Canadian Museum for Human Rights Class visits to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights: great for teachers and students A class visit to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is an excellent way to connect with human rights curriculum. This national museum, located in Winnipeg, was built on education. It offers learning resources in both English and French for students of all levels, from elementary to high school. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 can explore human rights concepts through school programs such as “My Rights, Our Rights,” “Be an Upstander” and “First Peoples’ Rights in a Changing Canada.” All programs were developed in consultation with educators. In younger grades, students learn about the rights we all have as human beings and how to respect each other. Older students are challenged to explore concepts of freedoms, rights and responsibilities through analysis of Canadian and world events. The Museum examines injustices towards people around the world, including First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, and is particularly committed to sharing stories of resistance, empowerment and hope. Teachers unable to bring students to the Museum in person can still easily connect with human rights content. A toolkit full of educational resources is available on humanrights.ca. The tools compiled here better equip teachers to prepare appropriate lessons to engage students and enrich their rights-related teaching and learning experiences. The toolkit is available free of charge. While it is designed for early, middle and senior years teachers across Canada, from any type of schooling situation (including homeschooling), it can be used by anyone, anywhere. Whether in person on via technology, visits to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights are always a great educational experience.

We are dedicated to ensuring that our education program is not only a fun and memorable experience, but also a learning experience. We offer a variety of different programs: hands-on and interpretive; guided and self-guided tours; daycare; and a Pioneer Day Camp. Although each of these programs has a slightly different presentation, the message still conforms to our mission of continuing to engage future generations.

Camp Wannakumbac is not-for-profit and non-denominational summer camp with a tradition of unique and creative programming. Our programs and themes are structured specifically to the age group attending that week and have consistently received positive reviews from our campers. We have a culture and staff that is extremely dedicated to providing the best experience possible for children. We’re located on the west shore of Clear Lake next to Riding Mountain National Park where we are surrounded by some of the best natural beauty in the province. Each summer we strive to achieve a balance of honouring our traditions in 68 years of operating, as well as incorporating new and exciting activities. One of those traditions is our Polar Bear Club. Campers can earn a badge that has been received for generations by jumping into Clear Lake each morning for their week at camp. By choosing some of our new activities, campers can learn lifelong skills as they take on the challenging mountain biking trails near our site or witness a fish bite their hook through the clear water of the lake. Come find out the truth behind our name by joining us this summer at Camp Wannakumbac!

Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum There is a hidden treasure in Winnipeg. A place that was made before Manitoba. A place that, at the time of its construction, was considered by the people of Red River to be the greatest undertaking they’d ever been witness to. It was to be the largest home ever built here, and today continues to stand as the largest oak log structure in North America.
I
ndeed, the convent built by and for the Sisters of Charity of Montréal – commonly known as the Grey Nuns – would stand the test of time to become Winnipeg’s oldest building, its oldest home. If it was considered massive in the late 1840s (it measures 100 feet by 40 feet with two full storeys, a basement and usable third floor), with the progress of time and in relation to newer constructions, it came to be lovingly referred to as “la petite maison blanche” – the little white house. Today, the Grey Nuns’ Convent stands nestled between two newer and much more imposing buildings. Set back from Taché Avenue and sheltered – hidden – by a canopy of large elm trees, the little white house is now home to Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum. From the very beginning, it’s doors were always open. In fact, the Grey Nuns were known to refuse no one. In solidarity with that tradition, Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum remains open to the public yearround and can be booked for special programming, private functions or events. Our specialty school programs, created in line with provincial curricula, bring students into a world of discovery and hands-on activities designed to deepen their understanding and appreciation for history, with a particular focus on French-Canadian and Métis contributions to the development of Manitoba. Let them try their hand at construction techniques, feel the weight of hauling water on their shoulders, figure out how to assemble a Red River Cart, or even bake traditional treats! Also explore the museum with our friendly guides, who can help you and your students discover our impressive collection of regionally and nationally significant artifacts, including the largest collection of Louis Riel’s belongings. Schools programs are available Monday to Friday throughout the school year. Evening, weekend or summertime bookings can also be arranged. Close to 20,000 people visit Winnipeg’s oldest building every year, whether by guided tour, as independent learners, for catered meetings or boutique shopping. With a national reputation as an excellent steward to a collection of over 30,000 artifacts, Le Musée de SaintBoniface Museum – housed in the little white house – is anything but small. Maybe it’s time you made your way to this hidden treasure at 494 Taché Avenue.

