwight D. Eisenhower has been long gone from office, Hunter & Gunn is filled with the kitschy stuff that makes the space comforting and unique, but still current enough to

appeal to a wider audience. There’s a flat-screen TV on the wall showing Retro Teletoon or a sport’s game, an old record player providing just the right amount of ambience, and three antique barber chairs, some even complete with built-in ashtrays. Although the space is small at 700 square feet, business has been booming. “We are hitting numbers that I thought we would hit in three to five years, and we hit it in the first six months,” says Regan, who formerly was a stylist at big salon/spa in the south end of Winnipeg.

11 Clippings Spring 2014

Want an inside look into Hunter & Gunn? Scan the QR code with your smartphone or tablet to see more of this kitschy West End salon. “And now in the year and a half it’s grown to where, in this building we are in right now, I cannot do any better. We are 99 per cent sold out, if we have an opening it’s because of a last minute cancellation. It’s amazing.” The response has been so incredible that Regan says they may be opening another location sooner rather than later. The concept of the old-school-style barbershop isn’t new. There are a handful of salons around the city that are now offering a good old-fashioned straight-razor shave, and there is even a chain of barbershops across Canada that just opened its first location in Winnipeg. Even Regan says that Hunter & Gunn was inspired by a chain in the United States, called Rudy’s Barbershops. What really sets this shop apart are a variety of factors. It could be that the prices are affordable, with haircuts set at a flat rate of $25,

shampoos five dollars, colours $45 and up, and hot shaves $30. The affordable prices (complaints about the Bombers, Jets, and the government are free), Regan says is something that he did to draw in an eclectic mix of clientele and to get back to his hairstyling roots, before he was charging “an over amount of money for doing hair”. “I still do a lot of people that I did at my old job, south-end upper-middleclass people, and they ask what kind of people come here and I say everyone from cops to criminals; everyone comes here,” he says, adding that his colours have gone down probably 30 to 40 per cent of what he was charging at his previous job. “There’s a nice community feel, a nice quiet to the place, not a lot of hubbub. There’s been times where the three people in the chair talk to each other... The clientele is eclectic based on the concept.”

A sense of community is huge to Regan, who employs five stylists and keeps his shop open seven days a week, something rare for an independent salon. He says that his team does a lot of community work (everyone who works there has to volunteer four hours a month to a non-profit of their choice) and they donate one dollar from every service and product sold to a different charity every year. The donations are done in six-month increments, and up to this point they have donated just over $25,000, not bad considering they opened on July 1, 2012. “That kind of concept really works in this neighbourhood, and that’s what grasps people to come here because right from the beginning we were extremely busy. Once word got out that we were doing stuff, it was part of our motto, and it caught on really good.” Manitoba Hairstylists’ Association

12 Clippings Spring 2014

Even the “kitschy” stuff on the walls, yeah, that’s local too. Regan says that 90 per cent of the photos on the wall they cut along are from local artists. If someone is interested in purchasing something, the staff at Hunter & Gunn will put the client in touch with the artist. The staff is another factor that Regan is proud of. He says that in the hairstyling industry, there is generally a lot of turnover; something that he hopes won’t happen in his salon. He pays his stylists very generously and encourages interaction outside of work hours, something that seems to have paid off. “Hairdressers are starting to get the word that it’s a good place to work. I’m fair, we do a lot of staff things, we hang out with each other on the weekends… we travel together; we’ve gone to take a shave class in Los Angeles, and there’s another one coming up I’m planning for spring. I’m always trying to give back to them what they have given to me, it’s good.” $

Something old and something new

Spring/summer wedding hair trends By Shayna Wiwierski

Bride: Olivia Keating Photographer: Sarah J Nalder. Hair and makeup - Nikaela Wilson & Emma Yates - Tranquil Bridal, Australia.

It’s one of the biggest days in a woman’s life – her wedding day. First there’s the location, then the dress, then all the other little details that go into making her day the best day ever. When it comes to wedding hair, it goes through trends just like anything else. The traditional wedding updo? Yeah, it’s definitely more 2002 than 2014. www.manitobahairstylists.com

“Updos are still in, but make them undone or pulled back softly,” says Justin German, Pantene Pro-V consulting stylist and co-owner of Shagg Salon in Toronto, Ont. “Make it classic with a deep side part and a chignon in the back.”

brides should look at the red carpet for inspiration. He says that texture is in for 2014 and the ponytail is huge on runways this season. Loose waves, a deep side part, and hair accessories are also hot trends for spring/summer 2014.

Justin, who is one of Canada’s top stylists, says that hairstylists and

“Do something ornate, or even jeweled headbands. Bejeweled flower clips are

17 Clippings Spring 2014

big too; a lot of runways did flowers. Just try to make sure you don’t look like a little girl. If you think you look like a little girl, you probably do, so don’t do it,” he says, adding that hair should reflect who the bride is, not something out of the ordinary.

