Ellison Travel & Tours hile traveling in Paris with a student group on a tour planned by Ellison Travel & Tours, a local tour guide remarked that among the many nationalities she tours, none are as interested in, or as knowledgeable about their country’s involvement in World War I and II as Canadians. With the sense that interest is growing in this part of our history, it’s hard not to wonder why. First of all, recent anniversaries such as the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion come to mind. Secondly, there is the rapid disappearance of the World War II veterans and the emotion that their passing evokes. These are compelling reasons for the growing interest, but they are true for all other countries that were involved. So, there must be more. When the first war broke out in the summer of 1914, Canada – as a colony of Britain – was given no choice, we were automatically in. And, at the outset, we fought as part of the larger British force. But as the war ground on, Canadians began to make their mark on the battlefields. At the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915, Canadians endured the first poison gas attack in the history of warfare, not once, but twice, and stopped a rupture in the trench lines that might have been catastrophic for the larger war effort. Then, in April 1917, attacking for the first time as a single unit, Canada’s four divisions succeeded in taking Vimy Ridge, a victory they won after the French and British had failed for three years at a cost of in excess of 250,000 casualties. Spearheading the attack in 1918, along with their Australian colonial brothers at the crucial battle
of Amiens, they made significant gains that led directly to the final armistice. In the end, Canada took giant steps toward nationhood during the conflict and gained the right to sign the Treaty of Versailles separately from Britain. Student groups and adults alike burst with pride as we visit these sites and hear the stories of Canadian heroism. In WWII, Canada symbolically waited a week after Britain to declare war on Germany. After two years of inaction, Canadians led the ill-fated attack on Dieppe in August 1942. It was a disastrous defeat, but the gallantry of the Canadians could not be disputed. In July of 1943, Canadians demanded and were given an integral role in Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily. The taking of Sicily soon morphed into the attack on the mainland, and Canadians acquitted themselves marvellously in such famous places as Ortona, the Liri Valley and on the Gothic Line. As the focus turned to D-Day, and the Normandy Invasion, Canadians were given responsibility for one of the five beaches. So, as was the case in the First World War, Canadians played a major role in the victory in Europe. After the Second World War, Canadian school children learned that Canadians, as a charter member, had become stalwarts in the United Nations and won great respect as peacekeepers in a war weary world. This seemed to be a role that fit the values of the growing multicultural nation. As we move toward the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge, in 1917, and the 70th anniversary of the Second World War Victory in Europe, the interest among Canadians continues to grow. Africville Museum Africville was a historic black community established in the 1700s on the shores of the Bedford Basin in Halifax, NS. The lands were expropriated in the 1960s, and the community’s church was bulldozed in the middle of the night. Housed in a replica of the church, the museum tackles topics such as environmental racism, oppression, and community with students of all ages. Our Educational Resource Kit allows teachers to address these topics in class as a standalone resource or as preparation for a visit to the Africville site.

entreville Theme Park, located on the Toronto Islands, is the ultimate summer destination for families with young children. With over 30 rides and attractions this theme park offers up a full day of family fun. Getting to Centreville is almost as exciting as the park itself. Everyone will enjoy the scenic ride across Toronto Harbour on the Centre Island ferry!
This 20-acre theme park is designed as a turn-of-the-century Ontario village. You'll love the Antique Carousel with its fanciful animals. Kids can get plenty of driving experience zooming around in the Antique Cars, Touring Cars or Fire Engines. Spin yourself silly in the self-propelled Beasley Bear Ride and Twirling Tea Cups; or enjoy picturesque views from atop our windmill-style Ferris Wheel.
Scra Those who can handle a few more mble r thrills may want to tackle the rough seas aboard the Rockin' Ferry Ride, spin around in the Scrambler, ride on the Mine Coaster, take a plunge in the Log Flume Ride or bounce around in Bumper Boats and Bumper Cars.
Gotten your fill of thrills? Enjoy a sit down meal at the Carousel CafĂŠ or a snack in our many foodservice outlets. Next, head on over to Far Enough Farm where you can interact with mini-potbelly pigs, horses, mini ponies, sheep and much more! This family friendly petting farm, located right on the edge of Centreville, is open 365 days a year, weather permitting. Centreville offers kid-sized thrills, laughter, great food, fun and relief from the city's heat. The park-like setting makes it ideal for family outings and birthday parties too!