TOUR THE POWERED BY:
PROUD PARTNERS:
What is the Canola Learning Centre? The Canola Learning Centre has been providing free farm field trips to school, daycare and youth groups for 20 seasons. The Canola Learning Centre aims to give each of its visitors an exciting, hands-on experience in a true farm setting. Our tours are interactive and give visitors the chance to learn more about the farm to food connection. Visitors meet farmers who work at the Canola Learning Centre and learn about food production, soil health, seeds and how plants grow.
Neil Campbell School said, “Awesome field trip. It has become a yearly tradition for my class to come on the last day of school to celebrate our year of learning about food and agriculture.
The Canola Learning Centre is located at Kelburn Farm. Kelburn Farm is a 500-acre grain research and plot test site owned and operated by Richardson International.
Why should youth learn about farming? As our population grows, the need for more sustainable food production grows along with it. The Manitoba Canola Growers Association developed the Canola Learning Centre to create awareness about agriculture in urban children, an under-reached audience, who will become the decision-makers of tomorrow. Manitoba Canola Growers feels it is important to educate children about farming and the farm to food connection.
When can you visit? Tours run from mid-May through the end of August each year. Our tours are unique as they are designed to meet the curriculum needs of each group and are open to all ages. Summer tours (July and August) are held for daycares and youth groups.
BEST TOUR – BUT DON’T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT:

The children were very engaged in all the activities. It was a very good learning experience for all.”

Farm & Food Discovery Centre Makes for Ideal Field Trip Located 15 minutes south of Winnipeg on Highway 75, the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre takes students on an exploration of modern farming and food production. Interactive exhibits lead from the farmer’s field and the livestock barn to the food processor and the kitchen. Students delve into Manitoba crops and soils, and learn about the factors that influence crop production – from insects to weather and climate. A highlight of the Centre is the viewing windows into breeding, gestation, birthing and nursery rooms of the hog barn. Contemporary animal care and production practices include a virtual ultrasound to show embryos in a pregnant sow. Students learn about milking cows and follow the steps our milk takes to get to the store. Food processing, food safety and human nutrition are explored in the demonstration kitchen to complete the food production journey. Educators can select from 10 curriculum-focused programs, including the popular Great Grain Exchange, Science of Spuds, Dairy Discovery and the ecology-themed This is Our Planet program. The hands-on activities bring learning to life, and connect curricular themes in social studies, science, geography, health and nutrition to the food we eat. Located at the University of Manitoba’s Glenlea Research Station, the Centre also showcases the latest research by the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. Hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (February to mid-December) Contact Centre staff at 204-883-2524 or visit www.ffdc.ca for admission costs and more information. manitoba School Destinations

Hudson’s Bay Company’s Upper Fort Garry was the site of commerce, conflict, history, heroism, culture, military might and the Red River Colony’s social centre. Here our ancestors rallied, claimed our place as a province thus leading the west into Confederation and defining our nation, Canada. The trials and triumphs of UFG are our past and a window to our future. The Friends of Upper Fort Garry re-energized this neglected, historic site using art and technology. Upper Fort Garry Provincial Park and Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Heritage Wall brings people together in a uniquely beautiful space. Equal parts imagination, illumination and entertainment, it transcends discovering facts into stories told through technology based interpretive approaches to learning. Our app facilitates discovery about the site’s buildings and intriguing icons on the ML&L Heritage Wall with its additional element, soundscapes. Physical Education Program
Applied Physics Program
Our all trampoline playing courts offers a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy. Fitness participants can feel the burn at Sky Zone’s original SkyFitness class, which combines advanced calisthenics and a three-dimensional cardio and strength training program.
At Sky Zone, we combine physical activities with education programs too. What better place to learn the basic laws of physics while jumping on trampolines? Ever wonder what makes you jump so high on a trampoline? Or what keeps you moving? Here at Sky Zone, we think of that all the time!!
SkyFitness encourages a healthy mixture of fitness and fun. This is a great way to change up your normal Physical Education class - a great activity for all school-aged groups to build stamina and core strength!
Starting this winter 2016, we will be introducing a program in which teachers can incorporate the Manitoba curriculum for grades 7 and 8 of applied physics and mathematics. We call it “The Bounce Challenge”. Our trained staff will direct your students at 4 hands-on experimental stations on our trampolines. We will guide participants to complete several tasks that will help them understand Newton’s laws of motion. We will also provide the teachers with instructions on how to prepare the students for the challenge prior to coming to Sky Zone and also give them sample questions for their students once they complete their tasks. Our program will teach the basic physical properties of matter, energy and motion.
Join us this winter for a new and exciting way to learn physics! 44

5 REASONS WHY THE REAL ESCAPE IS IDEAL FOR STUDENTS: 1. THOUGHT PROCESS The clues and puzzles have been specifically designed to incorporate different types of thinkers. The students must recognize the problems at hand and choose an individual who may be stronger in that area.
2. ABSTRACT THOUGHT The game requires and encourages the kids to think outside the box.
3. TIME CONSTRAINTS They must solve difficult clues and puzzles as a group on a time constraint which mirrors working under pressure in the real world.
4. DELEGATION AND LEADERSHIP In the chaos and confusion that awaits in the room, participants must take charge and delegate certain tasks and manage time wisely.
5. A GOOD TIME The students will have a great time. This event will prove to be a memorable experience for all!

