ring your students to Pier 21 to participate in engaging curriculum-related interactive programs tailored for primary to Grade 12 classes. Choose from more than six programs that give learners the opportunity to explore topics related to immigration, identity, history, citizenship, commemoration, and diversity. Programs are two hours in length and can be modified to one hour. View complete program descriptions at Pier21.ca/learn. Looking for an activity to commemorate Remembrance Day? We’ve partnered with the Halifax Theatre for Young People to bring Where Poppies Blow to school groups. From one of Canada’s most celebrated playwrights, Hannah Moscovitch’s Where Poppies Blow presents the triumphs and sacrifices of the First World War, seen through the eyes of an 11-yearold Canadian boy as he witnesses the effects of the war on his small Ontario town. Created for students in Grades 3-8, performances will be held on November 8 and 9, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and on November 10 at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. at Pier 21. Africville Museum Africville was a historic black community established in the 1700s on the shores of the Bedford Basin in Halifax, NS. The lands were expropriated in the 1960s, and the community’s church was bulldozed in the middle of the night. Housed in a replica of the church, the museum tackles topics such as environmental racism, oppression, and community with students of all ages. Our Educational Resource Kit allows teachers to address these topics in class as a standalone resource or as preparation for a visit to the Africville site.

ALDERNEY LANDING CULTURAL COMMUNITY CENTRE is dedicated to providing multiple venues for people in our community to experience different learning opportunities. Within our modern theatre, events plaza, market, and ferry terminal park, students, teachers, and the public witness engaging presentations related to our local history, folklore, and cultures. As an entertaining way to value different community groups’ histories and cultures, visual and artistic performances are produced for schools, specific groups and the public. Alderney Landing hosts several events and performances, such as The Colour Of Courage and the Bluenose Ghosts Festival, which provides ample opportunity to become involved and support local cultural heritage and youth development, while providing an engaging experience for members of our community as a whole.
BLUENOSE GHOSTS FESTIVAL OCTOBER 20 - 21 The Bluenose Ghosts Festival is entering into its ninth year at Alderney Landing in 2016 and continues to preserve the cultural heritage and integrity of Dr. Helen Creighton’s work on the supernatural folklore of Dartmouth. From offering students unique educational programs to community-focused fine art and interactive projects, the Bluenose Ghosts Festival claims the highest participation rate of all festivals currently produced by Alderney Landing. Full details about festival events can be found at www.bluenoseghostsfestival.com.
SPIDEY
OCTOBER 20 - 21 Spidey is an international hypnotist/mentalist/magician whose career began 10 years ago and has flourished to unprecedented heights. He was a finalist on Canada’s Got Talent and appeared on the Discovery Channel with Dan Riskin and the Daily Planet. Spidey has also been the subject of the documentary Igniting the Imagination which aired on CBC. We are thrilled to have Spidey perform six shows in October at Alderney Landing. A hypnotic show for adults, and a mentalism/magic show for children and school groups which we expect to be sell out performances.
RHYTHM OF LIFE
OCTOBER 12 AND FEBRUARY 2017 Alderney Landing, the musical group Moja Makani, and the McPhee Centre for Creative Learning are pleased to bring Rhythms of Life to the stage on October 12, 2016 and again during African Heritage Month in 2017. Rhythms of Life will do more than merely explain the many aspects of our shared history; it will present it through music, spoken word, outstanding imagery, costume, and colours. This musical documentary will allow to complete journey from the Gerrish 14 audiences nova scotia School a Destinations
Street Hall in Halifax in 1925, back to the Mississippi Delta, the Caribbean, and Africa, as performers weave culture and history. Rhythms of Life will captivate audiences and have them questioning how culture has become so divided.
THE COLOUR OF COURAGE NOVEMBER 7 - 10
The Colour of Courage, a new stage play written and directed by Anthony Sherwood, is an educational tool to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of WW1. The Colour of Courage is a stage production inspired by the diary of Rev. Captain William Andrew White II, the only black Chaplin serving in the British Military at the time. Rev. White served with the No. 2 Construction Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, which was a predominantly black battalion, whose members came from all over Canada, USA, and the Caribbean.
THE GREEN BOOK OCTOBER 6 - 7
The Green Book is a play based on a document created in 1936 by a black mail carrier. It was created to ensure black drivers did not stop at service stations, restaurants, and motels that would not serve them. The play centers on Victor Green’s trip from New York City to Halifax, Nova Scotia where his sister Esther Williams lives. What starts out as a leisure trip of five days and over 800 miles turns into a desperate need for a black man’s travel guide. Although there are many laughs along the way, the journey is not for the faint of heart. Discomforting, troubling, and dangerous territory are all part of the package.

Ski Martock Take education outdoors
Skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing are lifelong pursuits. Martock is committed to fostering a love of outdoor recreation as the foundation for a lifetime of active healthy living. Snow sports are excellent group activities that develop new skills, self-awareness, and decision making while encouraging friendship and fun. Participation in snow sports meets the Nova Scotia Department of Education physical education curriculum for daily physical activity and activity in an outdoor environment...and it’s a blast!
Alpine skiing, snowboarding curriculum connections Certified ski and snowboard instructors provide students with basic equipment knowledge and movement patterns, and move on to refining more advanced skills as they progress and improve. Inclusion is an integral part of our school programming which is why we have Canadian Association of Disabled Skiers (CADS) trained instructors available to ensure students with physical and cognitive challenges have a great day on the snow. We provide one free chaperone package for every eight students.
The right terrain and equipment Martock’s Learning Zone provides terrain designed and shaped to make learning safe, fun, and productive while the Magic Carpet conveyor lift make trips to the top of the bunny hill a breeze. We continually invest in the best rental equipment. Burton Learn to Ride snowboard equipment and Head Start learnto-ski equipment is warm, comfortable, easy to use, and designed for progression.
Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, geocaching curriculum connections Cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, students can take advantage of our passport-based geocache course. Using a trail map, GPS device or smartphone with a geocache app, students can navigate our nordic trail system and its distinctive Karst landscape which is shaped by the dissolving action on the soluble gypsum. Each geocache point contributes to understanding of the unique topography and vegetation located in the Nordic Park. Nearly five kilometres of groomed Nordic trails and tracks are set for classic, skate-skiing, and snowshoeing. We have classic ski equipment, snowshoes, and a small inventory of skate-ski equipment.
Nova Scotia School Athletics Federation skiing and snowboarding Skiing and snowboarding are NSSAF sports. Martock provides coaching and training for school snowboard teams while the Martock Ski Race Club provides coaching for ski athletes. Training lanes are available Monday and Friday afternoons and evenings. Coaching is provided by certified ski and snowboard coaches.
