MAXIMIZE CONTACT CLEAR SNOW Ride the Edge HLA’s EdgeFlex takes a ground up approach to clearing snow. The segmented cutting edge provides the necessary adaptability to maintain consistent contact over uneven surfaces, common with aging infrastructure.

Each individual section moves independently to provide quick response to the changing surface.

With maximum contact the mouldboard transfers its weight evenly across the cutting edge. The even distribution of force protects the surface from the potential damage of conventional blades when they scrape over high spots.

This remarkably simplified design is comprised of only two moving parts, an AR400 cutting edge and rubber suspension block.

Plowing with an EdgeFlex is easy; just lay the blade down and run. While you worry about blade placement and controlling the direction of the flowing snow, HLA’s EdgeFlex technology works its way across the surface, adapting to the contours for cleaner results.

Designed for easy field service, each section of cutting edge uses 2B2N maintenance. This simple 2 Bolt - 2 Nut design makes maintaining each 12” section an easy one person job. Removing the hardware, which holds the retaining plate in place, allows for easy access to the individual components for that section. Designed for harsh conditions the EdgeFlex is backed by HLA Snow’s 2 Year Commercial Warranty.

5° Tilt

1.5” Vertical Lift

Each section tilts 5° in either direction to easily adapt to uneven surfaces.

Each EdgeFlex section is able to move up 1.5”, ensuring the necessary contact when moving over uneven terrain. For warranty details, contact HLA Snow.

agencies are paying closer attention to preparing these wheeled work horses for tough winter duty, with the goal of keeping them on the job until the last storm has passed. New generation wheel loaders, like the Hyundai HL900 series models, provide cab features that keep operators comfortable, safe, and focused throughout long work shifts during and after snowstorms. All HL900 series models include as standard equipment an integrated third spool for controlling attachments, 6

which, combined with standard thumb-control proportional Roller Switch Control, enables the operator to control the blade precisely.

guides that let the operator match blackand red-colored pieces on the blade to assure proper leveling. Ease of use and ease of adjustment for the return-to-dig option are features that add to operator productivity.”

Automatic front-locking differential control option is standard on all HL900 series models. Seen here is the Hyundai HL955 plowing a retail parking lot.

Hydraulic snow blades bring high productivity to snow plowing While they’re still catching on in the U.S., hydraulic snow blades, such as those from Metal Pless Inc., have been well accepted in Canada for several decades. Like other mechanical equipment exposed to extreme weather, these expandable snow blades require care in selection, use, and maintenance. Jason Whittemore, sales manager for Metal Pless, provides some insight into teaming hydraulic snow blades with wheel loaders. “Weight of the loader and traction ability – that is, the type of tire you’re using – are key factors in matching the size of the snow blade to the loader. A 25,000-lb. loader with good

snow tires can handle a bigger blade than a 30,000-lb. loader with regular tires,” says Whittemore. “Size of the moldboard is another consideration. A 12-22 unit has a 12-foot moldboard and five-foot wings. A 10-22 unit has a 10-foot moldboard and six-foot wings. The wings provide several important functions. They contain the load of snow being plowed, they enhance safety, and they direct snow where the operator needs it to go.” Whittemore points out the combination of three-spool hydraulic controls and a quick coupler enables fast switching between a bucket and a fully controllable snow blade. “These blades are easy to learn to position. The key is in finding the correct height and dumping/tilting angle. Once it’s set, leave it there. Metal Pless blades have leveling

Maintenance of hydraulic snow blades is fairly simple. The operator should walk around the plow blade and coupler after every use to detect any hydraulic oil leakages and fix them immediately. Also, the operator should inspect for damage to wear edges on the blade, and replace the edge components before doing so becomes a necessity.

