Ricklyn Farm Ricklyn Farm is a family-owned and operated petting zoo that started out with a love for animals and the goal of educating others about animals along the way. We give people an up-close, handson experience where they can interact and fall in love with our animals like we do every day. Ricklyn Farm wants to give everyone the opportunity to learn and interact with all types of animals, whether it be an emu, llama, donkey, cow, etc. If you’re looking for somewhere to take your children where they can learn and have fun all at the same time, then make sure to contact us! We offer birthday parties, mobile petting zoos and farm tours. There are lots of activities to choose from. Come spend a day with us on the farm, learning about animals and getting your chance to ride a pony, feed a llama, get a kiss from a highland cow, a hug from an emu or anything else exciting that may happen that day! Ricklyn Farm also has a picnic area, so make sure to pack a lunch and enjoy eating outside with the company of our animals not to far away. Ricklyn Farm tries to expand a little every year, so give us a call and come check out what new and exciting animals and events we may have for you! We are located just outside of St. Claude and are open by appointment only, so make sure to book your day with us today! It’s easy – just give us a call, send us a text or email us. You can also visit our website or follow us on Facebook for all the latest news!

hether you are a kid or a kid at heart, all ages will love interacting with our friendly animals and staff!

We Are Now Booking For Summer 2015

We are a family owned and operated petting zoo. We do this for fun, for our love of animals, and to educate others about animals along the way. Each time you meet our animals you will make a best friend for life. Most of our animals love giving hugs and kisses whether an emu, goat, puppy, or donkey. Our goal is to teach you about our animals and give you a hands on, up close experience with them where you can interact with the animals as we do every day. One of our favorite parts of petting zoos is seeing different species of animals interact together as well as how they interact with children. We hope that every encounter you have with our animals will be one to remember and the time of your life!

We hope that you’ll fall in love with our critters as much as we have!

Wolf/Polar Bear Project Thompson, Manitoba has become the Wolf Capital of the World, with numerous wolf pro-jects underway in the areas of research, ecotourism, conferences, conservation, public art, human dimensions study, Aboriginal culture and more. Situated in northern Manito-ba’s wilderness boreal forest region, wolves have lived and preyed here for thousands of years. With no ranching and little farming, human/wolf conflicts have not been an is-sue, as in many other parts of the world. There has been very little scientific study done in northern Manitoba on wolf movements, diet and population. There are many un-knowns. One wolf author stated, “You are living in a researcher’s dream world.” Wolves and their prey (deer in the south, moose in the forest areas, caribou in the taiga region and polar bear interaction along the coast of Hudson Bay) in Manitoba’s biomes offer unique study opportunities. A research team has been gathered, with Dr. Marco Musiani and Dr. Paul Galpern from University of Calgary, to study the wolf and polar bear dynamics along Hudson Bay coastline at the edge of the Arctic. A limited number of schools will be allowed to participate by receiving and tracking GPS data of radio collared wolves and getting reports from the researchers. To learn about wolves, polar bears and climate change in one study project is unique and somewhat ground breaking. Schools that participate from different provinces, states and countries will be able to link to each other and learn about northern predators, and also them-selves, living in different parts of the world. Schools from northern Manitoba, USA and Italy have expressed early interest. It will be a fascinating interaction at different levels. Options for study and learning will be discussed. We anticipate significant media attention.

YoUr sCHool CoUld Help Us FInd oUT! University researchers in conjunction with Manitoba government want to learn how two predator species interact at the edge of the Arctic. Do wolves predate on bear cubs as they come off the sea ice in July? Are mother polar bears affected? Is climate change and early melting ice a factor? This is new and fascinating (and fun!) research in an unstudied ecosystem. A few schools in North America can participate by sponsoring a GPS collar to track “their” wolf for a $400+ contribution. Students can learn about eco-systems, predators, biodiversity, GPS tracking, and link to participating schools. Deadline is Oct. 18/2014. Research begins in 2015. Participation is limited. Royal Winnipeg Ballet The RWB School is home to the Recreational Division and the Professional Division, two fantastic dance programs that provide high-quality training to aspiring professional dancers, recreational students, and teachers of dance. The RWB School offers classes for all ages and skill levels, so keep reading to find out which program is right for you!

