Different Something at the Village
Experiential learning is all about doing something new and different, leaving a lasting impact on your students’ education. We invite you to disconnect from the modern world and embark on a captivating journey to Black Creek Pioneer Village!
Step back in time as you and your students explore a meticulously recreated 19th-century village. From the rustic buildings to the bustling streets, every detail provides an authentic glimpse into the lives of early settlers. Watch as costumed historians bring history to life, sharing stories, trades, and traditions from the era. Your students will be captivated by sights, sounds, and smells of a bygone era.
Recognizing the importance of highlighting marginalized voices, the Village is changing the narrative and “re-storying” the past. Students hear stories of real marginalized individuals living in the Toronto region and surrounding areas in the 19th century. Every student visits the traditional Objibwe wiigiwaam built under the guidance of Indigenous elders and knowledge-keepers, located next to the homes of a settler family to remind us of all the enduring presence of Indigenous peoples on the land. A visit to the Village encourages students to view the past through many lenses and consider how all peoples created the region we live in today.
The Village’s newest education program, “Invented: Propelled by Imagination,” includes a visit to our brand-new interactive exhibit focused on scientific innovation and science fiction in the 1800s. Discovering how the doers and dreamers of the era changed their world, students are challenged to solve real-world problems and empowered to see how they can make a difference to our world today.
At the Village, education is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that true understanding comes through active participation. That’s why our field trips offer hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations. Students can try their hand at a selection of 19th century sports and games, artifact discovery, nature walks, spinning and weaving wool, and much more. By actively engaging in historical tasks, they’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the challenges and triumphs of early settlers.

Casa Loma
Casa Loma – where learning comes to life.
Casa Loma is one of Toronto’s premier historic attractions. Originally home to Canadian financier, industrialist, and military officer, Sir Henry Pellatt, the castle offers students a unique and interesting way to experience and learn about the early 20th century. Casa Loma allows students to journey into the past. Our educational guided tours will connect students to the concepts of historical thinking through live interactive experience.
In 1911, Sir Henry Pellatt engaged noted architect E.J. Lennox to help him realize a lifelong dream, the creation of an Edwardian castle on the top of a hill overlooking Toronto. It took 300 men nearly three years to complete the nearly to 200,000 square foot castle at a cost of $3,500,000 (at the time). Situated on five acres, Casa Loma was the largest private residence in Canada. Sir Henry Pellatt with his wife Lady Mary enjoyed Casa Loma for less than ten years before financial misfortune forced him to abandon his home.
Step back into a bygone era at Casa Loma, Canada’s majestic castle.

180 Shaw Street, #104-105 (first floor) Toronto, ON M6J 2W5
The exhibit links three moments in time of exceptional global resonance:
1. the first large-scale massacre of Jewish people during the Holocaust, that occurred at Babyn Yar on 29 and 30 September 1941;
2. the creation and dedication of the extraordinary, jewel-like, wooden synagogue – including several maquettes used in the planning phase and a scale-model of the completed synagogue; and
3. the current Russian war on Ukraine. The exhibition holds space for both sadness and hope.
Only 82 years have passed since the Holocaust ended and attacks to nearby grounds by the Russian military are taking place, making this exhibit more pertinent than ever before.
The Synagogue at Babyn Yar: Turning the Nightmare of Evil into a Shared Dream of Good is on view from 18 April to 12 November 2023 at the Koffler Gallery.

Roseneath Theatre is one of the country’s leading producers of awardwinning theatre for children and their families. We are a small organization with a big impact. Roseneath is committed to artistic work that promotes social justice and challenges young people to have constructive dialogue that creates meaningful change in their communities.
Young people have as rich an emotional life as adults. They are limited in experience, but their joys and heartaches, victories and defeats are felt with as much power and passion as adults. In creating theatre for them, we find themes that express as much of that rich, complex life as we can and then distill it into a theatrical form that is accessible: feast, not fast food; simple, not simplistic; Emotionally powerful – not superficial; play up, don’t play down. These are the artistic touchstones, guiding principles, and tremendous challenges we adhere to when creating theatre for young people.
This season, our programs have the potential to reach thousands of vulnerable children throughout Ontario. Our work enhances the quality of life for youth throughout the province by providing a springboard for discussion, pathways to empathy, resources, and insight. Please consider joining us in providing the means to provide safer spaces for our 2SLGBTQ+ youth.

Young People’s Theatre (YPT) launches the next stage in the company’s 58-year history, co-led by Artistic Director Herbie Barnes and Executive Director Nancy Webster. This new era also marks the unveiling of YPT’s expanded and renovated theatre complex, more than 10 years in the making. As Canada’s largest and oldest professional theatre for young audiences, the company produces and presents a full season of theatre and arts education programming, serving approximately 150,000 patrons annually. With the purchase of a multi-use building across the street from its historic theatre, YPT has expanded its footprint, increased its accessibility, refreshed its lobbies, and upgraded the theatrical equipment capabilities of its 433-seat Ada Slaight Stage and 115-seat Studio. United in vision, the two facilities now anchor the corner of Front and Frederick streets in downtown Toronto creating Canada’s largest theatre complex for young people.
YPT is staffed with professional artist educators who create programs and resources designed to connect the shows presented on stage to the Ontario curriculum, and fully engage students. These resources include complimentary study guides, play companion workshops, post-show Q&As with cast members, and teacher preview evenings. The enriched learning experiences of YPT’s Education & Participation Department provide young people with opportunities to develop their whole being. Learn more at youngpeoplestheatre.org.

Learn and have fun with the animals at the Ottawa Humane Society! A field trip at the OHS is a one-of-kind opportunity for students from grades 1 to 12. Every field trip is individually crafted to be exciting and educational for each age group.
Students will be able to get hands-on with Ottawa’s animals and they will get an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at what goes into saving an animal’s life and at how the animals are cared for every day.
But that’s not all, students will also enjoy TWO presentations about how they can help create a better future for animals everywhere and how they can become the best pet owners possible.
Field trips are three hours long and are brimming with content and fun. Field trips are offered in English and French to meet the needs of any classroom.
Field trips cost $5 per student with a minimum cost of $110. Teachers, parents and volunteers can come for free.

This season we are celebrating our ground-breaking work by bringing back three of our most popular productions from the last decade including The Money Tree - which focuses on imagination and financial literacy, Outside - which encourages safe spaces for 2SLGBTQ+ teens, and Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls - which is about a gender queer young person discovering their gender identity.
www.roseneath.ca
These three pieces are coming back at a time when concerns about the economy and safety for 2SLGBTQ+ people are hot topics that require multigenerational and constructive dialogue for meaningful progress to happen.
We welcome the complex conversations that these stories bring forward and we invite young people and the adults who care for and educate them to join us in moving forward together.