Tires play crucial role in wheel loader snow-plowing productivity Tires are another crucial factor in the productivity equation for wheel loaders used in snow-removal applications. Reliable snow grip tires, such as those made by Nokian Tyres, provide positive grip at all times no matter which direction the wheel loader is turning. “In snow removal applications, the majority of the weight, or load, is being pushed, rather than lifted,” says Brad Bisaillon, regional sales director for the Americas for Nokian Tyres. “Nokian’s Hakkapeliitta loader tires combine a unique tread design and material composition to deliver the greatest traction in the coldest of temperatures.” Regarding winter tire maintenance, Bisaillon advises, “Standard maintenance practices throughout the winter season should certainly include air pressure checks and corrections to manufacturer’s specifications, as well as a visual inspection of, not only the tire surface and sidewalls, but also the bead area; where the tire meets the rim. Sometimes the smallest rim damage can lead to perceived tire failures.”

engaging; when a role starts to feel stale, they’ll look for other opportunities. One way your organization can help to minimize turnover is by reconsidering the traditional career trajectory. Are there lateral moves you can offer millennial employees that would allow them to remain within your organization? Approach this with an open-mind and you’ll start to develop well-rounded talent who understand multiple aspects of your business.

4.Adapt and leverage their ease with technology While it may not seem human-forward to emphasize technology, we need to take a moment to understand this generation and how they relate to technology. Millennials were the first generation to be born into households with home computers and 94 per cent of Canadian millennials own smartphones. Millennials view technology as an extension of themselves and expect it to make their lives – at home, work and play – easier. As a result, they’re more likely to seek out companies with the same approach to technology. Think of it this way: They don’t want to do less; they want to do more in less time. Engage the millennials in your organization to provide input on where your organization could innovate, improve stagnant processes, and boost overall output by automating repetitive jobs. They’ll

tangible safety benefits. Not only was there less equipment and property damage reported, but workplace injuries associated with plowing were practically eliminated. Suddenly, snow contractors, and now municipalities, have a new way of evaluating their investments when it comes to selecting the right plows. Municipalities appreciate the 50 per cent salt usage reductions because of concerns for the environment, where excess salt runoff into aquifers is a serious problem. One thing about construction equipment that the general public may not know is that they are not built to absorb impacts the way cars are designed. Operators traveling at just six to eight miles per hour have been catapulted through a front windshield after striking a manhole cover with a plow. There have been some truly sickening stories that we have witnessed in the past. When conventional pushers with their solid, unforgiving construction were the norm, commercial contractors accepted the inherent risks without a second thought. This is not the case anymore, since they are now understanding the ramifications of 14

For example, when the Sectional was designed, Arctic also wanted to make their plow easier to use as well as easier to maintain. First, a universal slip hitch mount was invented to allow the easy attachment of the pusher without chains and without the operator leaving his warm cab. It also created the world’s only self-leveling plow, allowing for better traction as all four tires remained on the ground. Second, the assembly had no welds, just bolted parts, so anything could be replaced easily with a simple wrench if needed, making it easy to maintain. It also led to a much lighter platform capable of moving the same or more snow. Third, the tension on the up and down movement was accomplished with patented flexible polyurethane blocks instead of springs so as to be able to apply varying torque if desired to the cutting edges to get under ice and hard-packed snow. These “polyblocks” were also meant to take all the punishment without being permanently deformed like metal springs under extreme conditions or transferring metal-to-metal impact forces back to the operator. These low-cost blocks act like fuses which absorb all of the impact force until finally breaking, if necessary, to protect the rest of the assembly, as well as the operator. Impacts that would have caused thousands of dollars in equipment damage now only required the replacement of one or more $50-60 polyblocks, which could be replaced in the field in 10 minutes. Not only did the blocks serve several purposes including contributing to equipment and operator safety, but the three features together allowed for a considerable amount of independent movement that worked harmoniously

