The Thomas Foster Memorial was built in the rolling rural hills of Uxbridge Township for $250,000 in 1936. This unique and beautiful building is of Byzantine architecture. It has solid copper tile domed roofs, solid bronze doors, exquisite fired and leaded stained glass windows, 22-karat gold mosaics in an ornate flower design and multi-coloured imported marble throughout the interior. No wood was used in the construction of this building. In the floor design beneath the great dome are the Greek letters “Alpha & Omega” which in turn flank the “Chi Rio” monogram in its early Byzantine form. Above the great dome are 12 leaded, stained glass windows allowing light to stream through highlighting a gold cross on a rich blue background. Circling the lower part of the great dome in gold lettering on a field of graded blue mosaic is the inscription: “TAKE THIS MY BODY FOR IT IS DONE AND I HAVE GAINED A NEW LIFE GLORIOUS AND ETERNAL”. Thomas Foster, Mayor of Toronto from 1925 to 1927, built this breathtaking structure in memory of his wife Elizabeth and daughter Ruby. The Thomas Foster Memorial is preserved as a legacy for generations to come and is truly the “Diamond of Durham”.

Hands-on learning at Bell Homestead National Historic Site “I resolve not to teach but to develop.” – Alexander Graham Bell The Bell Homestead National Historic Site is the first North American home of Alexander Graham Bell and his parents. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone here in 1874. The site has been a museum since 1910 and now includes the restored home of the Bells, the first telephone business office in Canada, the original farm acreage and a modern visitor centre. We offer a variety of curriculum-linked programming, for kindergarten through grade eight. Many of our programs are based around the life and work of Alexander Graham Bell. We cover topics such as: • sound • light • electricity and • magnets Our programming is very hands-on and uses real materials and real objects in a safe and accessible environment. We develop scientific and historical thinking skills while following Alexander Graham Bell’s own teaching philosophy. The Bell Homestead also offers special seasonal educational programming: • Holidays at the Homestead (offered in December): is an exploration of various winter cultural celebrations. • Habitat Homestead (offered in May and June): has the students exploring the site as they learn about the plants and animals that called the farm home, with a special focus on the importance of pollinators. • Sense and Sensibility (offered in May and June): is an immersion in the five senses with help from CNIB and the Canadian Hearing Society.

Program costs begin at only $5 per student and teachers are free!

NOT YOUR TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM Aspire Climbing’s programs are developmental to guide participants through, the fun, fitness and problem solving that comes naturally in rock climbing. It’s a journey of gaining selfawareness and self-confidence that’s inherit with the challenges and successes experienced through progression in climbing. Learning to overcome fears and how to take risks is a healthy part of life; at Aspire Climbing we provide the facility and the programs where your students have the opportunity to climb outside their comfort zone all while building selfesteem, fitness and character. We combine rock climbing with obstacle racing to challenge and inspire every participant. Students will experience increased body awareness, sharpened motor skills and coordination for healthy growth. A great practice for everyday life… ROCK CLIMBING An exercise of the mind and body, rock climbing is not simply about making it to the top; each climb presents a new challenge to negotiate the best way to achieve success. This valuable learning is important to every child’s development. Students gain the opportunity to: test their problem-solving ability and stretch their minds; and to find creative solutions, allowing them to go further and higher. Our programs guide students through this journey, build better/smarter climbers and in return, these skills translate into how they tackle challenges in life. NINJA WARRIOR Obstacle Racing or Ninja Warrior training is an alternative form of exercise that strengthens the mind / body connection. It’s like playing on one of the most fun, yet challenging playgrounds there are. This is agility training at its best. This form of play helps the body learn proper alignment and movements necessary to stabilize, balance and control dynamic movement. Students participating in Ninja Warrior are challenged to move in non-linear ways which engages a greater number of muscles. They are testing their response time and developing their hand-eye coordination. Our Ninja relay sets the stage

for students to focus on their strengths, while working as part of a team to complete the obstacle course. Participation in the relay is a powerful demonstration of how impactful being self aware can be and how beneficial collaboration really is. ROCK CLIMBING AND NINJA WARRIOR SUPPORT CHARACTER EDUCATION IN ACTION: Positive character attributes are highlighted, modeled and practiced by students involved in the Climbing and Ninja programs. Cooperation, Teamwork, Trust, Attitude, Self-Esteem: Active involvement in these programs inherently builds good character and contributes to the healthy development of attitudinal life skills. In climbing gyms everywhere, you will often see groups of people supporting the efforts of one person scaling the wall. Climbers help each other get to the top by encouraging each other and offering supportive direction from the ground level. Both Rock Climbing and Obstacle racing are individual sports where you set your goals and challenge yourself to push harder. The feeling of reaching your goal is intrinsically rewarding and builds on the idea that inside each of us is the power to achieve.

EXPERIENCE MORE

Aspire Climbing has provided my students with the confidence to not only try new physical activities, but to apply problem-solving skills and set goals along the way. The environment is fun, with many colourful obstacles to explore and tackle. The staff built excellent rapport with the kids and made them feel that they were safe at all times. I took grade 4-7 students to the facility, and each climbing class was adapted to suit the grade level and students involved. They provided me with a guideline to assess the students’ behavior and progression in the program which I found to be very useful. We all enjoyed ourselves very much, thank you Aspire Climbing! - S. Nelles Manor is a Georgian style house built in the period of 1788 to 1798 by Colonel Robert Nelles from locally quarried stone. A loyalist from the Mohawk valley, New York, he and his family were among the first to settle at the Forty (Grimsby) following the American Revolution. This home was the residence of Colonel Nelles during his long career as Justice of the Peace, Member of the Legislative Assembly and Commander of the 4th Lincoln Militia. The house was built with three foot thick sandstone walls and finished with mortar rendering. Itinerant stone masons and ship’s carpenters worked on these walls, fireplaces interior trim and structure. The deep stone walls give the windows their distinctive deep window wells. The home and family history represents the period during the War of 1812 as it was occupied several times by both British and American troops. In 1806, prior to the war, Col. Nelles owned 3,000 acres and various buildings in Grimsby. The original front of the house was facing Lake Ontario, but about 1820 a porch was added to transform the front of the house to face Main Street. This Nelles property was integral in the Battle of the Forty (Grimsby), June 8, 1813; a pivotal battle in the War of 1812.
