T

he Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame recognizes and honours those who have made their mark on Manitoba’s rich sport history. We honour people by telling their story through artefacts, memorabilia and text, so that one day it may inspire others to strive to be extraordinary in sport.

If you are looking for an inspiring, unique place to hold your next field trip, meeting, party, or get-together, our 3000 square foot Gallery can accommodate your needs. BENEFITS: WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU! The Hall of Fame offers age specific tours as well as provides space for event bookings. During tours, people can do scavenger hunts and answer questions by exploring our gallery. Upon entry visitors are greeted by our Hall of Fame wall, which showcases the signatures of our inducted members. They can then start off by exploring our feature exhibit which usually caters to a current event. This changes periodically so that visitors always have a new

experience and a chance to check out athletes/people/ events that have impacted sport in Manitoba. We also house a permanent gallery which is called the Decades Gallery. It starts off in the late 1800’s to present day. This houses memorabilia, artefacts and text from those time periods and truly is a remarkable experience for visitors. We also have audio displays that celebrate Manitoba sport moments and an interactive locker room where people try on equipment and uniforms in front of historical backdrops.

“Anything is possible with hard work and dedication.” This truly is a great place for school trips as it is interactive, engaging, and inspiring. It teaches kids that anything is possible with hard work and dedication. So come check out the Hall of Fame and Museum, you will not be disappointed.

We are dedicated to ensuring that our education program is not only a fun and memorable experience, but also a learning experience. We offer a variety of different programs: hands-on and interpretive; guided and self-guided tours; daycare; and a Pioneer Day Camp. Although each of these programs has a slightly different presentation, the message still conforms to our mission of continuing to engage future generations.

140 Jackson Street, Dauphin, MB | P: 204.638.6630 E: fortdphn@mymts.com | www.fortdauphinmuseum.wordpress.com

Fort Dauphin Museum Fort Dauphin Museum was established in 1975. It is located in the west end of Dauphin near the Vermillion River. Complete with a pioneer home, trading post, blacksmith shop, trapper’s cabin, church, and oneroom schoolhouse, the museum contains a vast array of artifacts and is an ideal source of information about Manitoba’s past. The Fort itself is a replica of a fur-trading post that was established on the shore of Lake of the Prairies in 1741. Fort Dauphin Museum is also the home of the Parkland Archaeological Laboratory, a facility that stores information on more than 1,000 archaeological sites in the Parkland Region. Our goal is to communicate knowledge and to provide activities that allow the community and visitors to experience the past. Call 204-638-6630 for more information.

Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum There is a hidden treasure in Winnipeg. A place that was made before Manitoba. A place that, at the time of its construction, was considered by the people of Red River to be the greatest undertaking they’d ever been witness to. It was to be the largest home ever built here, and today continues to stand as the largest oak log structure in North America.

I

ndeed, the convent built by and for the Sisters of Charity of Montréal – commonly known as the Grey Nuns – would stand the test of time to become Winnipeg’s oldest building, its oldest home. If it was considered massive in the late 1840s (it measures 100 feet by 40 feet with two full storeys, a basement and usable third floor), with the progress of time and in relation to newer constructions, it came to be lovingly referred to as “la petite maison blanche” – the little white house. Today, the Grey Nuns’ Convent stands nestled between two newer and much more imposing buildings. Set back from Taché Avenue and sheltered – hidden – by a canopy of large elm trees, the little white house is now home to Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum. From the very beginning, it’s doors were always open. In fact, the Grey Nuns were known to refuse no one. In solidarity with that tradition, Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum remains open to the public yearround and can be booked for special programming, private functions or events. Our specialty school programs, created in line with provincial curricula, bring students into a world of discovery and hands-on activities designed to deepen their understanding and appreciation for history, with a particular focus on French-Canadian and Métis contributions to the development of Manitoba. Let them try their hand at construction techniques, feel the weight of hauling water on their shoulders, figure out how to assemble a Red River Cart, or even bake traditional treats! Also explore the museum with our friendly guides, who can help you and your students discover our impressive collection of regionally and nationally significant artifacts, including the largest collection of Louis Riel’s belongings. Schools programs are available Monday to Friday throughout the school year. Evening, weekend or summertime bookings can also be arranged. Close to 20,000 people visit Winnipeg’s oldest building every year, whether by guided tour, as independent learners, for catered meetings or boutique shopping. With a national reputation as an excellent steward to a collection of over 30,000 artifacts, Le Musée de SaintBoniface Museum – housed in the little white house – is anything but small. Maybe it’s time you made your way to this hidden treasure at 494 Taché Avenue.