Recreational Division The RWB School’s Recreational Division gives dancers of all ages the opportunity to train with outstanding dance instructors. The Recreational Division offers classes in a variety of disciplines, including creative movement for ages three to five, ballet technique, boys classes, tap, jazz, hip hop, modern, lyrical, conditioning, and adult dance. “We offer excellent training standards in a warm, encouraging environment,” says Kelly Bale, Principal of the Recreational Division. “Students develop life-long skills while developing an appreciation for the art of dance.” Students of the Recreational Division receive discounts on RWB Company shows. They get opportunities to audition for RWB Company performances and get to brush shoulders with professional dancers. As well, costumes for all performances are included in the cost of tuition and are designed by the talented RWB wardrobe department. “At the RWB School, dance is accessible to everyone. I encourage anyone who is thinking of taking dance lessons to just try it. It’s a form of exercise and self-expression,” says Bale.

Professional Division Established in 1970, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School’s Professional Division was created to provide the RWB Company with well-trained classical ballet dancers.

26

manitoba School Destinations

The Professional Division includes the Ballet Academic Program, a fulltime, intensive program for students who aspire to become professional ballet dancers. In this program, the students take intensive professional ballet training while participating in integrated academic classes, giving them a well-rounded education. Over 70 per cent of the RWB Company dancers are graduates of the Professional Division. Graduates also go on to dance in prestigious ballet companies all over the world. “The RWB School’s Professional Division is a vocational training program for young people with the passion, talent, and desires to pursue a career in dance,” says Arlene Minkhorst, Director of the RWB School. The next level of training offered in the Professional Division is the Aspirant Program, a full-time program providing advanced-level training to dancers transitioning from student to professional dancer. This program may give students the opportunity to attend Company class, be cast in its ballet productions, and work alongside professional dancers. For dancers who want to have a career as a dance teacher, the RWB School offers the Teacher Training Program, where students get training from Professional Division faculty and get to observe, assist, and teach students of the Recreational Division. Students are also prepared for examinations in the Cecchetti Method. “At the RWB, the Company, the Professional Division, and the Recreational Division are linked so closely together,” says Minkhorst. “The special relationships shared between us are quite rare in the dance world. It is a privilege to be a part of the RWB family.”

Discover the Magic of the North at Assiniboine Park Zoo

On July 3, the Assiniboine Park Zoo opened the highly anticipated Journey to Churchill polar bear and northern species exhibit, the signature attraction in a dramatic revitalization of the zoo that includes more enriching environments for animals, enhanced facilities for visitors, and a more active contribution to environmental education, research, and conservation. “With a focus on northern animals and the impacts of climate change, this exhibit is designed to be enjoyed year-round. Visitors will be entertained, informed and inspired!” says Margaret Redmond, President and CEO of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy (APC). The Assiniboine Park Conservancy’s programming department delivers school and group programs, tours, workshops, and classes throughout Assiniboine Park and Zoo. A selection of new programs have been developed that take advantage of Journey to Churchill’s expansive outdoor exhibits and modern indoor venues to provide learning experiences for students of all ages throughout the year. “Journey to Churchill is a living classroom. We are making the animals, culture, and ecosystems of Manitoba’s north accessible to people like never before,” says Scott Gray, Director of Park Programming. Journey to Churchill is home to polar bears, seals, muskoxen, arctic fox, snowy owls, caribou, and wolves. Large habitats, dramatic changes in elevation, natural landscapes, and hidden barriers between enclosures help create more realistic and stimulating environments for animals and a more authentic visitor experience. Gateway to the Arctic, located at the midway point of the exhibit and housing Manitoba’s largest 360-degree theatre, is the primary viewing point for polar bears and seals. This multi-purpose venue is home to the Sea Ice Passage, an underwater tunnel that allows visitors to view swimming polar bears and seals from below the surface of the water. The multi-purpose Aurora Borealis Theatre shows a short film about how climate change is affecting northern people, animals and ecosystems. Upon exiting Gateway to the Arctic, visitors can explore a bowhead whale archeological dig, learn about the effects of climate change on polar bears at the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre, and observe how our zookeepers are using Positive Reinforcement Training to care for our polar bears.

manitoba School Destinations

The final section of Journey to Churchill resembles the town of Churchill and features the Tundra Grill and the Polar Playground, an indoor arctic-themed play area. “The zoo was already a great place to learn about animals and nature, and the Journey to Churchill exhibit has enhanced that in a profound way,” says Gray. New programs inspired by Journey to Churchill for grades seven through 12 focus on polar bears, the ecology of northern Manitoba, polar bear conservation and research, and sustainable development in a changing climate. There are also programs for students in younger grades that explore biodiversity and the ingenious physiological adaptations that plants and animals have made to survive in the north. While the Assiniboine Park Zoo is Manitoba’s premiere location for animal-based education, there are many other options available in Assiniboine Park. The Pavilion Gallery Museum and Leo Mol Sculpture Garden are first-class locations for art education. The Assiniboine Park Conservatory is a unique plant-based teaching facility in Manitoba. The extensive living classrooms – forests, gardens, and green space – provide dynamic year-round settings for exciting lessons. School programs are all cross-curricular, incorporating science, social studies, language arts, art, and drama, and directly relate to Manitoba Curriculum learning outcomes. “Children have a natural fascination with animals and nature that should be encouraged and nurtured,” says Gray. “At Assiniboine Park and Zoo we have a unique opportunity to deliver meaningful and memorable experiences that inspire wonder and feed their curiosity while inspiring them to take positive actions to protect wildlife and wild places.”