FABULOUS
THINGS TO DO at Centreville Theme Park 1. Ferry over to the Island: Every trip to
Centreville starts with the same ritual – a short ferry ride from the city center to Centre Island! Taking the Centre Island Ferry is an exciting and unforgettable first time boat-ride for thousands of children each summer.
2. Tour the park aboard the Centreville Train:
If you’ve never been to Centreville before then you’d better make the Centreville Train Station your first stop. The Centreville Train takes you on an 8-minute trip around the park and Far Enough Farm making it the perfect way to get the lay of the land before you start your day.
3. Visit Town Hall: Need to get the scoop on what’s happening in Centreville? Stop in at the Town Hall Guest Services desk. The friendly support team will be happy to answer any of your questions!
4. Race around in the Touring Cars: Put your
little one in the driver seat of Centreville’s Touring Cars! These brightly coloured racers are perfect for young riders. Race alone or with a friend!
5. Search for Centreville’s moose: There’s a lot
of exciting wildlife that is native to Centre Island, but can you spot someone who isn’t? Centreville’s moose is hiding somewhere in the park. Can you find him?
6. Spin around in the Scrambler: No visit to
Centreville is complete without a spin in the Scrambler. This classic carnival ride whirls you around in the dark to the tune of modern pop hits and a flashy light show. One of the most thrilling rides in the park, the Scrambler is guaranteed to make the whole family scream with delight.
7. Cool off at the wading pool: Centreville’s
Wading Pool is action-central during the hot summer days of July and August. It’s the perfect place to cool off during a busy day on the island.
8. Enjoy lunch on Uncle Al’s Smokehouse
Patio: Did you know that there are 14 food outlets in Centreville? Our favourite is Al’s Smokehouse! The bright, sunny patio is the perfect place to sit back, relax and enjoy lunch while watching the Centreville Train pass by.
9. Take a spin on Beasley Bear’s favourite ride:
What’s Beasley Bear’s favourite ride? The Beasley Bear Ride of course! Squeeze the whole family inside and then spin fast or spin slow on this self-propelled ride.
10. Win a prize at one of the Centreville games: Step right up and test your skills at one of Centreville’s midway games! Sink a basket, knock down a clown or win a camel race and you’ll be bringing home a prize.
11.
Get to know Comet, the brand new Zebu at Farm Enough Farm: Head on over to Far Enough Farm and say hello. Comet is a small-sized, South Asian breed. Kids will love getting up close and personal with this sweet and friendly guy (they actually make great pets).
23. Enjoy a ride on one of the Centreville
ponies: Your kids are going to love the cute-as-can-be Centreville ponies. These gentle, sweet and friendly ponies are the heart of Centreville’s Pony Express – one of the most popular attractions for younger riders.
12. Drive your own Fire Engine: The Fire Engines
24. Touch the sky on the windmill-style Ferris
13. Get up close and personal with an Alpaca:
25. Have a family picnic in the park:
are another classic Centreville ride. They’re perfect for young children who will love being able to enjoy the ride all by themselves – they’ll probably also get a real kick of ringing the Fire Engine bells!
Far Enough Farm is home to two sweet and friendly alpacas. An alpaca is similar to a llama, but smaller and a whole lot fuzzier! Their soft and curly hair helps them achieve their cute and cuddly look!
14. Capture a funny family photo: There
are plenty of opportunities to ham it up family-style, including the crazy cut-outs. Be ready to document the first times, funny moments and big smiles that your trip to the island will bring.
15. Bring home a big balloon: Everyone loves
a big, bright, shiny balloon! Now which will it be – Dora, Cinderella or SpongeBob?
16. Paddle around in your very own Swan Boat: Have you ever captained your own Swan before? Well now’s your chance! These electric Swan Boats will take you around the lagoon and are sure to delight!
17. Spend time with Centreville’s mascot
Beasley Bear: Wander around Centreville for an afternoon and you’re sure to run into a big fuzzy bear in a yellow shirt and matching hat. That’s Beasley Bear – Centreville’s mascot! Beasley loves to hand out hugs and high fives, so when you see him be sure to stop and say hello or maybe ask for a picture!
18. Take the family for a Sunday drive in the
Antique Cars: Captaining one of the Antique Cars is a Centreville right of passage. Kids absolutely adore driving the family around in these gas powered Ford Model-T Style cars.
19. Bounce around in the Bumper Boats:
Are you looking for a wild ride? Give the Bumper Boats a try! Cool off as you spin, bump and splash around on this family favourite.
20. Practice your scream in the Haunted Barrel
Works: Calling all brave souls! Centreville’s Haunted Barrel Works is ready to put your scream to the test! Can you make it all the way around without getting scared? The only way to find out is to take a ride on the Haunted Barrel Works.
21. Ride the tiger on the Antique Carousel:
Centreville’s Antique Carousel is the only one of its kind in Canada. Built in 1908, the centuries old Carousel carries a menagerie of 52 beautiful animals, including lions, tigers, horses, ostrich and more!
22. Participate in Centreville’s KidsFest:
Centreville is home to some great summer events, like KidsFest (July 6, 7 & 8 from 11am-4pm). KidsFest activities are free for all to participate in and delivers three full days of free, family fun!
Wheel: One of the best views found on the islands comes from atop Centreville’s windmill-style Ferris Wheel. Fast and fun, the Ferris Wheel is the best way to take in a bird’s eye view of the island.
Surrounded by 600 acres of pristine parkland, you’ll have no trouble finding the perfect picnic spot for your family! Take a break from the hustle and bustle of Centreville’s Town Square to hang out under a shady tree, bask in the suns rays, or ogle at the cityscape.
26. Enter Centreville’s Amusing Race:
Centreville’s Amusing Race is an exciting scavenger hunt that will take you on a journey through the park and farm as you answer trivia questions and overcome “roadblocks.” It’s a great family event that takes place weekends in September (10&11, 17&18, 24&25).
27. Meet an exotic bird: Far Enough Farm is home to a wide variety of bird and animal species. Stroll over to the farm to meet and greet with peacocks, Golden pheasant and more!
28. Take in a fantastic view of Toronto’s
skyline: Have you ever looked at a postcard of Toronto and wished you could take in that beautiful view of the city skyline first hand? Well, you can on Centre Island! There are plenty of places to sit and take in the view, but our favourite is from the deck at Toronto Island BBQ & Beer Co., just around the bend from the Centre Island ferry dock.
29. Plunge down the Log Flume: Thrill seekers
will love feeling the cool island air rush through their hair as they take the 12 meter plunge down the Log Flume. Let’s hope you like heights - if your kids are into this ride, you’ll be going down it more than a few times.
30. Take a family photo beside the Far Enough Farm International Harvester tractor: The tractor at Far Enough Farm is the perfect spot to snap that yearly family photo. Smile and say “Centreville!”
31. Play in the sand and surf at Chelsea
Beach: Take a break from the buzz of Centreville to play in the sand and surf at Chelsea Beach! Located just beyond the bridge, you’ll love soaking up the sun’s rays on this well-protected stretch of beach. Chelsea Beach has a Blue Flag rating (water excellence label) and has a lifeguard on daily duty.
32. Spend quality time with family and
friends: When it comes down to it, a visit to Centreville is all about spending quality time with family and friends. From plunging down the Log Flume to making new friends at Far Enough Farm and splashing around on Chelsea Beach, there are millions of memories to be made on Centre Island. Gather up the gang and ferry over to the island for an unforgettable day of family island fun!