Bride: Raelee Griffin Hair - Kira Halliday - Sandals Day Spa - Steinbach, Man. Makeup - Coralea Courtland Beauty Mark To Go. Photography - Janelle Baldwin Photography.

Not working with long locks? No problem. For brides with shorter hair, German recommends more movement and more body; just keep the hair off the face. A pixie cut is also super hot right now, but he recommends to not go too crazy with it. Jodi Newman, owner of Anarchy Studios in Winnipeg, Man., agrees that simple is more. “Lots of down, not a lot of curl, nothing overdone, and nothing flashy,” says Newman who does between five and 10 weddings between June and September. “Lots of people were doing ‘Hollywood glam’ last year, whereas this year will be more toned down compared to the last couple of years.” Newman says that when it comes to actually styling the hair, the one thing to remember is to let the bride get her way. “It’s not your wedding. Really, what you are doing is making the bride’s whole idea come together. You have to play into what she’s imagining and then put a creative spin on it and offer advice. Listen to what they want, as they have been planning this for a long time.” German’s advice for wedding hair? Make it moveable and don’t overdo it. “Just don’t make it prom hair – hair that’s too stiff – that’s definitely out.” $

Hairstylists need to be prepared when it’s finally the big day. Here are Jodi Newman’s top products for creating picture-perfect wedding hair. Schwarzkopf OSiS+ Session Finish Extreme Hold Hairspray “It keeps it all together. I’ll use two bottles of hairspray on a wedding with four people because I want it all to stay.” Schwarzkopf OSiS+ Magic Anti-Frizz Gloss Serum “It’s a smoothing serum, so it smooths all the bits and pieces down.” Schwarzkopf OSiS+ Dust It Mattifying Powder “Not only does it help with volume, but it also absorbs oils. Sometimes people are too liberal in having dirty hair for the big day.”

Stuff we are

‘Dye-ing’ over! That fresh tropical scent… the mystique of sea salt… no, we are not talking about the weather getting warmer and the fresh scents associated with spring, we are talking about the must haves for S/S 2014! From a sunkissed glow (faux of course, it’s better for your skin) to a root-lift spray that will have your locks not on lock-down, to even a magical product that will get hard-to-remove glitter polish off with one peel, we are obsessing over these products for spring.

Joico Body Luxe Root Lift Volumizing Foam A body builder in a bottle! Amp up the volume with Joico’s Body Luxe Volumizing Foam, which not only thickens and volumizes, but protects hair from heat styling. $19.99 SRP at Joico salons and distributors.

CND Open Road collection Nude lacquer was all over the runways this past year and is a hot shade for spring. CND’s Open Road collection, available for both Shellac and the VINYLUX Weekly Polish System, has all our favourite seasonal colours like greens, poppy, yellow, and yes, nude. Plus, the long-wear on these is perfect for any road trip. Available from Salon Centre, $19.95/bottle SRP.

Make Up For Ever HD Pressed Powder The Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder is one our faves, so when we saw that they came out with a pressed powder format, we were like “stop the presses!”. This white translucent powder, perfect for any skin tone, acts as a finishing powder that blurs imperfections, adds a soft focus, and reduces shine. This is a must for any makeup artists’ kit! $41/0.21 oz. at Sephora.

Fake Bake Flawless Self-Tan Liquid Fake it ‘til you make it! Spray this fab tanner into the included glove and work it into your body for a bronze, naturallooking tan that appears instantly. Best of all, it doesn’t leave you with that dreaded self-tan smell. Instead, your skin smells, and looks like you just got back from a tropical vacation. $24.99, available through Passion Beauty Supply.

OPI Glitter Off Kenneth Bernard Thermal Protection You wouldn’t take a pan out of the oven without wearing an oven mitt, so why would you subject your hair to heat without some protection? This Chatters-exclusive line provides advanced heat protection leaving your locks looking silky and shiny. $18.95 at Chatters salons.

As much as we love glitter polish, we hate the removal process even more. So imagine our excitement when we found out about OPI’s Glitter Off peel-able base coat. Students pay less for the full package at WTC! If any one industry fully understands the importance of making a good first impression, it’s hairstyling. Whether it’s for a job interview, a meeting with a potential client, asking your boss for a raise, going on a first date, or even those last few unforgettable steps down the aisle, we don’t just want to look our best, we want others to see who we are and why we should be the focus of their attention, and we want them to get it right away. Few things help tie the package together better than a unique, sophisticated, and eye-catching hairstyle. Like each of us though, first impressions come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Most business professionals are well aware that the secret to marketing is not just what you offer, but how you position and package it. And even then, it can sometimes come down to one simple thing: the price. This doesn’t mean that a cheap product will always sell more than an expensive one, but a price tag is still an important part of the package and can often shape the perspective of a potential buyer even more than the box a product comes in or the sales rep promoting it. Customers who routinely choose value over cost know that sometimes, “you pay for what you get”. If you want a quality product, sometimes it is best to shell out a few more bucks to ensure that your hard-earned money is going to be well-invested. These same facts hold true for postsecondary education. The Winnipeg Technical College Hairstyling program enjoys the benefits of being part of a publicly funded institution, the result www.manitobahairstylists.com

of which is a lower number on our price tag. Our provincial government generously provides financial support to our programming to directly ensure that students who want to be educated in Manitoba have an affordable option to do so. The truth is that the quality of education our students receive, the package, is completely the same. Only the price is lower.