teachings

Folklorama Teachings encourages hands on learning in the classroom, daycare and/or workplace. Through workshops and performances, our ethno-cultural entertainers will take participants on a cultural adventure they’ll never forget. The Teachings program is designed to help appreciate and respect cultural differences and motivate participants to take pride in their own cultural heritage.

The program offers a roster of entertainers from a range of cultures including African drumming, a Chinese lion dance troupe, East Indian dance dramas, and First Nations hoop dancing just to name a few. They offer classroom workshops and school assembly performances, and they can even create a mini-Folklorama festival for the entire school. Whatever a teacher’s or school’s goal or budget may be, Folklorama Teachings can put together a program to meet their needs. The program is open to daycares and pre-schools through to grades K-12 and artists will adjust their performances as needed, depending on the age of the students. No matter which format is booked by a school, Folklorama Teachings tries to include an interactive component to their presentations. “The Folklorama Teachings program is very important to my school and my students because it allows students and staff alike to not only learn about a different culture but to experience and take part in it as well,” said Serenity Sul, a Physical Education teacher at R.W. Bobby Bend School in Stonewall, Manitoba “This program has left a lasting impression on all our of students, who are now eager to learn more and it has added to the dialogue within our school.” Learn how the magic of Folklorama can enhance your school:

Hudson’s Bay Company’s Upper Fort Garry was the site of commerce, conflict, history, heroism, culture, military might and the Red River Colony’s social centre. Here our ancestors rallied, claimed our place as a province thus leading the west into Confederation and defining our nation, Canada. The trials and triumphs of UFG are our past and a window to our future. The Friends of Upper Fort Garry re-energized this neglected, historic site using art and technology. Upper Fort Garry Provincial Park and Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Heritage Wall brings people together in a uniquely beautiful space. Equal parts imagination, illumination and entertainment, it transcends discovering facts into stories told through technology based interpretive approaches to learning. Our app facilitates discovery about the site’s buildings and intriguing icons on the ML&L Heritage Wall with its additional element, a sound and light show. Located 15 minutes south of Winnipeg on Highway 75, the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre takes students on an exploration of modern farming and food production. Interactive exhibits lead from the farmer’s field and the livestock barn to the food processor and the kitchen. Students delve into Manitoba crops and soils, and learn about the factors that influence crop production – from insects to weather and climate. A highlight of the Centre is the viewing windows into breeding, gestation, birthing and nursery rooms of the hog barn. Contemporary animal care and production practices include a virtual ultrasound to show embryos in a pregnant sow. Students learn about milking cows and follow the steps our milk takes to get to the store. Food processing, food safety and human nutrition are explored in the demonstration kitchen to complete the food production journey. Educators can select from 10 curriculum-focused programs, including the popular Great Grain Exchange, Science of Spuds, Dairy Discovery and the ecology-themed This is Our Planet program. The hands-on activities bring learning to life, and connect curricular themes in social studies, science, geography, health and nutrition to the food we eat. Located at the University of Manitoba’s Glenlea Research Station, the Centre also showcases the latest research by the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. Hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (February to mid-December) Contact Centre staff at 204-883-2524 or visit www.ffdc.ca for admission costs and more information.