Manitoba Opera - Student Night at the Opera Every year, over 2,000 students attend the final dress rehearsals of Manitoba Opera’s main-stage productions through the Student Night at the Opera (SNO) program. SNO enables students to experience the power of live opera at the greatly reduced price of just $12 per ticket. These fully staged productions at the Centennial Concert Hall feature worldclass singers, along with the Manitoba Opera Chorus and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

Sung in Italian with projected English translations, Turandot features one of the most profoundly beautiful scores in all of opera, which includes “Nessun Dorma,” one of the most popular of all tenor arias.

This November, Manitoba Opera’s 42nd season will open with Beethoven’s Fidelio. A powerful ode to freedom, Fidelio tells the story of how a young woman, Leonore, disguised as a prison guard (Fidelio), rescues her husband from death in a prison where he has been wrongly imprisoned for his political beliefs. Sung in German with projected English translations, Fidelio celebrates courage in the face of tyranny and will be presented to commemorate the opening of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Closing the season in April 2015, Puccini’s Turandot, one of opera’s greatest hits, will take to the stage. Set in ancient Peking, the beautiful, but icy Princess Turandot announces that she will marry the man who can solve her three riddles but gravely punish those who cannot. Prince Calaf, captivated by her beauty, takes up the challenge, determined to soften Turandot’s vengeful heart or die trying.

Students from Chile (St James-Assiniboia International Student Program) at intermission of La Bohème Student Night at the Opera, April 2013.

The Exchange District The Exchange District is Winnipeg’s most fascinating and vibrant neighbourhood. Declared a National Historic Site in 1997, the district evokes the sense of Winnipeg when it was the “Gateway to the West,” the city of promise for all of Canada. Located in the heart of downtown, this special area includes 20 square blocks of concentrated heritage buildings, built between the 1880s and 1920s. It holds the deepest and darkest secrets of Winnipeg’s past. Fast-forward over 100 years and the Exchange District remains a unique visitor experience having changed very little architecturally since the days when Winnipeg was a new city full of optimism. Our guided walking tours are led by dynamic and knowledgeable tour guides. A must see for any visitor to Winnipeg!

Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site Enter through Lower Fort Garry’s massive gates, where colourful characters from the past welcome you as they sweep you into their world. This is where firsts happen. This is the site where the first of the numbered treaties was made between the Crown and the area’s First Nations, creating a gateway to settlement in the west. It’s also home to Western Canada’s first prison, first asylum for the mentally ill and first training facility for the storied North-West Mounted Police. Explore beautifully restored stone heritage buildings at this intact Hudson’s Bay Company fur trade centre on the banks of the Red River. Hear the blacksmith’s hammer, see and touch furs and barter a trade in the sales shop. Step inside the past at The Big House, where servant and sophisticate both share their worlds. This summer, Lower Fort Garry brings you exciting new programming opportunities to engage the whole family. While here, you can partake in a pint-sized tea party or get your hands dirty as you live like the voyageurs did. Try your hand at the games they played and then head to the sales shop where you find out what goods you can buy after a hard day’s work.

The Forks National Historic Site For 6,000 years, The Forks has been a meeting place situated at the junction of the mighty Red and Assiniboine rivers. It is where Western Canada’s story begins and where travellers, settlers and Aboriginal peoples have passed through, bringing their trade, their transportation and their tales. Today, The Forks is still Winnipeg’s meeting place, offering yearround activities and attractions for the whole family that inspire, educate and pay tribute to the history that shaped it. Children two to twelve years old, you can head to the Variety Heritage Adventure Park, scale the walls of Fort Gibraltar, ride a Red River cart, or hop aboard The Countess of Dufferin and imagine yourself traveling across the sunny prairies. Then join us for History Bites, a half-hour history adventure. Then take a 6,000-year journey with a Parks Canada costumed interpreter and uncover what lies beneath your feet. Learn the fate of the four fur trading posts and hear the epic stories behind this meeting place. And finally, it’s a high-tech history hunt! Do you have what it takes to solve a history mystery at The Forks? Using GPS technology and a self-guided booklet, solve the clues and find the hidden geocache.