more money in their pockets than they would have if they had taken a hairstyling program somewhere else. Each graduate of the WTC Hairstyling program saves approximately $6,000 in tuition, simply by making Winnipeg Technical College his or her school of choice. Winnipeg Technical College is the only publicly funded college in Manitoba to offer this kind of hairstyling program.

Now imagine going for that job interview, meeting with that client, or walking past your soon-to-be motherin-law and looking like a million bucks, but you know deep down that it only cost you a few hundred. Feels pretty good, doesn’t it? The hairstyling program at Winnipeg Technical College gives students everything they need to succeed: the opportunity to learn from industry professionals in a cutting-edge facility, four weeks of practical, hands-on work experience in a real salon, and

Both the daytime and evening options are accredited by and follow the guidelines of the Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade Apprenticeship Branch, meaning all graduates are fully qualified to step from the classroom onto the floor of any salon. To register for the upcoming September intake, or to learn more about the Winnipeg Technical College Hairstyling program, visit www.wtc.mb.ca or call 204.989.6500. $

“This was truly the most amazing event I have experienced, in my 40 year career! It was humbling to be a part of it! Everyone was buzzing with inspiration and excitement! People couldn’t believe the calibre of Education- there was something for everybody! Every detail was there, and everyone noticed and commented on that! First class, all the way! Clients said we covered it all- work to take right back home to the salon, work that motivated them to try new things, and work that was pure entertainment! JOICO & ISO go total resort takeover From January 18-24, 2014 Piidea brands, JOICO & ISO, hosted nearly 800 stylists and guests from across Canada at the luxurious Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa in Mexico for the ultimate seven-day, all-inclusive educational experience, Destination Education. JOICO & ISO reserved, branded, and took over the entire resort creating a sense of community unlike ever before. This seven-day retreat provided industry professionals the opportunity to network and connect outside of their otherwise competitive environments, thus creating a grand sense of community and the opportunity to build long-lasting relationships. In addition to this, Destination Education gave JOICO & ISO the opportunity to connect with clients, both emotionally and professionally. ”Over the past 40 years, I have attended innumerable seminars and trade shows, and I must say Joico’s Destination Education was the best ever experience I have had… I met so many wonderful people at Destination Education, learned a great deal, and had more than few laughs or a mojito or two. This was my first Destination Education and can say I will definitely be back. Thank you to everyone who made this experience so great,” said Robert Maich, stylist/owner at The Golden Razor Salon in Windsor, Ontario. Stylists were invited to classes that featured the latest tips and tricks in the industry. Classes were taught by master stylists and industry icons, Damien Carney, Sue Pemberton, Vivienne Mackinder, Robert Lobetta, Ben Mollin and Drea Lecher, and featured cut, colour, trend, and business education. Nights at the resort were full of fun, entertainment, and two high-impact hair shows.

JOICO & ISO transformed Tulum Resort & Spa into Destination Education, which was both educational and enjoyable. When guests weren’t learning about the latest trends and techniques, their days were packed with fun. Guests soaked up the sun on the beach and by the pool, had fun with Mexican & rock starthemed nights, live music, dazzling stage shows, and JOICO & ISO-themed cocktails – who doesn’t love a “JOI-tini”? All of this made for an unforgettable week that was the perfect mix of business and pleasure for the stylists. After the success of the brand’s first Destination Education in 2012, there was no doubt that this incredible event would be a success. The Piidea staff ensured that each guest was having a great time and made an effort to interact with everyone in attendance. Upon departure, guests and Piidea staff alike left with a sense of community and emotional belonging that will have a long-standing impact on the relationships created over these seven days. “This was truly the most amazing event I have experienced in my 40-year career! It was humbling to be a part of it,” said Debbie Goodridge, educator. “Everyone was buzzing with inspiration and excitement! People couldn’t believe the caliber of education – there was something for everybody. Every detail was there, and everyone noticed and commented that. First class, all the way! By the end of the week, it truly felt like one community.” $

“Honestly, everything was awesome! Excellent shows and classes, but the most important thing was to feel as a community with JOICO. Everything was perfect,” said Guy Trudel, educator. Manitoba Hairstylists’ Association