to add that extra level of protection to the operator during impacts. As an added benefit, as a result of a design presentation and demonstration to Arctic’s insurance carrier, Arctic was able to dramatically lower their insurance premiums for their workers’ compensation insurance in their service business. A key to Arctic’s lasting success is that it is the only major manufacturer that is also a snow contractor. Founder Randy Strait has operated since 1978 and is Chicago’s largest snow contractor. In fact, he is the largest self-performing snow contractor in the United States with over 450 pieces of equipment. He came up with the idea for his sectional pusher in the early ‘90s and has been its chief architect from the beginning. If it not for the fact that his company’s service business was his own testing lab, it would have been cost prohibitive for him to perform the amount of testing and refinement necessary to perfect his designs. Instead, operator feedback was solicited after every snow event and design modifications were implemented on a weekly basis. Today, Arctic owns a modern manufacturing facility in Bradley, Illinois that has evolved far beyond its competitors in terms of its ability to bring new products from the drawing board to the field in record time. Municipalities should be pleased to know that their investments are well protected by a snow company that not only offers them a proven, reliable, efficient and cost-effective workhorse, but looks out for the welfare of those who operate it. Pairing a skid-steer loader with the FISHER® XRS™ snowplow can help businesses be more efficient than ever before.

How to get more performance from your skid-steer

T

here has been a growing trend in recent years toward more frequent utilization of skid-steer loaders to plow snow. In particular, landscaping and maintenance companies have been purchasing plows for the front of their skid-steer loaders in order to give their summer equipment a winter application. Many skid-steer loader owners have found that snow removal can be a good source of additional income for their business in the offseason. Skid-steer loaders are predominantly used in confined areas such as parking lots and driveways due to their inherent ability to maneuver in tight areas and in between obstacles, while maintaining the ability to stack snow. This allows better performance in certain applications such as parking lots and driveways. In order to get the best performance and most efficiency out of your skidsteer loader, you need to pair it with the right piece of equipment. You need one operator, one set of controls, and one piece of equipment to get a job done in the most efficient manner. SNOW MANAGER | www.snowmanager.ca

Doing so will save both time and money. The last thing you want to have to do is use more than one piece of equipment on any given job.

When it comes to precise removal, getting right up to sidewalks and pathways, in and out of driveways, around cul-de-sacs and in crowded parking lots, you will require more maneuverability than you get with a straight blade. Plowing busy and congested locations, such as housing complexes and commercial parking lots, demand a tactical approach. The importance of a site-specific review for salt shed fabric structures

T

he advent of universally available satellite and street-level imagery has allowed more detailed and accurate reviews of building sites. The site topography can be quickly reviewed to aid in determining snow exposure, as well as identify other considerations such as wind channeling. Reputable fabric structure companies will work with their network of sales teams or dealers to obtain site photos with the orientation and location of the marked building. This allows the engineers to begin the process of evaluating the site

conditions which often involves conversation with the sales team or dealer, and customer, before the engineers can finalize its site analysis.

Site conditions While there are substantial differences between building codes in various jurisdictions, evaluation of site conditions is broadly similar. A few key effects must be determined: snow, wind, and seismic. Both snow and wind effects are impacted by surrounding terrain and structures. For example, engineers will often require heights of adjacent structures if applicable. In practice it is sometimes difficult to make a clear distinction between roofs that will be fully exposed to winds and those that will not. The designer should, in consultation with the owner, weigh the probability of the roof becoming sheltered by an adjacent taller building, adjacent taller trees, or by an addition to the building itself. Such changes could cause either snow drift loads or higher-than-average snow loads.

Reputable fabric structure companies will work with their network of sales teams or dealers to obtain site photos with the orientation and location of the marked building. Seen here is the HT series 72 x 160 Salt Front.

16

In considering drift loads, even the characteristics of the upwind obstructions are considered in many cases. For example, deciduous trees versus evergreen trees, tree species, and average tree heights all play a role into the upwind obstructions considered. Wind effects in built-up urban environments require detailed review ISSUE 2 – 2019 | SNOW MANAGER

by experienced engineers to ensure they are correctly evaluated. Seismic loading is also considered for all locations. Seismic loading can be a controlling load condition, particularly on the west coast. The seismic loading parameters are defined in the governing building code for the site.