The Fire Fighters Museum of Winnipeg located at 56 Maple Street, was built in 1904 and was an active fire hall until 1990. It was one of five fire halls built in 1904 and eventually this plan was used for 14 of Winnipeg’s fire stations. It is 2 1/2 story, brick building with a full basement and completed with an attached stable and 75-foot-high hose tower. The museum offers an extensive collection of vintage fire apparatus, artifacts, pictures, and information about the history of fire fighting in the city of Winnipeg and its suburbs. Dedicated to the Winnipeg fire fighters, both past and present, their families and friends, we offer you a glimpse of what fire fighting was like from 1882 to the present day. manitoba School Destinations

during their early development. Research shows that art activities develop brain capacity in early childhood. Getting creative engages children’s senses and supports the development of cognitive, social-emotional and multisensory skills. As children progress into elementary school and beyond, art continues to provide opportunities for brain development, mastery, self-esteem and creativity.

Here at Hidden Treasures we keep little hands and creative minds busy exploring the fun world of Glass Fusing, Candle Making and Soap Making. Bring your students to our studio for a fun and informative field trip or our mobile unit can come right to your classroom! Projects range from $5 to $15 per student.

These unique projects will be treasured as keepsakes for years to come. Little handprints can be captured in glass, making gorgeous gifts for Mom and Dad! With all of our soap and candle projects, only natural and organic ingredients are used. Each child feels a bit like a mad-scientist as they choose colour and fragrance to complete their projects. Each of our staff at Hidden Treasures, very much enjoy helping children develop life skills as they have fun exploring and creating with different materials.

INSPIRE YOUR STUDENTS AT THE WAG The Winnipeg Art Gallery is dedicated to offering school programs that support the Manitoba curriculum. The 2017-18 school year is an exciting time to bring students to the WAG – INSURGENCE/RESURGENCE, our largest contemporary Indigenous show to date opens in September! The exhibit features work by 28 Indigenous artists from across the country, focusing on themes of activism, resistance, and survival. Students will explore the histories and stories that have shaped these artists and also be encouraged to reflect on how their own pasts have impacted their developing identities. The work of Pitaloosie Saila, an Inuit artist from Cape Dorset, will also be on view this year. Her work brings the North to life in large, colourful prints. In addition to all the wonderful artwork there is to look at, we continue to offer a variety of artmaking workshops that connect to what’s on view in the Gallery. Choose from clay promise medals, printmaking, or creating an activist poster. Plus there are workshops for teachers, too! Check out all the great professional development opportunities this school year. Join us for one of the free teacher sneak peeks so you can see the new exhibits before you bring your class. Educators can also sign up for a selection of hands-on workshops from felt wall hangings to printmaking, as well as visual literacy activities you can incorporate into your class that will spark conversation and inquiry.

*$35 for a classroom visit

Winnipeg Humane Society The Winnipeg Humane Society is educating tomorrow’s humane leaders today with a variety of curriculum-based programs at its shelter and in the classroom.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” – Mahatma Gandhi School programs are curriculum-based and vary depending on what grade is being taught. It’s the WHS’s mission to teach students about animal welfare and ensure we each do our part in building a compassionate and engaged community for both animals and people. Treating animals with kindness directly impacts the way we treat ourselves and each other. School visits are $35. For the most enriching experience, book a WHS shelter tour and get a behind-the-scenes look at all the facets of the WHS. The WHS is more than adoptions and requires an intensive amount of work from both staff and volunteers to run its clinic, obedience classes, and community programs. Shelter tour fees are only $3.50 per student; there are no fees for supervisors, and a free lunch space is included. All programs – tours and school visits – include interaction with animals, which will be the students’ most exciting part of the day.

Book a WHS classroom visit or shelter tour by calling 204-982-2046 today. manitoba School Destinations

Hockey teams were the first step and from there they moved to working with the Brandon School Division. Driving students to Winnipeg to the zoo for well-earned year end trips or to the museums as an educational tour to reinforce what was being taught in the classroom. We will even open our doors early, providing you have at least 20 people playing laser tag.

We can accommodate groups from 10 to 250 people. LaserTopia has been host to hundreds of school groups, and once they’ve played here, they can’t wait to return.