Winnipeg Humane Society The Winnipeg Humane Society is educating tomorrow’s humane leaders today with a variety of curriculum-based programs at its shelter and in the classroom.
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” – Mahatma Gandhi School programs are curriculum-based and vary depending on what grade is being taught. It’s the WHS’s mission to teach students about animal welfare and ensure we each do our part in building a compassionate and engaged community for both animals and people. Treating animals with kindness directly impacts the way we treat ourselves and each other. School visits are $35. For the most enriching experience, book a WHS shelter tour and get a behind-the-scenes look at all the facets of the WHS. The WHS is more than adoptions and requires an intensive amount of work from both staff and volunteers to run its clinic, obedience classes, and community programs. Shelter tour fees are only $3.50 per student; there are no fees for supervisors, and a free lunch space is included. All programs – tours and school visits – include interaction with animals, which will be the students’ most exciting part of the day.

Every year, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) engages more than 40,000 students from nursery school all the way through high school with educational programming and concerts in a live symphonic setting. Incorporating the WSO’s educational programs into your school year is a great way to invigorate students’ experience and music education. It exposes them to live orchestral performances and meets the recommended music outcomes of the Manitoba Curriculum Framework. Plus, the WSO makes music fun and exciting with musicians who are passionate about music education. The smallest of music fans can participate in Nursery Notes, which introduces pre-school children to the concepts of rhythm and melody. Students in Grades 1-3 will discover a magical world of great music enhanced by visual entertainers and plenty of surprises in Musical Discoveries. The Adventures in Music program is the musical event of the year for more than 16,000 Manitoba students in Grades 4-6. This exciting program includes opportunities for students and teachers to perform with the WSO. Lesson plans and teacher study guides are provided for both Musical Discoveries and Adventures in Music to support student and teacher engagement and preparation. Pricing for these programs begins at only $6.25 per student and are presented in both official languages. Middle and high school students can attend a Student Matinee where they will learn about orchestral music in a compact, 90-minute experience that includes a pre-rehearsal chat, an introduction by the conductor, a full performance of a symphonic work, and concludes with an on-stage Q&A with the conductor. Comprehensive lesson plans are provided to help prepare your students and deepen their understanding of the work to be performed. Teachers can also bring students to a full concert performance for as little as $17 per student. Ask us about backstage tours! manitoba School Destinations

LaserTopia
L
aserTopia truly is the perfect place for fun! Come and enjoy the only laser tag facility in Winnipeg that offers over 4,500 square feet of pure FUN…on two levels! It just isn’t laser tag unless you can play on two levels – it is so much more fun! If you’ve never played laser tag at LaserTopia, you have to try it. Our arena is set in an Indiana Jones theme, with floor-to-ceiling handpainted walls, filled with plants that light up the black light arena. Up to 32 people can play at the same time, and we run games every 15 minutes. We have entertained thousands of people from ages six to 90 years old, so if you are looking to book a group, or just coming in with a few friends, come give us a try. We also offer an amazing arcade, complete with two lanes of glow-inthe-dark mini bowling, the Typhoon Experience (you have to try this two-seat ride – with 10 rides to choose from, it’s like being on a
roller coaster!), Laser Frenzy Maze (this is our “jewel heist” attraction: when the game begins, laser beams appear and you have to go over and under them without the laser beam touching you!), racing cars, racing bikes, temple run, wheel of fortune, NBA basketball, skeeball and so much more. We also offer a full concession, and our redemption counter is out of this world! We can accommodate groups from 10 to 250 people. LaserTopia has been host to hundreds of school groups, and once they’ve played here, they can’t wait to return. If you’re looking for an outing with your classmates, or having your graduation, look no further. We offer it all at LaserTopia! When you bring your class to LaserTopia, teachers play for free!
you watch a fun two-minute video explaining the rules of the game and the equipment you will play with. We also have game marshals to assure a fun, safe environment, so you can leave the kids behind and come play with your colleagues if you like. Call us to book an event. We will even open our doors early, providing you have at least 20 people playing laser tag.
Teachers, don’t forget: this place is not just for kids – many faculty come to play and really enjoy themselves. You don’t need to know how to play. We have a really cool briefing room where