Building enclosure The enclosure of a building should also be considered. Open-ended structures, fully-closed structures, or partiallyclosed structures all play a significant role in the demand on the structure. The customers’ application for the structure will determine which configuration is needed. For example, a bulk storage application will often utilize a one-ended structure with the open end facing away from the prevailing weather. This configuration provides unrestricted access to load and unload the bulk commodity from the building while protecting it from precipitation.

review identifies that changes are required, these are discussed with the customer before the drawings are finalized. The customer is then supplied with stamped drawings for their structure. In summary, the site evaluation ensures the appropriate parameters are used for analysis of the structure. The configuration of the building is thereby validated, or changes are made to ensure the structure has the requisite reliability for the site. â–

Building usage The use of the building must also be considered. Buildings in low-hazard applications such as bulk-storage of salt are not required to have the same reliability as buildings which are occupied by people. Careful review of the building usage is needed to ensure that the correct applicationrelated parameters are selected for the design.

Use the experts The entire process of a site-specific review can be quite involved and should only be left to the most experienced engineer professionals. A fabric structure company should use external, third-party engineers to review all structures to avoid company bias and ensure the strict objectivity of the design work. Site-specific reviews for standard configurations are completed in one to two weeks. If the SNOW MANAGER | www.snowmanager.ca

Body maintenance program to fight corrosion

H

ave you taken a close look at your equipment lately? In this part of the world, if your equipment has been in use for even just a few years, the first signs of deterioration have already begun to appear in the form of corrosion – unless of course you’ve taken preventive measures to protect your equipment and vehicles from rust. It is a fact that we live in one of the most corrosive environments on earth. In addition, the use of de-icing chemicals on our roads are at an alltime high. Without proper protection, equipment and vehicles can rust rapidly, even in warm weather. This results in expensive breakdowns, electrical failure, and compromised vehicle safety. There are many challenges in maintaining vehicles from a corrosion point of view, such as shrinking budgets for maintenance, increased requirements for vehicles to be in service, and improper or non-existent washing/cleaning of vehicles. Corrosion protection or body maintenance is much more than undercoating or rust proofing.

18

Good corrosion protection is based upon removing moisture from the surface of metal and leaving behind a film that will bond to the metal to repel moisture and prevent corrosion. Krown’s program addresses cleaning issues as an important factor in proper corrosion protection and we’ve recently introduced a product that is specifically designed to combat the calcium and magnesium chlorides that are being used in pre-wetting/ de-icing applications, it is called the Salt Eliminator. This product can be added in to either a pre-washing of the vehicle or it can be part of the service that Krown performs.

From doing to inventing By Artix Distribution

S

ome 20 years ago, when Michel Girouard was a snow blower operator, he was not satisfied with the products available at the time. He decided to create a product that would suit him best. That’s when the Bidirectional Snow Blower (with the fan at the end) was born. People who were working in the same field started noticing how efficient the product was, especially on time and saving money on fuel. They began placing orders to Girouard. Seeing how succesful his idea was, Girouard teamed up with a company that produced and distributed the snow blower, who now had the name of Avalanche. Only one model was offered, the 92-inch. It was a five-year contract with a production of at least a hundred snow blowers per year.

Following this invention and seeing how many positive comments he received, he decided in 1989 to found his own company by the name of Artix Distribution. At this time, he was producing and distributing his own product, an improved Artix Bidirectional Snow Blower with a fan in the centre. He expanded his snowblower range by producing 80inch, 86-inch, 92-inch, and 98-inch snow blowers. He also produced an inverted unidirectionnal snow blower for those who live in regions with less snow. Always thinking ahead, he just added a new inverted snowblower to its range, the Snowvac and another model unique in the market this year, the Snowfast. Receiving several requests for larger snow plows for large plots, Girouard completed his snow removal line and invented a snow plow with hydraulic