Groove School of Dance Groove School of Dance offers exciting and engaging dance programming with a focus on selfesteem and creativity. The school’s uncompetitive environment creates a familial atmosphere where kids can try their feet at ballet, hip-hop, tap, break dancing, acro, lyrical, and more. Beginners receive a basic introduction to dance, working on hand-eye coordination, balance, creative exploration, and self-expression. Experienced dancers focus on skills, creative choreography, teamwork, and selfconfidence through performance. Groove’s team of warm, loving instructors ensure each child feels like the individual he/she is and welcome children with special needs. At Groove, fun comes above all else and all dancers are made to feel good about themselves no matter what level they’re at. Classes run throughout the week and on weekends in a number of locations including the main studio in the Avenue Road and Eglinton area. Angela Williams, Groove’s founder and artistic director, and the co-owner of Zodiactors Musical Theatre Company, has more than 20 years of experience in jazz, ballet, gymnastics, hip hop, musical theatre, and acro. Prior to starting Groove, Angela worked as a special needs teacher at a public

A mom of two, Angela opened a small studio more than 15 years ago in a church basement. She had 20 students and she taught all the classes. Today, Groove has more than 800 students and 30 staff. Groove is also known for its fabulous birthday parties, offering parents a stress-free experience while giving kids a party they’ll be talking about all year. From coordinating special guests, to setting up and cleaning up, entertaining kids, and serving all the guests, Groove staff take care of everything so parents can sit back and enjoy the party! Groove party themes include, but are not limited to, princesses, rock stars, super heroes, pirates, ballerinas, Glee, beach blast, circus, disco dance party, retro 80s, etc. Groove also offers fun-filled holiday, PD Day, and summer camps, with special guests, dance parties, arts and crafts, and more. Liberty Entertainment Group Casa Loma – where learning comes to life. Casa Loma is one of Toronto’s premier historic attractions. Originally home to Canadian financier, industrialist, and military officer, Sir Henry Pellatt, the castle offers students a unique and interesting way to experience and learn about the early 20th century. Casa Loma allows students to journey into the past. Our educational guided tours will connect students to the concepts of historical thinking through live interactive experience. In 1911, Sir Henry Pellatt engaged noted architect E.J. Lennox to help him realize a lifelong dream, the creation of an Edwardian castle on the top of a hill overlooking Toronto. It took 300 men nearly three years to complete the nearly to 200,000 square foot castle at a cost of $3,500,000 (at the time). Situated on five acres, Casa Loma was the largest private residence in Canada. Sir Henry Pellatt with his wife Lady Mary enjoyed Casa Loma for less than ten years before financial misfortune forced him to abandon his home. Step back into a bygone era at Casa Loma, Canada’s majestic castle. For more information on Casa Loma and our education tours please visit:

YOUNG PEOPLE’S THEATRE (YPT) is the oldest professional theatre company in Toronto and is a national producer and presenter of theatre for young audiences – the first and largest of its kind in Canada. Over the past 50 years, YPT has staged many of the most important plays that form the canon of work for youth in our country. YPT continues to develop new work and create partnerships with theatre companies across the country and around the world. But that’s not all. The enriched learning experiences of YPT’s Education & Participation Department provide young people with opportunities to develop their whole being. Through our workshops in community shelters and agencies, educational initiatives in Toronto classrooms, drama school programs in four locations throughout the city, and training and apprenticeship opportunities, we place learning at the centre of everything we do. The Ada Slaight Education Centre at YPT is staffed with highly-qualified teachers who create programs and resources designed to connect our shows to the Ontario curriculum and fully engage students. These resources include study guides, preview evenings, behind-the-scenes tours and post-show Q&As with the cast. We also offer customized workshops for students and teachers, as well as professional development for educators at a nominal fee. At Young People’s Theatre we strive for a positive and lasting impact on the emotional, social, and intellectual development of young people – giving them the chance to grow into the unique and wonderful people they were born to be.

Brooks Farms At Brooks Farms, children learn about grain seeds and their everyday uses, tour the barnyard to see farm animals and their habits, and a take a wagon/train ride to see the entire farm operation. They can explore the apple orchard, various fruit, vegetable, and grain fields, the sugar bush, and pick their own fruits or vegetables. For the older children, explore a comparison of rural and urban life based on the unique perspective of farmers and farm life in the 21st century. As well, we will discuss the vast technology changes in farming over the years and investigate environmental issues such as climate change and its immense impact on growing food and healthy living.

TreeTop Eco-Adventure Park Coming to a new school can be hard for students. It is a time of change, exploration, new friendships, and the strengthening of old ones too. Since 2012, TreeTop Eco-Adventure Park has been the best place for schools to visit to help new classmates bond and build friendships. Our Park is one of the safest parks around. All of our aerial guides are trained to the National Fire Prevention Association standards, the same organization that trains firefighters, police, EMTs, and the military. We inspect all of our courses and equipment daily and have monthly and yearly inspections both internally and externally by the Technical Standards & Safety Authority. Everyone on-site is also trained in first aid and CPR-C.
This year we have added the CLIC-IT system, a continuous belay system that makes it physically impossible for students to unclip in mid-air. We are the only park in the GTA to employ this system. This reduces the risk of falling — or any other serious accident — to zero. You can have confidence that your students will be completely safe at our park. We have three courses at TreeTop Eco-Adventure Park: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each course gets more difficult and higher off the ground culminating in our Canyon Zip and Canyon Bridge, which is over eight-storeys tall, and ending with our Big Zip, a 734-foot zip line. We are set up to run 300 people through our park per day, making it possible to bring an entire grade for either a graduation trip, or an introduction trip. We offer discounts for school groups over 150 students. Our park is located on the same scenic grounds as Trillium Trails banquet facility, a local staple. Through this facility we can run leadership camps as well as other large functions with food needs. Some of our other activities include human foosball and volleyball courts and outdoor combat archery (an extra per-person fee.) As an added bonus, two teachers or administrators can participate for free for every 30 students who attend the park. If you would like to book, please call (905) 655-1113 or email us at info@treetopeco-adventurepark.com.

Treetop Trekking Brampton Treetop Trekking Brampton, located in the beautiful Heart Lake Conservation Area, is the perfect activity for large groups (ages nine and up). Groups of all sizes can enjoy a day of zip-lining and aerial game challenges! Treetop Trekking Brampton is also home to Great Blue Heron, our twin 1,000-foot zip-lines that send you soaring right over the stunning waters of Heart Lake! Additionally, we also offer team building, GPS rallies and night climbs. GPS rally and team building can be added onto your day of climbing, providing you and your group with a full day of learning both in the air and on the ground. Team building consists of a series of guided leadership games engaging students with important topics like communication, adaptability, teamwork, and trust. The GPS rally equips participants with their own GPS where they are given the task of finding varying waypoints hidden throughout the forest with a series of fun riddles and challenges to be solved — it’s like a treasure hunt in the forest! New to the park this season is the Red-Tailed Hawk observation deck that weaves above and below the aerial game courses, offering spectacular views of the forest canopy and lakeside. With an experienced and passionate team of guides to help you navigate your way through the courses, you are sure to have a blast in an exceptionally safe and exhilarating way! With something for everyone, Treetop Trekking is a fantastic activity to get your class outside and working together!
